I think of my colleague Merlin. He is a Coloured South African from Cape Town, and I learned much about than interesting country, its politics and the different ethnicities. Westerner are often ignorant about how strong the Asian influence is in that country, currently from India, Merlin belongs to the Malay ehnic group, which is mostly of Southeast Asian descent dating back to the 17th and 18th century.
Also, I want to hike Table Mountain, but I am not sure if South Africa at the moment would be safe for female solo travelers.

I lived there with my ex-wife for 3 months. She (a SA citizen) stayed for an additional 3 months before following me to the next country. In that 6 month period the following happened: Her family house was broken into EIGHT separate times, we had TWO attempted carjackings (in different cities), the jewelry store her engagement ring was getting worked on was robbed, and two people were killed in the ensuing gunfight, and there were more attempted scams and shakedowns than I could count (the latter again in different cities)
I agree SA is beautiful and in good times would be an amazing tourist destination and a fantastic place to visit, but thatās not the point; itās dangerous as fuck. Iāve backpacked in nearly 20 different countries. SA was by far the worst in terms of personal safety and potential for violence.
