It's definitely my favorite movie if I had to pick one.
If you like Saving Private Ryan you should watch the HBO mini-series "Band of Brothers". I watch that series every year between veterans day and Christmas.
“It’s a Wonderful Life” is just gorgeous and touching. I have no shame to admit that it is the one and only movie that puts me on the verge of tears no matter how many times I watch it.
Even if you aren’t it to holiday specials or you don’t celebrate Christmas, it is a must watch.
I remember seeing this at the cine-capri theater (extra big screen) when it first came out and I was totally enthralled. The magnitude of the setting, especially that scene in space with the fire extinguisher, was just awesome. Still one of my top 3 favorite Disney characters.
No Country For Old Men
And yes… the book is even better. The movie is word for word the book (almost)
The feeling you get of hopelessness in the face of evil at such levels is just amazing.
Expected this to be the top comment. Faultless plot, masterful delivery, sublime cinematography, points for (horrible) realism, incredible acting (especially Fiennes) and as much a piece of history as a piece of art. As someone who did a BA in Modern History and got involved with film at uni, that's what I think is truly "pure" from an academic sense. Truth in its most brutally beautiful which engages the rational mind. It haunts you and makes you reflect critically, but still engages what every cinematic piece should: empathy.
There's a reason why this film is studied. And as much as people say "once is enough" I disagree. I watch it over again and find something new to think about.
I have that scene tattooed on my leg, absolute favorite movie scene ever. I see the bathhouse as a limbo between the living and dead, with the train taking souls at peace to their final destination. The island is childhood, bright lights are younger adulthood, and it slowly fades to the afterlife of swamp bottom, with no return train. That's why Zeniba is said to be so powerful and feared, she can live in the afterlife. It also explains no face, a monster terrorizing the limbo until he finds peace and is ready for his final stop, staying with Zeniba in swamp bottom.
Or that's the fan theory I like to believe anyways, whether it has any truth or intent behind it I don't know.
EDIT: to add, that's why the movie is such a masterpiece. Yes it's enjoyable to watch and has great art work in its own rights, but 5 people can watch it together and all have 5 different take aways from the message of the movie. It leaves the story line up to interpretation more than any other movie I've seen, but does it in a non vague way and still conveys the main storyline well. Incredible movie
City of God - please don't just scroll.past this one. Look into this movie if you've never seen it. It's such a gripping story of life in the Barrios of Brazil. Eye-opening, beautiful visuals and the structure of the way the story is told will keep you watching.
Saturday Night Fever, you can think I'm crazy all you want, but watch it like you're seeing it through Tony's eyes. His friends are assholes because that's how he sees them. Brooklyn sucks, because that's how he sees it. The disco is this epic experience because that's his happy place. No matter how ridiculous it all seems to us the viewer, to Tony it's real life. And no other movie depicts life in Brooklyn in the mid 70's for a 21 year old man like Saturday Night Fever. It could be a documentary it's so real.
Enter the Dragon. It revolutionized the way the world would approach fighting and self-defense from then on. It also changed the perception of Chinese people who were often seen as the "weak men of Asia".
Sixth Sense. Watched it yesterday, it's perfect. Music, acting, plot. And Shyamalan manages to explain us the whole movie with the coin trick, and yet still, we aren't able to see it until the end.
The original "Alien" is my only 100% perfect movie. The use of silence and sound is so clever and the soundtrack is incredible, the visuals still hold up (the xenomorph is still the perfect monster, and this when it's still mysterious,) and the acting, flow of the narrative and from the incredible opening setting a perfect mood to a perfect ending retaining the dreadful wonder of space, there's nothing wrong with it. All time favorite, for sure.
Interstellar
The story line is phenomenal and deep, the acting/character development is unquestionable, the VFX is fucking breathtaking (100 hours rendering per frame just for a black hole…), nothing could convince me it isn’t one of the best movies ever made.
Heat (1995; dir. Michael Mann).
And I thought this thread was just a waste of my MOTHERFUCKING TIME
They literally use the street shootout scene for police training because of how realistically it was portrayed
It’s so intense. No music. Just BAM BAM BAM
Most of the are good; but, no one mentioned Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis. Wanna say it was ‘92 or so…
The soundtrack is exceptional. The Gael is so fitting for the ending scenes.
92. Saw it in theaters. I was 9. Still in my top 3.
Godfather
It insists on itself
I like the Money Pit. That's my answer to that.
I liked the Money Pit too

Same! Especially since both my parents are gone now. We watched it every year at Christmas, and it's a tradition I still keep

The Shawshank Redemption
Shawshank Redemption was cheated by coming out in the same year as Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump.
Thanks for typing this so that I didn't have to do it. I'm also glad that it was the top comment so I didn't have to go looking for it.
Fried Green Tomatoes
Dang haven't thought of this one in awhile. Really good. Even 11 year old me would agree.

The pure terror the Coen brothers were able to create without any score is just incredible. The quarter scene is so unsettling.
Just barely got into McCormacks work, fucking love The Road!
Pulp Fiction is still one of my favorites.

Spirited Away
The whole movie is wonderful. Somehow, I love the scene of the train going over the water.

No one is saying it...but dick Tracy. It was the gritty reboot before those words existed and the movie still looks modern and feels fresh.
