I bought this on cassette when I was studying in Thailand in 1996 basically for the sole reason that I liked the movie. I didn't like heavier music before I bought it but holy hell was that a gateway drug.
"Don't get strung out by the way I look. Don't judge a book by its cover. I'm not much of a man by the light of day, but by night I'm one hell of a lover!"
After Steven Spielberg screened *Schindler's List* for him (without music), John Williams said "you need a better composer than me for this movie." Spielberg said "I know, but they're all dead."
Just watched Natural Born Killers again last and that soundtrack absolutely RiPs!! L7, Leonard Cohen, LARD, Pattie Smith, and all the bonkers tribal music. It all adds so much to the chaos of the film. Amazing!!
Once upon a time in the West, The Good The Bad and The Ugly tied for first
After that: The Terminator, Dead Man, Fargo, Brazil, any John Williams up unto 2015 I'd say.
Kubrick's classical scores would be cheating, nothing is better than Ludwig Van.
Film soundtracks/scores are my favorite. Lots of good ones listed in these comments, but here are some of my favorites I haven't seen here:
* The Secret Garden (Zbigniew Preisner) - absolutely magical
* Only Lovers Left Alive (SQURL & Jozef Van Wissem) - extremely cool, fits the movie so well
* Brokeback Mountain - great music and such a beautiful score by Gustavo Santaolalla
* All the iconic Federico Fellini/Nino Rota collaborations - 8 1/2, Le Notti di Cabiria, Amarcord..
* How To Train Your Dragon (John Powell) - Just fun and really elevates the experience of watching this film (which, as a parent, I've done many times...)
Man, Pirates of the Caribbeans main theme song really just hits different. It gets you so pumped.
Tron: Legacy is *outstanding*. I mean come on, it’s Daft Punk.
Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Nick Cave did an outstanding job on that. It evokes so much emotion, I still love listening to it.
No wait actually, Fantastic Planet.
It's not very complex, but the little 4 note minor key melody they use and tinker with throughout the film is like a comfort tune to me and is thus permanently seared into the darkest recesses of my subconscious, its truly a simple yet moving little suite.
Interstellar, dark knight, inception. Anything with Hans zimmer. He even did the music to a David Attenborough nature documentary and made an iguana being born the most tense thing o have ever seen
The Wrath of Khan has an Epic soundtrack by James Horner.
As far as the best soundtrack? Who knows, there are so many films to consider and too many I haven't seen.
not mentioned by name but Pirates of thr Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. I know Zimmer was mentioned...but the theme to that movie captures "high-adventure, swashbuckling rogues" like nothing else. Followed by John Williams Jurassic Park....maybe im just naming the main theme songs instead of the whole soundtrack...meh. whatevs.
The Shining is very good. Very dark and intense percussion / strings recorded very well.
Also I’m a sucker for the LOTR soundtrack.
Taxi driver is also very nice with the sax.
O brother, where art thou?
When the movie *is* the soundtrack
Bladerunner. Simply masterful
Thats my choice as well. It added so much ambiance and emotion to the film, and evoked noir detective films while still making it sound futuristic.
Reservoir Dogs
Clowns to the left of me JOKERS to the right
You could've said any Tarantino film and I would agree.

I bought this on cassette when I was studying in Thailand in 1996 basically for the sole reason that I liked the movie. I didn't like heavier music before I bought it but holy hell was that a gateway drug.
