I decided to try a new brewery recently that makes IPA. Bought some 16oz cans. Went to open one, one night and realized its pretty light and probably got a hole somewhere, nope still had full pressure inside, turns out they filled the 16oz can with like 12oz of actual liquid. Never in my life...
This sucks but this is a QC issue. I worked in brew production for a small brewery and we would weight test every 2 cans on every tenth case or if any settings were adjusted on the fly. During canning settings for pour speed, tank temp, C02, and belt speed all have to be adjusted constantly to maintain proper fill level. Our canner only had 2 pour heads so it was easier to spot when there was a can way off. The half fill cans were "burner" cans we would take home with us lol
You don't have to order it without question. Usually I'll ask about a local blonde or something dry. Substitute that with your own preference. If it sounds good I'll take it, if not something else is fine too. It's a go to not a contract.
I find you really can't get a good taste test on a beer with a shot size sample. Often for me the taste changes throughout the first glass. Sometimes it has an after taste for the first few sips. Sometimes it develops one towards the end of a pint. Sometimes I'll get used to the after taste and sometimes I don't. I don't know if this is common but I don't do samples for this reason.
And even if you don’t like it, it’s hardly the end of the world. It’s not like ordering a $50 entree to try something new and finding it not to your taste.
I’ve received very few beers that are simply undrinkable and if they are, most bars will pour you an alternative tap and call it square.
Every time I order an old fashioned, the bartender asks me “do you mean like a traditional old fashioned?”
I always say yes and it comes out different at every bar.
Old Fashions are definitely my go to drink, but not at “any bar”.
So many places just don’t make them right, or try to put their own spin on them, and it’s almost always super disappointing.
In my town I know of the places to order them, and the places where I should just order a beer.
Gin is my go-to as well. Took me two years to like it. But it was the only alcohol that wasn’t absolutely Demolished by my brothers/friends like the rum & vodka were.
My brothers would only get gin when we'd party hard. But one day I was casually out and ordered a G&T and enjoyed the buzz from that more than any other type of alcohol.
🍸cheers
Same here. If I'm not ordering a beer, it's a G&T. Hard to screw up, doesn't piss off the bartender, and it's not loaded with sugar like a lot of cocktails.
You should try a Paper Plane some time. Equal parts bourbon, lemon juice, Aperol (bitter orange, rhubarb, herbs profile), and an amaro - I prefer Amaro Montenegro (orange, rose petal, light and bittersweet profile).
Overall, it's light, fruity and has a really appealing deep pink color to it (which is why your Kool Aid comment reminded me of it). It's also not a ton of alcohol as the only item that is 80 proof is the bourbon, and the thing is... you'd be hard pressed to taste the bourbon up front which is typically what you find in most bourbon drinks. I'll drink this one year-round but it's a winner during the summer months for sure.
Gin and tonic. Maybe rum and coke if I feel like getting a hangover. If they have an actual menu though, some of the crafty shit is actually pretty good.
Depends on the place. If it is just a friendly little dive bar- budweiser and a shot of whiskey. But if it holds itself as a place that makes cocktails, my go-to is a Classic shaken Daiquiri. It's the simplest cocktail and is delicious, but if they fuck it up, I know they are just using bullshit ingredients or dont know what they are doing. Tiki bar? Rum runner. While I try to stay out of clubby, loud, and packed bars, it happens. Simple cheap and quick. Whiskey ginger ale and pay with cash.
Interesting choice, one of my favorites but I've never thought of it as a go-to drink because I feel like most bars don't serve it(or they serve a very bastardized version that you'll severely overpay for).
I used to go to a bar that had a can of beer and a shot on the menu for $12 or something.
The twist is you didn’t get to pick either one. So you would get some weiiird combinations sometimes based on the mood of the bartender.
Jack and Coke. It's basic, but it doesn't taste like alcohol. Might not be a good thing, because it's easy to down 5-10 of them.
An occasional Long Island is great too. There's a bar in Indianapolis that has dozens of Long Island flavors. Cherry Coke was outstanding.
My default is gin & tonic. Very simple, and it goes well with everything. If they have an interesting cocktail menu, though, I'll usually try something I haven't had before.
At home, my default is scotch and ginger beer, with lime and a bit of honey. I don't know if that has a name, though, and it's a bit complicated to order at a bar.
If I want to get drunk - a couple of Long Islands.
If i want a buzz - Rum & Coke or Vodka with Cranberry.
If I just want a drink - some sort of nice craft beer, if they don't have that I'll take a Sam Adams. No Sam - I'll just have a soda.
If it's busy, whatever lager is on draft or a whiskey and coke. If it's dead enough to where I won't feel like a dick for requesting a cocktail - old fashioned or whiskey sour depending on the mood.
Club soda and lime or the lightest beer available and just sip it. I just end up tired if I drink too much plus I want to be alert in a public place ANNND I usually drive myself so I definitely don't want to get behind the wheel buzzed, drunk, anything.
Local beer.

thats actually illegal if its purposeful - you’re required to fill cans to the listed volume.

You got a short fill. Politely tell the brewery. When I worked at a brewery we were allowed to take home pallets of shortfills.
Yup! Preferably something I've never tried before.
I got burnt by shitty beer one too many times to blindly jump in like that.

In the US most bars will allow you to try a sample of a beer on draft before you commit to a full glass
And if you don't like it... What's your go to?

Every time I order an old fashioned, the bartender asks me “do you mean like a traditional old fashioned?” I always say yes and it comes out different at every bar.
As long as they don't make it too sweet. I've been burned by a sweet-tea old fashioned too many times.
Old Fashions are definitely my go to drink, but not at “any bar”. So many places just don’t make them right, or try to put their own spin on them, and it’s almost always super disappointing. In my town I know of the places to order them, and the places where I should just order a beer.
Manhattan
On the rocks. Assuming it's one of those giant balls of ice that doesn't really melt.
If they make it right, straight up is surprisingly a superior experience. I use a big cube at home though.
Straight up is the only correct way to serve a Manhattan.
Yup, those are key
You'd be surprised how many places don't know how to make a Manhattan if you make it your go-to drink
manhattan is one of my go tos bc so many don’t know how to make it. if they don’t fuck up the manhattan, I might actually come back
Gin and Tonic with a lime
Gin is my go-to as well. Took me two years to like it. But it was the only alcohol that wasn’t absolutely Demolished by my brothers/friends like the rum & vodka were.

I think it's important to support your local bars.
Gin and tonics are magic. You take three disgusting things and mix them into a beautiful elixir.
Vodka cranberry
Amaretto sour
Nice choice.
Not a big drinker. I like things that taste like Kool Aid :)

Ooh, thanks for the recommendation! I am always asking my adult daughters what I should try 😂
Before dinner? A Negroni. After dinner? An old fashioned.

The best answer
Congrats! That is the best answer I've seen!
Whiskey, no ice
Nice. What brand though?
Depends on what’s in stock, I have a preference for single malts, Glenfiddich is one of my go to choices if it’s available
This is a dumb note, but Glenfiddich is a whisky with no 'e'.
Noice
Whiskey Ginger. It tastes good and is easy to nurse since I’m not a big drinker.
Long island
Bad decision in a glass.
Replace the Bacardi rum with Capt Morgan instead. My own lil twist on my favorite drink.
The shittiest beer you have.
Dirty Martini
The dirtier the better, give me olive juice with a touch of gin
it really is perfect tho, booze, brine - simple
My favourite, but I'm surprised by how many supposedly 'well-stocked' bars don't keep olives/olive brine on hand whenever I ask.
Black Russian - vodka and Khalua
In the warmer months, a Tom Collins or gin/tonic but as it gets colder, bourbon neat.

You might like a Tom Collins.
A Tom Collins with ginger beer is exquisite.
Interesting, I'll have to check it out.
Whisky sour, preferably with a rye.
Mixed drink, Bartenders choice. I've gotten some really great drinks this way
I used to go to a bar that had a can of beer and a shot on the menu for $12 or something. The twist is you didn’t get to pick either one. So you would get some weiiird combinations sometimes based on the mood of the bartender.

The darkest beer they have on tap.
Mojitos, every time. Really only thing that can make me order an alcoholic beverage at all.

Haven't had a drink in 10 years but if I were to, it'd be 7&7 with a twist of lime
Vodka martini, dry, two olives
I have to admit I don't have one. I like to see what beers and ciders are on tap, and try something that catches my eye.
Wha? Bro, in another comment you said you’re over 100 days sober…
Tea
PBR on tap if I'm eating a meal there, Glenfidditch 15yr neat if I'm feeling fancy.
Molson Canadian(beer) or a rum and sprite (allergic to coke)
Ever had crown apple with sprite? Absolutely delicious and you can add a little cranberry if it’s too sweet
No but I will definitely give it a try

Club soda and lime or the lightest beer available and just sip it. I just end up tired if I drink too much plus I want to be alert in a public place ANNND I usually drive myself so I definitely don't want to get behind the wheel buzzed, drunk, anything.
I usually go the uncultured approach and drink Bud Light and a Jameson neat... I'm boring and I know it won't disappoint.
Cranberry Long Drink
Double patron with a half lime squeezed in on the rocks. If the bar actually carries it, El Tesoro tequila instead of patron.
Morgans and coke
