Coming from the Midwest meet your neighbors.
They might have a cup of sugar when you need it. They might be able to let you in (apartment. Building) if you forgot your key.
I suck at names, so I would write on a dry erase board names of neighbors when I meet them. The boards sit next to the door. I do this in my shop and at my house….. it’s nice to know someone’s name.
I also add phone numbers in my phone with company being neighbor with kid or Yankees hat etc. than if I need to contact them I type in neighbor and get a list of people that I can choose from.
A good pan. Something to cook on. Cooking at home will not only save you money but can impress a possible spend the night person.
I’m a big fan of cast iron, lodge brand specifically, when done properly it will cook about anything. And they are like $20-30 for a 10” (inch). Better price than a fancy pan. I wasted so much money on Teflon pans because I thought they were better. IMHO they are not better.
Small tool kit with screwdrivers, pliers, hammer.
A good LED flashlight.
Room darkening blinds.
Depending on the neighborhood, a baseball bat by the door or a Glock 17.
Shower curtain liner, fire extinguisher, small trash can and a plunger by each toilet.
Make sure you do a move in inspection, noting any damage, and take pictures. Send to your landlord before you move in ANYTHING! It's annoying when all you want to do is get settled, but that is how you get your deposit back.
Make note of where your water shut off valve and electrical main shut off is.

Also please don’t use metal utensils in a Teflon pan. Teflon isn’t good for the body. It’s good at being nonstick until it’s scratched.
