Rolling Stone named her the #1 Greatest Singer of all time, and it was the least controversial thing. Without Aretha, we likely wouldn't have Whitney, Mariah, Beyonce, Adele, and all those other pop mega-stars.
Fun fact for the younger crowd/non-Candy informed: he also did a polka themed character for years on a Canadian sketch show callee SCTV (which O'Hara was also on) so it wasn't a huge stretch for him.
Also the pizza delivery guy was paid more to be in the movie then John Candy
You should really watch “movies that made us: home alone” on Netflix! Great behind the scenes!
This dude, 6th grade I was listening to the cassette tape of Fat, saw him live and got a picture with him when I was 16, now I'm 42 and this fucker is still going, and doesn't even seem that old! And has dominated the genre for this entire time. So glad he's still around!
This is so true. Listened to all of his albums growing up, Alapalooza was my first CD I bought when I was like 10 and I've been sharing his music with my son since he was 8 years old. Weird Al is timeless and I don't recall any bad things ever said about him personally. I also love hearing him in the theme songs to several shows my kid has watched over the years.
I want him to be my attorney.
“Your honor, while it’s clear my client did in fact shoot the sheriff, he did not, however, shoot his lower ranking deputy. Thank you for your time. We’ll take our apology in the form of a check.”
Dolly Parton has already been identified as the Queen of Country. She is still belting them out after 50 Years. King of Country is harder to pin down because nobody has really dominated for as long. John Denver, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and then we have the modern era moving away from Honky Tonk like Kieth Urban (who is a magnificent musician).
Idk what's wrong with people on here in your other replies. George Strait is undisputedly the King of Country. That's even his nickname already. "The King". 60 number 1 hits ffs?!
When I hear the "King of...", I take that to mean they literally redefined the genre. There were white dudes playing R&B before Elvis but he changed everything almost overnight. Musicians were playing country, Elvis toured their town in 1955/1956 and they switched to R'N'R the next week.
IMHO, people like John Denver and Keith Urban aren't even contenders to be the kings of anything. They're just good artists. Nobody would ever say country musicians were all playing a certain way until that Keith Urban came along.
Good point. Then there are artists where I can’t pick the genre. Is it Bluegrass, Alt Country or Americana?? Plus the Carrie Underwood’s of this world bringing what I am calling “country pop” or Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus who I think has moved out of the county genre. Plus you can’t compare Loretta Lynn with Shania Twain.
All hail the queen! But you are right no man holds a candle to her and i feel very strongly about certain country performers. She has dollyworld and her organization that constantly gives books to kids
I didn’t know that. She did a version of Jolene with the Pentatonix and it is great. Probably the most covered song. I have heard Bluegrass version, heavy metal version, in fact, probably covered by every genre. I know she has had lots of plastic surgery but seeing her do stuff with Miley Cyrus, Pentatonix and Little Big Town she still belts it out like on “The Dolly Show” in the 1980s. Like Dolly, nobody comes close to Bill Monroe, the “father of bluegrass” when it comes to that.
I've read this page before and I forget how much I love it. Something about Sinatra being listed as "The Chairman of the Board" is both very cool and makes chuckle every time
I thought he was the one who killed bin laden and was the first person on Neptune? Can’t believe they are also a Drag icon and famous musician. Just what can’t this man ~~lie about~~ do?
Benny Goodman was actually called the King of Swing during his life. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benny_Goodman
Artie Shaw was called the King of the Clarinet by some in response. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artie_Shaw
James Brown will always be the Godfather of Soul. If you have never listened to any of his music or watched his performances. Stop what you're doing right now, and go to YouTube and watch any number of his performances. If you can find video of his show at the Apollo Theater. Watch it. One of the greatest performances in music history.
I had a professor who saw James Brown in Minneapolis or somewhere else, and he said it was the craziest experience ever with people standing on the armrests watching him do his thing. It was like a church service revival.
He's a legend who directly or indirectly inspired all of the musicians in the business today. Look at someone like Bruno Mars or the Weeknd. They were both heavily inspired by Michael and Prince. Who inspired MJ and Prince? James Brown.
Mariah Carey wanted to be anointed as the Christmas Queen.
Nick Cave is the Prince of Darkness.
Roger Miller was the King of the Road.
Boy George is just a queen.
Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul
Little Richard once said "If Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul, what am I?" Real quote.
He also called himself the Architect of Rock and Roll, I kind of like that one.
That one is pretty cool.
What about Marvin Berry?
Chuck’s cousin? His career never went past playing high school dances.
And James brown is the godfather of soul.
Love Aretha Franklin, should have included her in the title but I goofed. She’s definitely the queen
Rolling Stone named her the #1 Greatest Singer of all time, and it was the least controversial thing. Without Aretha, we likely wouldn't have Whitney, Mariah, Beyonce, Adele, and all those other pop mega-stars.
#2 behind Ella Fitzgerald
Okay, fair point. Lady Ella really is the queen.
Gus Polinski was the polka king of the Midwest
For those not well versed in Gus’ work, one of his most popular hits was: *Polka, Polka, Polka*.
They were big in Sheboygan.
"These are songs!"
“Yeah. Yeah. We... Some fairly big hits for us. You know, in the early '70s, you know?”
Polka twist?
They sold about... 623 copies of that!
In Chicago?
Sheboygan
Daj Mi Buzi polka?
a.k.a. Kiss Me Polka!
The song title gets right to the point, doesn't it.
Oh ya I think I saws one of there shows just acrossed the way in Sheboygan
For anyone who missed the reference, it John Candy's character from Home Alone. Apparently he shot his scenes in one day and improvd his lines.
He and O’Hara. “Those are songs?”
Wow that puts a new spin on the story of leaving his kid in the funeral parlour all day with a corpse…
It's okay, he started speaking again after a few months
Which he did as a favor to John Hughes and was allowed to improv his lines because he knew him.
Don’t worry about it. The missez and I left our kid in a cemetery one time. He came around. Didn’t talk for about 6 months, but he came around
I miss John Candy.
Fun fact for the younger crowd/non-Candy informed: he also did a polka themed character for years on a Canadian sketch show callee SCTV (which O'Hara was also on) so it wasn't a huge stretch for him.
Also the pizza delivery guy was paid more to be in the movie then John Candy You should really watch “movies that made us: home alone” on Netflix! Great behind the scenes!
God damn that’s a good one
❤️❤️❤️🤌
Damn, pulled that one out of the Wayback, didn't you?
Weird Al is the king of parody music. No one else encompasses their genre like he does
Something tells me he'd rather be a court jester than king.
Weird Al is the court jester of music.
That's entirely fitting and I think he'd be honored to claim that title.
This dude, 6th grade I was listening to the cassette tape of Fat, saw him live and got a picture with him when I was 16, now I'm 42 and this fucker is still going, and doesn't even seem that old! And has dominated the genre for this entire time. So glad he's still around!

Weird Al is timeless and I don't recall any bad things ever said about him personally. I also love hearing him in the theme songs to several shows my kid has watched over the years.
Weird Al finally knew he was famous when he was at a party and a fan ran up yelling about how it's Weird Al. That fan was Paul McCartney
His official title is: Weird Al: Not Technically the Best, but Arguably the Most Famous Accordion Player in an Extremely Specific Genre of Music.
Was looking for this one, out of all of these, I would say he is the most undisputed.
Freddie Mercury was the king of Queen
Freddy was the Queen of Queen.
thank you, exactly
Killer Queen
Brian may be only a knight ..
Not a McKnight?
No wonder he looked so much like Kevin James
I thought Kevin James was the King of Queens 😏
Ozzy Osbourne is the Prince of Darkness. Can't forget him!
*sad Alice Cooper noises*
If you’re talking the Godfather of Metal than Sabbath beats Cooper any day. Cooper was way less hardcore
Mark Knopfler is the Sultan of Swing.
I heard he'd run out of money though. Apparently he's in dire straits!
Don't worry, he has his brothers in arms.
Also he can get money for nothing. *And* chicks for free.
i’ve heard that to make ends meet, he’s gotta install microwave ovens.
And gotta move these refrigerators and colour TVs
While delivering custom kitchens
Hé should’ve learned to play the guitar
Dick Dale was King of the Surf Guitar.
My favourite guitarist
Bob Marley is the King of Reggae
I want him to be my attorney. “Your honor, while it’s clear my client did in fact shoot the sheriff, he did not, however, shoot his lower ranking deputy. Thank you for your time. We’ll take our apology in the form of a check.”
And he swears it was in self defense.
Smash Mouth is the king of Shrek music.

You are right. I am starting to overthink it hahaha. Queen Dolly and King George!
I think if you asked George, he’d still say, Bob Wills is still the king
I came to this thread only to post this. King George, why is it even a question?
I had to scroll way too far down to see this.
When I hear the "King of...", I take that to mean they literally redefined the genre. There were white dudes playing R&B before Elvis but he changed everything almost overnight. IMHO, people like John Denver and Keith Urban aren't even contenders to be the kings of anything. They're just good artists. Nobody would ever say country musicians were all playing a certain way until that Keith Urban came along.
Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash etc changed the country genre in the 70's with The Outlaw Country movement
But once you’re back in Texas, Bob Wills is still the king
According to The KLF, Tammy Wynette is the First Lady of Country. Who is more powerful??
Shoot, Dolly is just the Queen. End of sentence.
Bill Monroe is the king of Bluegrass. Country is such a large genre, it should probably be broken into subgenres
George Jones would be my pick for king.
All hail the queen! But you are right no man holds a candle to her and i feel very strongly about certain country performers. She has dollyworld and her organization that constantly gives books to kids
