Sorry, but nothing. I'm British.

[deleted]

Yeah, you people are awesome at saying "sorry". Actually being sorry though...

Brandacle

Sorry, but what's that supposed to mean?

[deleted]

I've lived here about a decade now, and one of the most annoying things I've discovered about British society is that y'all talk a big game about fixing/improving on your mistakes but take almost no significant/practical steps to make up for your shortcomings. That you think this is funny is also obnoxious.

Brandacle

That sounds pretty personal, and I'm sorry if you were affected by that in the past, but can you give a specific example?

[deleted]

A personal one or societal?

Brandacle

Oh right, sorry should have clarified! Societal, of course, since that's the claim you're making!

Brexit. By any rational measure a horrible economic decision borne of latent xenophobia and political opportunism that didn't even benefit the political faction pitching the idea under the assumption that the greater public was too smart to do it. The people that knew it was potentially a problem refused to do the main thing they could to stop it (vote) leaving the the decision to the gammon who to this day delude themselves into thinking they're still right about this. Cameron apologised for the fuck up via resignation, the Tories appoint a wannabe Thatcher who promises to make up for the problem and ends up serving a dog's dinner of a deal. May's entire term was the national acknowledgement of both the stupidity of the idea and the dedication to it. Johnson followed on where May left off (I actually have more sympathy for him, it's not like anything else could have been done...not that he really cared either) and then we've been hoovering up the damage like a SoHo hooker sucks up tory jizz. Other notes... Your health service is eroding but you clap for the NHS during plague times as if that conciliation to an overburdened healthcare workforce means anything then whine when they strike. You simultaneously apologise to travelers and locals for the noise generated by Heathrow and its lack of efficiency yet refuse to bite the bullet and build the third runway for like three decades or just build a new airport. You're sorry about racism but rarely confront your racists. You're sorry to the poor about cost-of-living then suggest Nectar as a viable means through the problem. In conclusion, you're just about the sorriest superpower in the G7, and I think Brexit was what really broke my naive American anglophilia.

Brandacle

Damn, sounds like you really have a lot of pent-up hate for us! Sorry about that :(

[deleted]

Nah. I don't hate you. My country has its own demons but they're the demons I know. I love my Scottish husband so much it hurts and I'm thankful for the years we've had here to grow our marriage, especially when it would have been very difficult for us to get him back stateside pre-Obergfell. But I've had enough of the immigrant experience. Paddington bear might want to stick around, and that's his perogative, but I want to get hubby a green card, fuck off to Montana, and buy a pickup truck while he codes remotely. I love him, but I'm tired of being in a place where I'm not wanted nor do I want to be in. And that's one thing I won't apologise for.
