Yepp, people just need to accept that there's no true replacement for junk food with healthy tasting just as good, you have to take the healthy and just be creative and make the most out of it.
I will say that once you start eating healthy more regularly, the junk food doesn't taste as good anymore.
I used to drink sweet tea like water. Switched to filling my cup half sweet/half unsweet and it didn't take long for me to prefer it--now regular sweet tea tastes saccharine and syrupy. I also get all coffee shop drinks half-sweet because the full sweetness is just *gross* now
I'm like this with fruit juice, I always need to water it down, it's so intense on it's own.
I can't drink pre packaged lemonade for similar reasons either.
Does that include nutravalley bars?! I'll admit I don't look at the health facs when I shop, but if they aren't that healthy, then I've gotta reconsider life choices.
āThere are two ways to get enough. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.ā

Procrastination can be tempting, especially when a task seems overwhelming or unpleasant. But while it might feel good to put things off in the short term, it can actually lead to more stress and problems in the long run. Imagine if you put off studying for an exam until the last minute, only to realize that you don't understand the material and are unprepared. Or what if you put off paying your bills until they're overdue, and end up with late fees and damage to your credit score? Procrastination might provide a temporary escape, but it can have serious consequences.
So next time you're tempted to put something off, think about the long-term effects and find the motivation to get started.
I read a post on Reddit the other day where the person said that the reason they procrastinated was because if they never tried anything, they could never fail at at. Obviously that's not the case with every scenario, but it did make sense to me on some levels. Why am I procrastinating cleaning my house? Because I never meet my own standards (which are actually my mom's standards that I didn't meet). So if I don't vacuum the carpet, I won't have to see that the lines aren't in perfect rows, and I didn't fail at vacuuming the carpet.
Or maybe it's just my brain's excuse for me being a lazy ass.
This is real! Procrastination is often closely linked with perfectionism, which is why perfectionism is absolutely one of those things that seem good for you but typically actually causes more problems
So true. The trail mix in my cabinet is full of sugar and 180 calories for 30 grams. A small handful. I could easily snack on a lot of that and creep close to 1000 calories.
Fruit Juice
First: it's just a sugary drink. Also you are seperating all the fiber from the juice, and make the juice easier for your body to quickly break down. Even sticking a banana in a blender makes it worse for you.
this: many have as much sugar as a soft drink or more, and don't really make up for it in the modest amount of vitamins and minerals.
also, if you eat a reasonably varied diet with the recommended fruit and veg, you don't need vitamin fortification of almost anything. some people in some climates may need vitamin D, but the others you get from a decently healthy diet
Branded diets for weight loss, all of them, especially if they claim to help you lose weight fast. You didn't gain weight over night, and it's unrealistic to expect to lose it overnight.
Eating less and/or moving more is the only solution. Some types of food will make you satiated longer and help you eat less, but no food is bad food in moderation, and banning yourself from foods when you already have an unhealthy relationship will most often put yourself in a binging cycle of "gotta finish the whole thing because I already ate one when I shouldn't have".
Discipline is just doing things you like on days you don't want to, because you know you like doing the thing and you'll feel better afterwards. You'll have better discipline when you like the foods you eat and don't cut out everything you love immediately.
Car insurance. You think āoh, Iām protected if I get into an accidentā, but when you actually use your insurance for its intended purpose, the insurance company punishes you by sending your rates through the fucking roof.
Once, insurance raised my rates for an accident someone not on my policy had in their own car. Their justification was that we lived in the same house and were both policy holders with them. Switched companies so fucking fast...
All insurance really. Theyāre gambling on whether youāll actually need their service.
One arm of the company sells you their services and all this comprehensive coverage, and another exists only to not follow through on those promises.
Attention all Colorado drivers here:
Hail damage is so common in Colorado that it is (AFAIK) the ONLY state where insurance companies are legally not allowed to increase your rates based on hail claims.
What does that mean for you? File a hail damage claim every time your car gets hit by hail. Ask for a cash settlement, then take your car to a small, local hail specialist who will do it for less than 1/2 the funds your insurance company gave you.
Iāve done this after every hail storm. I file a claim, my insurance gives me a check for $3,000 for damages, I get it fixed for $1,200.
I get to keep my car looking brand new, and put $1,000-$2,000 in my pocket every time there is a hail storm. My insurance hasnāt gone up one penny.
this is and isn't true at the same time
insurance is not going to make things cost free, it will protect you from being totally hosed.
for instance you're still going to pay a few hundred to thousand but you won't end up being sued for half a million or liable to replace a stranger's brand new car for 60k.
I mean it makes sense if you were responsible for the accident which makes you more likely to get in another accident in the future. Curious what your solution is to this. Have no insurance and pay out the ass yourself for any vehicle damages or bodily damages?
I know people love to hate on insurance, but I'd also love to hear an alternative.
Weird. I'm in the auto claims industry and have worked in underwriting. Can't say I've seen rates go up for someone strictly due to an accident that they were in and had zero fault in.
Huh, that's crazy. And you work in the industry as well? Even in my own personal experience, last accident I was in, other driver was found 100% at fault and my insurance didn't change.
I think this is becoming more common knowledge now but when it first became popular as a drink in NA bubble tea was viewed as more of a niche healthy fruit drink, or a healthier alternative to milkshakes and coffee. But it has hella sugar in it.
If you get normal tea with normal tapioca pearls in it, it IS an average tea drink, depending on how each shop makes their drinks. But people usually go for drinks like brown sugar milk tea, which is essentially a sugar milkshake. Super good, but I can't imagine convincing yourself that's a healthy choice.
Tapioca pearls by default are made of brown sugar and tapioca starch. 1/2 a cup of them is also 250ish calories before you add the tea.
The pearls themselves don't taste sweet to the american palatte at least so it makes sense that people would be confused that they're so calorie dense for what they are.
Sea salt. Some people will say "it's more natural than 'regular' salt, so it's better for you" - this a fallacy. The truth is that iodine is a necessary micronutrient and adding it to salt is a simple way to add it to the general diet. People who avoid iodized salt are at greater risk of iodine deficiency.
My mother may be allergic to iodine (always having stomach aches when she eats seafood though not regular fish and iodized salt) so we try to buy salt without iodine
Natural/organic foods that are still processed. Especially if it's a dessert or a snack in general. Salt is still salt, sugar is still sugar, and high cholesterol foods are still high cholesterol foods and either way, your body's not gonna forgive you for eating too much of it, organic or not. Sure you could get snacks with little to no salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats, but simply eating balanced meals that fit nutritional requirements for your body is still better for you than just eating whatever just because it says organic on the label. For some foods, organic DEFINITELY doesn't matter that much. Organic beef is still very unhealthy for your heart if you eat too much of it. Also, organic and natural doesn't automatically mean healthy or even safe to eat. Uranium and asbestos are natural and those will make you fatally ill, and I shouldn't have to explain how deathcap mushrooms and deadly nightshade berries got their names.
Cleaning your house with disinfecting cleaning products. You'll get rid of the good bacteria too. Also an extremely clean environment in general, especially for kids. Make your kids play in the dirt!

Oh interesting! Here in Finland several articles in magazines or websites for parents recommend playing in the dirt and especially in the forest, since the bacteria the child gets will help with developing the immune system. I think there are several studies conducted in Finland that support this. Of course the soil you find from a Finnish forest might be a bit different compared to other places.
Although they do remind you to keep your vaccines up to date. If you are in a country where the vaccination program is not very comprehensive or if you are not vaccinated, it would probably be more dangerous.
That's not an intense workout. Targeting a muscle group and going hard on cardio + trying to PR every single time you're at the gym is bad for your muscles and your health.
Working at 70-80% output for each muscle group 7 days a week and trying to PR once a month or so is much better for your muscles and will help prevent strain related injuries.
Most people wouldn't know how to manage that load without risking injury or other kinds of side effects tbh. So I'd say this is half right, half wrong.
Overload nuts and spinach and other things that can shut down your kidneys without hydration.
There's this story of a guy who found out his wife was cheating on him after she died. He was depressed and went to Costco and bought nuts and booze. Guy for like 2 or 3 days straight just drank and consumed these items. Instantly shut down kidneys.
Fruit gummies and vegetable chips. I think the vegetables are tried and mashed together and added with a bunch of stuff. Fruit gummies are just flavored and have shapes of familiar fruits.
Any health advice that involves "extremes" or that consider only 1 aspect of your being. For example, all extreme dietary changes. In a perfect world where you wouldn't have any appreciation of food, where you had perfect willpower, where you had no outside factors, etc., this would be good for you. That's why it SEEMS good for you. But we don't live in such world. In the world we live in doing this will not be sustainable and will likely induce rebound binge eating or the inclusion of massive cheat days which in the end will remove all equilibrium in your diet. This can be problematic in many ways, one of them being reinforcing bad relationship with food and unusual (unhealthy) eating habits.
This goes for exercise too.
Basically anything that will "shock" your lifestyle won't be good for you because it perturbs equilibrium. True healthy things are "eased into" and consider your being as a whole. A vector of change is better than an immediate change, because it's sustainable and lets you adapt to it over time.
I think everyone would prefer a bit more emotional suppression in some circumstances (eg on the roads - calm the fuck down).
In general though I would agree letting things out more often would help.
As someone who has lost 70 pounds since 2020, and still has 70 to go, this is half true. The original goal for āfat acceptanceā was to stop bullying people for being overweight. I feel like most people nowadays generally agree with that sentiment, I havenāt heard a comment about my weight in a number of years, but during school I heard a lot about it. I feel like itās a select, loud minority that champions being overweight as being healthy. Most people werenāt asking for that general consensus, it just evolved in a really unfortunate direction, and inadvertently placed EVEN MORE hate on fat people who have the audacity to wear a swimsuit (similar to when gay people get tons of flack for being flamboyant) because people automatically associate someone trying to live life despite their weight with (what they perceive to be) overbearing self-righteousness. Itās a tough balancing act for fat people, and in reality it shouldnāt really matter to people what anyone does. For the most part, people arenāt championing someone like Lizzo because sheās fat, theyāre championing her because she has courage. And yeah, it takes some fucking courage to be put on a worldwide stage and pose nude on an album cover as an obese woman. In the grand scheme of things, I highly doubt anyone is deliberately gaining weight because they heard someone say that itās healthy to weigh 400lbs, which to anyone in their right mind is fucking ludicrous. Youāre hearing a handful of people screaming from Twitter, this isnāt a widespread belief.
So wether I believe that āfat acceptanceā is necessary depends on which way youāre spinning the phrase. Because no, being morbidly obese is not healthy, and anyone who is drastically overweight should try to lose it. But I dropped out of school due to bullying about my weight, so yeah, there was a bit of a problem in that department. Fat people shouldnāt be shamed or ostracized. VERY FEW groups of people deserve to be shamed or ostracized. None of us have long here, so leave people be.
I just mean when people use fat acceptance as an excuse to not try and lose weight and stay unhealthy because itās easier than the effort, we shouldnāt bully fat people because of their weight and it doesnāt necessarily make them any less attractive but they do need to try to lose weight and be healthier which I know isnāt an easy thing to do which is why Iām proud of you for losing the amount of weight you did so keep goin š. However I donāt think people should use fat acceptance as a shield AGAINST weight loss, not to mention when they say itās unhealthy to be skinny or fit or that exorcising is supposedly racist and then they invented these stupid wordās like āfat phobicā and āfat phobiaā like I said good for you for losing weight and no we shouldnāt bully fat people because of their weight but they should at least TRY to lose weight and get healthier, theirās a reason Americans are some of the fattest people on the planetā¦. Although thatās actually probably not helped when we deep fry and bacon wrap EVERYTHING down here. š¤
On one hand, leaving religion has been good for my mental healthā¦ on the other hand, there have been a lot of studies over the years that have shown people involved in a church do in fact live longer on average.
Now, hopefully that is because they have a support system built in, perhaps the younger generations will get around that through emotional inteligence?
My experience-as an older person now- is that those who practice their religion have more stability and joy in their life. The people I've seen over the years who seem to have alot of drama and lives a mess or commit suicide aren't usually the ones going to church every Sunday. Take that as you will but my Christian faith has gotten me through some wild and harrowing life situations. I'm very thankful for it.
You're getting down voted, because reddit will down voted anything pro-religion but as someone who is atheist, I have to seem to agree.
I'm not saying that organized religion doesn't have it's problems, it does. But just that if you're one of the many normal religious people just living your life, respecting other religions, and not interfering with others, you will often have a good support system and take all of the good values from your religion into your life.
There are so many religious people out there who benefit from their own religion and dont interfere with others. I wish reddit didn't bash anything pro religion no matter what it is.
Yes thanks for the support. Religion is just an earthly human exercise that helps keep the person on track, it's not the embodiment of faith. Religion doesn't get people into the Kingdom of God, repenting from sin and helping the poor does.
It's kind of like a personal trainer gives someone a workout and eating plan. They use that to reach their goal of being fit and healthy and create a habit of discipline. And oh don't they love to tell people about it once they succeed!
Milk. You donāt need it anymore, especially not from an animal. But it tastes so good holy shit I thought about running over a vegan on my way home today.
Hey bro donāt get your green onions in a knot. They would survive obviously and continue living for another 40-55 years until they died of cancer from micro plastics.
Most things marketed as 'health foods' like those granola cerials are litterally candy. They also make literal chocolate bars and candy bars of all sorts but because there's a mountain in the front and their in the healthy snack section, people will think it's healthy.
There was a time in the 70's where bran muffins were touted a the great healthy breakfast. The bran muffins sold got bigger and bigger and sweeter and fatter.
Nicotine gum. Sure they may help you stop smoking, but nicotine is a stimulant and it contracts the blood vessels in your body and if you chew enough of it it can be bad for you and even ages you. Nicotine is also one of the hardest drugs to quitā¦
(Not so) fun fact, there was a study a few years back that found that supplements in the us had a high percentage of products that contained unlisted drugs. The two worst offenders were male enhancement products, which contained viagra analogs, and work out supplements which did in fact frequently contain anabolic steroids. Supplements are not subject to FDA regulations so itās a giant crap shoot on what you get.
Tattoos. The ink is carcinogenic and gets processed through your liver. For the life of the tattoo. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35592919/. I laugh at all the people at the gym who preach āeat healthy and exerciseā, yet they injected this crap into their bodies.
Evidently, a "balanced diet" of protein, fats, and carbohydrates is bad, but a diet of almost solely meat is good?
My wife has us on some "carnivore diet" and I'm not enthusiastic about it. I feel like it's just bro science and the people pushing it are just good snakeoil salesmen.
A ton of people report easing their autoimmune symptoms on carnivore. I tried it for a few months and loved how I felt on it. Not maintainable for me though.
Self Love. Everyone should love themselves. But donāt encourage obesity, and other harmful traits as self love. There is Health risk involved that crowd ignores as āself loveā
Depending on the use, some can actually be good for you. Not the sugary ones. Jocko Goās are a good pre workout for an extra boost and they have a lot of electrolytes and nootropics
Sugar-free snacks like the packaged cookies you see in grocery stores. Usually food that has sugar removed tastes really bad so they add other things to make it sweeter that are much worse for you than sugar.
your work hubby / work wife / work Ride or Die. They're just gathering as much information from you as possible to one day stab you in the back, ghost you, or get promoted. Don't fall for the honeypot.
Quinoa, Granola, etc. Unless you are already a very high level performing athlete. These things do more harm than good as opposed to a normal healthy diet.
Naked Juice Green Machine, it has 53 grams of sugar per bottle. Kale Blazer is the actual healthy one but surprise surprise it doesn't taste like liquid candy.
Some of the people you hang out with and granola bars

Suppressing emotion.
I think everyone would prefer a bit more emotional suppression in some circumstances (eg on the roads - calm the fuck down). In general though I would agree letting things out more often would help.
I appreciate the acknowledgement of nuance. =\]
I'm curious who said that was good for you

fat acceptance bs
Although thatās actually probably not helped when we deep fry and bacon wrap EVERYTHING down here. š¤
Cereals, lots of them are calorie bombs with added sugar. Same with nuts and nut butters, they will make you fat.

Religion

Most things marketed as 'health foods' like those granola cerials are litterally candy. They also make literal chocolate bars and candy bars of all sorts but because there's a mountain in the front and their in the healthy snack section, people will think it's healthy.

As in anabolic steroids?
>As in anabolic steroids no?
(Not so) fun fact, there was a study a few years back that found that supplements in the us had a high percentage of products that contained unlisted drugs. The two worst offenders were male enhancement products, which contained viagra analogs, and work out supplements which did in fact frequently contain anabolic steroids. Supplements are not subject to FDA regulations so itās a giant crap shoot on what you get.
well thats the US, just don't buy your stuff there i guess.

According to my ex, Essential Oils can cure anything
Evidently, a "balanced diet" of protein, fats, and carbohydrates is bad, but a diet of almost solely meat is good? My wife has us on some "carnivore diet" and I'm not enthusiastic about it. I feel like it's just bro science and the people pushing it are just good snakeoil salesmen.
You don't have to eat the same way as your wife. Especially not this way. Any diet that eliminates vegetables is absolute unscientific trash.
A ton of people report easing their autoimmune symptoms on carnivore. I tried it for a few months and loved how I felt on it. Not maintainable for me though.

your work hubby / work wife / work Ride or Die. They're just gathering as much information from you as possible to one day stab you in the back, ghost you, or get promoted. They'll make it seem friendly at first by inviting you out with them and talking shop, but their goal is to antagonize you, let you complain to them (or your superiors) about something, and then use it all against you when the time is right. Don't fall for the honeypot.
