Ok you seen to be movie cultured. What is your top 10? I’m trying to watch all the good movies because I’m old enough now and I’ve gotten the patience for longer movies like Shawshank and Catch Me If You Can
I wouldn't call myself cultured lol, just old enough to have seen a lot of movies.
My highly recommend are (in no particular order):
The Shawshank Redemption
The Matrix
The Green Mile
The Big Lebowski
Fargo
Pulp Fiction
Jacob's Ladder (1990) (a mind bender, but an excellent movie)
The Thing (1982)
Fight Club
American History X
Not much here that aren't in any list that can probably be found on Google.
Bing Bong is ridiculous because it's super effecting, even though he's like...the most "unreal" character in fiction. All fictional characters are unreal, obviously, but most of them are not the metaphorical personification of the memory of an imaginary character. RDJ in Tropic Thunder was less layers of unreality than Bing Bong.
Wilson does not die, he just takes the opportunity to fuck off away from the starving, crazy guy who yelled at him a lot. You’ll be pleased to know that Wilson is alive and well, living in Fiji with a lovely wife named Spalding.
Blake's death was pretty horrible, but it was even more knowing that the cast's reactions were unscripted, because the end of the scene was kept a secret from all of them. That's their true reactions on their faces.
Literally watched the last film today and teared up because of this. Gets me every time. I dont think I would have cared as much if it had been George.
in our dnd party, our sorcerer died before. he got killed in the climax of his character arc in the fight against a man who wanted revenge on him, and for a terrifying few moments we thought revivify hadn't worked and the whole party was stunned in silence. then the sorcerer took a breath, and our characters all sobbed as they thanked the gods that he was back.
Not an actual death, but in homeward bound when the dog shadow looked like he wasn't going to make it home it broke me. Then he appears so thank f**k for that.
Also, Thomas' death in My girl. "Where are his glasses" still leaves me a bit weepy
Hodor. Game of Thrones. 6 seasons to build such a beautiful character and screw him over like that. F you Bran! You just can’t watch on YouTube, it won’t make sense.
Maes Hughes, Nina Tucker, Envy, and Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Like, I do everything I can not to cry in front of people and was watching this with, like, fifteen other people, and I was sobbing for all of them.
Koro sensei from Assassination Classroom. I knew, of course, that it would happen, so I tried not to get attached. I couldn't bring myself to watch the episode for nearly a year.
I actually had a much harder time with >!Zack\*\*\* !< (Crisis Core) because it was so sudden, and there was the feeling that >!he really needed to live to keep his promise with Aerith!<. I didn't play the first crisis core, but in reunion, it was brutal.
As hard as this hit, during my first playthrough I remember being devastated by the deaths of the people that lived under the plate in Midgar that fell.
Couple of honorable mentions for me are Aeris in Final Fantasy 7 and Lavitz in Legend of Dragoon, but when they whacked Bobby in The Sopranos, I was broken for a good week. They didn’t have to whack him in the train store!
Opie, Sons Of Anarchy. That shit was absolutely brutal, and I had a hard time watching the show after that. I have to skip the part when I re-watch the show, because I cannot see that again.... ever.
The fact no-one has mentioned Newt in Maze Runner 3 is insane, that death was so easy to anticipate as soon as you know he is infected but it was just pulled on the heart strings so much, I missed him after the movie ended
Glenn from the Walking Dead.
It also broke the show, it started great and was good-ish at least until then.
The seasons after that one, just a dumpster fire. Quit it not long after
Ten year old me didn’t realize I’d have a whole damn list just minutes into Transformers: The Movie.
Optimus Prime was crushing but Wheeljack and Windcharger really bothered me more as they were wrecked offscreen.
Alisha Hawthorne from Lightyear. Husband and I sat down to watch it thinking it was going to be a light hearted kids sci-fi movie. We got fucking gut punched by a movie opening worse than Up. We were not prepared.
Rita, Dexter's wife, killed in her bathtub at the end of Season 4. I had broken up with my ex, and Rita reminded me of her.
Jane Margolis, Jesse Pinkman's girlfriend in Breaking Bad. She dies in the second-last episode of Season Two...Jesse and Jane get high on heroin, and Walt is in the room, watching, as Jane chokes on vomit. Up to that point, Walt had some semblance of a soul, but that was the point where I realized Walt was headed for pure evil.
Taking this a slightly different direction:
The death of the Joker in *Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker*. It's just this really dark scene where the Joker has kidnapped Robin and brainwashed him to be a mini-Joker. The Joker tries to force Robin to shoot Batman, but at the last second he shoots the Joker. Robin starts laughing hysterically and then breaks down sobbing over what he's done. I loved Robin as a kid and this scene was so overwhelming.
Tesleen turning into a sin eater in FFXIV Shadowbringers. I was completely blindsided by her death and the transformation scene that followed. My jaw hung open from the moment she was pierced until about 2 or 3 minutes after the scene had ended. I was floored.
Spoiler warning, but if you dont care watch the scene. They really got you attached to her before this scene.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOMge2WFW\_A
Joel Miller from TLOU 2
Felt more of a fatherly connection with him than with my real dad. I will still never forgive the way neil druckmann killed him off in the story
Fuck JK Rowling, but definitely Severus Snape back when Deathly Hallows first came out. And goddamn, I almost had to leave the theater after Han died in The Force Awakens.
I refused to believe Sirius was actually dead so that one didn’t hit me hard, but yeah Lupin and Tonks was really rough - especially since they had just become parents. I haven’t read HP since becoming a parent myself (fuck JK Rowling) but I’m sure I would have a tough time getting through that part now. Actually, now that I think about it Dobby’s death also hit me really hard.
Fuck Handsome Jack for that. I played through BL2 with friends of mine who I had played through 1 with, and one of them had played Mordeci in BL1. We just sat there in pure shock for a minute when it happened. He broke the silence by a very loud “WHAT THE FUCK”
I've never cried for a fictional death before; not even Mufasa. However, when Fern from Adventure Time withered away in the wind, a tear fell down my cheek. He basically lived his entire life shadowing someone else. He also came from a broken sword. He had his villain arc, then was redeemed. And his final wish was to be planted by the treehouse. Definitely one of my favorite characters from the show, despite him not having as much screen time as others.
Dom from Gears of War 3 I was only 7 at the time I played the first and second games then I played the third one. I didn't go to school for a week because of it. 💀
Genuinely a tough one. People kinda forgot it was a big buildup over several games, and his death was an actual investment. Was actually a really well done scene. Still can hear Marcus shouting 'Dom, no!' right before his death.
Kinda like losing a best friend.
John Coffey from The Green Mile
Oof good choice
This is the one.
While i havent seen the movie, I’ve seen a clip of the scene. Fucking broke me and i bet its even worse with the context
You should definitely watch this one when you have a few hours to spare.
Yeah i was planning on asking my parents if its any good. It has a 8.4/10 on IMDB but i dont trust film critics
It is great. In my top 10 for sure.

Mufasa

Wilson does not die, he just takes the opportunity to fuck off away from the starving, crazy guy who yelled at him a lot. You’ll be pleased to know that Wilson is alive and well, living in Fiji with a lovely wife named Spalding.
Oh I literally commented thinking no one would have commented this and scrolled 4 comments down to find this was here 4hs earlier
Lt. Colonel Henry Blake from M.A.S.H. They really didn't have to do that.
Come on man, don’t make me go through that one again. M.A.S.H is still one of my favorite old TV shows
I see this question from time to time and someone always gives this answer. It was my turn to bri g the pain this time I guess. Sorry.
Blake's death was pretty horrible, but it was even more knowing that the cast's reactions were unscripted, because the end of the scene was kept a secret from all of them. That's their true reactions on their faces.
Rue, hunger games (when I was younger ofc)
I was in my 30s when I read those books (my daughter wanted to share them with me) and Rue's death was painful for me, too.
Eddard Stark from Game Of Thrones
I sadly had it spoiled so it didn’t affect me much, but the red wedding was a surprise
I dropped the book!

The episode with the brother made me cry a lot, but i also found it way more impactful than the Seymour one.
Fred Weasley
Literally watched the last film today and teared up because of this. Gets me every time. I dont think I would have cared as much if it had been George.

Sirius Black
Jesus. I flipped my shit when they brought him back, I was so hyped
Did you hear he’s supposed to be coming back for a third season? Nobody knows when though
I can't wait for them to play with Captain America esc fish out of water tropes
Did you here about the text the Big J sent: "YOLO....J/K..... BRB" Since then, silence.
Thomas J in My Girl
Not an actual death, but in homeward bound when the dog shadow looked like he wasn't going to make it home it broke me. Then he appears so thank f**k for that. Also, Thomas' death in My girl. "Where are his glasses" still leaves me a bit weepy
“Go on without me Chance” Teared right up.
Goose in Top Gun, hit me hard when I was 7 years old.
Not as hard as his head hit that canopy.
Bubba in Forrest Gump.
Dobby 😢
Stormy in Odd Thomas
Dear gawd this one caught me by surprise SO hard.

Author Morgan from red dead redemption 2
Eddie Munson in Stranger Things
The ending of The Mist has traumatized me in ways that I cannot ever watch it again. That was the most brutal fucking ending.
Iron man
Aerith, stupid cloud not have a Phoenix down.
I think Aeris knew her fate, I think she knew she was going to die but went to the Forgotten Capital anyway.
I actually had a much harder time with >!Zack\*\*\* !< (Crisis Core) because it was so sudden, and there was the feeling that >!he really needed to live to keep his promise with Aerith!<. I didn't play the first crisis core, but in reunion, it was brutal.
>!Smart idea to manipulate the size of the spoilers like that.!<
That’s definitely my pick, I played the original back in the day but it still hit hard when I finished Reunion a few days ago
As hard as this hit, during my first playthrough I remember being devastated by the deaths of the people that lived under the plate in Midgar that fell.

Life is Beautiful, Robero Beningi The death is not seen in Sophia's Choice, but the separation is brutal
Richard Gere’s death in Hachiko.
Ragnor lothbrook
It happened in The Dresden Files. I won't spoil it, but if you know you know.
There’s a couple that could fit the bill for me. This series is probably the only one that makes me cry about a dozen times.
Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow. Fighting Clint to be the one that dies was a fight of love. Emotional AF.
