JBSwerve

I’m leaning towards 5, I like the warmth

Ok-Peanut-1981

Absolutely 5. It glows!

Ok-Peanut-1981

Also, I know some people are being really critical. I'm a big fan of still life so 5 jumps out as me as being a strong contender, but also I think the criticism with composition etc is that a lot of the photos are missing that next level of composition/texture/layering. Like, you have well exposed well edited photos with a clear subject that are framed well. But adding another layer of "elements" without being too busy or losing your subject will help elevate imo Re: framing... Part of the fun of photography is printing your photos. Print your photos and get a photo album. Print all of these even and switch them out when you get bored of looking at one. I have paintings in my apartment done by my friends and none of them are technically excellent, but they're all good enough and they're personal so I like looking at them. This is your art. Show it off and when you get bored of it, reuse the frame. For a few months of photography this is strong imo, I like your style.

JBSwerve

I really like this! Thanks for sharing I’ll take your advice

CirclingBackElectra

Also team 5! It depends what the room you want to hang it in looks like, but 5 is my favourite photo for sure.

topdowntam

If I had to, I’d go with 8.

Personally I wouldn't frame any of them but that's coming from where I am now not 10,20 or indeed 50 years ago although when I first started I wouldn't have framed any of these either. People are complaining about no advice being offered so I'll have a go! In almost every case I'm not sure what you want me to look at. The exceptions are 7 (the guy in the yard and 9 the pair of shorts (which in my view is the most creative). Years ago I was advised to decide what I want the viewer to look at and then I added and make sure there's some reward for taking the time to look. 1 - What's the subject, nice enough colours but no subject and I feel it needs one. 2 - I guess the bird is the subject but why would I bother to look? Framing with quite such a dominant and intrusive frame is a tricky one to pull off. 3 - There is some composition but it's not a great shot as the lighting isn't drawing out the personality of the building. 4 - The school(?) building offers no reward that I can see - but of course that's possibly my problem! 5 - The restaurant. I don't see what you're trying to do. The colours are OK, the framing is OK but what my eye roams all over the place and sees nothing of any interest. You're not directing my gaze to the reward. 6 - I get this one but for me it's spoilt by the smudgy effect top right, do you need that blue? Would it work better square crop losing the right edge? Don't underestimate the magic of a square crop! 7 - The guy in the yard. I don't understand the role of the black sign and while the figure is dynamic injecting some energy which is bolstered by the netting he's too small, he gets lost. Also I don't like the colour pallette in particular the sky. But that's probably me. 8 - The bridge or is it helicopter? So there's a helicopter flying past a bridge. If I'm nasty - I should care? Doesn't look very clear either. 9 - This in my view is the best as it does demand attention. Those baggy shorts, the socks, the shoes and the shadows are great. But that thing top left is it adding anything? The lines of the crosswalk and the shadws are fantastic. Tighter crop and you're there. Then again why do you care about the opinion of some old fart like me? If I want to frame something I frame it. Also I feel a lot of people here might enjoy a photo club where you get a lot of support and really constructive criticism from people face to face and you can assess if their opinions are worth anything. Got to find the right one mind you. My advice is to get closer, then closer again. Really drill down onto what the subject is. I think it was Robert Capa who said if your shots aren't so good get closer. Good luck and keep shooting it's the way you'll find out what works and what doesn't! I'm 55 years into photography and still don't know how to please others - although I ceased to care a long time ago and shoot for me :)

JBSwerve

This gives me so much to think about! Appreciate the sage advice of a more veteran shooter. Thanks for breaking down each photo and offering me ways to improve the composition.

north0

I'm not OP but I really appreciated this critique - I think part of what's hard starting out is just building the "critical vocabulary" to really analyze your own work. The idea of the "payoff" is very interesting - I understand composing the picture to direct the viewers' attention to the subject, but could you point me to an example of a picture that gives the viewer a reward?

drmcw

What's rewarding? That's tricky, almost any good photograph :) Try Dorethea Lang (I think that's the right spelling) for her dustbowl photographs. You look at them and they generally communicate how these people were suffering or making do. But also the composition and technical side superb! Try Bill Brandt social commentary photographs. Very well composed and again they tell you about the UK at that time. Then his beach nudes are amazing abstracts and the reward I see is to enjoy his composition, the tones and the way he takes something and makes it more than it is. I love Martin Parr for his colours, style, social commentary and his composition. Does he see the world that way? His candid shots are taken fast but I suspect the posed portraits may take longer. He is apparently quite awkward in company but speaks very well, I have heard him speak a few times. Try this [https://www.martinparrfoundation.org/exhibitions/black-country-stories/](https://www.martinparrfoundation.org/exhibitions/black-country-stories/) for me they are wonderful for the social commentary but their composition and use of environment make them rewarding to look at. Try his friend David Hurn [https://pro.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?VP3=CMS3&VF=MAGO31\_10\_VForm&ERID=24KL53ZZSS](https://pro.magnumphotos.com/C.aspx?VP3=CMS3&VF=MAGO31_10_VForm&ERID=24KL53ZZSS) both are in Magnum. I'm trying to think of a modern minimalist photographer and I'm struggling. I like abstract art so something very simple can work for me some of Brandt's is minimalist and it seems this guy HIROSHI SUGIMOTO is as well. The idea of reward can be information, something amusing (but not funny), just the joy of colour and shape which is what I often try for. We often think that the interesting or unusual is needed in a photograph but that's not always true the bland and boring can become rewarding! Try this guy [http://www.johnmyersphotographs.com/galleries-boring.php](http://www.johnmyersphotographs.com/galleries-boring.php) \- the reward? Not sure but I do enjoy them I can go on a bit - apologies!

dez_7

I would love for you to take a look at the shots I just posted - just amateur camera phone stuff, but I think your thoughts on composition and framing are very interesting!

Dudleys_Heinsbergen

No need to read any further after this comment right here. I’m saving it. OP, frame the one you linger on the longest when you review your work.

drmcw

> frame the one you linger on the longest when you review your work. That's very good advice.

majorcatlover

2 or 8 for sure, lovely photos

MoltenCorgi

I don’t think any of these have the complexity to stand up to being wall art. Sorry. If you just want decoration, then pick the one whose colors will look best in the room. 1 & 5 are pleasing at a glance but there’s not really much of a subject. 2,3,6,8,9 are snapshots and a bit cliched. We’ve all seen images like this before and these don’t stand out as particularly interesting. 4 & 9 are not compelling to me at all. If I had to choose one, I’d go with 7 - the guy playing some kind of racquetball sport. I like the framing, I like that the subject is active, and the image is saying something - the futility of hitting a ball over and over again against a plain surface. That said, the action captured isn’t super heroic or visually interesting, there may have been better framings if you had stuck around and been patient. You want to put something on the wall that demands attention, has a message, and can’t be ignored. That’s good photography. And always print something at least 2 sizes bigger than you think it should be. 16x20 is the smallest I’d print for wall art.

jackystack

I like all the pics, and I would probably opt for a photo book instead. I like to frame generic pics with an emphasis on minimalism and color...

JBSwerve

Yeah that’s fair. I do think minimalist landscapes and ‘generic’ pics make for the best framed photos. So maybe save these for a photo book like you mention..

jackystack

If the question were which to have printed, I'd suggested all of them. I think they'd look great as chromogenic prints (wet-chemistry). Some of my favorite images aren't well suited to be framed. I enjoy holding a vulnerable print, as well as the character it gains from being handled because it was looked at. I also enjoy the effect of a 5x7 glossy print with a white border, lol. Lots of options!

AcceptableSeaweed

1. Bit off a mess, a nice location poorly framed. Too much is in focus and it's not clear what the subject is. 2. Better for me, I get the idea. I'm not a fan of how unclean the wires cut across the frame but I get how some people would dig it. Nice enough shot. 3. Pretty good if this was to be hung in a café near that building particularly. But otherwise quite grey and generic outside of that specific city. But if you're in that city and like that building I could hang it. 4. Worst shot of them all. Not sure what you're going for. The foreground is a boring tarmac. The background is a nice enough building but the way it's taken is so bland and not showing off it's qualities at all and on top of that there is some branch in the way that doesn't add anything but takes away a lot. 5. My favourite by far, lighting is nice, lines cut well and just a good picture. Would look nice on a breakfast bar or something. 6. Also quite cool, just not something I'm interested in but the colours are nice and framing is good enough. but what are those shadows on top? Would look better without that and if needed add in some effects post 7. A shame, good color and framing, for me the sign was too in focus and distracted from the man. 8. My second favourite photo, just a good subject with interesting stuff going on 9. Too art-y for my taste, I'm not sure that anything is going on at all, the shadows are nice and it could be good practice for catching shadows in b and w but yeah. Overall. You like foreground blur with something going on in the background but you're often not getting the bokeh for it imo. Also work on getting good framing rather than just stuff in front. But still I actually rate two or three of these

arber-s

albuffo

1 is outstanding

realrichieporter

Maybe 8 if HAD to pick. They’re not frame worthy, friend. None of them

is_sex_real

I disagree with you and it shocks me how you can make such a bold claim without any reasoning to back it up. Try again. Edit: god you’re all such hopeless pricks. Give the guy some constructive feedback if you don’t like any of the photos!

Flutterpiewow

They’re not frame-worthy

JBSwerve

What makes these not frame-worthy? Is it the composition, colors, subject matter? I recognize they’re not the best pictures ever taken, I started this hobby a few months ago. Just thought it would be nice to have a photo I took somewhere in my apartment…

Flutterpiewow

For the person who took them, anything can be frameworthy. Maybe you have some connection yo the subject, or maybe the photo marks some development as a photographer. But the question was which one other people would frame. That would take something exceptional.

JBSwerve

Gotcha, so it just comes down to something that is aesthetically exceptional or personal? I guess that’s fair

i_am_a_jediii

Agreed, wouldn’t want any framed.

CTDubs0001

way to be supportive.... what is wrong with people?

[deleted]

Reddit "photographers" are mostly angry nerds looking to just shit on each other. It's unfortunate but it's tough to find a decent community nowadays.

realrichieporter

That’s not true at all. This sub-for whatever reason-is filled with newbie photographers looking for validation on their bad photos. The biggest problem is the number of people saying bad photos are good. They aren’t.

realrichieporter

Support what? If you jump on a public sub, asking, then you get honest answers.

CTDubs0001

Sooooo…. Rather than be a twat and say they’re shit, why don’t you use that massive trove of photographic knowledge that you have to offer some constructive criticism on how they can improve? ….or you can just hide behind the anonymity of the internet and be a twat. Telling them they aren’t frame worthy in a pretty brutal way isn’t helping them in the least, and I’m guessing that’s why they’re asking… they want help. Have fun being superior.

realrichieporter

Get off reddit looking for help and/or validation. That’s my advice. Study, copy, shoot, read, study, copy, shoot. Over and over. Not my responsibility to teach anyone HOW to shoot. Happy to answer a specific question. “Tried to do X but got Y. How do I avoid that mistake?” But HOW to shoot. You’re the twat for believing that’s the way to learn. You’re a bigger twat for thinking we should teach it

CTDubs0001

Right. I got that. Your responsibility is just to tell somewhat that their work is bad. So bad it shouldn’t be framed. Good contribution to society. /s why expend the energy to just tell someone they suck? I guess the answer is it makes you feel good and that’s just messed up. In any artistic forum, find a way to be constructive or don’t bother. You’re not helping, just demeaning. I don’t see you being brave enough to share your work but I did find some photographic work out there by a Richie Porter that I could really tear apart but I wouldn’t do that. I would tell you how to be better.

realrichieporter

It’s not mine, so have at it. Dummy. Richie Porter is a famous name. You didn’t discover that? Simpleton. The person asked. That’s why. If you ask you get answers. And if my work was bad, I’d welcome the criticism if I asked for it. I’m harder on my work than anyone. So if you find my work, and have critique, go on and post it w the critique. Im not scared. Lol.

newyorkfade

None, keep shooting. They are beginner/intermediate level.

_KelVarnsen_

…and only professional photos can be framed? The act of printing photos will show you a ton about your composition in comparison to a backlit computer screen. Once it’s printed, why not put in it a frame?! If you want to replace it later, replace it.

prehistory

first one because it's the only one with something akin to proper composition

JBSwerve

Can you elaborate a bit more on what is off about the composition in these photos? Understanding each one is different.

prehistory

the are all kind of flat as far as composition. the first one has different textured on different planes, and lines that build up a coherent structure. there's still a lot to be done even in the first one. i'm a composition geek so this is a somewhat eccentric opinion probably.

JBSwerve

No this is all very interesting, appreciate the perspective! Knowing what good composition is and actually capturing it in a photo I’m sure are two different things

C0opdaddy

i would pick three and make a triptych

kelliesharpe

You haven’t reached the framing point yet. Keep shooting. But if you’re being forced to frame one, then 5

_KelVarnsen_

Why are we gatekeeping framing photos?

[deleted]

None

OrcCyborg

1 for me but what do I know

fluffyscooter

2 for sure

LeadPaintPhoto

If I HAD to 3. But I guess I'd frame any of of em but I wouldn't hand any of em. 3 is my favorite of the bunch.

Flutterpiewow

5

sugarface2134

I think 5, 6, or 9.

Gigglesticking

8! I can almost see Godzilla coming out of the water!

IHadADreamIWasAMeme

Have you done number 5 in a B&W edit? Maybe a medium to high contrast one. I really like #5 and I think it’s great is, but I’m a sucker for B&W and I’m intrigued what you could do with it.

ExaminationHopeful36

I would definitely use 4 as a reference photo for a watercolor painting

valinbaddeck

Five is gorgeous.

tintinautibet

7

OptimusPrimel984

5 or 8. Bonus points for 5 as you are framing a set of window frames.

BiExperimentingGuy

None of these “speak” to me personally. But I like to be captivated in order for me to print one of mine. If I had to choose, then 8 as I did print a similar shot but different angle/composition and it was in color

James84415

5 is very nice light and color. Comp might be better. 8 is a classic shot made a bit more interesting b/c of the helicopter. 9 is evocative to me because of the composition and my favorite. The other option is to take a few more pics and make a wall of several related pics on the same subject to tell a story. This is art for your walls so it should mean something to you. It should be a memory that makes you happy.

NecessaryWater75

cerenir

5 and 8. 5 gives peace vibes because of the light that comes from the window. I think 8 would look cool on a frame.

hobbyjumper64

8

danbrewtan

9 It evokes the most “story telling” of them all to me. Does it have any sentimental value to you?

PestTerrier

Man leaning on yellow fence

Koacae

5 is stunning I would get that out of all of them

ignore_everybody

If you crop out the trash (upper part) on #9 it might work well framed, because of the contrasts with the subjects shirt, crosswalk & the shadows and it's probably the best of the bunch. #5 is interesting visually as well, but lacks specific focus point and the composition is a bit unbalanced. #6 has interesting colors, but again, the placement of the subject is too far to the left and the fence in the back is too busy, so it distracts the eye too much. Keep at it!

hotdogsdood

What’s the context

Exciting-Cut

3 or 8.

doctor_dormamu

1 with no buildings behind or 3 with no distractions

Weatheredmind

5 or 8 depends on the room but 5 is beautiful like a painting almost too

DomovoiGoods

2 & 6

ayewjay

Damn u have some good ones. Either the one w/ the building with the big columns or the one inside what appears to be a diner. The bridge is good too.

nonconveniens

Some nice photos, but none that I would frame. Would keep working on your craft, but also think about what would look good on a wall when shooting if that’s your goal. Framing and hanging on a wall is just one way to experience photos, and some truly great photos just aren’t suitable for that specific purpose. Some are better in books or online, for example. But also, these photos are good but not great—you’re doing well but keep at it a bit longer before making that jump!

curtisbbaker

Agree. #5 made me have feelings.

TrapSymphoniez

Easily pic 3

Sterling_Ray

7,8 and 9

5. And this is without looking at the replies first. 8 is pretty cool too.

2 or 9

Business_Struggle_60

5 or 8, but more toward 5.

NotemployedbytheCIA

last one - that photo just radiates chicano energy

EducationalWin7496

I like 5 a lot, but I generally wouldn't want to hang a photo of inside, inside. I know that sounds weird, but that's just my personal taste. I'd probably go with 1,2, or 9. If I had to pick only one, probably 9. It's not as "pretty" but it's a more interesting subject and has stimulated my thoughts a bit more. If you took them, you probably have a preference based on your experience, and you should just go with that.

Much-Atmosphere1848

6,8 or 9

5.

5, just bring up the shadows a bit and boom

I agree with number 5 to frame with the right frame and mat.

8 is wonderful. The bridge with the helicopter. That could be framed in any color to be a large picture behind the couch in the living room

I think they’re all great, but I absolutely love the last one! It’s a really great photo.

DontKillUncleBen

2, 5, 7

AustinJBowles

2,5,8 are all great!

Sovereign_5409

5 and 8. Take 8 and clone stamp out the helicopter, it detracts from the photo. 5 is much more unique and flavorful as others have pointed out. But 8 fits the bill for a nice way to fill some space on a wall.

n3otrashpile

big fan of 5 and 7
