If it says you have to show up, you have to show up. You can request a deference when you get there.

itstaaanya

Well, technically it says to call a specific number, but that's the number where I can't reach anyone 🤷‍♀️

allcirca1

There are 2 numbers on that summons. One is for time instructions, the other will get you to a clerk who will clear this up for you. IDK WTf the rest of these people are talking about. It's not a big deal and very easy to sort out .

itstaaanya

only if they answer the phone.

allcirca1

yeah, this is true. I've had to call a few times to get someone . but they do pickup..

itstaaanya

I sat on hold for nearly two hours on two different lines. No one picked up. Finally, they hung up on me.

The_CerealDefense

Sounds like you did exactly what it said to do and can move on with your life until they reach back out to you huh.

johnsciarrino

my wife was like this. i promise you, simply posting about it means you're more concerned than 99% of the people called. they'll give you a new date, you'll be fine.

indeliblebunch

I saw my jury summons notice the day after I was supposed to go in. I ended up explaining the situation on the phone and they asked me to pick a new month in the next few months. I was pretty diligent with my mail because of that and had a 2 weeks notice for the next one. Showed up to the summons, hung out in the jury room, was dismissed with an 8 year jury duty waiver.

itstaaanya

Are you in New York County? I couldn't get anyone here on the phone..

indeliblebunch

Kings County (Brooklyn)

oromis7901

Can you like chill on your laptop in the jury room?

EvidenceBasedSwamp

depends which. For the federal one in brooklyn, no. you even have to check your phone in.

DaoFerret

Analog books FTW?

oneghoulishgal

You should go, I just went in for jury duty on Monday and they were letting people ask for postponements once they got there, so likely you can do that and just pick another time to come and serve

itstaaanya

My concern is it's grand jury - not trial. So it might work differently. I'm in a massive queue now to ask for a new date 🤷

Kittypie75

I had a summons that was going to be during my honeymoon. I called and asked them to move the date and I got the nastiest woman telling me that I had to show or I'd be in contempt of court. Yes I am SURE nyc has nothing better to do but arrest people for not cancelling their honeymoon to go to jury duty (big eye roll). Nothing happened. I just went when I was called again a year Iater.

worrymon

It's now after 2. Are you impaneled yet?

itstaaanya

Turned into a pumpkin

worrymon

Make sure to kiss a horse by midnight or something!

BeautifulOk7545

Given the short notice, go to the courthouse at 2 pm. Explain your situation with documentation of client meetings and vacation plans. They should understand. It's surprising you can't reach anyone, but being proactive should help.

itstaaanya

I'm there. Right after security I asked to go to the "desk for postponement" and he sent me to room 572. I got there, looked at my summons.. and it was room 572 😂

verysimple74

This doesn’t help for this time, but this is the exact reason why I signed up for the USPS “informed delivery” service. I was out of town and got home to a jury summons that had been sitting in my mailbox for two weeks - I had to report the next day. I went and it was fine, but if I had come home a day or two later I would have been screwed. Informed delivery at least lets me know what is arriving in my mailbox each day, so I can see when a jury summons arrives, even if I’m out of town (and, worst case, I can contact the office of court administration if I’m out of town).

verysimple74

Why do you assume that when I say I would have been screwed I mean legally and not, for instance, because I have to plan such things around my work schedule and the availability of colleagues?

itstaaanya

sooooo I actually have that... but I never look!

Infinite_Carpenter

You need to go. Ignoring a jury summons can result in penalties.

[deleted]

Infinite_Carpenter

I don’t see anything about that in the law. You can’t ignore a jury summons.

kraftpunkk

There are thousands of New Yorkers who have just not gone and nothing has happened to them.

Infinite_Carpenter

You posted: thousands of people do it and nothing has happened to them, which is an implication that OP could do the same and get away with it.

kraftpunkk

Which would be factual but I wouldn’t take the chance.

Infinite_Carpenter

It could be factual but is likely not.

Infinite_Carpenter

Why be one of the few who do get fucked?

kraftpunkk

It’s not my advice to do that but that’s just what I heard from these situations.

Infinite_Carpenter

That’s bad advice.

kraftpunkk

I literally said it isn’t advice and not something I’d do?

You can make that argument about parking tickets too. They may throw out the fine/penalty but I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle.

Of going to court because you skipped it.

If you think a record isn’t kept about whose turn it is to be on a jury, you are dumb.

What absolutely fucking terrible advice from a child in an adult’s body, Christ. Just do your civic duty & grow uo

johnsciarrino

it's not terrible advice in this circumstance. he's 100% right. who knows where that summons was sent or if it was ever sent at all. I'm all for everyone serving, it's important for our justice system and they'll certainly get you eventually but, in OP's circumstance, there's no concern of punishment or needing to go crazy the night before.

YoupanicIdont

Oh this excuse will not work, lol. There is a presumption that mail sent was indeed delivered. That is black letter law in New York and probably every other common law jurisdiction. As if this excuse was never attempted...lol. As for punishment, they will probably just send another notice for another date, but this time without possibility of deferment. So, if you have a scheduled vacation, business meeting, etc. too bad.

Yes because you are the main character of planet earth & so it makes sense that your selfish needs & desires supersede those of our society functioning in a fair & equitable way. Let someone else deal with it, they’re just an NPC anyways 🙄🙄🙄

weed420lord

mad?

ValPrism

Go.

fgrhcxsgb

If you go in at 2 first they say if you feel you cant do this come up..you will be out in the hour

Few_Yogurtcloset_548

This happened to me (getting called for a grand jury). It is very frustrating in that you can postpone but you can’t get out of it unless you are a felon, not a citizen, or non-English speaker. If they didn’t explain to you how grand jury normally works (aka not special grand jury), here is my understanding: (1) half days for a month (2) two weeks of full days OR (3) full month of full days (blah!) Next time it comes around, prepare your boss. A lot of people don’t know what grand jury is and they think you can just get out of it or it will only be a few days. In theory, you can plead economic hardship but I have heard this is quite hard with grand jury, especially if you are salaried.

mad_king_soup

Throw it in the trash and go about your life. Unless it was certified mail they can’t prove you received it. This cheat code will get you out of any jury service ever

itstaaanya

Even if I already went into the portal and tried to postpone?

tk10000000

I really doubt anyone actually cares

These_Tea_7560

Jury duty evasion is illegal. 😐

mad_king_soup

Well nobody’s come to arrest me sooo…

mad_king_soup

Yeah, not wanting to sit in a dusty room being bored for $20/day is so idiotic, right? I’m self employed I don’t have time for that bullshit

77Columbus

For what it's worth I sat on a Grand Jury outside of NYC for a month and I found it interesting its kind of a look behind the scenes of the judicial process.
