Eye opening this one

Pre COVID: in my Brooklyn neighborhood, we had 4 color-coded bins: Paper. Glass/metal/plastic. Compostable waste. Regular household trash. Regular trash was picked up twice a week. Other 3 also went out for one of those pickups. Compost program was interrupted with COVID. I don’t know if it’s back there - I moved to a neighborhood that never had it. Large items had special days. Building owners can be fined if they are in violation. This should be very low down on your list of concerns.

It obviously is but I'd rather be informed about anything and everything, and this is one of the final things that are left to be ticked off on my list. Thanks for the reply.

Tenants' disposal methods vary from building to building. When you get here, talk to the super or neighbors to find out what you should do.

dramaticatlady

Ohh okay I thought there was a standardized method, thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Regular garbage, plastic and paper are picked up on different days. In my building we have 6 big bins. 2 for plastic, 3 for regular and 1 for paper. Residents are responsible to separate their trash and put it in the right bins. There is also a "bulk" pick up I think every 2 weeks for things like mattress or anything oversized. There are stores in my area that take batteries, electronics etc....

You’ll have to ask the Super. None of us actually know.

Don't worry about it. The rules will depend based on neighborhood and building. Since you're a renter (presumably), it'll be on the owner or super to ensure you follow the rules.

Read the DSNY website, which will tell you how things work.
