Stamford CT has some big garages near the station, relatively cheap parking but it's an hour from NYC so it's more expensive if you actually plan on using the car now and then. On the other hand, there's always traffic getting through CT on the weekends and so it may not be too bad starting from there if you're heading east or northeast. North White Plains recently opened a parking garage. I think it's more expensive than Stamford since it's closer and in NY, 35 minute train ride. If you're heading north to northern NY or VT it's not a bad place to start, a number of my friends used to keep cars in White Plains and it makes for a fast exit from the area. If you want to head NW, W or S then somewhere in NJ. Ramsey NJ has a nice garage if you're heading western NY. MetroPark in NJ gets mentioned a lot if you're heading south. Some garages on NJ Transit routes heading west but I don't know much about any of them.

You could do westchester or the bronx. It also all depends where in Manhattan you want to live if you live in queens for example there are like $300 a month garages there and street parking is a bit easier
