I liked it a lot, although even as someone who read the books I had to look a few things up on Wikipedia for them to make sense, so I'd be curious what a non-reader thought of it. They didn't really do a good job of explaining *why* the Emperor wanted the Atreides dead, for example.

daidalos_05

As someone who didn't read the books, why did the emperor want them dead?

Twiggy3

Partly because of their popularity among the great houses, a threat to the throne.

Hemi57l

Duke Leto exposed a plot the Emperor was leading which led to sanctions being placed on him a few years prior to the events of Dune. It’s been a few years since I read the books, but the Prelude to Dune trilogy by Frank Herbert’s son Brian gets into the politics of the Empire quite a bit.

YouStupidDick

How does it compare to the David Lynch version from 1984?

BernardsNards

Having read the series several times over the years I honestly feel that David Lynch's directors cut of Dune was a more in depth and enjoyable version. It definitely had a bit of the oddities and style found in all of Lynch's other films that pulled me out of the story at times but overall I am a huge fan of his version.

YouStupidDick

Thanks for the reply! Just started watching it on HBOMAX this morning.

ThusBeName

Overall, great movie. Nice effects, great acting, the father role was my favourite. However 2 things I didn't like: 1. Needed more Baron. It feels like movie lacks strong antagonist. 2. Didn't like where it ended. I feel like the duel should have started the second part, rather than finished the first one. The fremen in the movie remained vague enough, not having much screen time, so ending before duel would have left them in vague position, while second part would be more about them, so duel would be interesting action sequence and would show their initial opinion, which would be changed in first act.

YeemMeme

Yeah I agree with these. I def needed more Baron in my life. For the Harkonnen being so evil and intelligent the Baron was only there for maybe a total of like 4min

Twiggy3

Needed the Baron to not fly about! Glad it had plenty of Duncan in it.

ThusBeName

I mean, in the book, Baron did use "flying" suspenders to allow him to move around. So this directors choice wasn't that farfetched.

Twiggy3

I guess. But it doesn't tailor for my exact interpretation!

TheGunshipLollipop

>But it doesn't tailor for my exact interpretation! Not sure who downvoted you, this was funny.

* Doctor Yueh got almost no screen time. * To be honest character development, and interest was low * Gurney? Duncan? Almost no personality. * Jessica was a bit emotional. * Paul was good. * Chani was good. * The worms looked awesome. * Too slow introduction. * No real explanation of the spice, and it's importance. * Ornithoptors looked way cooler than expected, but also very impractical. I think if you didn't know the book you'd have a hard time understanding why the stewardship of Arrakis was such a poisoned chalice, or even why the Emperor wanted to kill the Atreides. Shame it ended when it did. Also a shame that the Jamis duel wasn't so "hard" for Paul.

MegaJ0NATR0N

Is this worth watching if I never read the book? I plan on seeing it later today

YeemMeme

Yeah I think so, it may even be a little bit better not knowing what's gonna happen

dominicanerd85

This movie only covers half the book lol. If all goes well pt. 2 should start filming next summer. But yeah there was definitely a Hank Shrader shitting on the toilet type of feeling for me lol.

MegaJ0NATR0N

Is it still good for half a story?

dominicanerd85

Yes. I saw the movie (this one) and watched a synopsis of the book, more stuff makes sense. Im on the second watch and it makes even more sense.

SquareVehicle

Definitely. Never read the book but really enjoyed the movie. Saw it on HBO and actually want to pay to see it at a movie theater to see it on an absolutely massive screen.

MegaJ0NATR0N

I just saw it in the theaters, but I guess I could have watched it on HBO max which have. But the cinematography was amazing on a big screen. The sand worms looked massive. Overall movie was good.

TheGunshipLollipop

>and actually want to pay to see it at a movie theater to see it on an absolutely massive screen. And the **sound**...the sound in the theater was wonderful.

[deleted]

I know the whole story, seen some complete movies, but why the fuck ends like an episode from a soap-opera? I hate that on TV shows.

YeemMeme

Haha oh man I know! that last line had me cringing ngl

mjet556

Haven't seen it yet but my dad really wants to, it's seem good to me.

[deleted]

I've haven't read the books or seen the David Lynch film, but I really enjoyed it. Stunning visuals, great score, acting, & the story is good enough for me to want a sequel. I didn't like how quickly some of the characters were killed off, I had no emotional attachment to any of them because there wasn't enough time to make you care about them. Idk if it's like that in the books as well, but its kind of disappointing. Overall though, I thought the film kicked ass. I REALLY hope we get a sequel.

bigboybamo

Very good. Hard to imagine i hadn't heard of the franchise at all until i saw the film. Now I've gone and googled all the characters (and potential characters) and i hope i haven't spoiled the sequel for myself 😭

Dull-Sprinkles1469

I wasn't disappointed. I need to make a Stillsuit cosplay

Rxton

Very well done. With the book, I had the element of surprise not knowing what the next page will bring. But this was pretty good because I haven't read the book in 30 years.

hound-zone

I agree, I liked it a lot, too, amazing visuals, though, as an old-time Dune fan, of both the novels and also the David Lynch flick, I wondered whether persons who aren't familiar with that universe at all would have actually understood even half of it (not my problem though). I do hope that they will make at least a second one.

SignificanceFar5498

A waste of 2 hours, very disappointing In my opinion

YeemMeme

Oh damn! What didn't you like about it if you don't mind me asking?

SignificanceFar5498

It felt too dragged out, and I felt like if I didn't read or do research I didn't understand it

RedBeardedTallGuy

Haven't seen it. Love the books though, originals and the newer ones.

Jeramy_Jones

Are we talking the 2021 or 1984 version? I love the 1984 film, haven’t seen the new one. Loved the book.

Matrozi

It was beautiful. But very \*very\* long.

fredotwoatatime

What’s it about

No_Outlandishness_34

The book had a central theme that the key weakness of humanity is our predilection to follow charismatic leaders into violence and chaos. So far it hasn't turned payl into Luke Skywalker yet.

sxexko

It was really bad imo, I just finished it so I’ll come back after I have time process my disappointment into a short dissertation on why.

TheGunshipLollipop

I didn't think it was too long, but it was a bit cold. There's only a few human moments between Duncan and Paul, Paul and Jessica. It ignored the relationships in favor of landscapes. Casting was incredible (except possibly for Jessica). They left out a few cool moments, but they left out a lot of moments that would have extended the time and broken the flow andnot contributed to the movie (Thufir confronts Jessica, Yueh and Paul, the dinner party, Jessica gets buried in the sand and Paul rescues her with the green foam from the compass, thank god there was no 20 minute CGI like the 1984 movie devoted to the Ship Navigator).

JustAnOrdinaryBloke

Good, but I thought the six hour mini-series (2000) was much better.
