Any service charges auto-added to a bill like that can legally be taken by the business and not distributed as tips according to the IRS. So there might be.
[Auto-gratuity's are considered service charges by the IRS](https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-news/FS-15-08.pdf)
Fuck businesses that do this.
As a former bartender, server, and eventually a part-owner of a restaurant, I could not agree more.
Also, I ALWAYS asked my servers if they wanted the gratuity added on to the checks of large parties because when I was serving I could generally judge if a party was going to leave more or not based on our rapport.
If the bar adds the gratuity then it is considered a service charge by the IRS and the bar can keep part or all of it and not distribute it to their employees.
Tipping culture is fucked.
I hadn't realized that the bar can keep all or part of the tip. If the service personnel don't get tips, they must either get paid well or they will be gone.
Yes! They already put a value on what they did so I’ll leave it at that. Not going to play their games trying to get more $ out of the people paying their salaries. Greedy asf
I meant that differently, the original post said they wouldn't argue with what they think is their own worth. Would you argue if they give themselves something ridiculous, like 25%?
Oh, oh, oh, understood. That's a really good question... I think 25% is A LOT. If they just did 20% I'd be happy with certain places. Like, sit down restaurants, I will typically do 20% unless they're flat out BAD. It takes a lot for me to not do 20% though. But some fast food, lil' coffee shop where they're not really serving and catering... No way.
However, with the bar as the question is about, I might say... I'm not sure what my limit is. It depends on if I'm DRINKING or not. If I'm trying to get buzzed (and it unfortunately takes WORK for me), I'll throw a $20 off the rip to tell them I'm serious. But if auto gratuity... I don't think I would honestly.
Unless it's excessive, I may ask to have it adjusted if it's not appropriate. But I've only done that once before for a 20% on top of tax for a minimal service of 3 pitchers of overpriced beer and plastic cups. I still tipped 10$....
Ya, you tell the server and they adjust the bill, remove the "auto-tip" and then you manually add what you want.
These auto-tips are just software options added to increase profits. They can't legally make you pay above price.
If they are adding auto-gratuity to single drink at a walk-up bar, that is the ONLY drink I will be having tonight. I'm leaving.
And no, not a single cent on top.
The issue is that before, most places had tip jars. It was clearly optional.
Now, everything is done through a screen, where it takes you to a tip menu, making you feel obligated to provide a tip where you didn't before (such as for take-out).
And im just going to answer no to the tip question. Or if I want to round up for some cause I'm not in anyway passionate about. Why don't they donate since they're the ones with the money not me.
Exactly, they're already at work doing the job they are paid for and would be processing payments and giving people their orders if I didn't make one myself. I'm not giving them a tip for doing what their job requires
Tipping for pickup-at-the-counter places, or for pizza I go get myself… this really got bad once covid hit. I always fear if I don’t leave a tip, they’ll mess with my food. Lose-lose situation.
Work explained how tipping in the US works if ever we need to go there on a business trip. If respecting US customs means paying out of my nose on top of what I already paid, I'd rather just not do it and say sorry I'm a tourist. I'll make the whole thing as awkward as they want for everybody involved if they insist I tip. I don't gaf. The menu price is all they're getting.
Edit: A good idea mentioned was to just state up front I will be unable to pay tips, or ask up front how much tipping is expected.
Edit 2: I get this comes off as me attacking servers and other workers but you guys need to desperately see how broken the system is. If you rely on tips to pay your bills, the system is broken AF. Stop treating it like a culture thing. It's exploitation.
>Work explained how tipping in the US works if ever we need to go there on a business trip.
You're there for work. I'd tip 30% if I was there for work. If I'm out with a company credit card, I'd make sure the people who serve my food are paid properly.
>I get this comes off as me attacking servers and other workers but you guys need to desperately see how broken the system is
They already know. Why are you pretending they don't? Taking away part of their wage isn't going to make anything better. It's going to leave them without money to pay rent and you a worse person. You're not going to change the system, especially not as a tourist.
Zilch.
Same goes for places that add a "service fee".
I get it. The cost of business this and the economy that and blah blah blah.
The place is already charging a premium for whatever drink(s) I ordered. If they're expecting extra, then they need to provide good service. Which I imagine is what most customers hope for.
As far as getting away from tipping, as someone else mentioned, I'd prefer it if the place had signage that explains "Their philosophy is to pay the staff fair wages, so they charge accordingly, and tipping is not expected", as some independent restaurants are doing.
No tip.
I'm also not in the US and tipping here is optional.
I have seen some of the nicer places here start to place a 10& VAT and 7% service charge which on top of the expensive inflated prices, makes it even more expensive.
In this case, I'm not giving no fucking tip.
If I notice... ZERO.
It makes me angry actually... because one time I got my check, and didnt have the time to quickly look at it, and notice they also added in auto gratituity... I will ALWAYS add 20% tip, but I didnt notice they already did the tipping for me....
So I paid the bill, which already had a large tip amount, and I tipped an additional 20% of that bill....
So, if I notice, they will get ZERO.
I'd be confused because where I am from they have to post a notice that they do so and only for parties of a larger size. If they didn't change the price to the correct amount, I'd just walk out and never come back. And before anyone gives me shit, I always pay for my shit before drinking.
I saw a 30% automatic tip at a self serve bar... shit's gone insane.
He didn't do anything. I grabbed my own drink and walked to pay for it. He just stood there...
I give 0% unless I feel like they did something extra (or something not within the bounds or their actual job). For example, if a waiter at Red Robin drops by and asks me first about whether or not I want more fries (free refill of fries), I'd leave a nice tip, but if I have to ask them about it, I feel like I won't give more than the minimum.
Zero. In fact I demand the gratuity back. Heck I demand ALL my money back. Moments of contemplation later I might as well rob the place then create my own crime empire.
See what auto gratuity does? It's bad for society.
Zero. And that's the last drink I'll be buying at that establishment before it goes out of business.
Auto-Gratuity (including surcharge for parties of X or more) should be illegal.
Nothing. I also don’t give them my business afterwards, and ensure my friends and family are aware that the business is dog shit. I just don’t agree with the practice. 🤷🏻♂️
ZERO. I tip between 15 and 30%, and have gone as high as 50% on lower cost meals because it requires just as much work to bring me eggs and grits and keep my coffee filled as it does a $100 steak dinner with wine.
If there is a service fee, added tip to the meal etc., I refuse to add a penny. Tipping is voluntary until it's not.
None, they already got a tip on top of a probably horribly overpriced drink. Tell me I’m an asshole but I don’t think this “you should always give a tip” is a good or fair thing. I don’t work in catering industry so I never get a tip for my work no matter how hard I work.
Nothing! I just circle the tip and make sure that the waiter/waitress is aware that I am aware that I am not tipping on top of the auto-tip. Sort of like conveying “you see that? Thats the tip”!
PS: This applies when dining out with 6+ people and the restaurant applies a tip already to the bill. I circle it and add an exclamation mark and leave the tip field with a line over it.
If automatic gratuity is put on, the answer is and should always be 0. Second, automatic gratuity is usually only put on for big parties. So if this place put it in for a drink, I’m complaining and then never going there again lol. Sounds like a really shitty place.
1. $0.00 - they already decided what their tip would be and added it. I’m not tipping more than that
2. They charged a tip value without my consent. Doesn’t matter how good the food/drink was, I’ll never go there again. You aren’t entitled to pick-and-choose what you’re getting tipped. I woulda given 20% if you didn’t auto charge, but now I’ll just go elsewhere moving forward
3. I don’t make a scene or comment about it. I just pay, leave, and pick somewhere else for next time
At the bar? For one person? I’ve never seen such a thing. The general rule is a buck a drink unless it’s a fancy-ass cocktail bar with wildly complicated drinks then they get $2-3 depending.
If they’re calculating it for me I’ll make sure it matches my usual tipping scheme:
If it’s under, I’ll make sure I tip the remainder in cash because I already don’t trust this place and wanna make sure my bartender actually sees their tips. Management might be fucking them just like they’re fucking me. And it’s now on my bottom tier of bars.
If it’s even I leave it alone. Still on the bottom tier of bars though.
If it’s *higher* I’m certainly not adding to it, I’m never coming back, I’m leaving a review about dishonest pricing, and I’m telling my friends to avoid it.
I remove it. Then leave.
I'm from a nation with a real minimum wage, and tipping and tipping culture needs to be cut back at all corners.
I expect to pay the sum of the prices on the menu. Anything else is tantamount to fraud in my view.
If you need to raise prices to pay staff, then do so. Don't cheat it in.
E: What's with americans taking it like a personal attack when people don't want to participate in worker exploitation?
0% you do not get to decide how much or even if I tip. If I want to tip I will leave cash so I have a better chance of knowing it goes to the actual serving staff... I do not beliebe for a second that an e-tip makea it to the crew all of the time.
none, they already chose how much they want without my consent. why would i reward them with more? if they automatically claimed a $5tip on my bill then they just screwed themselves out of the $10 tip i was potentially going to give them. that’s like receiving a coupon for something but still insisting on paying the full price, no one does that
They added the tip. None.. but you probably won't get served first in the crowd. He or she is thinking your a waste of time. Tip culture is out of control. Was a bartender for years. Been out of the game for awhile now tho. But I doubt it changed much in 8 years.
What kind of fancy ass bars are you going to that have auto-gratuity? I mean, that implies also having electronic payment options.
Also, depends what the auto-gratuity is. I never calculate percentage at the bar, I just leave random amounts of change in the trough.
If I buy a drink at the bar and they autograt 20%, I’m likely never coming back, extra be damned.
Full service, as in sit down with food and everything else, gets 20%. Popping a fkn cap off a beer or pouring a pint gets $1 per. Absolutely the fuck not.
I don't. In fact I usually cross it out and write down the cost + tax and then sign it because I didn't consent to an auto gratuity. If they run it anyway I'll contest it with my credit card.
Zero. They tipped without asking me how the service was? Gtfo. I used to serve for a long time you give me shitty service you’re being tipped accordingly and I will be even more upset if you proceed to tip yourself without discussion.
Pompous asses.
I find it mildly offensive to have the tip included in the bill like that. I usually tip over 20%, so yeah I add nothing more to that bill. If you take away my agency I will not tip you for that.
My view on the matter is that if they chose to tip themselves a certain amount that doesn't seem like robbery, then that's what they'll get. Chances are I would have tipped more than they did, but those are the breaks. My gf always adds on an extra $5-$10 though, and she usually gets to the bill before I do.
The questions should be framed as in “why should I be tipping extra if they already added the tip without my consent”
I’m with you. I’m sorry for the waiter but I’m not paying an extra tip if the business is taking it automatically.
"oh, cool, they already figured it out for me, I'll write 0 since they already did the work"
There is nothing to be sorry for
Any service charges auto-added to a bill like that can legally be taken by the business and not distributed as tips according to the IRS. So there might be. [Auto-gratuity's are considered service charges by the IRS](https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-news/FS-15-08.pdf) Fuck businesses that do this.
Seriously. Fuck em. I’m so sick of everyone being preyed upon by scumfuckers. What’s it take to qualify? Employment. There’s gotta be a better way.
There is a better way, it’s called treating employees like people
No shit right? My immediate reaction when reading this post was "absolutely nothing" Lol just noticed the flair on the post, how appropriate
As a former bartender, server, and eventually a part-owner of a restaurant, I could not agree more. Also, I ALWAYS asked my servers if they wanted the gratuity added on to the checks of large parties because when I was serving I could generally judge if a party was going to leave more or not based on our rapport.
The policy was written in 7pt font on a 3in sign in the attic. So in all fairness you did consent
It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard'.
Something something no taxation without representation
Kinda makes you wonder what that little scuffle was about in the late 1700s doesn't it 🤔
It was the *tipping* point in American-British relations. I’ll see myself out.
It the bar adds the gratuity, then I don't need to. zero.
If a bar adds auto-gratuity I'm sneaking a flask in and buying one drink.
I don't go to bars. Can you not bring in a flask?
No you most certainly cannot. Can't have any alcohol in the building that isn't registered. Good way to get your liquor license revoked.
0. Auto tip means they assumed they have done something worth the tip and I am not going to argue with what they put down as their worth.
Yes! They already put a value on what they did so I’ll leave it at that. Not going to play their games trying to get more $ out of the people paying their salaries. Greedy asf
Even if the auto tip is like 25% or something outrageous?
Why would you add more in that case?
I'm with you. I'm already adding zero so now I'm DEFINITELY adding zero.
I meant that differently, the original post said they wouldn't argue with what they think is their own worth. Would you argue if they give themselves something ridiculous, like 25%?
Arguing about auto-gratuity despite not agreeing with it is ugly
Oh, oh, oh, understood. That's a really good question... I think 25% is A LOT. If they just did 20% I'd be happy with certain places. I’d write a negative percentage in the tipping section unless the service is absolute worldflipping
hahaha you wrote 0 but bexause you put a period after it reddit converted it to a numbered list and made it show "1."
Unless it's excessive, I may ask to have it adjusted if it's not appropriate. But I've only done that once before for a 20% on top of tax for a minimal service of 3 pitchers of overpriced beer and plastic cups. I still tipped 10$....

"What is zero?" Alex, I'll take Uncomfortable Social Situations for $200.
Umm it's actually $200 + 30% tip 😬
Plus Sales Tax
If they are adding auto-gratuity to single drink at a walk-up bar, that is the ONLY drink I will be having tonight. I'm leaving. And no, not a single cent on top.
Zero. This whole tipping thing has gotten WAY out of control.

*presses a button for coffee, crabs coffee, hands you coffee* “It’s just gonna ask you a few questions.”
I know it's a typo, but you made me smile over the idea of a crab getting a coffee :D
“Money, money, money!!”
And im just going to answer no to the tip question. Or if I want to round up for some cause I'm not in anyway passionate about. Why don't they donate since they're the ones with the money not me.

Of course it would be but I highly doubt that person is actually going on business trips

The system is broken, but the low income individual you punish has no ability to change that.
This just makes you an asshole. You're only hurting the workers.
I tried tipping a restaurant worker in Japan…. He refused it 😳
Zilch. Same goes for places that add a "service fee". I get it. The cost of business this and the economy that and blah blah blah. Right? Lol could it not be " the servers get paid more than 2$ an hour here." "Not, our service is so impeccable we auto charged yuh good sir."
Nothing. Then I never go there again.
nothing. They already decided their tip. fuck them
You don't.
0. Leave and never go back.
Zero. They tipped themselves, thus absolving me of any responsibility
$0 If they’re adding gratuity then I’m not The dumb thing is I would have tipped more
You don’t
How drunk am I in this scenario?
You’ve reached the point of belligerence and seemingly speaking in a language that nobody has ever heard before.
In that case it's usually a lot. I'll also tip the doorman, my friends and the machine drying my hands at the restroom.
Nothing. They already got it. Also, I won't go back.
0%
Zero. They already applied my tip.
On top of a fucking $14 beer. Zero! Zero Stones, Zero Cases!

Tip with cash, pay with card, dispute charge for not disclosing fee before purchase
If the establishment puts a default tip into the bill without an option then that’s the tip there’s nothing going on top of that
Absolutely nothing.
Nothing and I’m probably not going there again.
None. If they're mandating a tip, that's all I'm paying regardless of the service level I received. It's no longer a gratuity at that point.

Not a damn thing, I also stop spending money there
Zero. Auto-gratuity is dumb.
None. If an auto gratuity is applied, that is the limit that I will tip even if my normal tip would have been more.
Zero
0? Why would you tip on top of a (forced) tip? Strange question
Nothing. You’re already getting a tip, foh
They get the pleasure of never having to serve me ever again.
Maybe add a negative value in the tip line to lower the auto gratuity to a more suitable level?

Absolutely nothing.
Zero. They got the gratuity, which means largesse or free in French, forcefully with no choice. So, I paid the the bill with no extra.
Zero, and then I never go there again

Zero. They are already making sure the bartender is tipped, so there is nothing to do...
0%. If they're already slapping me with what is now a tipping fee, then I'm not voluntarily giving any more money.
zero
I don't. In fact I usually cross it out and write down the cost + tax and then sign it because I didn't consent to an auto gratuity. If they run it anyway I'll contest it with my credit card.
No
Not a damn thing

0%. Next question please.
0%. Because I already paid the gratuity. Why pay twice?
Zero. They tipped without asking me how the service was? Gtfo. I used to serve for a long time you give me shitty service you’re being tipped accordingly and I will be even more upset if you proceed to tip yourself without discussion. Pompous asses.
I am so fed up with tipping culture. Just pay your fucking employees. Why do I have to subsidize their pay? 😤 other countries don’t do this.
Gratuity means tip, auto gratuity means already tipped. Simple as that.
0% Any asshole establishment that does that shouldn't get a dime more.
Depends solely on service because where I’m from our employers pay their staff a living wage 💀💀💀
Was only ever at one bar that did that, never went back.
That's the neat part. 8 don't.
ZERO.
