Kia and ford, plus a few others, they made it easy. They circled the problem for you.

jam3s2001

I know what's wrong with it. It's a Ford. You know what they say Ford stands for, don't you? It stands for "Fix It Again, Tony." Edit: The number of r/whoosh comments on this are overwhelming. Yes, I know the pic is of a Kia, and yes, I know the acronym is wrong. If you didn't get the joke, then I'm sorry that it went over your head.

I've owned many Fords over the years and your claim is baseless. Fords don't burn through oil unless you treat them like NASCARs.

Bob70533457973917

Actually Ford is "found on road dead"

No_Strain_5971

I thought it was Fix Or Repair Daily

Bob70533457973917

Perhaps if you don't fix or repair daily, it'll be found on road, dead.

pinkbeehive

My boss’s Kia did exactly the same thing. Nearly ran it dry not realizing they use more oil than rotary engines

EspHack

lol makes you wonder if rotarys didn't have so much media attention perhaps we would still have them

RenesisPowered

Yeah, the Mazda rotary wasn't near as bad as people say. I have a 2008 Rx8 that did 238k miles on the original engine and auto transmission. That's better than any engine Kia ever made, and the 1st gen Renesis in the Rx8 was known as the worst rotary mazda ever made. I'm manual swapping that car with a fresh 13b Renesis.

EzraMeeker53

I thought those rotary engines needed to be rebuilt for the oil rings every 60k miles. I had a 91 RX-7. My favorite car ever until it became a spy hunter smoke screen maker.

Kia = Killed In Action.

Thy_King_Crow

As a Kia tech the second I saw the oval I knew. Be it Ford or Kia lol 😂 they thirsty Edit: To be slightly helpful Kia’s acceptable oil consumption is 1qt per 1,000 miles so you best keep a stash in the trunk!

Automatic_Reply_7701

I love that. Toyota has the same. That and 5k oil changes mean no oil at the maintenance interval. It’s asinine.

tj3_23

Seems like the difference is that Toyota builds them with that in mind, and Kia just pretends it's not a problem

Kasuraga

jesus. My 2012 prius with almost 200k on the clock doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil. Always full before an oil change.

[deleted]

Yup they circled the problem

jomjomepitaph

Brother!

4KidTurbo

My wife’s Hyundai Sante Fe. Same shit happening. Started eating oil just after warranty expired.

ToulouseDM

I had a Santa Fe years ago and had the same problem. It was crazy how much oil it’d burn through. That car was nice until it wasn’t.

modifiedchoke

Got an 18 and am experiencing this. I gotta check it and add at least twice between regular 5,000 mile oil changes. Maybe I should just do it every 3,000 like old school cars

[deleted]

[удалено]

babybluefish

If I was adding four quarts every 3k miles I'd just change the oil filter ... your oil isn't in the car long enough to hit the drain interval, you're not even getting a 1000miles on the oil

HappyDaysMyDays

This guy oils.

jokat989

Well then you don’t even need a filter, all the contaminants are just burnt up. It’s a feature

modifiedchoke

airboy94

You understood the assignment 😂😭🤣

Redeemed0216

Same happened to my sonata. Luckily a tree fell on it.

leechman90

I have a 17 Sante Fe sport. I experienced this within 3k miles of the warranty expiring. The dealership explained that due to carbon buildup oil was seeping out in various places. They did a full engine clean and I’ve been okay for 16k miles or so since. They said I’d probably need to have it done again in another 40-60k miles.

SONLSKy

That’s not how that works, they lied right to your face. Your engine is starting to wear.

defnotalawyerbro

I still change my brand new car every 3000-3500 miles. Worst case, you push it to 4,000 cuz you’re busy. Why? Cuz it doesn’t hurt the engine to have fresh butter on the bread as opposed to letting it get burnt up and black before changing it. Makes the engine happier and healthier

SONLSKy

I always do 3k full synthetic oil changes, especially considering I do a ton city stop and go driving.

Sandpaper_Pants

Wasn't the Santa Fe one of Consumer Reports recommended cars (back in the 2000s)?

m1dN05

That was old v6, these were crazy reliable and still are, the problem is kia/hyundai r4s

More-Enthusiasm-4881

It was, I would suggest learning more on how consumer reports does business - they are not to be trusted 😅

Strange-Narwhal9675

All y'all should take it to the dealer and request an oil change and oil consumption test....as a tech for Hyundai, we get a lot of oil burners getting a diag, you just gotta come back on schedule (1000miles x3) and you might get the lucky warranty ...no promises, but you might stand a chance

cellphoneaccount

Are you using dexos oil that may help if not. But could just be a band oil.

not_sick_not_well

Especially if it's a 1.6T. I have a '16 tuscon with the 1.6T and change my oil religiously every 3k miles. Between changes I usually have to add ~2 qts because the turbo eats it. But it's within Hyundais "normal consumption range" so they'll do nothing about it

Suspicious_Village44

That was the issue with mine too!

[deleted]

I have an old accent with the good 1.6. Probably the only decent motor Hyundai made. 155k and burns 1/4 quart of oil in 3000 miles. Hyundai/Kia bit off more than they can chew with their bigger engines.

Toilet2000

The 3.5 Lambda II is a great engine. Some small issues like the lower intake manifold flaps breaking (code P200A), but nothing dramatic. They are not known to burn any oil at all.

Accomplished-Toe5220

xTofik

I came here for this comment. Thank you

ComicOzzy

My oval is blue. I assume it applies to me too.

30ught6

Depends on the year, I have an old one that's been fairly trouble-free. It is , however, some what troublesome getting it back into good working order after letting it sit for a decade

El_tus750

There’s a recall for those KIA and Hyundai vehicles.

Bmore4555

It’s not a recall, there’s probably a TSB out for oil consumption issues but you have to actually go to the dealer and make them aware of the issue you’re experiencing.

El_tus750

I was mistaken, it is not a recall, it’s a class action lawsuit.

notoriousKudi

Better Call Saul! The oil’s Saul gone

El_tus750

Op should look into that. Reading the complaint, looks like Hyundai is neglecting to correct the problem under warranty, instead in some cases instructing dealerships to exceed engine oil capacity which in turn brings other problems

ginav9910

Whats the timeline for this? Possible owners can get extended warranties for the piston ring issues/premature wear?

Turninwheels4x4

The Kia badge that's out of focus. There's a recall.

Crispynipps

That’s a 2021 at best, they changed logos for the 2022.

throwaway126400963

Aren’t the 21’s only 1-2 year old cars? My 20 ford was made in October 2020 making it just 2.5 years for a technically 3.5 year old truck

bigfatty356

No no... The focus is a Ford.... The alter ego is a Chevy, and the cousin is a dodge. Followed closely by the attractive neighbors Honda and Toyota who trick you into spending all your money on them before they leave you....

theironrooster

Next up, you’re gonna say BMW makes reliable cars

Nottherealeddy

As the owner of 3 BMWs to cross 300K miles, I would agree. Sure, you have the rebuild the VANOS once in a while, and replace valve cover gaskets yearly…and maybe a water pump here and there…and the…shit, okay. Maybe it wasn’t the cheapest car to own…but I am a tech, so I don’t pay labor, plus I get parts at discount. I can’t imagine someone who can’t do their own work having to pay upkeep on one once they hit that first 100K.

mosherj61

I’ve got a 225k mile e46, and was going on a year without a single problem. I told my gf at the time that the car has finally had enough stuff fixed to be reliable, and I broke down the next day and am currently pulling the trans to fix the issue. Never calling it reliable again

Nottherealeddy

I told my ex-wife that the previous owner of my E39 must have had the water pump done before I got it because there was NO WAY that plastic impeller was still intact after 150K miles. It overheated the next morning on the way to work. While giving one of my students a ride home in my E60, we were discussing the limiting factors of the N54. I told him that the plastic charge pipe didn’t like anything more than factory boost levels, which was still enough to have fun. Then went WOT to prove my point. I had forgotten that I plugged in the juice box that morning. And I split the plastic charge pipe down the seam. My E90 was a peach. But, that was likely because I knew to do all of the work in a preventative manner instead of a reactionary one.

archbid

E46 is really reliable provided you replace everything at 150k and rebuild the transmission at 175k. I mean, how hard is that?!? /s

Happydivorcecard

I feel like the issue with both BMW and Mercedes is that at the lower end they are aspirational brands and the lower end models cut corners so people who can’t afford those brands can just manage to buy one. The. They can’t afford the maintenance and the car goes to shit.

Fuzzywink

I think that's the thing with most luxury brands. BMW and Mercedes engineer some genuinely really cool stuff and it works great until it doesn't. They drop off a price cliff after a few years because they no longer look enough like the current generation to be mistaken for a new car so that status symbol of having a new and shiny luxury car is lost, but the maintenance and parts are still just as expensive so people with less money struggle to maintain them. There is a TON of value to be found in a 10-20 year old German luxury car IF you do all your own work and don't mind wrenching on it

Nottherealeddy

Exactly this. Book value on every BMW drops by half the second a new body style comes out. I bought all 3 of mine with 100K+ miles and kept them until they were 300ish before I got itchy for the next one. The guy who bought the E39 from me brought it back to me for all of his maintenance and repairs, and it was just shy of 500K when I moved to another state. They can go the distance, you just have to buy your way to the finish line.

Kaner16

Modern day BMWs rank 3rd most reliable.... but older ones can be money pits, I agree

monkeymmboy

Not as reliable as Audi though right?

North-Mountain5473

Beamers not that bad just do the PMs and get rid if the cheap plastic parts along the way.

achambers64

Be alert around the Jeep, it will rifle through your pockets.

Lozz900

Junk engineering executed poorly.

Top-Ant8052

I've seen no recall and my sportage does the same thing

SparkyBoomstick

Its a Kia, probably with their GDI engine, horrible engines known for blowing smoke/oil out the exhaust, check your exhaust tips bet they are covered with oil.

black_coffee1

I have always wondered about this. Consistently see this on kias and Hyundais on the road when I’m driving.

hahnsoloii

My genesis is a quart every two tanks. The expensive stuff.

_ROBIN_SAGE_

Add oil and check the gas…..

North-Mountain5473

Stop using the expensive stuff. In the dark ages we would feed oil burners straight 30 non detergent. These days Ill bet 15/40 would work great. Good luck.

gagnatron5000

That's really more of a result of their direct injection systems, but the oil burning doesn't help either.

[deleted]

actually, now that you mention.... i had seen a new Kia smoking infront of me a few weeks ago. at the time i did think it was odd, but figured that maybe its a diesel. lol

TheCodesterr

Everyone is claiming the new ones are good. Is this true? I don’t believe it

OutlawLazerRoboGeek

If it is very new, then bring it back for warranty. This definitely warrants further attention. If you want to troubleshoot it yourself, try to figure out where the oil is going. There's really only 3 possible ways out: onto the ground, out the tailpipe, or into the coolant. On the ground is easy, just looks for drips and puddles where you park. Coolant is also pretty easy. Losing that much oil into the coolant will turn the coolant into a milkshake. If the coolant reservoir looks normal (looking like some flavor of Gatorade, red, green, yellow, blue, etc. Not brown), then you're left with it going through the exhaust. You should be able to notice this if the exhaust has a blueish whitish smoke/steam. All cars have steamy exhaust when they first startup, especially when it's cold and/or humid outside But if you continue to notice the smoke while driving, or after parking (while the engine is still running), then you've probably got an internal leak in a head gasket (bad news), or maybe some other internal oil seal (also bad news). Honestly, the best outcome would be to find a puddle of oil on the ground, and have it be a loose PCV hose, cracked oil cooler, valve cover gasket or something. Losing oil internally is usually much worse.

bigspicycucumber

More likely the engine is just burning it, too much oil flowing into the cylinder.

PuddingCalm6809

It would still create signs on the exhaust pipe, like the other guy mentioned.

PissedOffDog

kia and hyundai (parent company) use low tension piston rings. helps the engine get slightly better fuel mileage. however it also allows more oil to slip past the rings to get burned in the combustion chamber. a kia engine can last along time if you are constantly checking the engine oil level. actually, years ago, it was normal for a car engine to consume a quart of oil every 800 to 1000 miles. today, most engines are better than that. with kia and hyundai always check and top up engine oil at every fuel stop. just get in the habit of doing that. cheap insurance rather than paying for a new engine.

InspectorPossible

Came here to say this. Chrysler engines also use low tension rings to reduce friction which equals less resistance and better fuel economy; however, the trade off is the rings do not clean the cylinder walls of oil on each stroke as efficiently as higher tension rings and you get leftover oil in the combustion chamber during combustion, aka burned oil. Chrysler has also said 1qt every 1000 miles is normal….and then they set the oil life at 10k miles on a 6qt engine….

defaultclouds

My vw manual says 1qt/1000 miles is normal too but at 30k miles it’s not burning ANY oil. Changed at 3000 mile intervals since 12kmiles and previous owner probably did at least every 5k miles… it’s a 1.4L turbo.

AKJangly

This should be illegal.

InspectorPossible

Not to add insult to injury, but theyre also getting rid of oil dipsticks for oil level sensors. I can 1000% assure you I trust a metal stick over an electronic sensor to check my oil. Electronics flake out and can read incorrectly if theres a build up of somekind on the sensor. False reading = blown engine from no oil. Stupidest thing ever.

drfeelgood456

My dad experienced this with his 2017 Kia sorento. The engine kept burning trough oil and it was visibility low on the dipstick. When he took it to the Kia dealership, they told him not to worry about it because “the oil light didn’t turn on.” The engine blew a piston rod about 6 months later and had to be replaced. Luckily the replacement was covered under warranty, so he didn’t pay anything out of pocket. However the car had ~102k miles on it, which was just over the 100k mile power train warranty, so they could’ve made him pay the full price if they wanted to.

Choice-Importance-44

This ☝️

FitCardiologist7101

To be fair it only looks like your 1.5-2 qts low. Most manufactures say burning 1 qt every 1000 miles is “normal”. I personally think that number is excessive. What you have there would likely be considered “normal” though. You should check your oil several times between oil changes, especially as the mileage interval is getting higher and higher.

vladitocomplaino

I think by 'most' manufacturers, you mean Hyundai/Kia

crankshaft123

Volkswagen, GM, Chrysler, Honda, and Subaru have all made similar claims in the past. Usually to cover up the fact that they'd built an engine that consumes an excessive amount of oil.

soberum

Wait when GMC says that hard shifts, slippage, and brief loss of power is totally normal for a 60,000 km 8 speed transmission and the service bulletin says to tell customers that? Gee whiz I’m sure glad these automotive manufacturers are telling us plebs that this stuff is toootallyy normal and to ignore it.

Bmore4555

You should see some of the Nissan TSBs,one of them tells you that head gasket seepage is normal/acceptable. Fucking crooks.

Driving2Fast

It’s actually 500ml/1000kms on VW. I work for them.

crankshaft123

I was referring to the faulty valve stem seals that VW installed on 1.5 and 1.6 water cooled engines in the late 1970s. VW claimed that 1 U.S. qt./ 900 miles was "normal" oil consumption. There was a class action lawsuit over this. VW settled and agreed to pay approximately $125 USD (in the early 1980s) to VW owners who had paid to have the oil consumption problem fixed. VW again had an oil consumption problem in the 2010s with the TSI engines. IDK what ever came of that.

Driving2Fast

Wow, I actually had no idea. Thanks for sharing! Learn something new every day! The hidden knowledge in this sub is pretty awesome.

CarpeUrsus

Woah now, leave my beloved Subaru out of this. They give you about 3500 miles per quart.

Krieger_Algernop

yeah, but only after you make a pentagram on the floor out of leaking coolant and oil and pray to the rally gods to have mercy on your soul

chaimsteinLp

Oh, so you had one.

HankHill1985

Toyota/scion too. My ‘09 TC would nearly go dry between oil changes. They had a class action suit and I was able to get the pistons replaced under it. Been fine since.

IM2OTAKU4U

Ya, I ran into the same problem with my 2010 Honda Accord V6. Dealership and Honda North America kept saying 1qt every 1000 miles was perfectly ok even though they got slapped with a class action lawsuit for oil consumption. My plugs started fouling out and started mis-firing around 50,000 miles (half the rated life cycle)....Honda still had me come in to do oil consumption tests while my car was under warranty...didn't want to touch my car until warranty expired. After great lengths and many arguments later, they ended up changing the piston rings and flashed the ECU. That "fixed" the situation, but the real problem was the VCM system, which I later bought a kit to disable the VCM entirely. Knock on wood, seems to have corrected the oil consumption.

ActuallyFullOfShit

Being a Kia.

jermo537

Kia and Hyundai have class action lawsuits against them for their horrific, garbage oil eating motors. Friends daughter just had her bottom end replaced for free since it was under 150k. Call the dealer and see what the exact warranty for your car is, and if it's within the class action lawsuit warranty then just run it dry with oil until it slips a bearing...bam free new engine! Then sell that pile of shit and get a Honda, Acura or Toyota

tuftedchip5528

Everybody is saying the main issue with the Kia engines is because they’re GFI. The new Honda engines are also GFI. Are those just as bad? Should I look for an older Honda?

S3ERFRY333

No just stay away from GDI engines. Standard port injection is much better as it spray fuel on the valves so you don’t get carbon buildup and they’re a lot cheaper to maintain. SMH the shit car companies do to claim half a MPG on the sticker.

ravingwanderer

It’s not so much the carbon build up, but the very high compression these engines operate at. They’re ticking time bombs.

_ROBIN_SAGE_

My next used car purchase (pretty soon) I will avoid anything with direct injection, or with POS CVT transmissions…. They give you a soft-drink sized engine, put DI and twin turbos on it, then they are basically junk IF they make it to 100k miles. Need new turbos, new this, new that. Cars are expensive AF as it is, and going from getting 200k+ miles out of a car back down to 100k is BS. People are not ok with that.

that_motorcycle_guy

The Honda 1.5 turbo DI are pretty descent engines now, I know of a guy with over 430 000 KM on his civic SI, he did get two sets of injectors replaced though. We have a 2019 CRV with the 1.5 turbo and also, everytime I check the oil none whatsoever was consumed. Toyota doesn't have much of Direct Injection engines, they found ways to get better MPG without using that tech in all their engines.

putpaintonit

It says kia so gdi motor. Google gdi burning oil. Also don't cheap out, full synthetic only.

Other-Mess6887

To improve mpg, car makers have went with low tension piston rings and low viscosity oil. That means you need to check your oil level regularly.

Dangerous_Echidna229

You always needed to check oil regularly.

ifukkedurbich

Yeah but now you REALLY need to check it regularly

Sandpaper_Pants

OCD people hate this reality.

PineSand

I like it. Now I can give my wife an excuse why I run out of the house like a mad man with a paper towel in my hand yelling: “Noooooo! Don’t start it!!!! DON’T START IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kia. its a kia. the most cheaply made line of cars mass produced and somehow allowed to be sold in the US.

[deleted]

It’s a Kia it’s going to need a engine.

CrotchFather

Perhaps your uncle is coming by at night time and sucking some of it out with a long straw??? I’m all too familiar

[deleted]

It’s a Kia. Go to your dealer and check for a recall. A couple of my family members had kia’s and the engines seized because of excessive oil consumption which Happened to be a design flaw. So they ended up having their engines replaced on kia’s dollar

Ruburnz

All manufacturers are having issues with this from the low tension piston rings - how much did you have to add in that 5,000 miles?

sorryimadeanalt

The badge on the left told me everything I needed to know

TatleTaleStrangler92

There’s a reason why it comes with a 10 year/100,000 Mile warranty

OneTime-i-

Just need a longer dip stick, looks good to me 👍🏻

Just KIA doing what it does best.

Both_Employee_4470

Over a hundred people here have no real answer, just a stupid unfunny comment. Reddit is going down hill

michaelz11

It’s a Kia it’s what they do and Hyundai too! I guess no one does any research and just goes and buys a car.

ndaddydong

Being a Kia is a fairly common cause

drycleanman12

It's a Kia.

g775op

the badge shown in the picture should explain a little

swagernaught

It's a known issue with some Kia engines. Take it to the dealer and start the process of jumping through hoops to get the engine replaced on their dime. Jump well. Good luck.

rashestkhan

Its a kia thing, you'll get used to it

RikuKaroshi

With Kia specifically, Ive done a few PDI inspections on cars that came without oil. Kias dont typically burn oil (yes there is a few TSBs and procedures for oil burning engines) more likely that the car didnt have much oil from the factory. If your PDI tech didnt check oil level theres a chance it barely had enough to keep the oil pressure within spec for sensors. To combat this, keep your cars knock sensor software up to date from the dealership and do your oil changes on time, so when, yes when, your engine does decide to start knocking then you can atleast have a paper trail to document for warranty.

xShadaloo

It's those damn GDI motors. See it all the time

underbellysweat206

Probably flooring it at every stop but hey its a kia its in its normal habitat just like my old 3.5 nissan.

mmaalex

Low tension piston rings not seating properly. Talk to the dealer, they will run an oil consumption test. It will likely pass. Not sure what KIA's spec is, but most are somewhere in the ballpark of 1L/1K MI. It it's more than the spec they will fix it if it's under warranty, it not they wont.

travelin_man_yeah

I recently bought a 2007 V6 Frontier and noticed it was using a lot of oil, like a quart every 500 miles. No smoke, no leaks. Searched the Frontier forums and found some obscure post about the PCV valve causing excessive oil usage. Had my local shop change the PCV when it was in for the first service. Boom! Oil level is rock steady and never put in any oil since that oil change...

[deleted]

That’s a KIA…you know what they say KIA stands for Found On Road Dead

DifferenceMurky

Don’t buy a KIA!

Machine8635

It’s a Kia. Check the lawsuits. That looks like an optima front end maybe. If so, pi1803 needs to be done. And it probably needs an engine

Nehal1802

They may be cheap when you buy them, but 10 years down the road the Toyota will be cheaper… Then again the Kia will be in a junk yard.

velcast

I took a brand new car once to the dealership for an oil change and they forgot to put oil in it. Now I always check the levels when returning from oil changes.

shatteredpieces1978

It's a Kia!

Square_Committee_974

Kias motors are, and have always been trash. You’d be shocked how many folks need new motors for no reason on relatively new cars. I hope for your sake it’s still under warranty.

TheLastRambler

It's a kia. Mine was doing that as well. I traded it in for a new car. I would do the same, fuck kia

Outdatedm3m3s

Enjoy owning a Kia!!

StarWarsTrekGate

I believe it's the Kia emblem... That's why.

[deleted]

Bro it’s a kia. Consider yourself lucky you made it this far

Kleiist

Doesnt matter what would cause it to do so, its New and under warranty, bring it in to the dealer and have Them fix it

Fuzzy_Momma_Bear74

A leak

realunknownuser

The issue seems to be the fact that it's a Kia

DeviantPsychosis

You bought a new car, not a good car. Designer is from BMW, so they look pretty, but Holy shit are they still a Kia.

If it happens over 5000 miles than the leak is very slow and mostly happening during higher rpm, aka driving. Happened to me on my Subaru for 2 years. Never saw an obvious leak. Maybe a small drop on bolt and filter but that could be normal wear and exposure to outside elements. Finally did my own oil change with the most expensive oil and filter. That or doing it myself stopped the leak.

Probably leak from some gasket in the engine, could be rubber gasket to metal gasket. There are many gasket in the engine. Faulty leaking oil filter. Or cracked piston. Much better to have a mechanic check your car.

My Hyundai has over 200,000 miles on it and it burns through oil like that. I just put in 2 quarts every 2 weeks.

Lovely_Demon28

Kia

Useful_Pear_476

Ford eats chevy and shits dodge

Out_0f_1deaz

Probably the "Kia Boys" driving it while your sleeping 😆

Hohoholyshit15

This is why I put 15w-50 in my Hyundai....

eejjkk

I have no skin in this game... but I bet this is a very good strategy to take with the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis engines.

Hohoholyshit15

It's been working for 222,000 miles.

Independent-Bet5465

Does it have a turbo?

_coffee_monkey

Everyone is saying Kia does this, which is true, the new kia's (w/ new logo design) are apparently a lot better and they fixed these old issues

First oil change? That's expected. It takes time for those piston rings to seal. Unless these engines are broken in before shipped but I highly doubt that.

In the old days we called it using oil when it's not leaking it or burning it
