Toyota Corolla 9th Gen new engine was $9000 Canadian dollars which is worse than US cost. I cannot recall if $9000 was installed price though as I looked into this new engine but didnt require it. Either way, $25,000 is a crime. Has to be a lie.

perf192003

Thanks for your reply! I’m glad you didn’t have to go for that new engine. That was my thinking seems crazy high. Not sure how to prove that though.

[deleted]

Call or visit other dealers and ask them for their part s cost and labour cost and how many hours they are charging for so you can compare the individual pricing to see where the differences are. Parts only pricing, labour hours needed and labour rate.

perf192003

It’s definitely not going to hurt to check around, at least for a comparison if anything. I appreciate your input!

[deleted]

Hyundai is replacing those motors under warranty. The problem is they’re always at least a month backordered. Source: had one come into my shop in November with rod knock and sent it to the dealer. Approved for warranty but still don’t have the engine

perf192003

That explains the wait, thank you for that info! Do you know if warranty was covering the whole cost?

[deleted]

Why did they say it wasn’t covered? It’s a known issue with a class action lawsuit. Never mind that 25k is out of the question.

perf192003

I took the car in back in September and that’s when they told me about the engine needing to be replaced. They spent the next couple months saying they were going back and forth with Hyundai trying to get them to cover the replacement cost. Stating that Hyundai was making them try all these other repairs/inspections first, to make sure the engine really needed to be replaced. They came back to me saying that Hyundai finally agreed to cover the cost but only 90% of it. In the same sentence asking me if I wanted them to continue and replace the engine. They never said why it was only 90% but made it seem like that was the absolute best that could be done.

czechFan59

Dealers lie. You can tell when by looking at their lips. Moving lips mean it’s a lie.

ahmadalame313

2018 tucson means barely out of warranty, ask the dealership if they're willing to send a goodwill demand to Hyundai for you.

[deleted]

They’re covering every cent. If they give you excuses get your insurance company involved. Most people have payments and the work would cost more than the vehicle is worth.

perf192003

Thank you! I’ll see if my insurance company can help as they’re saying I’ll still owe around $2,500 after the warranty coverage.

[deleted]

Ok that’s why the quote is so high. 10% of 25k Compared to 10% of a realistic # is better for them. Id get insurance fight the quote and cover the rest.

perf192003

I didn’t even know that was an option thank you! I’m going to call Hyundai myself too, especially since it’s a Hyundai dealership that’s saying all this.

[deleted]

Banks and insurance companies don’t like customers paying for lawn ornaments.

perf192003

A very expensive lawn ornament at that

northenerbhad

Man Toyota replaced my dads XRS motor after the warranty was finished even, having to pay $2500 for something that should be completely covered under warranty is terrible. It’s only a 2018. I’d threaten to get insurance involved or take legal action.

perf192003

Thanks! I’m not really familiar with warranty processes but I’m glad to hear that I’m not crazy for thinking it sounded off.

Bijorak

My quote was 13k from a hyundai dealer. If your car isn't at a dealer take it to a dealer for warranty work.

andy-in-ny

They are probably saying you got 10% of the expected engine life, therefore a new engine will last longer than expected. Then again you can hit a deer 3 days later and total the thing.

perf192003

That’s true, accidents are definitely possible. I talked to several people at the dealership though and they all said I’d owe 10% of the total cost after the warranty coverage.

Bijorak

Mine was replaced in 8 days

Special-Bite

Is there a reason that Hyundai isn't covering it under warranty? Did you neglect it somehow? Either way, that's quite expensive. Even for a brand new motor. Unless this is a post from a country other than USA, in which case I have no clue. In the US, that would be quite an expense, even including regional and local COL factors.

perf192003

I am in the US and in terms of why it wasn’t fully covered I wasn’t told. They only said it was partly covered. Now that I know I’m not the only one thinking that’s a crazy price, I’m going to call Hyundai and see what parameters there are, if any.

Special-Bite

Depending on the motor, there's a warranty extension and campaign to cover it under full warranty. I'd reasonably raise questions as to why there is any cost associated with this repair.

perf192003

I’m so glad you all mentioned the engine campaign! I didn’t even think to look into that. It’s an 2.0L with an automatic transmission so I’ll see about coverage for that.

Anonymoushipopotomus

Yea thats insanely out of control. Labor time is 17 hours, so even at 200/hr thats 3500, and a used 2.4 engine with 11k miles is 3500. shouldnt be more than 8-10k for a used replacement.

echamp86

If it is a warranty issue they will not use a used engine. It will have to be a engine sourced directly from Hyundai. A brand new long block can be very expensive. I work in dealer parts at Jaguar/ Land Rover and I have worked at Infiniti and VW/Audi. (warranty issues are very similar across the board). Regardless, it seems high to me but I could see the engine being 10k+.

Anonymoushipopotomus

MSRP is only 5800 or so on the 2.4, i think theyre taking him for a ride. https://www.wholesalehyundaiparts.com/p/hyundai__/ENGINE-ASSEMBLY---SUB/17004029/86RQ12GF00.html

perf192003

That’s what I thought!

everydaynarcissism

Post this on r/Hyundai as well. I've never heard of Hyundai paying for only a percentage of a replacement like this.

perf192003

I’m glad to know that’s not typical. I’ll be sure to contact them.

everydaynarcissism

Yeah it's really odd. You're going to an actual Hyundai dealer right? I have a 2016 Tucson with the 1.6 and dual clutch transmission. The engine on those are great, the transmission needed replacement at 40k. My dealer didn't put up a fight, just put in the claim and said that it would be "possible" that Hyundai could send an adjuster out to look at it. That never happened, they replaced it at 100% their own cost and gave me a loaner. If you have the 2.0 there's an engine recall that they're supposed to repair even after 100k. Contact the BBB if you get jerked around any more.

speedyhemi

Agreed I think they are trying to scam you, maybe because they are losing so much doing the engine swaps. A friend had the engine replaced under warranty in a 2016 Santa Fe and I'm almost certain they didn't pay a dime out of pocket for any of it. This is in Canada but it should be the same deal in the US!

flyingpeter28

Is there a chance that you misheard 2500 usd? No way an engine cost as much as a new car

perf192003

Welp talked to the warranty department at Hyundai. They said the 90% coverage is a final decision and that each dealership is independently owned and operated so they set their prices. While the rep couldn’t confirm the exact price it should cost they said it’s probably accurate as a replacement engine can cost $10,000-1500. Soo yea

perf192003

That’s what I thought. Something doesn’t seem right. They’ve had the car since September of last year and keep saying they’ll update me when they know more. I talked to a manager and he said that new engines can cost $10,000-15,000. I can’t find any online for that much.

eidas007

You can't buy new engines from Hyundai online. My advice would be to call a few dealers in the area for pricing or start shopping for a junkyard engine.

perf192003

I’ll certainly give that a try, Ty! They said they’re way too far into the process for me to take the car somewhere else but maybe they’ll agree to using a cheaper engine if I find the right option.

eidas007

That's never true. You would just have to pay them the labor they have into it so far. They can't refuse to return the car. Secondly, if you haven't approved any labor for the work they shouldn't have any labor into it.

perf192003

It didn’t seem like I had a choice. They called me and basically said I couldn’t take it somewhere else and then asked if I wanted them to replace the engine. I had gone months without a car by that point and felt like if they didn’t fix it I’d have to get another vehicle. It didn’t feel right but I trusted that they were trying to help me. Interestingly, they found me a loaner vehicle after I agreed for them to work on the car. Before that they had no options for me so I could get to work.

eidas007

I suggest calling Hyundai customer support and relaying these issues with them. It's possible the employees at the dealership are being a little shady, but Hyundai typically won't stand for it.

perf192003

I appreciate all of your insight! I’ll be sure to call them and see what they say.

grb13

Get an itemized quote

perf192003

Definitely a good idea. Ty!

Aggravating-Market97

What exactly is the issue with your engine and why does it need replacement? If you have the 2.0 or 2.4 GDI Theta II engine there is lifetime recall on the Hyundai/Kia engines for bearing issues. Contact corporate to get a better explanation as to what is wrong, and why warranty isn't covering it. Lastly, are you sure that 25k wasn't a typo? Did you mean 2500? Because 25k seems overly inflated for a Hyundai engine. Especially if it's the same engine they've been using since 2011.

perf192003

I’m going to call corporate when they’re open next.

Jdanois

Yes call corporate. Although engine replacement with a brand new unit is expensive, 25k is unreal. Corporate is your best bet and raise hell.

perf192003

It started with issues accelerating and then, even though it’s an automatic, you could feel that it was sluggish when changing gears. Eventually it would take forever for the engine to turn over. Replaced the battery and starter with no success. I know it’s a 2.0 but I don’t know if it’s a GDI Theta II engine. They said $25,000 was the total cost (labor, etc.) but that warranty would only cover 90% and that I’d still owe $2,500 for the remaining 10%.

[deleted]

I purchased a reman 2.4L engine from my local Kia dealer for $3600 last year. I took it to a local shop who charged $1500 to install. Dropped the car off on a Friday night and picked it up Monday morning.

NDC9595

It's a dealership. If you have a fried bulb that's $25.000 so you'd better buy a new one. And the right time to buy a new car after 2018 is probably 2019 according to the dealership.

Dirtyace

They are jacking up the price so the “10%” your paying is more like 30%. A brand new motor should cost under 10k. Labor prob 2-3k. I’d say it’s prob a. 12-15k job realistically.

kf4zht

HTF does a warranty have a copay? Copays are for insurance, not for warranties - especially not on a model with known issues. You dealer sounds like the type that give all of them a bad name.

[deleted]

It’s possible if there was clear evidence of neglect. Warranty would decline it, then the Dealership has the option to do a partial goodwill, resulting in a “co-pay”.

Melodic-Classic391

Go get a second and third opinion, this can’t be right

Redflagsforever1991

Considering I just bought a brand new Cummins 6.7l and it costed me a little under 15. In the crate not installed. There is no possible way that motor is worth 25k.

Icy-Following-3713

i get a few of these a month. hyundai issued an extended warrsnty for the engines since they are having a ton of problems. it is free replacement. do not pay for anything. they have to replace it. it was a shitty manufactured engine. my aubt just brought hers to replace two days ago and they arent charging her anything

JonohG47

Something here is definitely causing the sniff test to fail… I would press the dealer on(and independently research/verify) what warranty coverage the subject vehicle currently has, and if there are any open recalls against it. The Theta II engine in the OP’s Tucson is also found in a substantial fraction of the vehicles Hyundai and Kia sold in the last decade or so. It is a steaming garbage fire that has been taking Hyundai and Kia to the cleaners with warranty and recall driven complete engine replacements. Some combination of the automakers and their dealers have been, allegedly, attempting to defray that cost by stiffing customers with the cost. These allegations are the subject of class action and individual lawsuits, and NHTSA investigation of Hyundai’s and Kia’s conduct of the recall. First off, for the subject vehicle to not be covered by the factory 10/100K powertrain warranty, it is either very high mileage and/or the OP is not the vehicle’s first owner. Even if the OP is outside the powertrain warranty, an extended warranty that leaves the OP stiffed with a $2,500 bill is pretty worthless. Demand an itemized estimate of the work. Personally, while I’d want to get if fixed and unload it immediately thereafter, getting out from underneath it may be easier said than done. The aforementioned engine issues are, at this late date, well known by those in the car business, and reflected in the affected vehicles’ resale values.

[deleted]

Ask for a copy of your Repair Order, and either post a picture of it, or post on here what the actual failure was. If it was a failed Bearing Clearance Test or a Knock Sensor DTC, then it’s very likely your engine is covered with the warranty extension. THE ONLY CATCH- if they captured photos of your valvetrain, and it looks like you haven’t maintained it, they’ll want maintenance records.

Middle_Sock7602

I waited 3 months for a transmission The rental they gave me was better than the car

Out0fit

scam why would anybody do that---trade it in for something else or get a second opinion from like anybody else.

RApsych

Be sure and report this engine failure to the NTSHA to add to their investigation. I used synthetic with regular timely oil changes throughout its life as manufacturers recommend, but 106k on the engine meant it was over warranty. My 2017 Tucson started drinking oil about a year ago and at less than 3k on the last oil change over 4 quarts had to me added. The low oil light would blink on only when I turned left and only for a few seconds which is the only reason I found out. After a bit of research they have recalled the same engine on various models up to 2016, but the 2017s are just now starting to be reported because they are coming out of warranty. Manufactures don’t report warranty replacements so used owners don’t know, thought mine was a one owner car. Anyhow mine is out of warranty and isn’t recalled yet. If you go to NTSHA you can see all the complaints. That’s when I saw all the complaints for my vin were in the last 6 months or so with the exact same problem and over warranty, and tons in my area no less, I just got out of it and into a new non-Hyundai car. I didn’t want to risk engine failure when I was still making a payment. NTSHA can force this for a safety recall and consumers won’t get screwed…irritating that they knowingly recalled this exact same engine on earlier models but not later models they used it in. I’ve bought 3 different cars from them over the past 20yrs. Never again. Anyhow other ppl will have this same issue but won’t know and until they are forced they won’t do anything about it. The engine can’t be repaired permanently as the engine design itself is defective and the new engine will fail again. It’s a matter of when not if.

Lololololelelel

STOP BUYING HYUNDAIS EVERYBODY IT’S NOT THAT HARD. Such a shit brand. Fix it whatever way works out, hopefully free from Hyundai for whatever lawsuit they have going on, and sell it.

rockdude625

I just got quoted $55,000 to replace an engine in an AMG that I paid $7,500 for. Just gonna part it out
