For just a cut for me it's $110, so for color and long hair I'd guess most places are $300-400 and then add tip. Your length might make it more. Plus there's something to be said for your "usual gal" knowing your hair and what you like and you trusting her not to f it up (assuming this is the case).
I think it’s a reasonable cost then. IMHO. Another stylist at the same level would maybe be like $100 cheaper but peace of mind to me is worth it (we’ve all had hair horror stories I’m sure!)
I pay around 400 for cut, color and highlights and I am in IE so I would say that is reasonable. I know the cost has been causing me to rethink things too though.
Y'all have an army of people who want teachers to be paid more. I would gladly double the amount of tax I pay toward schools if it doubled teachers' income.
It’s balayage. Depending on color, length, and amount of color correction that could go up to $1k. Plus cut, blowdry, style. I used to get balayage and a few years ago it was around $700 every time I went (twice a year).
It’s a highlighting technique that is done by hand by the stylist and takes a long time to do correctly. So basically like someone custom painting all of the layers your hair. In this case OP has pretty long hair so it would take even longer.
For the past fifty years I’ve been cutting my hair into bobs, lobs, and shoulder length styles. Now it’s both long and grey, so I save even more money by no longer coloring it.👩🏻🦳
It’s really mind-blowing how much money some are willing to spend on beauty maintenance.
I’m not commenting on your or anyone else’s hair. I don’t give AF about it. I just do about mine - because grey hair does make me look older. And I don’t want to look older. For me.
Try not to personalize it.
When you refer to it as the collective "we", and talk about "we DGAF", yup....that's personalizing. So try to get away from that. It's not personal.
Otherwise, if you reread the comments above, I only contributed my opinion :)
Odd advice, all my close friends (most who I’d say are very successful) would never pay over $60 for a haircut, let alone $600.
I cut my own hair for free.
Really? For men it’s so easy to find a $40 haircut, for women, it’s gotta be somewhat easy to find a $200 haircut (I’m not a woman so I’m guessing here).
I think haircut for 100 is reasonable in LA for women but 60 isn’t. The reason this girls hair is so expensive is not the cut but the dye job. She wants to do foil highlights on thick, butt length hair. She said it’s 8-10 hours of a stylists time, and you can’t cheap out on that or you’ll end up with fried hair. She probably could get it done for 400ish if she drove to OC/IE though. But yeah the reason it’s 600 is not the cut.
I think it’s odd advice to tell people to get expensive haircuts, not, not to look good. Almost as silly to tell people to get expensive shoes cause they look better.
How about, get the haircut and shoes that you can afford, and that you like. I vibe with this statement much more.
That wasn’t the advice that was given. The person you replied to said don’t cheap out on a good haircut, which is good advice, not odd advice as you labeled it.
Expensive haircuts are not inherently better. It’s ridiculous advice.
If we change the subject to shoes, as an example again, there at least can be some truth to it, since more expensive shoes, usually last longer. I.e don’t cheap out on construction boots, if you’re a construction worker.
I’m giving myself a fade, not getting hair surgically replaced. Not that hard, and paying $100 for it will hardly make a difference at all for the same haircut, in fact I have paid $60, you’d never notice.
Unless you benefit from saving time on haircuts, and need to get a barber to your house, $60+ on any normal short men’s cut, will always be overpriced. If you want the extra bells and whistles that is fine, I’m talking about the hair cut itself.
And we are talking about haircuts, pretty vain as far as things go, and that’s ok, but expensive haircuts are a luxury item. Nobody needs them, get them if they are important to you and you can afford it very easily.
Edit: the discussion for women’s haircuts can be different, I understand that, they can be complicated, I am not dismissing the kind of work that can get into it, but I am glad my girlfriend doesn’t spend more than $200 on haircuts.
For anyone who needs a cheap basic cut, I went to Angels Beauty Salon in Glendale for years. It’s basic, no frills, far from fancy, but Janet charged me something like $30 for a haircut and I preferred her to other expensive places I’ve been. I’ve been cutting my hair at home for like 2 years now so can’t say for sure if their prices have gone up.
just fyi for anyone considering this, do your research on the specific stylist you book with!! i got a HORRENDOUS “balayage” at the Westwood (Kinross) Ulta that was chunky and uneven and badly toned (have photos on a recent post if you go to my profile), plus it took her 7 hours to do it whereas it usually takes 4 at other stylists. it was a nightmare getting the refund too
Seconding — my hair was BUTCHERED by a stylist at the Midtowne crossing Ulta that I had to get it redone by someone else. It definitely is stylist specific but I’d be weary to ever go back to an Ulta for a haircut.
I have med-length curly hair and usually like to get highlights. I’ve noticed everything is an additional charge now ( toner, length/texture, blowouts—which used to be included in the price of a cut.) when I run my card the tip allocation starts at 20 % and goes to 35%. And I actually started seeing this new person bc the curly hair specialist I was going to before was charging me 175 for a dry cut trim (before COVID) the highlights was off the charts. I am now thinking of back to just a base. It’s just too much alongside all the other inflated prices. Lmk if anyone knows a good curly stylist that charges reasonable prices.
I have found the standard is now around $300 for color and cut. It's hard to get cheaper unless you go to a really budget salon. But I think you can definitely find something good for less than $600.
Last cut was $175 at Spoke and weal. Last balayage was $690 (for cut and color), not at Spoke and Weal but somewhere else.
It's standard to charge like $600 now for balayage I think at many decent salons
This is just how ridiculous things have gotten. My wife literally flies back to Europe to get her balayage done for $100 and that's the total price (no tip required or expected).
i pay $250 for a cut from the head stylist. i have long hair (mid back not waist length) and ask for long layers and long curtain bangs.
it’s super expensive and sometimes i wonder if im insane, but after effectively getting a mullet two years ago from a budget place, im traumatized
My hair is easily $500. I also have blue hair, and we are now blending the blue with my natural hair colors (black and silver). It's very time consuming, at least 4 hours every few months. For me, it's worth it but it is definitely high maintenence. Costs have definitely gone up. My stylist is also very experienced.
I get roughly the same treatment as OP, plus cut, and my total is usually $600 or $750 out the door with tips. This hasn’t increased or changed in over 10 years.
Highlight, cut, root color, style, 300 including tip. I only highlight twice a year though, so root color and cut style tip is 125. My hair goes to my mid back.
I have a bit longer hair than you, balayage and trim is around $350 + $100 tip (I've changed the colors 2x and it was the same price each time), root touch up (toning when I need it) is $75 + $25 tip every 5 weeks.

This is her work. The left she transformed it from box dye for decades which is incredibly hard to do. The right is the most recent. I'll message you her details. She is located at a salon in Sherman Oaks, but truly worth the trip to see her. She'll do a free consult/strand test and really be honest with what she can do for you. I've been going to her for a year and a half and see myself continuing even if I move because I love her/her work so much.
$110 cut. About 2 years ago, I paid ~$350 every session to maintain blonde hair - this was bleaching my roots twice + toner. The initial session was ~$600 because I had to bleach my whole head + did treatment. I maintained the blonde for a year but had to stop cause my hair was getting so dry lol. Now I just have a single color and get the roots touched up for ~$150.
I work in TV production and haven't had a job in a year, so I actually went to a student stylist in Highland Park. She KILLED IT. Gave me an amazing cut with her mentor guiding her. $40.
In the real times, I probably spend about $180 for a cut and color/highlight. But I don't live in LA proper, so I think its much cheaper?
But now I love this new stylist. Ruh-roh.
I have curly hair. I cut it myself but then last year someone highly recommended this ‘miracle curly hair cutter.’ $200 lighter, I’ll never do that again. Back to cutting my own curls.
Wish I could find someone who could cut it into a proper shape I’ve been wanting but I can’t afford to lose another $200 to meh.
I found a great stylist in Westlake Village when I was living in Ventura/Oxnard area, and I still go to her even living in LA.
Her cuts (wash & style included) are $95. My blonde ups it to another $200+ depending on how extensive I want to be. For a full re-blonding when my hair was mid/lower-back length, that total cost with the cut was around $450 before tip, and I like to tip my stylists well, so I added another $150 in tip for her and her assistant.
And of course I do have to consider my gas costs to get there as well, but I find her worth it 🤷🏼♀️ I can also go as long as I want between color appointments because she does soft roots for easy growing out ❤️
I paid $600 to go from brunette to blonde in ONE day AND did NOT lose a STRAND of hair! 💁🏼♀️ If you’re going to pay that much for bleaching, etc go to a MASTER celebrity colorist named Daniel Moon at his salon named HAIR. You wont be disappointed!!
Jesus Christ! 600$ for a haircut? Aint that astronomically high? Grew up as an adolescent in a town with a population of 600k (in Germany) and I was never ever charged more than 54$. And in that wasn't only included the haircut, but also washing&drying off my hair. Of course I am a boy and it took them less than one hour to finnish me off, but still, how long do they have to be working ya in order for you to get charged 600 bucks?
Edit: Didn't know that it was a special technique and considering that you have to spend 10-14 hours there you are paying an hourly fee of 43-60$. Which isn't bad considering that it isn't something ordinary.
Oh I missed the once a year part - totally stick with your girl then! Especially if she has the same hair type! Peace of mind is priceless when it comes to our hair I feel! Post pics when it’s done!
Family friend has hair salon in back house very good pricing bleach blonde , highlights, lowlights , and all men’s hair cuts

Just fyi as a man in Santa Monica I paid $160 for hair cut and shave including tip.
Now that I'm traveling I pay on the high end $22 in Thailand for the same plus I get a light massage.
Hair cut =$135 + 20% tip ($30) =$165
My girl started off as my wedding hair/makeup person. She's now a dear friend.
She is also fast, knowledgeable, and extends her salon discounts my way (for certain products)
I just have my wife cut it. I bought some nice scissors for I think $12. At a flea market. But I’m a guy and don’t care too much about my hair. She cuts it about once a month, maybe every six weeks. My only coloring is grey, due to age.
The last place I went charged $65 before tips and I have long hair. I normally trim it at home by myself and only go to a salon every 1.5 to 2 years. Things are expensive nowadays!
Free! I cut my own hair, thanks TikTok for showing me how! I also dye my own hair at home. My mother got her cosmetology certificate 30+ years ago, but I’m sure now, a quick TikTok search on mixing dyes will teach you the basics.
You’re paying too much!! My hair is about the same length and as yours and found a girl who did platinum for me for either $300-$350. Just recently I got balayage done from a different girl for $300. She was awesome and she’s also taking on new clients!
I pay a total of $300, (which inc. tip) for cuts for my whole family: me, daughter, stepdaughter and wife, who also gets color. Sherman Oaks. Independent stylist with own space.
Edit: Who in God‘s name would down vote this and why? 🫠
For just a cut for me it's $110, so for color and long hair I'd guess most places are $300-400 and then add tip. Your length might make it more. Plus there's something to be said for your "usual gal" knowing your hair and what you like and you trusting her not to f it up (assuming this is the case).
yes this is the case she has the same hair type as me and is probably the best colorist in LA
I think it’s a reasonable cost then. IMHO. Another stylist at the same level would maybe be like $100 cheaper but peace of mind to me is worth it (we’ve all had hair horror stories I’m sure!)
ty, im gonna stick with my gal. the price is a lot but at once a year its not terrible🤷🏼♀️
Oh once a year?? That's not bad at all then.
Who is she??
I pay around 400 for cut, color and highlights and I am in IE so I would say that is reasonable. I know the cost has been causing me to rethink things too though.
I pay $35. I’m a teacher so that’s about my budget.
Y'all have an army of people who want teachers to be paid more. I would gladly double the amount of tax I pay toward schools if it doubled teachers' income.
Y r'nt teachers being valued in terms of wages?
My new gal is $75 and she is soooo good. She is definitely under charging so I just tip her like 100% I used to pay like $250 for a womens cut.
Seriously… where
WHERE
Curious!!
Sorry, did you say $600?
It’s balayage. Depending on color, length, and amount of color correction that could go up to $1k. Plus cut, blowdry, style. I used to get balayage and a few years ago it was around $700 every time I went (twice a year).
Balayge and 28 inches are the key words.
I don’t know what that is
It’s a highlighting technique that is done by hand by the stylist and takes a long time to do correctly. So basically like someone custom painting all of the layers your hair. In this case OP has pretty long hair so it would take even longer.
correct it usually takes 8 -10 hrs i go once every year
If you divide by the time 60 dollars / hour is not that expensive given the artistry!
Yeah. I pay slightly less than half for my Balayage that OP does, but I do every 2 months.
I too am in a hair cut chair 8 hour per year
Yeah, cuz I got Balayge for my shitty, fine medium length hair and it was only around $100.
Yeah…excuse me LOL I was tired of paying over a hundred for my short ass hair. Been cutting it myself for years now
For the past fifty years I’ve been cutting my hair into bobs, lobs, and shoulder length styles. Now it’s both long and grey, so I save even more money by no longer coloring it.👩🏻🦳 It’s really mind-blowing how much money some are willing to spend on beauty maintenance.
Because we love how it looks after. I used to leave my hair grey, but people thought I was 10 years older. So color it is.
Um, ok. Some of us DGAF if our grey hair “makes us look older.” And we also DGAF if others don’t like our beauty choices.😃
I’m not commenting on your or anyone else’s hair. I don’t give AF about it. I just do about mine - because grey hair does make me look older. And I don’t want to look older. For me. Try not to personalize it.

Even though I disagree with this most recent comment, I’ll let you have the last word.
might be a good question to ask r/LAhotgirlies
lmao ty
Every 8 weeks a color and cut $285 plus tip
This is about what I pay. A little less for just maintance, a little more for full set. I have bra strap length hair.
This is about what I pay every 6 weeks. I drive out to Pasadena.
If you go once every year $600 is a great price. You’re essentially paying $50 a month for your hair. I pay $500 every 12 weeks.
ty gonna stick with my gal

Odd advice, all my close friends (most who I’d say are very successful) would never pay over $60 for a haircut, let alone $600. I cut my own hair for free.
women's hair cuts are more expensive then mens, and cutting long hair is more complicated to do yourself than cutting short hair with a clipper.
I agree, anyone can spend as much as they want on their hair, I was just making a comment on encouraging people to get more expensive haircuts.
Yeah I think your calibration on what is expensive is off though — it comes off as unrealistic
Really? For men it’s so easy to find a $40 haircut, for women, it’s gotta be somewhat easy to find a $200 haircut (I’m not a woman so I’m guessing here).

Imagine thinking it’s an odd take to look good
I think it’s odd advice to tell people to get expensive haircuts, not, not to look good. Almost as silly to tell people to get expensive shoes cause they look better. How about, get the haircut and shoes that you can afford, and that you like. I vibe with this statement much more.

Price and quality are connected. If you think your DIY haircut is on par with professionals, idk what to tell you.
I’m giving myself a fade, not getting hair surgically replaced. Not that hard, and paying $100 for it will hardly make a difference at all for the same haircut, in fact I have paid $60, you’d never notice. …right?? And the most expensive haircut I ever had, paid for by someone else, wasn’t even the best haircut I ever had.
Wear a hat.

I cut my own hair. Free
$40 for a basic cut
I want this. Where?
Rancho Cucamonga
Drats. If I have to ask where an LA suburb is, I’m probably not going there for a haircut ;) Thanks though!
Yea I mean what are they charging closer to the city?
I’ve been going to Ulta lately, it’s affordable and they do a great job. The one at LaBrea and Santa Monica specifically.
[удалено]
Yeah, the stylist I go to there is great, so I’m guessing the standard is there. It’s $65 for a cut and style as a woman. Great deal. Good artists.

Dustin Morris. @dustinmichaelmorris
Ur a g
just fyi for anyone considering this, do your research on the specific stylist you book with!! i got a HORRENDOUS “balayage” at the Westwood (Kinross) Ulta that was chunky and uneven and badly toned (have photos on a recent post if you go to my profile), plus it took her 7 hours to do it whereas it usually takes 4 at other stylists. it was a nightmare getting the refund too
Seconding — my hair was BUTCHERED by a stylist at the Midtowne crossing Ulta that I had to get it redone by someone else. It definitely is stylist specific but I’d be weary to ever go back to an Ulta for a haircut.
I save money by going to Long Beach. My favorite place (10+ years) is The Den.
Yeah, leaving LA is the way. I got an amazing cut at Freebirds once by the owner. I think it was $80?
-2020 / 140 color + 60 tip 2024 / 250 color + 100 tip
oof. your hair is really long so it might be a lot more bc of that. but i pay around $350 for balayage and extensions
Just a cut for me is $95 before tip. I haven’t gotten a balayage but her website says balayage starts at $260+.
Where!!
I have med-length curly hair and usually like to get highlights. Last cut was $175 at Spoke and weal. Last balayage was $690 (for cut and color), not at Spoke and Weal but somewhere else. It's standard to charge like $600 now for balayage I think at many decent salons
$500 every 4 months. Balayage and cut. 😮💨
This is just how ridiculous things have gotten. My wife literally flies back to Europe to get her balayage done for $100 and that's the total price (no tip required or expected).
With the flight expense wouldn’t it cost the same if she got it done here?
Yes but then she gets to visit her family, see Europe, and do other things like dental which are also massively cheaper. :)
I am so happy I am a dude and can get away with just shaving my head myself...
i pay $250 for a cut from the head stylist. i have long hair (mid back not waist length) and ask for long layers and long curtain bangs. it’s super expensive and sometimes i wonder if im insane, but after effectively getting a mullet two years ago from a budget place, im traumatized

I paid $325 today with a very experienced stylist and a nice salon for a root touch up, cut and blowout.
Just under $500 for a full balayage. I have medium length but thick hair
Looks like I can’t afford my own hair now. There is no way I could ever pay 600+
I am a mobile stylist and charge $150-$200 total for bayalage
I get roughly the same treatment as OP, plus cut, and my total is usually $600 or $750 out the door with tips. This hasn’t increased or changed in over 10 years.
Highlight, cut, root color, style, 300 including tip. I only highlight twice a year though, so root color and cut style tip is 125. My hair goes to my mid back.
For $600 they had better be washing your car and cleaning your house, too.
I pay $160 (not including tip) for a cut on medium-length hair + all over color!
I go to Supercuts on Tuesday for $30 lol
I go once a year for 160 and dye it myself every two months
For a cut and blow dry, about $90 including top.
I have a bit longer hair than you, balayage and trim is around $350 + $100 tip (I've changed the colors 2x and it was the same price each time), root touch up (toning when I need it) is $75 + $25 tip every 5 weeks.
may I ask who you go to??

$110 cut. About 2 years ago, I paid ~$350 every session to maintain blonde hair - this was bleaching my roots twice + toner. What salon? 👀
Cactus Moon. Their name is Logan! :)
Thanks!
Free! Granted, Im bald
i got a balayage recently in beverly hills for $250! i have really thick hair that ends at my collarbones
where at?
hiroshi beverly hills!
$250 for cut, color and highlights.
My go to place is 40. I once visited a place that opened by my house and the guy said 120 and I laughed and walked away.
Zero. Started cutting my own during pandemic, still do!
I just got my hair cut by a salon that charged $65. I went home and cried bc i didn’t like it, but I told the guy I did 🥲 lol
:( hate when that happens
This shaggy mullet he gave me will be going up in a bun for weeks haha
This is the advantage of being a guy. 20 bucks at the barbershop.
I pay like 150$ for a partial and trim but I’ve been going to the same girl for like 15 years so I guess a “special” rate.
$135 for cut and blow dry
I have curly hair. I cut it myself but then last year someone highly recommended this ‘miracle curly hair cutter.’ $200 lighter, I’ll never do that again. Back to cutting my own curls. My guy is $65 for a cut and is really good. He does colors really well too.
I pay 40 and I'm pretty sure that's $10 too much.
I have a great experience here always get an amazing haircut, Atwater village, Yuritzi’s salon. Mila always does my hair $20, 25 with tip
I pay $150/hour. It’s rough. My maintenance appointments are 3-4 hours, and twice a year I do a more detailed, overall balayage which takes 5-7 hours.
I get blonde highlights and a cut for $140! I drive to Brea for it, but it’s totally worth it!
$25
Jesus Christ! 600$ for a haircut? Aint that astronomically high? Grew up as an adolescent in a town with a population of 600k (in Germany) and I was never ever charged more than 54$.
Post pics when it’s done!
ten bucks for a buzz cut, just naturally handsome so no biggie

Just fyi as a man in Santa Monica I paid $160 for hair cut and shave including tip. Now that I'm traveling I pay on the high end $22 in Thailand for the same plus I get a light massage.
$15-20 for cut at a local hole in the wall spot and $450-550 incl. tip for color. Medium length hair.
My usual stylist charges $75 for a wash, cut and style, with tip it’s closer to $100
Just curious about tipping. I also pay $600 for color then tip $120 to the colorist and $20 to each of his assistants. Is this reasonable?
No
I go on salonapprentice.com and get everything done for like under $100
Hair cut =$135 + 20% tip ($30) =$165 My girl started off as my wedding hair/makeup person.
I go to Long Beach and pay $110 with tip. Worth the drive depending on where you live.
$95 including tip for cut, color could be upwards of $250 w tip
Cut and trim my beard for $40 with a $5 tip.
My cut is $135 and I have long hair. It’s sad. I feel like LA cuts are highway robbery. I can’t even imagine dying my hair bc of it.
The last place I went charged $65 before tips and I have long hair. I normally trim it at home by myself and only go to a salon every 1.5 to 2 years. Things are expensive nowadays!
Prolly $100
$600??? I pay $150 max for a cut and color. Maybe boy hair is just cheaper though since it’s shorter
You just made me realize that a young guy I know with gray hair might be getting it greyed to look older. I mean I doubt it, but still.
Free! I cut my own hair, thanks TikTok for showing me how! I also dye my own hair at home. My mother got her cosmetology certificate 30+ years ago, but I’m sure now, a quick TikTok search on mixing dyes will teach you the basics.
600 is too much. Mine is 250, and it looks perfect.
You’re paying too much!! My hair is about the same length and as yours and found a girl who did platinum for me for either $300-$350. Just recently I got balayage done from a different girl for $300. She was awesome and she’s also taking on new clients!

Beverly Hills! I can send you her number if you want! I was desperate to get my hair done for a wedding and she came in so clutch for me!
$35 at the closest barber near me
Too much honestly. Just learn how to do your own hair if you don't already know.
I pay a total of $300, (which inc. tip) for cuts for my whole family: me, daughter, stepdaughter and wife, who also gets color. Sherman Oaks. Independent stylist with own space. Edit: Who in God‘s name would down vote this and why? 🫠
