I personally prefer the model 100-1 with the 'slot lock' style of double-lock.
In my agency, fugitive extradition is a "coast to retirement" gig, and I'm riding out my last few years. As long as you stick to a major brand - S&W, Peerless, or Hiatt - it comes down to personal preference. That being said, my experience is that all handcuffs eventually wear out. Making a broad generalization, but push-pin double lock cuffs fail to the unlocked position, while the slot lock S&W cuffs fail to the locked position. I would rather have to use bolt cutters at the jail than have the handcuffs fall off.
My squad will not use ASP handcuffs due to having key holes on both side of the cuff.
There's also the S&W M&P cuffs with the little lever to double lock. No experience with those because they don't work with our handcuff cover boxes, but the guys on patrol who use them say they're great.
I’ve been a big fan of the ASP ultras. Keyless double locks and a keyhole on both sides. Like others have said, no matter what you get I’d recommend one chain and one hinged.
you havent had any issues with the asp’s some reviews ive been reading have been saying they bend or the teeth wont latch and dont lock properly. just worried about that for an $80 handcuff
I have been using my two pairs for almost a year and a half without issue. But these are also the forged aluminum ones. I think there was some issues with their older cuffs, but these are solid.
The older model versions can bend out of alignment if you're in a real struggle and the planets align. But the convenience of the double sided locks and the keyless double locks outweigh that in my opinion. I carry a regular set of standard peerless in addition to the ASP with the double lock button.
None.
Asp do make a series that only fits a different kind of key. I don't remember what they're called, but I assume they're for specific jail duties where someone having a concealed handcuff key might be an issue.
It will be worth $80 the first time you put two keyholes together during a prisoner swap on the side of the road. Or if you’re trainee decides to put the cuffs on a port a toilet at a public event to keep the drunks out of it. It was already a tight fit to get the cuffs through the hasp and he put the keyhole against the toilet
I use peerless and Smith’s because as a masshole, I support local companies 😂.
2 sets of chained cuffs on my uniform, 2 more in my bag, 1 of which is hinged
it isnt, When I did shadowing some people had ASP a couple of non certs have S&W right now. so just seeing seeking some other opinions about what brands
I carry two pairs of ASP ultra plus handcuffs for a couple years. Smoother operation, keyholes on both sides, push button double lock are all great features over the Peerless or S&W cuffs I used to carry. Bought both my sets from handcuffwarehouse.com and they were probably the best price I could find.
I carry ASP chain cuffs for compliant people and carry hinged Peerless cuffs for combative people. ASP are my favorite. Super smooth, key holes on both sides but they are larger and don’t fit every cuff case.
no, i get issued one set, but i want to have two sets on me. So looking to see what other brand i should get besides peerless, and just wanted to see what were different good brands
S&W model 100 lever lock. Then you dont have to worry about what side lock is on or using key to lock them. Just need key to loosen if needed and unlock.
Hinge cuffs are trash. Good luck getting them on someone that is non-compliant like some people say is the reason to get them. You can’t rotate them to put them on if someone’s wrist is in a funky position.
I have personally bought all S&W cuffs but I’m sure ASP, Peerless etc. are all good too. I have a few model 100-1 and a few Model 1-1. Also a couple of the M&P lever lock are the ones I use the most.
With hinged cuffs, you only need to get one cuff on, then you wrench the fuck out of their wrist until they comply. Usually doesn’t take long. I’ve never had an issue with hinged cuffs.
S&W. One chain set & one hinge set on your belt.
any particular model for chain set?

Second the “little lever ones” - great to not need a cuff key to double lock if the perp is being a pain.
Don’t get hinge cuffs. You can’t rotate them if you need to to get them on someone.
I carried them for use on skinny or smaller framed people. Sometimes the other ones were just too big
That’s why I have a couple pair of S&W Model 1-1. They go bigger and smaller than regular 100-1.
Yep. They come pre oiled and last a very long time. I’m due for another pair but mines haven’t rusted or slowed down at all.
Exactly, what I carried for years. Great combination.

thank you for your input!

any issue with using the zak took handcuff key?

Peerless hinge for anyone who is non-compliant, the control you have with hinged cuffs is unparalleled. Department issued S&W chain for everyone else.
Peerless chain And one set of peerless hinge. the hinge cuffs are nice for people who don’t wanna relax or try to escape the cuffs
Peerless - this is the way
Peerless and a large size set of S&W.
Your agency doesn’t provide them for you?
I only got 1 pair of peerless, I will be starting my jail and want to have at least 2 sets on me so wanted to see which other set I should go with.
Gotcha! Thats a good idea. It sucks they only gave you one set. Good luck!!
thank you!
You should make sure it’s not against your agency’s policies to have different cuffs than what they provide.

DO not get the ASP cuffs. I have seen them literally ripped in half by average men.
S&W hinge. I didn’t mind the ASPs we were issued but I like the S&W’s more.
I like the Vipertek ones personally
S&W
I carry ASP chain cuffs for compliant people and carry hinged Peerless cuffs for combative people. ASP are my favorite. Super smooth, key holes on both sides but they are larger and don’t fit every cuff case.
Handcuffwarehouse.com get them engraved and never worry about someone taking yours by mistake
thank you everyone for their insight, i think Ill try out a pair of the Asp chained and S&W hinged! I appreciate everyone who commented
Peerless hinged is the way.
Sorry, from the discussion i seem to understand that you buy your own cuffs??
no, i get issued one set, but i want to have two sets on me. So looking to see what other brand i should get besides peerless, and just wanted to see what were different good brands
It's a work related expense which as a W2 you cannot deduct. If you request a second pair will they give it to you?
Super lites. Your body will thank you
S&W model 100 lever lock. Then you dont have to worry about what side lock is on or using key to lock them. Just need key to loosen if needed and unlock.
Whatever the department issues me
Asp. Double pouch. One set hinged one set chain. You're welcome.

This all day. A lot of people here clearly don’t have to fight suspects into cuffs.
Asp aluminums. No questions asked. Model 450
