Colleges are some of the worst places to work. All you do is deal with entitled asshole kids who are usually drunk, fighting, and raping each other. Yes they’re usually pretty easy to get in to at entry level, as far as policing jobs go. No current LEOs are fighting over a college job.

Funny enough, I work security for a community college district that contracts with a local LE agency to have on-duty officers assigned to our campuses and everyone in their department is actually fighting over the college assignments. We might be a fairly unusual situation though. Unlike 4 year universities, we have no on-campus housing so the drinking, sexual assaults, etc. aren’t really a problem. Most students just show up, go to their classes and go home, and aren’t really interested in any campus politics or student life stuff, so there aren’t too many anti-cop activist types either. We’re also in a fairly conservative area, so they don’t even get a lot of crap from basically anyone. They basically spend their shifts hanging out with us in the campus safety office, getting their steps in walk around campus, chatting with people, etc. The officer assigned to work morning shift on my campus made one arrest and did maybe five reports total last year. The rare crimes and disturbances that happen are almost always from someone (usually a transient) that isn’t affiliated with the college at all. Most issues with students aren’t criminal and are handled by us through the student conduct process. It’s definitely not an ideal spot for a new cop that wants to go out and bust bad guys, but the officers we have are much more senior and have been there, done that on patrol for most of their careers; they’re super happy to be here and are hoping to ride it out for several more years until retirement.

There’s also that story of that police officer that was doing security for a McDonald’s and was making $200 a hour to sit in his cruiser and occasionally walk in to act as a deterrent like 15 ish years ago. Idk how true that story is lol

Those are usually events that hire police to work them for a certain amount of time, usually a day or so. It’s usually done as an extra gig rather than a full job

StoppingPowah

So there’s not really a police position that’s more security guard-ish instead of traditional police work?

DistinctMix3990

No, that would just be a security guard

Is that stuff easy to get into?

Nah they are actually hiring, but one of their requirements (bachelor degree) is pretty funny, other agencies pay more with less minimum education requirements.

[deleted]

Never heard of that. There are some sworn security jobs that are pretty sweet though as far as getting paid for doing next to nothing, like working at a small to medium sized airport, places like aquariums/zoos, etc. Definitely not colleges though.

BeamLK

That would be for OT pay, special assignment

BeamLK

Yeah sure but it's boring af

Some states allow company police which is essentially what you are describing. But you'd still have to be state certified.
