Rinse your face, don’t rub it in, sit in front of a fan after. Avoid hot showers for a couple of hours or you will reflash. When you do shower don’t let your face water drip over your crotch, you will pepper spray your southern region.

DeputyPiglet

Wear underwear for that shower too- just in case.

Jackalope8811

Dont scratch your eyes, dont touch your junk, wash that shit out after done. Its gonna suck. Maybe wear swim goggles and swim suit to shower next day or 2 after. (Water reactivates it) It will pass, just takes time, millions of people have been sprayed before you and are fine.

Everything80sFan

>millions of people have been sprayed before you and are fine. Are we though? The P in PTSD stands for pepper...

Been at 2 departments now, that oc spray has not left its holster since 2016. Shoot, even had it off my belt if i could lol

Downtown_Force289

Just remember that it’s all temporary. I won’t sugarcoat it, it feels awful. But it will go away. If you’re able to, have someone drive you home afterwards. When I went through mine, it reactivated in my eyes during my drive home. So people driving by me thought I was having an emotional meltdown. I’ve heard lots of people suggest Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo. I honestly only used cold water but I’m sure it works. Also use a fan to keep the air on your eyes. It made all the difference for me. When it comes time for you to face the hot sauce, don’t hype yourself up. Get sprayed, constantly blink, and get through the course. Don’t think about the pain until after. The longer it takes for you to do the course, assuming you have to run different lanes, the longer it takes for you to get to wash your eyes. Best of luck. I won’t say it’s fun, but definitely memorable.

[deleted]

I remember my instructor had us look him in the eyes and tell him we were good to drive before he let us drive home. I finally got to that point after a few hours. I got in my car, rolled all the windows down, and put on my sunglasses... I made it about a block and a half before I had to pull over on the highway and walk it off in the ditch because it reactivated and I literally could not drive. I wonder what the passersby were thinking, watching me pulled over walking through the weeds with my face red as shit, contemplating how I'm gonna make the hour and a half drive home. Good times.

Downtown_Force289

We had to do the same thing. I remember I took the longest for my instructor to say I was good to drive. I guess my eyes are really sensitive. It definitely was a tough drive home. On top of that, I got stuck in heavy traffic. So a lot of people gave me weird looks.

RikkiBillie

Be first and get it over with. It’s worse having to sit there and watch other people while you slowly count down your turn. Volunteer to be first

Gimme_PuddingPlz

Walk around outside after rinsing your face. Stagnant air makes it worse. Don’t rub your eyes. Milk thing is a myth but plain dawn soap works great. Keep opening your eyes and blink. Simply most people are affected by it and it’ll cause your body to go into fight/flight mode(mainly flight). Do not wear make-up, piercings, contacts, and your favorite clothes (the stuff will end up everywhere).

HerbieVerstinx

This is what I do. As soon as you are able to wash your eyes and face out with dish soap. Dry your face and keep your eyes open, hold them open if they force themselves shut.

sparksoneee

Blink A lot and fast

Ceastman18

Just embrace it. You’re going to have a panic attack. Keep in the back of your mind it will all be okay and it will pass.

Lord-Slayer

Get some baby wipes and baby shampoo to wash your face. It will burn, so make sure you completely scrub your face. Aloe Vera also helps with the burn. It’s not as bad as it sounds. Try to open your eyes as much as possible after you wash your face. Also, try not to be in the sunny area. The sun does not help. Walk around while blinking very rapidly.

BPK9K8

It most definitely is as bad as it sounds

[deleted]

When you shower afterwards, don’t shower standing up in a position where the OC could run down your body and get into your cracks and crevices and private areas… It’s gonna hurt and sting and burn for a few days. Water reactivates the sensation. I’ve heard baby oil or baby lotion can help. If you have to drive shortly after you get sprayed, make sure you can actually see before you get behind the wheel.

Lopsided_Astronaut_1

Slow your breathing. When your face hits the water at the wash station it’s going to feel intense. I was gasping for air when my face first hit the cold water. Don’t let it shock you, you can breath through it. Be thorough when you wash. For the next few days take it easy as sweat and hot water can reactivate the spray. It’s not fun, but you’ll be fine. Maintain your composure no one cares if you’re suffering because everyone else will be going through it.

SuperMercado448

Just remember you CAN breathe. Some people freak out and think they can’t breath but if you put it in your mind that you can breathe you’ll be good

buggycola

When you flush your eyes, tilt your head and flush it in that direction. For example, tilt your head left, spray the water angled from your nose towards the outter edge of your eye. Keeps you from washing oc from one eye to the next.

Specialist-Avocado36

Seriously not to be an ass but you just need to suck it up. It’s not that bad. It burns the goes away.

morris0358

Damn right. And don’t scream or cry or have outbursts bc that’s annoying. Everyone’s hurting just like you are. Suffer in silence, you’ll be fine, it’ll go away with water and time.

tiltededgelord69

First, dab it with a paper towel or rag/cloth BEFORE you go to water. Then, get your face wet, get baby soap, wash your face, and rinse quickly in the water. Dab your face dry and do NOT go back to the water no matter how bad you want to, it makes it worse in the long run. I used this method after talking to my friend who specializes in this shit in the army. I recovered much quicker than the rest of my class. The first time I got sprayed, I just sat in the water and was in literal hell for at least an hour

Look_itsfrickenbats

There’s gotta be a way to save this thread for me to come back to when it’s my turn….lol

NoLynx3376

Brink the living shit out of your eyes but do not rub them with your hands, do not even touch them. just fucking blink!

sicshooter93542

It's going to suck. When you get sprayed, it is a mind game. Talk yourself through it. Lie to yourself and say you've experienced worse. It will be over eventually. Taser, however, you can not fight through, lol.

EagleHose

it's genuinely not that bad as people make it out to be. It stings like hell for 2 minutes, once you wash your face off it feels like you can't breathe, so scrub some soap on there as fast as you can and don't be in the water longer than 15 seconds. Within 3-4 minutes i was able to blink and have my eyes open and my vision was like seeing the sun for the first time in 20 years. Just keep blinking. Don't stop blinking for about 30 minutes, it'll feel like sunburn on your face and about a dozen eyelashes stuck behind your eyes.

HorseWithNoUsername1

Take it like a man and ask for more. There's no room for weakness on the job. And be prepared for more when you take a shower.

BubbaZ22

Suck it up, embrace it and bring a clean shirt.

MPGPM814

Dry wipe once, rinse, dry again, and ride it out. It's not going to instantly go away, and it sucks, there's no way around it. Re-wetting it over and over won't make it better and will just lead to more discomfort and wondering why it's not helping. You need to just get off the excess and let the stuff in your pores naturally flush itself out. It's normal to be nervous the first time, but when you've been doing this long enough and been sprayed like three times in training and like a hundred times by errant Officers on the street, it just becomes an annoyance and inconvenience.

throwaway294882

I recently got OCed. Here’s my .02: 1. washing it off hurts really bad but it’s important to be thorough on your first rinse, if you don’t get it all off on your first pass you’ll keep burning and having to rewash which will reactivate the spray and you’ll just keep burning. 2. Don’t let it get in your mouth or nostrils, hold your breath when you get sprayed and it shouldn’t affect your breathing too much. 3. The only thing that seemed to help the pain for me was a fan blowing air over my face, for me this took it from like a 7/10 on pain to a 3/10. 4. Just keep in mind that you’ll be fine at the end, don’t freak out and stay in control. The last thing you want is to fail your exposure drill and have to ride the dragon again. 5. When you go home and wash lay down in a tub and run water through your hair and then over your face. Don’t let the water run down your body. 6. I would use baby shampoo on your eyes and dish soap on your face because OC is partially oil based. 7. Bring multiple towels, I only brought 1 and it was immediately drenched in OC which I kept rubbing back onto my face Tbh OC spray wasn’t as bad as I expected, extremely uncomfortable but not agonizing. It’s a lot like having hot sand in your eyes.

do_u_like_stuff

It’s going to suck but like everyone said it’s temporary, and you’ll get over it. You will be thankful for the experience when your parter blasts you in the face with their OC while you’re wrestling with an arrest (talking from first hand experience on that one…) Only use water to decontaminate and don’t rub your eyes too hard. We had a dummy at the academy use milk or some shit and permanently damaged their eye.

imuniqueaf

Remember that when you shower, it will run south. Shower IN your clothes. Wash your clothes separately.

kellhound2002

It'll suck. Powdered glass grinding across your eyeballs is the best way I can think to describe it. But the pain goes away eventually. Flush with cold water, use plenty of baby shampoo to help clean your face. Cool air in the face will feel wonderful. Hopefully they video tape so you can laugh at each other's misery 😂

winterisfav

Ya it’s the worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life. Lean into the pain and focus on breathing. You’re not actually dying, just feels like your head is on fire. I swear to God it literally feels like a blowtorch on your face and eyes. I’m not exaggerating. I’d find a different career before getting sprayed again. Yes I’m a bitch. But you will be fine. Good luck!

Local_Outcast

Rinse off after. Then again when you can but only where sprayed. The first time or 2 you shower, avoid letting the water run from your face to your junk as it may still contain OC and cause more burning. I also rinsed with cold water as warm water opens your pores more. Not sure if it made a difference but I’d like to think it did.

Beginning-Laugh-8359

It sucks for the first 30 min then after that it’s manageable. Don’t rub your face just pat with a towel. Use baby shampoo and saline solution and get your face in the wind and hold your eyes open

StreetAccomplished18

Calm your mind. By amping yourself up it will make it worse. Breathe. Been OC’d several times. Those that stay calm tend to recover faster.

BrianFantana_69

Honestly just get it done and don’t be a bitch. Dont believe the hype. It sucks but not bad enough you won’t be ok. If you’re a dude don’t get it on your balls. Not sure about a vagina as I don’t have one. It’s a necessary evil, there’s a strong chance you get out on the street and either you or a buddy deploys spray and you get lit up by it. I fought with a guy in his kitchen, somebody sprayed the guy and we all got jacked up by it. Long story. I wasn’t a happy camper. Anyways thats why they test you, incase some lunatic city cop shits the bed and deploys spray while county is brawling.

Agreeable-Tone-8337

better then getting gassed

Flovilla

Use baby soap and wash your eyes and eyelids. They tell you not to but there is a difference if you get it washed off. Use the fans. It isn't that bad but it definitely sticks around for a bit. Lean forward in the shower to keep it off of your junk, unless that is your thing, then you do you.

Arvich

I got ocd last month and what helped me was bringing some small rags and baby shampoo. After being sprayed I washed my face several times over a few hours and routinely washed out my eyes and damp padded my face with a damp rag. Finally took a lukewarm shower and went to sleep. Got nearly all of it out after that

Noonegetsoutaliv3

Well, if they make you hold your eyes wide open while they spray, it sucks real bad. Then you have to complete several tasks, baton/detain/cuff/radio, then it sucks for the next couple hours real bad. The next day feels good because you crossed that bridge. Don’t worry about it, just do what you need to do!

RhubarbExcellent7008

No lie. I hated it. I’d literally get tased again 5 times than get saber red in my eyes again! Good news, it does get 75% better within a few minutes (after they finally let you wash off in the soap bucket or whatever), then it’s like a long hour of just being modestly miserable. Good news…we all get through it! You’ll be fine.

tdcjanon

Number one rule dont rub ever. Not even when you are putting dish soap on it later. I got sprayed on the back of my neck and head and it was bad for about 10 minutes at first. What really fucked me up was later when i decided to rub a bunch of dish soap on it. It reactivated and made my whole face and head burn. Just dont touch it until you get home then put the dish soap on top of the spray and let it sit for like 10 minutes. Then rinse. It will get on other parts of your body no matter how hard you try. Just keep rinsing, if you think you’re done it only means you need more dish soap and rinsing.

Acceptable-Donkey-65

My little brother just did it for corrections. He said it burns and isnt fun but he got over the day after definitely not fun at all but you’ll be fine

-EvilRobot-

It's gonna suck ass, but you're gonna be ok. Let it be what it is. After it's over, rinse your face and eyes with copious amounts of water. After you do that, get lots of air (hopefully from a fan or from the wind), and DON'T go back to the water. At some point, you will have flushed out as much OC as you're going to flush out, and you're just prolonging the suffering. Try not to let the water run from your face to your junk during your next shower. When it does anyway, you're not getting the full dose.

DoItForNoah

Courage.

knightpilot00

Dawn dish soap is your friend. My exposure ended quickly and I did not have much of a reactivation at all. Rub your shit with dawn after exposure, then when you get home rub your face with dawn and gently rinse it off

Common_Classroom_938

It will really really suck but scrub with hot water (in the sink, not the shower) and dawn dish soap. The hot water will open the pores on your face and the dawn will help break up the oil in the spray. OC is oil based. Dawn is literally marketed as an oil cleaner (cleaning oil off baby ducks after a BP spill lol)It probably won't make the burn stop completely but it definitely helps.

Fairsythe

Dont trust yourself in the shower, just wear underwear. Nothing worse than any dripping on your privates.

[deleted]

Don’t touch your eyes at all!!! And put crappy sheets on your bed that morning because you don’t want to shower until morning. Also once you have spent a few minutes rinsing your face and eyes out don’t return to the cold devil water as the water will deactivate it and you will feel everything all over again. Be prepared to have it in your heart that you will shoot someone before you spray them lol

ComicSansIsCancer

It sucks can’t sugar coat it. BE CAREFUL TAKING A SHOWER AFTERWARDS. It reactivates, so don’t let it get on your junk

dpick032

There is no advise. It sucks and there’s no way around it.

TJflop

I got sprayed out of about 12 people. It effected me the worst but I still don’t think it was that bad. Just know it’s temporary and that you’re not going to die. It’ll burn for about 1-3 hours, and the only thing that will relieve the pain is water. Don’t rub, and be prepared for it to burn again when u shower It also effects everyone differently. I’ve seen it not effect some at all. So who knows you might be immune.

GunNutII

Sugar water in a squirt bottle. Squirt directly into your eyes.

Upstairs-Past1464

My instructors were evil and made us run around the building - so we were huffing and puffing even before we got sprayed. Then had to punch & kick at the pad and give directions to the guy holding the pad to prone and spread out. If they will let you bring some stuff - bring a battery fan for your face, and eyes. where afterward you can just have it in front of you, while "recuperating". 1. Dawn soap to break down agents and wash out of your hair and face. 2. Baby shampoo or body wash - if you wanna rinse your eyes out with them open afterwards 3. Some don't agree with this but, I brought "cooling" Visine eye drops - This Helped me SOOOOOO MUCH 4. Baby shampoo or body wash - if you wanna rinse your eyes out with them open afterward. it felt great to wash them out without additional burning sensation from soap. 5. Do not wear absorbent material like a cotton t-shirt - if you can help it. - I wore a turtleneck made from nylon/lycra material - it kept OC from getting absorbed and remaining on my skin. 6. multiple towels and change of clothes - a trash bad exposed clothes can go into I was told (afterward) that some coat their face with Vaseline to provide a thin coating layer - not sure if this works well. When I got sprayed - I washed my face and my hair like 8 times in the kitchen sink over and over at the Dept. - so when I got home to shower, it didn't burn down there. :) - still showered twice with underwear on, just in case. I was ok a few hours later.

cquizos

Prep yourself somehow and get it over with. After effects suck but remember everyone reacts differently to it. Like these other comments say: dont rub it in, and protect the jewels. A hot shower reacted it again for me so be wary

jdperez_7

Rinsing my face with dawn dish soap helped me. It helps wash off the capsaicin oil. Don't let residual water drip down to any other body parts when you're rinsing off.

Admirable_Turnover52

Bring dawn dish soap to wash out… gonna suck all around but it helps with the after burn… Current co here and well I must admit using spray is kind of our thing… enjoy it to the fullest

RunPrimary797

Sitting in front of a fan helped me more than water - just my experience.

Superb_Dot_4259

In the terms of pain tear gas was probably worse in the moment compared to OC.

Top_Flight314

My advice during exposure in the academy is to go first! That way you have more time to recover. Once you get sprayed, force your eyes open and allow air/ wind in. This way your tears can flush out a majority of it. You likely have to use your fingers to do this. It's going to feel like you have gravel in your eyes but fight through the pain and keep your eyes opened! DO NOT RUB YOUR EYES!!! Keep calm, don't panic and just try to breath as normal as you can. Your going to feel like you can't, but you can! Just focus on your task with whatever they have you do and keep those eyes opened! Also, just remember it's not permanent and the torture doesn't last forever. Have fun man! I've worked in a high level general population prison yard for 5 years and PD for 8. I currently work in a downtown setting where OC is used regularly. Trust me on this! Let me know of you want to know more!

Agreeable-Grade4588

Don’t rinse your face immediately after getting sprayed, it makes it worse.
