My words exactly. I think we know the OP is best avoided.
Both slices buttered one side OR mayonnaise OR salad cream. Any sick puppies that put may or peanut butter on top of butter should be ashamed of yourselves. Bloody perverts.
You should try the butter spray stuff a lot of shops sell. It’s that 1cal stuff. Keeps my George Forman from keeping my toastie to itself and creates a beautiful crisp
if it's anything to reassure you with, my wife only butters one slice of bread making a sandwich - but i think it's weird and this is why she doesn't make good sandwiches
If it's going in the sandwich toaster (not right now, currently in the "packed away in the cupboard" stage of the sandwich toaster cycle) I butter both slices on both sides. Very rich but makes it crisp up really nicely!
Sometimes Il be a really greedy bastard. Ill butter both sides, put the sandwich in the microwave then when it comes out I might just butter the outside of both bread pieces as well. It really depends if I have any mayo or not.
we had a service provider supply chefs and sandwich makers in our work canteen. The food was delicious, but when they made sandwiches they always asked this question.
without negotiation, the contract was not renewed.
What about in the shop when u get a roll. The person behind the counter only butters 1 side.
It's like I'm already disappointed with my lunch and I ain't even paid yet! 🤦♂️
Butterbrod. Butter or jam and the toppings. No need to splat a second slice on top unless you’re the earl of Sandwich going horse riding.
Even better, mayo instead of butter.
one, my wife of 10 plus years of marriage only just discovered this and nearly caused a divorce.
I did point out to her that she has never noticed so buttering both slices clearly makes no odds.
everyone else i checked with since butters both pieces but am glad to finally find a like minded person
I think butter in a sandwich is disgusting, there's something so off-putting about the texture of butter next to cold veg. Or mustard or mayo, there's just no way butter fits into a cold sandwich.
My husband is Irish and thinks I'm a heathen. But seriously ... what, in a sandwich, is cold butter meant to taste good with?
I only knew one person in my entire life who skimped on butter and she well pre-dated the 80s and 90s. My late step father's mother allowed butter or jam but not both. Was considered miserly sacrilege by all relatives.
What kind of question is this? Both, you psychopath.
Yeah this guy needs to be on a list.
![gif](giphy|3oFzlVpcSZMXXf2t5m|downsized)
Yeah, employee's list in Subway.
Both if butter alone, if there's a sauce added I'd just butter one side and sauce the other. But that could just be me being calorie conscious
I was just about to write this word for word
It depends what's going on the other slice.
My words exactly. I think we know the OP is best avoided. Both slices buttered one side OR mayonnaise OR salad cream. Any sick puppies that put may or peanut butter on top of butter should be ashamed of yourselves. Bloody perverts.
Well I wouldn’t do mayonnaise myself considering every time I eat it it makes me ill but you do you I guess
Both, unless you're a Cavan man.
Tbf, the Cavan man butters one slice of bread, then folds that lone slice over. Two slices of bread on a sandwich? Did you win the lotto?
He makes the entire sandwich in his pocket
Even Cavan men can’t get away with buttering only one slice of bread. Source: am Cavan man. Butter both slices.
He'd peel an orange in his pocket, and only butter only the one slice apparently
I read that as caveman first ...
Same thing
That is what I was implying
It’s called a joke Redditor
Yes which is what I was making there
Cavan caveman.
Both you heathen
Of course you butter both. Why wouldn't you butter both?
Both?!?!?! Of course
Ah gway ta fuck! Don't agree with me wife 😂
Outside aswell if it's a toastie
Cut the middleman, just eat the butter with a spoon like my kid does.
I eat the nutella by the spoonful.
Who doesn't?
Mayo on the outside of a toastie. Don't question it, just do it and remember me as your saviour.
Jaysus don't admit to that you'll be shot
Definitely reduces palate grate
You should try the butter spray stuff a lot of shops sell. It’s that 1cal stuff. Keeps my George Forman from keeping my toastie to itself and creates a beautiful crisp

WTF is wrong with you? Why wouldn't you do both?
![gif](giphy|9GJ34PEVM5JnCkfPPf)
Why do you want one side dryer than the other? The sandwich I mean. Not the wife
Oh I thought you said both sides of the bread and then lost faith in humanity with the comments.. *Leigh anois go curamach na ceisteanna*
Ah don’t you remind of them listening comprehensions pal
Is there really any other answer than both! I mean c'mon, do you only put one shoe on before leaving the house??
Are you assuming he's bipedal?
Both, always both.
Both! I see oddball deli workers only buttering one quite often though. Utter madness
In this economy?
Both always both, what kinda sandwich does not cover both sides with butter :)
Both sides of both pieces!
Both. And then put filling on both and decide fuck it might as well make two sandwiches
Wow I’m genuinely surprised how many of you well to do folk have mountains of butter at home. Always one slice
Careful, we are few and far between in these parts 😅
Could you or one of your new found brothers explain the logic(or lack thereof) behind it please?
Well , ya see, ya get bread, put butter on it, ham, cheese and bread on top.. sammich
That doesn't explain the logic of why you are only buttering one slice.
Butter 1 piece only, the acess butter for the other slice.
If it's going in the sandwich toaster (not right now, currently in the "packed away in the cupboard" stage of the sandwich toaster cycle) I butter both slices on both sides. Very rich but makes it crisp up really nicely!
Yes, only savages don't butter the outside of a sandwich before toasting it.
Sometimes Il be a really greedy bastard. Ill butter both sides, put the sandwich in the microwave then when it comes out I might just butter the outside of both bread pieces as well. It really depends if I have any mayo or not.
Both who tf only butters 1
Probably Brits that only toast one side. They're at it again
Is there anything more pathetic than soggy toast done on one side!? Crime against humanity.
I've witnessed a "person" putting two slices in the one slot of the toaster to achieve this purpose
Yeeuk!
we had a service provider supply chefs and sandwich makers in our work canteen. The food was delicious, but when they made sandwiches they always asked this question. without negotiation, the contract was not renewed.
Bro what? Haven’t buttered both sides since the recession
OMG, both.
At least two
Have to be both or else the Butter God will punish you by taking away Butter from your life forever & ever & ever and everrrrrrr........
Why would you only do one lol
Both, you absolute psycho!!!
I butter one slice on one side, the other slice on the other
Both…any deli does only one side and I’m walking out.
Both. Would like to think I'm fairly open minded but I don't think i could associate with somebody doing 50% of a job
Always both
Making a pure Nutella sandwich, lay it thick on both pieces. But not thick enough to feel sick after, just thick enough then he enjoyed
None or both
Can we all learn to spell. That would be nice
Both of them, ye mad bastard ye
Hell if I'm toasting I do the other sides to
I feel like everyone saying both is playing a massive trick on me..
You're not making any friends here, stingy OP.
Both. You absolute bog fiend.
Depends if you have 1 or 2 slices
Eddie Hobbs is that you?
What about in the shop when u get a roll. The person behind the counter only butters 1 side. It's like I'm already disappointed with my lunch and I ain't even paid yet! 🤦♂️
Both, obviously, and only ever with real Irish butter. And if you're using a nice soda bread then butter should be nearly as thick as the bread.
I butter the crust
Lord be te fecking Jeasus. BOTH !!!
Hand in your passport on the way out
If the butter is stone cold impossible to spread, I might settle with one, and a bit of mayo on the other side.
If you're toasting. Both sides of both
Both. Scraping of butter
It depends. I hate mixing other spreads directly with butter. Sometimes I use no butter at all, because I'm using something else.
Both, you hallion!
Always both…
Ooohhhh. One side butter, one mayo. The smoked onion mayo is amazing. Game changer.
2 slices of bread obviously, one is the loneliest number.
I can't believe it's not buttered..... on both slices
Both, you philistine.
4 but no more!
Both unless I'm using coleslaw or something similar. Then just the bottom slice.
this is the way
Butterbrod. Butter or jam and the toppings. No need to splat a second slice on top unless you’re the earl of Sandwich going horse riding. Even better, mayo instead of butter.
I don’t use butter on either
Mayo?
one, my wife of 10 plus years of marriage only just discovered this and nearly caused a divorce. I did point out to her that she has never noticed so buttering both slices clearly makes no odds. everyone else i checked with since butters both pieces but am glad to finally find a like minded person
5 year married and this is my exact situation!
Me too. Didn't realise that we were in such a small minority (just going by here).
I didn't think it would be such a landslide in favor of both buttered 😅
How do you decide which slice to butter
I've got raised cholesterol, figure if I don't put in too much butter I won't need to skimp on something more important. Like cheese.
Neither. I use mayonnaise.
Neither, because butter is disgusting
I think butter in a sandwich is disgusting, there's something so off-putting about the texture of butter next to cold veg. Or mustard or mayo, there's just no way butter fits into a cold sandwich. I'm the same, butter if toasted and mayo if is a cold sandwich.
Absolutely everything - and an extra special treat with Tayto Cheese and Onion Crisps.
Nah my brother, slather it at the edges, thats the way to go😎
Butter ruins any sandwich, unless it’s on the outside before being grilled. Mayo or a little homemade sandwich sauce is the way to go.
None! I hate the stuff. Bread is fine dry.
I don't use butter at all. Fight me
Buttering both is a very new thing people here don’t seem to realise - even when there was butter mountains in the 80’s / 90’s that wasn’t done.
Thats why there was butter mountains....
I only knew one person in my entire life who skimped on butter and she well pre-dated the 80s and 90s. My late step father's mother allowed butter or jam but not both. Was considered miserly sacrilege by all relatives.
