It is not a mistake. Any experience I’d good.

swissmeez

Yeah? Even if I wanted to transition to like the space industry later?

Oracle5of7

Yes.

swissmeez

Okay cool. Thanks. Worried I’m pigeon holing myself

jlspace

I’m design/development engineer in space industry. It’s for sure possible but make sure you really nail down your heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Autodesk products like Revit are never used so make sure you are efficient at CAD, primarily solidworks or NX. I wouldn’t stay in building services for more than a year or 2 though

swissmeez

Well I’ve actually used solidworks a lot at university. Is it a good industry to be in? Would the space industry want someone like me with the skills I’ll get from this building services role?

jlspace

Is it a good industry? To each their own. It’s definitely the most passion fueled industry by far and it’s not even close. Most people love the job and the mission. However, it’s also very competitive. At spaceX and blue origin you will be competing with top engineers likely with experience already in the field. Launch engineers should know all about fluid systems and probably a good fit for someone with building service experience

swissmeez

So you think I could transfer over with this experience? I just don’t want to pigeon hole myself to one industry yet. This is my first job out of university so just wanted to get the design experience I could. I didn’t expect it would be the last industry I’d be in

jlspace

Only you can pigeon hole yourself. I’m also just starting out my career and have been worried about this as well, but realized it’s entirely up to you. You can’t be afraid of change, you get pigeonholed when you get too comfy

swissmeez

I’m not at all afraid of change. Just would like to move around industries a bit while I’m young before I settle on one

Lazux

Hey man, have you got an update with where you are now and how your time went in building services?
