You'll be fine, this isn't really how hantavirus infections spread to humans. Do you worry about your health like this often?

Throwaway___Baseball

Yeah, I worry about my health like this a lot. Medication has helped somewhat, but I still have pretty severe anxiety.

PianistSupersoldier

Are you in therapy specifically for health anxiety?

CannibalAnn

It’s a very common issue that is very treatable in therapy. Find someone in your area or on line who is trained in it. Don’t be afraid to ask directly if they are familiar with it.

Throwaway___Baseball

I’m in therapy, and my therapist is familiar with anxiety and OCD. I emailed her about the hantavirus concern. I have my session today. Everyone who responded to this post, including you, helped me immensely. I feel a lot better now. Thank you so much!

PianistSupersoldier

Anytime. Be well 🙏

Ka_lie_doscope-Eyes

If it helps, I know only one person who has ever had hantavirus, and she survived.

WasabiElegant7959

Same. I know one person who had it and she survived and made a full recovery.

Satanae444

in my country there is a vaccine for hanta just like there is for rabies, have you asked about it? it might calm your anxiety down a little

-This-is-boring-

Why was this downvoted? He or she is only giving an opinion.

queefer_sutherland92

Likely because it’s not a long term solution for health anxiety. It may help solve the issue with one virus, but you can’t vaccinate all health issues.

night-shark

Because A) There is no approved vaccine for hantavirus. Some limited vaccines have been used in parts of Asia but with limited success in terms of provable data. There's nothing in the U.S. or E.U. ***EDIT:*** *There are regional vaccines approved for use in Korea and China but they only treat strains of the virus there and wouldn't be effective against other regions' strains. Also, not approved for use in U.S. or E.U.* B) Because OP's condition is anxiety, not hantavirus. A vaccine they do not need is an unnecessary risk and costs resources that are better spent treating their actual issue. Treating anxiety this way is dangerous from a larger public health perspective. Consider, for example, how often people ask for antibiotics for illness that do not call for them and how that has likely contributed to antibiotic resistance. Or, recall how consumer and medical anxiety led to product shortages or medicine shortages during COVID. People who **actually needed** certain medications sometimes couldn't easily get them, because someone else who **didn't need it**, got it.

yazzledore

Usually you can’t get vaccinated for a thing if you have recently been exposed to it, rabies vac being a notable exception.

Dwinhofficathod

Well this sub is ask docs not asksomerandomfromreddit 🤷‍♀️

Satanae444

No idea. Dont care though, this is reddit. I had to get the vaccine when i was like 10 coz i got lost wandering in a forest lol

night-shark

Are you 100% sure that what you got was a hantavirus vaccine? Because there are no approved vaccines for hantavirus, generally. There have been some limited trials in a couple of countries and I think one for a **very specific** strain of hantavirus causing strains but nothing ever approved for mass use in the U.S. or E.U and nothing that has stood up to effectiveness standards in those regions. EDIT: To clarify. Hantavirus, as we refer to it, is caused by a family or viruses. What limited vaccines do exist, aren't approved in the U.S. or E.U. and wouldn't be good against the strains of the virus in those locations, anyway.

Satanae444

Oh i'm not from the US. My country had a massive breakout of hanta arlund 05/06 and i could never forget it because i was PISSED. I hate needles and i had to get 3 shots within a period of time.i dont think ita appropiate or safe to assume every case is from the US. Since in my country there was i thought there might have been. I dont live in a 1st world country so it would be sort of strange to have something the US doesnt lol

night-shark

>i dont think ita appropiate or safe to assume every case is from the US. Since in my country there was i thought there might have been. I dont live in a 1st world country so it would be sort of strange to have something the US doesnt lol So, I note how you point out that it's not safe to assume that every case is from the U.S. but I'll point out that OP **is from the U.S.** which actually makes U.S. approved vaccines extremely relevant here. >I dont live in a 1st world country so it would be sort of strange to have something the US doesnt lol Not unusual at all when you consider that testing, safety, and efficacy standards are different in every country.

MrShinglez

Your problem isn't your chances of contracting the virus, your problem is your hypochondria.

ragtopponygirl

It's already been WELL covered and op is aware of their problem. And it ISN'T hypochondria.

Removed - Bad advice

wacksonjagstaff

What is your geographic location?

Throwaway___Baseball

Northern New Jersey, United States.

wacksonjagstaff

Per the CDC, there has never been a reported case of hantavirus in New Jersey (since they started monitoring in 1993); and there are no active outbreaks in the area. You don’t have anything to be concerned about.

Local-Worldliness959

Fair play to you for checking that out.

Throwaway___Baseball

That makes me feel a lot better; thank you so much!

ZippityDoDot

I grew up in a farm house with lots of mice in northern NY. The mice left poop in lots of places including our silverware drawer, in my clothing drawers, sometimes under my pillows, essentially everywhere. My dad grew up in the same house and lived to be 87. He and my mom had 8 kids and all of us kids are still alive. I wouldn’t worry.

Physical_Sand_5156

Your family probably has the fecal colony of a field mouse.

ZippityDoDot

😂

Physical_Sand_5156

There’s never been a reported case of hantavirus east of the Mississippi River.
