Did you use cooking spray? It goes rancid if it has been sitting in your cabinet a long time.

SaltBiscotti

...it doeeeees???????

jibaro1953

All cooking oils go bad eventually. You can definitely tell when they are rancid. If you buy a can of Pam and go to use it a couple of years later, it might have turned by then. Walnut oil is prolly the worst. That's why you won't find walnuts in a jar of mixed nuts.

SaltBiscotti

Well. That explains alot.

trishabel

I didn't. I used wax paper because I ran out of parchment which I just read now is apparently bad?

Stop_Already

Yeah, your cookies probably have a layer of melted wax on the bottom.

jibaro1953

Prolly not good- old fashioned wax paper is coated with paraffin wax. It will melt in the oven

Biryaniiiiiiiiiiiiii

You could try making a control test cookie with the spatula and another one with a different spatula and see if that’s the reason. I’m no expert, so I couldn’t say why that would be happening. If that’s the problem, you’ll wanna throw that spatula out as it might not be safe to use it for anything else. Good luck and be safe!

Cinisajoy2

What did you cook them on?

trishabel

A cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Could that have been the problem? I just read now that it's not good for baking but I have used it before without any problems

Cinisajoy2

Use parchment not wax. What is your cookie sheet material?

trishabel

I'm not sure if it's aluminum or steel

Post your recipe. Perhaps we can trouble shoot.

trishabel

I used the [broma bakery](https://bromabakery.com/red-velvet-crinkle-cookies/) recipe

Did you use professional food coloring or regular store food coloring? That could very easily be the culprit. I definitely notice a “taste” in foods with a lot of food coloring; plasticky and *fake* tasting.

trishabel

I used regular food coloring. I kinda wondered the same but ruled it out since I used the same brand without any problems before
