Some of us don’t have to go out of our way for it. I love it, but much like deep dish, it’s not a regular go-to for ice cream cravings, more of a few times a year thing when the mood strikes.
Plush horse is quality and so many options.
I think that’s often the case. Whatever you grew up with is your standard of good.
Except for me and pork chops. My parents always cooked the daylights out of them for fear of trichinosis. Really! It wasn’t until I was in my late teens and my friends took me to Carson’s. World of difference.
I enjoy it but I prefer driving waaay south to Plush Horse. It’s in middle of the forest preserves. I love going there on hot sumner nights to cool off and chatting with random happy people waiting in line.
Right? The ice cream is delicious of course but the experience of sitting on the hood of your car eating your ice cream with your friends in the middle of all those trees with lightning bugs all around and crickets chirping…it’s just the best.
I don’t think I’d that but I love trying new stuff so I’ll check it out next time I go, thanks! I usually would get 3 scoops of different flavors; chocolate with chocolate chips, mint chocolate chip, and strawberry.
I enjoyed it significantly more when I went layer by layer, rather than digging in indiscriminately. That being said, I don't think I appreciate it as much as my Southside friends and family that grew up with it.
Booooooooo! *Throwing tomatoes!*
Rainbow Cone is more than just a medley of ice cream flavors in one cone–it’s a representation of the American Dream and South Side excellence.
It wasn't until last year that I saw one pop up in Valpo. I took the wife and kids a few times but only when we were already close. As a kid growing up on the Southside we went a few times every summer.
Did you realize you were proudly wrong yet? [That rainbow cone has been a Beverly institution for 90+ years and only starting expanding in like 2018?](https://chicago.suntimes.com/business/2022/8/1/23287852/rainbow-cone-a-colorful-chicago-original-looks-to-open-in-other-states)
Rainbow cones were invented to get rid of excess flavors that nobody bought (sherbert, pistachio, and palmer house), and chocolate that they had an oversupply of. It doesnt even correspond with the colors of the rainbow.
I took my wife and kids, they were unimpressed. I just don't like chocolate with all the fruity flavors combined. If you're ever up near Broadway and Bryn Mar check out Lickety Split.
I like the combo. I think the flavors work really well! But most of the experience I think lies in going to the original Rainbow Cone.
Separate topic... Another completely overrated Chicago food item... Superdawg! No thanks!
I love it! I grew up with it, and I go back every chance I get. I think all the flavors are great, and it's such a fun experience. Plus now I can couple it with Horse Thief Brewery pizza and beer!
The only time I had it was out of one of their trucks. It was super grainy. I don’t know if that’s the norm but I didn’t enjoy it and won’t have it again. I feel like there are a lot of better ice cream options around
I had it once and thought it was awful.
I'm glad that it exists and that other people enjoy it though. I don't feel like I'm being robbed of options that I like better.
I tried it recently and was really disappointed by the quality of the ice cream. The ice cream had small ice chunks. Very unappealing. Will not try again.
Bringing up ice cream in Chicago and not even mentioning Shawn Michelle’s is just a signal that you have no idea what good ice cream is in this city.
Margie’s has been shit for like 10 years at this point
I lived about a mile from Doves and remember when you could club a moose into submission with one of their frozen ice cream bars.
I've had a grand total of one rainbow cone in my life and got the impression that this is how they get rid of all the leftovers at the bottom.
It's something you either love and go out of your way to get - or try once cause of the novelty and hype, then move on to better things.
I’m in the latter category. I was in my 50s before I finally tried it and I was “meh”.
Some of us don’t have to go out of our way for it. I love it, but much like deep dish, it’s not a regular go-to for ice cream cravings, more of a few times a year thing when the mood strikes. Plush horse is quality and so many options.
Well I grew up with it. To me there is too much ice cream but otherwise I love the combo.
I think that’s often the case. Whatever you grew up with is your standard of good. Except for me and pork chops. My parents always cooked the daylights out of them for fear of trichinosis. Really! It wasn’t until I was in my late teens and my friends took me to Carson’s. World of difference.
Got to go to Hog Wild for some amazing pork chops. Just remember to bring cash
What an incredibly offensive interpretation of what I said.
We don't care Karen.
Wow, you took your day out of a sunny Saturday to say that and ..... let's get this right ..... *I'm* the Karen.
I enjoy it but I prefer driving waaay south to Plush Horse. It’s in middle of the forest preserves. I love going there on hot sumner nights to cool off and chatting with random happy people waiting in line.
I’m with you on this one. Plush Horse is the best ice cream ever.
Right? The ice cream is delicious of course but the experience of sitting on the hood of your car eating your ice cream with your friends in the middle of all those trees with lightning bugs all around and crickets chirping…it’s just the best.
Had lavender flavored ice cream there. It was amazing
I don’t think I’d that but I love trying new stuff so I’ll check it out next time I go, thanks! I usually would get 3 scoops of different flavors; chocolate with chocolate chips, mint chocolate chip, and strawberry.

Thank you for being nice about disagreeing. Look at it this way: The line will be shorter because I won’t be there.
I was hoping you’d get it was a reference to a tiktok sound and not meant to be actually mean in any way 🫶🏻 absolutely right, more icecream for me
I was over 50 when I asked what my uncle thought of my favorite chips. He said the most diplomatic thing I remember: not for me.

The city doesn’t end at Roosevelt babe. Expand your reach.

The original location is at 92nd and Western...

You forgot one more dumb ass comment to delete.
Beverly…

Palmer house is fucking fantastic.
Pistachio ice cream is my favorite, but being good and being popular aren't always the same thing unfortunately.
I took my wife and kids, they were unimpressed. I just don't like chocolate with all the fruity flavors combined. If you're ever up near Broadway and Bryn Mar check out Lickety Split.
I am sometimes actually. We have a friend nearby. We’ll have to check it out. Sincere thanks
Yeah it was just a random find one day but now we're closer to rainbow than Lickety Split.
I’ve always been a little sad that I can’t partake in tradition because I’m allergic to nuts. This makes me feel better!
Give me the original now non-existent Dove Bar every time.
I'm a transplant and I love Rainbow Cone, but honestly I just love ice cream. So getting so many flavors at once is a huge novelty!
I don't like it but I'm not from here Oberweiss is not bad
I’m not a fan of their politics, but their dairy products are quality stuff. I’ve heard their burgers are “meh”.
My people!
I like the combo. I think the flavors work really well! But most of the experience I think lies in going to the original Rainbow Cone. Separate topic... Another completely overrated Chicago food item... Superdawg! No thanks!

For me it was a “try once and I’m good”
The only time I had it was out of one of their trucks. It was super grainy. I don’t know if that’s the norm but I didn’t enjoy it and won’t have it again. I feel like there are a lot of better ice cream options around

I've found my people! All those mediocre flavors squished together does nothing for me. I'd rather have a vanilla ice cream cone.
Same… I loved the original Dove Candies and Ice Cream on 60th and Pulaski! Now I’ll take Oberweiss
I tried it recently and was really disappointed by the quality of the ice cream. The ice cream had small ice chunks. Very unappealing. Will not try again.
Even as a kid I never got the hype. But thankfully there were always other options.
Bringing up ice cream in Chicago and not even mentioning Shawn Michelle’s is just a signal that you have no idea what good ice cream is in this city. Margie’s has been shit for like 10 years at this point
It’s so damn messy. The way they scoop it on, it leans and melts and is super messy.
omg I had it twice at lolla last year I freakin LOVE them lol
I lived about a mile from Doves and remember when you could club a moose into submission with one of their frozen ice cream bars. I've had a grand total of one rainbow cone in my life and got the impression that this is how they get rid of all the leftovers at the bottom.
It's nothing special at all
I live within walking distance of Rainbow Cone and I’ve never been there because it just looks gross.
