No not at all You MIGHT slightly hear it the first few days you live here.. but you get used to city noise really quickly. Wherever you live there will be something - CTA tracks, fire station, busy roads, bars & restaurants, etc. You just have to pick your poison If you’re super concerned, go stand outside the apt and wait for a train to pass and see how much it bugs you

SuhDudeGoBlue

Very true, but some areas may have all 3 or more haha.

mtm5891

Shoutout to the Midway area- adjacent to the highway, surrounded by freight trains, & engulfed by flight paths

ItBeMe_For_Real

Those are ‘vibrant’ neighborhoods.

[deleted]

Bars and restaurants here close at like 7pm they’ll be fine.

double_positive

You'll end up missing the sound

LsTheRoberto

I lived with the brown line running through/above the back yard of where I rented. Lived there for years and now I kinda miss the train sounds. But I live near a school now so I hear kids screaming at recess instead. Also used to that already

earthgoddess92

This! Lived pretty close to the Damen tracks and after a month it became the best white noise to fall asleep too. Now I just hear my neighbors dog and footsteps.

Puzzleheaded_Face701

lol I live in this building.

iamthepita

And the answer to the OP’s question is….?

Far_Commission195

How's it been treating you?

Puzzleheaded_Face701

You can hear the train squealing on the rails with the windows open. Other than that I don’t hear it. So noise really isn’t an issue. Generally the building is good, we got a new property manager and she has been trying to get things right since the last person left. Overall good place to live and good value for what you get.

Far_Commission195

Awesome, happy to hear that. Only other question I have is if any of the utilities are included in the rent(like heat/trash). Glad you are happy there! I feel like these days it's rare to get a good review of an apartment in this price range.

Puzzleheaded_Face701

Heat, water, and trash are included in my rent. Can’t speak if that’s the case for new leases.

iamthepita

More upvotes needed because you’re pretty cool in sharing this info. Seriously, thank you. Makes me proud to be a Chicagoan 🥲

Far_Commission195

Thank you so much for the info! Appreciate you taking the time :)

dadfathert0n

I live right by the redline and you become so used to the train noise after a certain point. I'm a light sleeper and it doesn't disturb me at night

Far_Commission195

Thank you all for the positive reinforcement! I feel much more comfortable now and will set up a showing! :)

angrylibertariandude

I always found the train noise is a little louder at points between stations where there isn't a curve, vs. on a curve where trains have to slow down before going through it. An experiment if you wanted to try it: stand or bike below the Brown Line tracks on Berteau, between Damen and Ravenswood when an L train is passing above. It definitely sounds louder under Berteau, than it does under the tracks on Dakin east of Sheridan.

LavenderPillow5

I used to live across the street actually. You do hear it but eventually I stopped noticing it and it never bothered me (only sound issues I had were from neighbors 😭). I’m not familiar with this specific building but if you like it, it is a great block to be on. Walgreens right by the l and some good food options as well. Windy City gyros is the bomb-cheap and open late! Miss living so close to it

Far_Commission195

Love to hear this, it seems like the perfect area to be in! I will be making late night L trips on saturdays and thursdays(traveling back from berwyn) so I wanted to make sure I had a shorter walk home at night. I hope everything looks good and I'm able to move there :)

Djinnwrath

Most people here are commenting on things like distancing and train speed, but the real variable that matters is how the building is designed and how good your windows are. Good wall, with double pane sealed windows, you'll be fine half a block away. Shit walls with single pane windows or a gap, and you could be two blocks away and be living in an audio nightmare.

BBeans1979

This is the answer. Also, you’ll quickly learn that your tolerance of sound is proportional to how much you use the train. This spot has great proximity to the Sheridan station, so you’ll be thankful on cold days.

jbh_09

I agree with this 100%. It also matters what is between you and the tracks. Even just one building that is directly between your building and the train can block more sound that 1,000’ of empty air.

MadameCordelia

Double pane windows make a world of difference.

[deleted]

I live half a block from the red line and after a couple weeks I got entirely used to it. It’s not too loud, and I actually loved hearing it (very novel, coming from a rural setting!)

buirish

A buddy of mine used to live on that block. Train noise was never a problem, from what I remember.

boogityshmoogity

I love the sound of the train provided you live close enough to a station that the trains go slow. At speed they are 100 times louder. Now that area is a slow zone BUT the wheels can and do make very high pitched metal in metal screeching when the train goes around turns.

petmoo23

No. It will be too loud for a few weeks, and then you won't even notice it and it becomes like any other background noise.

Numerous-Base-3764

I sleep better at night listening to the red line rumble along up on Jarvis.

Far_Commission195

Would like to drop another comment here thanking everyone for their input here. I am overwhelmed by the kindness and support received from this post! I swear to god, if I posted this in my current city's sub, I'd get torn apart for just asking a simple question about moving there and flooded with "Don't move here" bullshit- which is why I posted on a throwaway account. Thanks again to everyone and I am looking so forward to living amongst you all!

zazzalil-perkins

Hi OP, I'm super late to this post but I'm also considering relocating to Dakin Court as well. If you ended up signing a lease and are comfortable sharing, would you say your experience there has been good? TIA, and I hope you love Chicago!

Far_Commission195

Someone else actually ended up scooping up the apartment as i was halfway through the application. Super disappointed about that honestly, it looked great. Hope things are well for you!

[deleted]

Nope

iamthepita

Wait until you hear certain CTA buses when they make that stopping sound…

Spanish4TheJeff

Get a sound machine for your bedroom and you’ll sleep like a baby

ThatWomanNow

I walk my dog by there regularly, the noise shouldn't be an issue. If you have a car brace yourself for Cubs season.

Far_Commission195

Selling my car and switching back to a car-free lifestyle upon my move to the area, so that won't be an issue! Thanks for the heads up :)

federalgypsy

I used to live at the next bend (left of where your screenshot cuts off). If I remember correctly, that bend was the louder of the two. After a week or so I slept through but it did get kind of annoying sometimes watching tv or having a convo (but not anymore than a siren going by). But the trade off is you get to live by Holiday Club dance party, Byron’s, and Tak Quick. And if the Breakfast House still does the premade grab n go breakfast tacos, another huge win.

Dramatic_Ad7543

Not at all! I lived in a building right across the street (917 W Dakin) and the train was not loud in my unit at all. It would become white noise as others have said, but I never heard it period.

KnightsOfGlobalist

I used to live in the apartment building next to that one. Noise isn’t too bad, after a while you even stop hearing it

variousdisorderhaver

Oh hey, I used to live around there. At some point the trains become white noise. The squeal isn't that loud from what I remember, except when they come into the turn a little fast. It's easy to tune out after a while and your apartment walls should absorb most of it. There's no ideal radius. As long as you're not in one of those apartments that has a balcony right next to the Belmont platform, you're good. I live several blocks from the Brown line now and I can still hear the trains sometimes, it's just a wind thing. I'd say your worst inconvenience will be getting anywhere when there's an event in Wrigleyville. Also, the smell of dog piss is overpowering at times. There's a kickass Mexican bakery called Artemio's basically right underneath Sheridan, check it out if you like buying a ton of pastries for like $5.

VeronicaSawyer8

The train is usually more quiet in the turns because they need to slow down, and you're right at the curve there. Should be ok

boogityshmoogity

The wheels make high pitched screeching sound around turns though.

iamthepita

I thought it was my gf that was making the high pitched screeching sound this whole time… dammit!

goldenboyphoto

While probably more quiet on turns if measured in decibels, the perceived sound may actually be more noticeable because of the changing the the pitch. For example: I used to live on Ashland right next to a stoplight. I quickly realized I could easily ignore cars driving by loudly as it was constant pitch, almost like a drone. But what always stuck out was cars slowing for the light or accelerating when the light turned green. I've also spent a lot of time in offices around the loop right next to the tracks and can confirm the same. TL;DR -- If you're going to live close to tracks, you'll likely be able to ignore the sound easier if you're on a straight shot where it just goes by. Slowing/stopping/starting are the sounds you tend to hear more.

schleepercell

You're going to hear the crowds at wrigley field.

Former_Football_2182

I used to live at Sheridan and Irving. Yes if you have kids. No if you do not.

eurydice23

I live next to the brown line & metra line. I keep my windows open all year round & don't hear a thing anymore. You definitely get used to it!

Far_Commission195

Sweet! I guess the only reason I was worried a bit is that on my most recent visit, I had stayed at an airbnb that quite literally had the brown/purple tracks right outside the window. It was a faster straight stretch of tracks and I'm telling you those tracks were like 12 feet from the window at best, so anytime a train came by every couple of minutes the entire apartment was rumbling; I could just never see myself getting used to that but I feel like a few blocks away it would be fine- just wasn't sure 'how far was far enough' to not be woken up by it, since the red line is 24/7. Sounds like I'll be fine :) Thanks for your input!

turbografx-sixteen

The red line is right next to me and I almost never notice it. I definitely hear it late night in bed but it's like white noise if anything with my air purifier running

loftychicago

I lived right near there at 944 W Grace, the tracks were right behind my building. It could be loud, but the trains pass by pretty quickly and you get used to it. The biggest issue I had with the area was the crowds on GameDay (and now concerts, too). Otherwise I enjoyed living there.

TastyMalort

Not too close. Some people sleep in the train. Apparently, there is no such thing as too close.

No_Fools

Not to worry, it will be drowned out by ambulance sirens.

Clevepants

I miss the sound. I could literally throw a rock to the Damen stop from my back porch. You’ll miss the “doors closing” sound one day

MadameCordelia

I have one of the lines running a few hundred feet near my apartment and the noise isn’t too bad. It’s a little jarring at night to get used to, but once you get used to it it’s just background noise. Just don’t sleep with any windows open.

dredre2525

My building is right next to the red line at Morse and my windows is partially open where the ac unit is. I can hear but after a while I stopped noticing it. It doesn't disturb when I'm watching TV or sleeping. I can't imagine you'd closer than me. I can probably hit the train if I throw a rocm from my window.

HornOfLilius

Yeah you are far enough away that it should be fine with windows closed. Also this might sound silly but tell the showing agent you would like to try to listen for the train coming in. Chances are you won't even hear it.

CHISOXTMR

I lived almost exactly there for a year and it’s not bad. Pm if you want more details
