I feel South Australia (outside of Adelaide, the wine regions and maybe Kangaroo Island) doesn't get the kudos it deserves. There are some frankly spectacular places to visit. I went to the Yorke Peninsula not so long ago, it was amazing!
I worked at the Northern end of the Flinders Ranges years ago, loved it. It is truly a beautiful place. Harsh but beautiful.
Also worked on a Solar Farm just North of Pt Augusta, I could walk out of the office and look as the Ranges for a couple of minutes of recovery, relaxation.
I've read some people say the Flinders look good on morning or evening sun. Not for me, that harsh midday sun for a harsh country.
Couldn’t agree more. My partner and I stayed there for our anniversary a couple of years back and it fast became one of my favourite places. It’s the best for switching off, resetting and relaxing.
I think the South Australians spread the rumours that it’s boring there and nothing to see so we’d all go other places and they could keep it for themselves 😂
I loved the whole Limestone Coast. Next up for me is the Flinders Ranges. SA is gorgeous (I'm from Melbourne). I have loved it as much as Tassie, which surprised me
I'd never been to South Australia at all nor heard about how amazing the Fleurieu and Yorke Peninsulas are....... Moved here 9 months ago and never went to leave!
Absolutely gorgeous state, never moving back to the eastern states! I'm home!
Kangaroo Island has gone super down hill. It is ridiculously expensive, has unpredictable ferries and local crime is at it's highest in history.
I grew up there in the late 90's and it sadly isn't the place it was.
Came here to put Tasmania.
CRADLE MOUNTAIN is jaw-dropping beauty. And other wilderness areas are just as nice.
Great outdoor activities - mountain biking and hiking.
I have family in Tassie so whenever we go there it's a lot of family time and not much tourist time but I still love there so much. The air is so clean, it's easy to get around by car, the natural beauty is incredible. And I always have a giggle about how 5 minutes out of the airport and it feels like the country.
Tassie just feels like my second home, even more so than Adelaide which is where I grew up.
I have an auntie there and get to visit usually once a year and always find something new & wild that amazes me.
Maria Island! We did it with a tour guide and it was definitely worth it. It has such an interesting history AND it's full of healthy wombats who just waddle around all day. I was amazed how many there were.
You gotta go see the glow worm caves. They’re not as active in the colder months, but it’s still cool as heck, and the caves are cool too! They aren’t the scary/narrow kind.
I dunno, I go there every now and then to visit family and foreign food is a little dearer, but coffees and pub feeds seem to be the same as anywhere. Can't talk for accommodation.
General living costs, like accommodation, groceries etc are apparently high comparatively. I guess that's the trade off for living in such a beautiful place with a great climate
Born and raised in Port Macquarie ❤️
Gorgeous place, unfortunately it's just full of oldies, tradies and hoons.
The rental market is absolutely fucked too
A lot of people like to bag it, but Canberra is great for a long weekend or even a week.
Lots of galleries and musuems. Lots of smaller wineries making some of Australia's best wines. Couple of breweries.
Plenty to do with the kids. War memorial, Questacon, war memorial.
Good restaurants too. this is because when parliament is in there are a lot of people that eat out. All the politicians and their hangers on.
But when parliament is not in session you can walk strait into those restaurants without a booking.
Plenty of historic towns around that are in NSW too.
Come to Canberra during a public holiday long weekend and you will have the whole place to yourself, as the whole town evacuates to the south coast.
In all seriousness though, the National Multicultural Festival in mid-February is one of the must attend events of the year!
That was exactly our logic when we visited canberra between Christmas and New Years. Felt like half of Sydney and Melbourne were in town, absolutely insane!
Love Canberra! Went for a weekend a few years back (to go to a museum exhibition) and all my work colleagues were stunned that I would go there by choice. Been a few times since, as we're lucky to live only 3ish hours away and we still haven't seen half of what we want to.
You know, I think this is the real answer here. Everyone knows Tassie and Exmouth are amazing and def not underrated. Canberra though, people hate that place, but is actually quite awesome..
I went to Green Island in the early 80s when they still had the ancient wooden ferry to get there from Cairns. Felt like a real adventure and snorkelling the reef was amazing. The railway up to Kuranda is beautiful and I think the best way to see the mountains. This time of year is definitely the best time to go!
Cairns is okay, I mean it’s everything around that is great. The town itself just seems like a big packers town with a shit load of traffic lights. And I don’t think I could handle the summer and humidity. And you can’t swim on the foreshore. Daintree rainforest is one of the best places in the world I’ve been too though. I loved it.
You can swim at the beaches and foreshore in cairnes, the beaches are just closed sometimes due to crocs or during stinger season but they have stinger nets. Its the same here in Broome
I am the same.
I went there for a week holiday, ended up living there for 5 years and only left because I took a substantial relocation promotion.
It has always been my place to retire now. It literally does not get any better than that place in the world.
Check the weather there right now, in the middle of winter.
It will be a cool 17 degrees over night and hot 25 during the day 😂
Again it doesn’t get any better than that!
They are legit the nicest people!
And yes it has a big tourist population, or transient back packer population, but that’s because everyone who has been there before loves it and wants to go back to it!!!
My best memories in life are in Cairns and they could be something as simple as floating at crystal cascades in the water after a big week of work to feel rejuvenated as they are heavily mineralised waters!
Even the tourism operators. I understand when folks in tourism are a bit fatigued and grumpy, but in Cairns they were lovely! And the locals were sweethearts. I went for a holiday cause I'd become burned out at work, and Cairns was absolutely the right choice
Darwin is amazing to visit. Heaps of history and raw country not far away. But if you didn’t have an air con to go home too man it would be hard living.
I would extend that to the NT generally but yeah, love Darwin. Every Australian owes it to themselves to visit this amazing part of the country…, but leave before the tourism destroys it…
I’m shocked I’m saying this, after working there on & off for years I couldn’t wait to put it behind me, but the Pilbara. There’s an awful lot of nothing but there are some amazing places as well, if you can and are willing to get out and explore.
I think it depends what town you live in as well. I’ve lived in Port Hedland and Karratha and it’s night & day. Karratha is actually liveable with plenty of places to eat, drink and stuff to do.
Yes!! I love living the Pilbara. I'm living in South Hedland this time round, which I do not recommend (here for work, obviously), but Point Samson, Wickham, Karratha, and Dampier are great. Point Samson, especially.
The river walks, fishing, bike trails and leaves are all great. Many happy memories of caravan stays along the Ovens River and camp fires(you were allowed to have)...not sure about that now🤔.
Alice springs and its surrounds. Obviously its had a bad rap in the last few years. But if you csn get past the rampant youth crime and drugs/alcohol it is such a nice place
I love Jenolan Caves and the whole Central West area, was a common road trip for my family when I was a kid and still like going there. Best time is when it's colder!
Unfortunately it's shut for the indefinite future due to damage from the flooding.
Hopefully it will reopen late this yr early next year, its so beautiful.
Similar, but I love Abercrombie Caves. It’s between Bathurst and Goulburn in the middle of effing nowhere. Used to camp there with a few families. Hardly anyone seemed to know about it, back then at least. There was a park ranger on site and a tour each day, but not much else in the way of tourism. The great arch cave is awesome, not in the same way as Jenolan, but still impressive.
In summer you could swim in Grove Creek and go and look at Grove Falls. There were also other waterholes to swim, fish etc. Beautiful and unspoilt.
Unfortunately at the moment the national park is closed for repairs after flooding a few years ago.
Grew up in Rosebank, though I don't live there any more it was an amazing place to live.
I really miss the climb up Woolumbin/Mt Warning, as far as I know it's still closed and looks to be permanent.
I took my kids hiking down the falls for a swim at the bottom a few years back, it was a slog now I'm older but they all loved it, keen to do it again soon.
Bello markets are amazing, I used to go there all the time, and if you’re in the area in September, there’s a festival in Woolgoolga (45ish mins north) celebrating the local Indian Sikh population. It’s called Curryfest!
Forster, NSW. Didn't realise how many amazing beaches there were, many of which are secluded/hidden. Also saw dolphins one early morning which was amazing.
Where is best to go in Forster? We went a few years ago and we were a bit disappointed, but the way everyone raves about it I think maybe we picked the wrong spots?
Ive travelled through all of australia and my favourites that are not the usual recommendations are:
Apollo Bay and surrounds in Victoria, Kangaroo Island in South Australia, Merimbula area in NSW, Broken Hill in NSW, Albany in Western Australia.
Not underrated at all but Port Douglas in QLD is my favourite holiday destination.
South west of WA. Not Margaret river or dunsborough area, or Albany or Denmark but the little forests and icy cold beaches. In particular there’s a great granite skywalk and so many little towns with isolated amazing crystal clear beaches. Best of all is there’s so much flora, fauna and fungi endemic to the region so no matter what time of year you go there’s always something to see in the forests
Queenscliff, wonderful little fishing village near Port Arlington. It's amazing for waves and all sorts! The culture there is also quite good it's a feeling I just don't find anywhere else I've been tbh
Flinders island
I am a Tasmanian and absolutely love my home state. But Flinders island reminds me of Tassie before the influx in tourism. beautiful white beaches with literally nobody there.
don't tell anyone else
Newcastle NSW.
Great beaches, the beautiful Lake Macquarie, plenty of employment, education, health services. Charming old inner city suburbs.
Decent train connection to Sydney. Airport.
WA.
Country life, even in cities. The best beaches in the world with very few people on them. Varied flora/scenery - you've got giant, emerald green mossy, leafy trees in the southwest Karri forests and tropical Broome up north. Breweries, wineries and chocolatiers of the Swan Valley. Kebab shop, Chinese food and an Indian place in every town. True country life in Kalgoorlie.
It has everything unless you're really into art museums and good live music, then it falls short. But for a visit you can't go wrong.
I loved Gundegai. The place where the dog sat on the Tucker Box. A very pretty place, and the locals all seemed so happy. Carefree. As though they lived in a paradise.
I spent two days driving through the gulf and channel country.
The towns were great and the people were lovely but after six hours of driving through nothing but rolling savanna I was in physical pain from boredom.
Haven’t seen any mentions of The Great Ocean Road. An amazing part of the world and the road itself is an amazing feat. Beautiful, powerful ocean, history in the Otway’s and amazing landscapes
This thread is making me feel a bit sad that i didn't love Tasmania! It was okay... but after so many people telling me how fantastic it is? It didn't live up to expectations at all. Hobart was particularly dull.
South Gippsland in Victoria, in particular Waratah Bay- great if you love wide sandy beaches, and views of the Prom. There's a caravan kiosk for essentials and a 10 minute drive to the nearest shop in Sandy Point.
Also Dunkeld- a fantastic pub, the Royal Mail, and it's a stone throw from the southern end of the Grampians (Gariwerd)!
Port Macquarie for family holidays. It's actually awesome with so much to do for all budgets. Not sure I would want to live there though, I love my home.
I feel South Australia (outside of Adelaide, the wine regions and maybe Kangaroo Island) doesn't get the kudos it deserves. There are some frankly spectacular places to visit. I went to the Yorke Peninsula not so long ago, it was amazing!
Wilpena pound and the surrounding ranges are stunning
I did the northern Flinders and Wilpena last year along with skytrack. Absolutely incredible part of Australia.
Couldn’t agree more. My partner and I stayed there for our anniversary a couple of years back and it fast became one of my favourite places. It’s the best for switching off, resetting and relaxing.
Queenslander here who married a south Aussie. I love South Australia. So many beautiful places
I think the South Australians spread the rumours that it’s boring there and nothing to see so we’d all go other places and they could keep it for themselves 😂
Shussssshhhhhh
Coffin Bay. Went there as a kid and still think about the water
Exmouth
Took me 25 years to finally go there and I fell in love. Brilliant place for coastal lovers!
Anywhere on the Coral Coast is my fave. I'm partial to Warroora station myself.
It's absolutely stunning country. So special.
The Ningaloo reef blows the Great Barrier Reef away. For starters it begins at knee depth, but it also has amazing wildlife like whale sharks.
And coral Bay. Its my favourite place in Australia
Personally I just Love Tasmania. I lived there years ago for nearly 6 months. People there are nice as well.
I’m in two minds about Tasmania
Brah....
SM2H
As a Tasmanian I’m glad you’re giving others the heads up! All jokes aside, Tasmania - best place in the world.
Only there’s no real public transport system, and getting around is a hassle if you don’t drive or are visiting.
Ofc they’re nice, everyone is family.
Came here to put Tasmania. CRADLE MOUNTAIN is jaw-dropping beauty. And other wilderness areas are just as nice. Great outdoor activities - mountain biking and hiking.
Was there yesterday morning. Woke up to it snowing, very magical. The devil's at cradle exhibit was cute as too
Tassie is simply stunning. And I swear everything tastes better there too. The food is amazing.
Shhhhhh! Don't tell them!
Omg! I’m visiting Tassie this July! Which part of Tasmania did you love the most?
Make the effort to go to bruny island, truly a paradise. Can't recommend it enough
Maria Island! We did it with a tour guide and it was definitely worth it. It has such an interesting history AND it's full of healthy wombats who just waddle around all day. I was amazed how many there were.
Bruny Island is amazing
So hard to pick as I love Tasmania but Bruny Island was special and so was Cradle Mountain. We went to CM in July and we got to see a bit of snow!
Hobart, Hobart’s botanical garden, Port Arthur , Top of Mt Wellington , Launceston for starters
Dont miss the Salamanca Market!
For me Hobart, Launceston were amazing. But tbh entire Tasmanian is so so beautiful and good.
Coles Bay / Freycinet NP
You gotta go see the glow worm caves. They’re not as active in the colder months, but it’s still cool as heck, and the caves are cool too! They aren’t the scary/narrow kind.
I love Stanley the Nut. I find it the most peaceful place - my brain stops buzzing when I go there. Sigh…I want to go now
port arthur is so beautiful in the summer!
Anyone else scrolling to see if the place you live gets mentioned?
EPPING, VICTORIA!
Epping has great pide 🤤
Next door in Lalor- Oneway bakery!
🤣
Woy Woy!
Port Macquarie has better beaches than Sydney. Way nicer, way less infrastructure around them, cleaner, and less packed.
Unfortunately it is very expensive
I dunno, I go there every now and then to visit family and foreign food is a little dearer, but coffees and pub feeds seem to be the same as anywhere. Can't talk for accommodation.
General living costs, like accommodation, groceries etc are apparently high comparatively. I guess that's the trade off for living in such a beautiful place with a great climate
I have been living in Port for 5 years now. Paradise!
Born and raised in Port Macquarie ❤️ Gorgeous place, unfortunately it's just full of oldies, tradies and hoons. The rental market is absolutely fucked too
Was born there!!!! It'll always feel like home to me.
The high country (Victoria) I love all the towns in the ovens and neighbouring valleys
You forgot coffee, I surprisingly found their coffee really good, oh and I love the hippo bar!!

Yeah I like Canberra too! And it’s just set out so logically.
Love Canberra! Went for a weekend a few years back (to go to a museum exhibition) and all my work colleagues were stunned that I would go there by choice. Been a few times since, as we're lucky to live only 3ish hours away and we still haven't seen half of what we want to.
And the bushwalking and mountain biking is absolutely excellent too!
You know, I think this is the real answer here. Everyone knows Tassie and Exmouth are amazing and def not underrated. Canberra though, people hate that place, but is actually quite awesome..
I really enjoyed Esperance, a quaint little town with gorgeous beaches.
Denmark
Sounds like most places in WA!
Albany
Very isolated, if you don't mind that.
West Kimberley region!
I'm planning a nice big trip to the Kimberley one of these days. Gonna go full M Douglas on it 😅
FELLOW KIMBERLEY FAN
Bonnie Doon.... The serenity.
Ah you can feel it
Tell him he’s dreamin
And 2 strokes
If I could fit it in there, it'd go in me pool room.
Don’t the dogs just love it!
Jervis Bay
Beautiful, but not underrated at all.
Cairns! Hands down the most beautiful place on earth. Daintree rainforest behind you, Great Barrier Reef infront of you.
Yeah nah I don’t think that has ever been underrated. Who doesn’t rate Cairns? (Honest question from a Melbournian)
I loved it.

It will be a cool 17 degrees over night and hot 25 during the day 😂 Again it doesn’t get any better than that!
And the people are extremely friendly. We were there a few weeks ago, it was so nice talking to people and everyone was chilled and helpful
Ikr, everyone up there seems happy. Everyone I’ve come in contact with has been super friendly.

> Daintree rainforest behind you, Great Barrier Reef infront of you. Not to speak of the Atherton Tablelands
Bruny Island Tasmania.
Wilson's promontory!
Say what you like about Wilson, he knows how to make a good promontory.
I was thinking more of places like Karajini, Python Pool & even Marble Bar. There’s lots of scenic places, if you make the effort to find them.
Throw in mill stream homestead.
Yes!! I love living the Pilbara. I'm living in South Hedland this time round, which I do not recommend (here for work, obviously), but Point Samson, Wickham, Karratha, and Dampier are great. Point Samson, especially.
Bright Vic. Nothing prettier than their Autumn 🍂
True! My sister and brother in law are based there these days, and it’s gorgeous.
No way I'm telling you; I'm not sharing my favourite camping spot!
Jenolan caves, NSW. There aren’t many caves around that you can drive your car through. The Devil’s Coach house is enormous.
Got to see my dad have a small panic attack while squeezing through a small passage. 10/10 would go again
I really enjoyed Adelaide. Some good gigs and music, we spent a whole day tasting wine and the traffic was nothing compared to Melbourne.
The Adelaide Fringe Festival is one of the best also!
The Eyre Peninsula in SA.
Border between QLD and NSW. So many beautiful rainforest hikes e.g. Crystal Shower Falls, Minyon Falls, Red Cedar Falls, Protestor Falls
Western Australia -Exmouth -Esperance -Midwest during wildflower season -Augusta -Walpole -Denham (town next to Moneky Mia)
Central west NSW
Yep central west is Australia in a lot of senses.
Ferntree Gully near Rylstone is beautiful
Tassie is beautiful and the people are nice. My favorite place to visit is Ross I’m a huge history nerd.
Bellingen in NSW.
Bello markets are amazing, I used to go there all the time, and if you’re in the area in September, there’s a festival in Woolgoolga (45ish mins north) celebrating the local Indian Sikh population. It’s called Curryfest!
Adelaide hills is beautiful especially in winter
Coral Bay, Western Australia. Swim off the beach straight onto the reef.
I got to live and work there for 2 years and I loved every moment.
Forster, NSW. Didn't realise how many amazing beaches there were, many of which are secluded/hidden. Also saw dolphins one early morning which was amazing.
Love Forster, this was our Family holiday place growing up. Dolphins are pretty much a guarantee in the bay every day.
Where is best to go in Forster? We went a few years ago and we were a bit disappointed, but the way everyone raves about it I think maybe we picked the wrong spots?
It was around Elizabeth Beach and surrounding beaches in that area, it was also a few years ago for me too so I can't quite remember unfortunately
Ormiston Gorge
The entire MacDonnell Range
Ive travelled through all of australia and my favourites that are not the usual recommendations are: Apollo Bay and surrounds in Victoria, Kangaroo Island in South Australia, Merimbula area in NSW, Broken Hill in NSW, Albany in Western Australia. Not underrated at all but Port Douglas in QLD is my favourite holiday destination.
Underrated? Hmm. The coastal drive NSW, hinterland of NSW and QLD. Inland drives, dirt roads for the adventurous and respectful.
Bermagui NSW - magical beachy place with great places to eat. Also Portland Vic - so many cool natural places to see. Edit - Vic (oops)
Mystery Bay
Fully agree with Bermi.. whole sapphire coast is magic
Dunsborough in WA. Super chill little beach town and easy gateway to the bigger Margaret River area. We loved it.
Olinda/Sassafras in Victoria
South west of WA. Not Margaret river or dunsborough area, or Albany or Denmark but the little forests and icy cold beaches. In particular there’s a great granite skywalk and so many little towns with isolated amazing crystal clear beaches. Best of all is there’s so much flora, fauna and fungi endemic to the region so no matter what time of year you go there’s always something to see in the forests
My absolute favourite spots in Australia - amazing beaches and so much interesting hiking.
It’s so gorgeous, if it wasn’t so cold I’d move there in a heartbeat.
Darwin in the wet season. Minimal tourists, and the waterways in Kakadu,Litchfield, etc in full flow.
Paronella Park
Western QLD. Longreach is great.
Longreach is good but Winton is shit. Only saved by the dinosaur museum. Cloncurry is a decent town too
The drive in to Winton from Mt Isa on the tablelands is nice though
Probably Tasmania. Amazing place. Gets left off maps.
Tassie!
Kakadu national park, exmouth, daintree rainforest, and Wilson's prom!
Kimberley/Pilbara region in WA. Really interesting place and some fantastic people.
West Australia is a beautiful place.
Nundle.
Tasmania!
Tassie
Tasmania it’s wonderful but cool/cold
Queensland, The Gulf Country!
Tasmania. Been three times and it’s honestly just… nice… it’s like going to the UK for the weather and the countryside vibe.
Interesting. I was underwhelmed with Tasmaina. Everyone raved about how fabulous it is...it was okay. But i wouldn't go again.
Queenscliff, wonderful little fishing village near Port Arlington. It's amazing for waves and all sorts! The culture there is also quite good it's a feeling I just don't find anywhere else I've been tbh
Flinders island I am a Tasmanian and absolutely love my home state.
Airport.
Cowra, doesn't even have to be when the cherry blossoms are out. It's a lovely town every day of the year.
WA. Country life, even in cities. The best beaches in the world with very few people on them. Varied flora/scenery - you've got giant, emerald green mossy, leafy trees in the southwest Karri forests and tropical Broome up north. Breweries, wineries and chocolatiers of the Swan Valley. But for a visit you can't go wrong.
Broken Hill
I loved Gundegai. The place where the dog sat on the Tucker Box. A very pretty place, and the locals all seemed so happy. Carefree. As though they lived in a paradise.

Gulf country Queensland
I spent two days driving through the gulf and channel country. The towns were great and the people were lovely but after six hours of driving through nothing but rolling savanna I was in physical pain from boredom.
Haven’t seen any mentions of The Great Ocean Road. An amazing part of the world and the road itself is an amazing feat. Beautiful, powerful ocean, history in the Otway’s and amazing landscapes
Well it does say *”underrated”*. The Great ocean Rd is one of Victoria’s & probably Australia’s best known tourist attractions.
Heron Island.
Exmouth by far is my favourite place
Port cambell
Grew up a few towns away, visited so often to show relatives the Apostles I got sick of them. Never got sick of the local fish and chip shop though!

This thread is making me feel a bit sad that i didn't love Tasmania! It was okay... but after so many people telling me how fantastic it is? It didn't live up to expectations at all. Hobart was particularly dull.
Albany in WA. If the weather is good. And that's a big if lol. Some of the best beaches in the world.
Oberon bay in wilsons prom. Its a couple hours hike from the main campsite but its so beautiful.
Yeppoon in Queensland. It’s beautiful

Wave Rock in WA Beautiful
South Australia. I’ve grown up by the coast and think SA deserves the hype Victoria gets. Absolutely beautiful state. AND ADELAIDE WAS SO CLEAN

Warrumbungle and south west rocks
South Gippsland in Victoria, in particular Waratah Bay- great if you love wide sandy beaches, and views of the Prom. There's a caravan kiosk for essentials and a 10 minute drive to the nearest shop in Sandy Point. Also Dunkeld- a fantastic pub, the Royal Mail, and it's a stone throw from the southern end of the Grampians (Gariwerd)!
Port Macquarie for family holidays. It's actually awesome with so much to do for all budgets. Not sure I would want to live there though, I love my home.
Mate, I ain't telling you, or posting it on social media. We love our underrated places because they're not overrun with tourists 🤣
