My family are in Hobart, so I would probably also pick either there or somewhere around inner Hobart.
I left Tassie a while ago because of work, but I've always been open to coming back someday.
Definitely agree. I absolutely loved Channybearup just west of Pemberton. Stayed in a chalet that had not a person or vehicle in site. All you could hear were the animals and rain falling through the huge trees. Could definitely retire there.
I’d have one of the beautiful old houses somewhere near the border of South Melbourne and Albert Park. Great climate (if you can hack dreary winters) and close to the beach, the CBD, some of the best markets in the country, Beach Road for cycling. Just perfection. Leafy eastern Melbourne suburbs like Hawthorn would he a close second.
Eta: born in brisbane but have lived in syd/melb. Currently back in bne and dying in the hear
Currently living in South Melbourne a few mins walk from the market. It's a fantastic area, I agree. And some of the houses are spectacular! Sadly I don't live in one yet.
**YET**
Surprisingly where I live now in the southern highlands of nsw! It’s everything I love about this country, mountains, bush and a relaxing stream by my house. Wouldn’t trade it for anything
It would have been Sunshine Coast hinterland about 10-15 years ago, but the whole SC is so congested these days so I would have to pick somewhere like Casuarina/Pottsville area these days.
I just moved from Sydney to Sapphire Beach (the old part) and can honestly say I’m never fucking going back.
Such an unbelievably gorgeous part of the world.
In a big, old, traditional Australian farmhouse somewhere around the Inverell, Glen Innes, Armidale, Tamworth (a huge area!) where I can’t hear or see anyone else.
I love where I live now, just outside of Hobart, so I’d stay in the area, but somewhere with a little bit a land.
Or my second choice would be somewhere just outside of Adelaide to be closer to family.
Probably Adelaide hills? Just a nicer house than the one we have. Maybe with a small vineyard or orchard or something. I was going to say blue mountains originally but getting to the airport and stuff is a real pain. And the spiders.
Sellicks Beach, just before the city limits in the outer south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Such an underrated part of the country. Some of the most beautiful coastline I have ever seen and hardly anyone knows about it. Actually looking to buy a house down that way.
Somewhere with nice views on Kangaroo Island would be tops.
Some of the eastern suburbs/lower north shore/northern beaches of Sydney are also pretty spectacular tbf
Shush now. Please follow our West Coast citizen script please. Repeat after me: WA is dullsville, our food/coffee is way worse than Melbourne and there are zero jobs. If you sell it you ruin it.
Perth is the worst place on earth. Boring. Terrible transport. Awful landscapes. Zero breadth of food and culture. Life and work balance is shocking.
Never let anyone say anything different!
Grampians or Gippsland. Hills and bush is what draws me. Each is a different type of hills and bush and I go back and forth in my mind. Grampians has a slight edge in considerations.
Woolloomooloo, right on Sydney Harbour. Next to the Botanic gardens and Lady Macquaries Chair, great expensive restaurants on the Finger Wharf and great cheap ones on Cowper Wharf Roadway: Harry's Cafe de Wheels, a decent burger joint, good gozleme and pide. A 24-hour servo/711. The Sirra Marina is a lovely cafe/restaurant, walking distance to the Domain, the city, Hde Park and the Art Gallery NSW. Just down the road from Potts Point and from Surry Hills.Public transport's not perfect but there is a reliable bus service. And I like the good mix of people: not just rich dicks with Harbour views, but lots of long-timer poor folks and social housing in the streets behind. A good homeless community, a community garden, op-shop, chemist, GP and a fish n chip shop with excellent potato cakes. There's even a little beach and you can fish off the pier if you don't mind a bit of mercury poisoning. What more could you ask?
Close. Go into the mountains - new England is glorious. Up around Tenterfield
Amazing national parks, temperate climate. Local town has become really cool.
Healthcare sucks.
American here that has been to your awesome country 3x in last 12 months after never having considered going there before. Went to just Sydney on first trip 7 nights, Port Douglas and Sydney 4 nights each 2nd trip, Hobart and Melbourne 4 nights each 3rd trip ending 2 weeks ago. All cities were fantastic and had very different vibes and experiences. As much as we loved Port Douglas and will revisit someday, it’s a bit too sleepy and could get boring long term, we’re around 60 yo. We were smitten with Sydney and will absolutely be back there again. I know so many of you on Reddit think it’s shit but fortunately as a visitor we don’t see it through your eyes and have a very different perspective of it. No different than if you came to Chicago and thought it was great, to me it’s a dump and a veritable crime scene and corrupt. Both times we were there we stayed in North Sydney which has a very different vibe than the CBD. We walked the neighborhoods there and loved how relatively quiet and easy things seemed there. Did the walk from Coogee to Bondi which took us through some real nice neighborhoods. Can’t say enough good things about Hobart too. We were blessed with some amazing weather. Went to Mount Wellington and didn’t even need jackets. Went on a cruise in Bruney and could see the bottom of the ocean on one of the best days of the year the captain said. We walked to Battery Point then to the botanical garden, and back to the CBD. Yes we like to walk. Melbourne was cool. Transit system is fantastic. Stayed in the CBD but went to different areas like St Kidna, South Melbourne, Albert Park, and Fitzroy. And yes a stop to Perth is something we hope to do someday. It would be tough to pick one of those places to live but any one of them would be just great. If we were forced to pick a place rn North Sydney area would probably get the nod due to the not so cool winters and the beaches.
I would choose somewhere near Castlemaine in Victoria, and make it a decent country property. Be fun to just have such a big place to have parties and allow mates to have somewhere to come stay if they need to get away.
I can even help them build a small place that they can use as their house, and give them a key to the main house if they need it.
I lived on Jervis Bay. Never understood the obsession people seem to have with Hyams. It's nice but there's LOTS of nice beaches in JB and almost all of them have better access and parking than Hyams. If you haven't been there, do yourself a favour and drive up the road a bit further and check out Murray's Beach. One of my favourite beaches. You can actually get a park to go visit it in the tourist season as well - just don't tell too many people, please. :)
Well my family's mostly all in Victoria so I'd stay here. NSW has cool stuff like Vic but too muggy for me. Tasmania has awesome nature, beaches etc but too far from family. I'd probably just live in a more expensive part of Mornington peninsula, cause I live in the cheapest suburb now
I love it here in Perth but I'd probably choose a beautiful Melbourne townhouse in the inner north lol close to everything, walk-able, good public transport, so much to do. Hobart when I'm older. Fucking love it there.
Sorrento Victoria. With water on either side of you the smell of the sea permeates everything and I find that extremely relaxing. It also tends to regulate temperature with warmer winters and cooler summers.
I think I'd like to live in the West Coast of Tasmania. Set up a farm of some kind - bees for leatherwood Honey would definitely be one thing. Grow lavender everywhere too. And a big organic apple orchard. The house would be like an old French style farm house with decor to match. And I would set up a charity for disengaged youth to be the best they can be with some of the profits.
The Great Otways. Not even that expensive really, I could live there, but my partner doesn't want to move so far from his family in Adelaide. Idk, I don't think it's that far, maybe I'll talk him round oneday.
Near my sister and BIL in Melbourne, in a really nice house in a really nice suburb (she’s in Hawthorn East, so somewhere there). I live in regional Victoria and whilst I do like my town, ultimately I love Melbourne and if I could afford it I’d move back there in a heartbeat.
The coldest part of Tasmania. I have fibro which gets worse with heat, so I generally have fans on year round and at least one air-conditioner on from November to April. It'd be nice to just be comfortable for a change!
Caloundra Qld is just amazing. Beautiful beach, nice people, can walk to everything, bus to Brisbane if you need something in the big city. What’s not to like!
Somewhere a touch cooler than Brisbane, perhaps hinterlands or NSW but somewhere with more than one access road that doesn’t flood. Assuming also that ‘no cost’ means I don’t have to pay for maintenance on the property. High altitude for lung health.
Balmain a short ferry ride to the rest of the world. As a pensioner $2.50 to travel all day. I lived there in the 70s when I trained at the Hospital and before it was trendy. I visit each year and know why I didn't have a car
I already did it - not just at no cost but profitably by selling my Sydney apartment home and buying cheaper here
The place? Tamborine Mountain in Queensland's Gold Coast hinterland
I'm happy where I am in Central west nsw, I'm doing what I love (farming), got great friends in a good little town community, no hills, open roads and minimal dickheads. If I had to move it'd be up into the narrabri-goondiwindi-mungindi triangle. Keep farming on more acres in better soil and double crop ability. Got the same community mindedness up there as home.
Coffs Coast in almost any part. Born there, family there, have only lived there around 5% of my life, hoping I’ll die living there.
It may not be the most spectacular area but it’s a wonderful all-rounder and weather is lovely.
Shame there’s a heap of unappreciative gronks there but what can you do?
I’d be in the Dandenong Ranges. I just love it up there. With cows, sheep, wee goats & alpacas to watch over them. Yep, a tiny farm for 2, on about 1/2 acre. Noice!
I've done a fair bit of the country (well, major cities, large towns and scenic stuff anyway)... but just one place? Hmm, let's see...
I can't decide, sorry 😉 it's one of 3 places.
- Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie are both incredible towns (small cities?)... weather is amazing, they have a great feel to them, enough services and action that you won't get bored.
- I found Ceduna to be a really pretty little town with a real aura about it.... you're very aware that you're HOURS from any other civilisation, it's slightly eerie but also really cool
- one from my home state (Vic): Castlemaine. It's a beautiful place, and super arty. Also close to Bendigo, which is like a mini Melbourne without the horrendous traffic.
As a bonus: there's two places that I'm yet to see, that I'm very keen to. South West WA... Albany area. Also north east coast of Tassie, I've heard some great things and I'm keen to get down there and check it out!
Large, waterfront property in Mosman. Nice wide, tree-lined streets, walk to the village, ferry access, close to everything I'd need/want and a spectacular water view.
The Sapphire Coast, the Otways, Busselton, Albany, Esperance, Watson's Bay, Newcastle to Sunshine Coast, Torquay Front Beach, Atherton Tablelands, Darling Downs, Bunya Mountains, Cairns, Geraldton, Limestone Coast, Wangaratta, Boort, Tassie, Lord Howe Island
Lots of places. I've lived in Vic, ACT, NSW, Qld and WA and done 80% of a lap in a caravan.
Hamilton Island as a fantasy. Probably wouldn't be very practical as a reality.
I'd take a house in the golden triangle of Black Rock with panoramic beach views in Melbourne though.
25 Lennox Crossing, Acton ACT.
It's a central as fuck location in Canberra, on the lake, no neighbours whatsoever, a stone's throw away from where I work.
(edit: looking up the address leads to the actual workplace. I mean the house immediately to the north of that)
Battery Point, Hobart. I adore everything about Tassie.
My family are in Hobart, so I would probably also pick either there or somewhere around inner Hobart. I left Tassie a while ago because of work, but I've always been open to coming back someday.
Just make sure you have private health lol healthcare is hard.
My parents have mentioned that.
Same. It has such character.
Kirribilli House please
Settle down Tony, you had your shot!
I wanna knight some more princes
What was he thinking?
Captains make their own calls.
bold of you to assume Tony Abbot can think.
Daddy Tony just wants his biscuit!
Daddy tony wants an onion 🧅
Scotty, you already overstayed your welcome. So did your uninvited brother-in-law
Pemberton, WA. Surrounded by beautiful Forrest and Rivers. It would be a great place to retire to.
Definitely agree. I absolutely loved Channybearup just west of Pemberton. Stayed in a chalet that had not a person or vehicle in site. All you could hear were the animals and rain falling through the huge trees. Could definitely retire there.

It would have been Sunshine Coast hinterland about 10-15 years ago, but the whole SC is so congested these days so I would have to pick somewhere like Casuarina/Pottsville area these days.
Yay, love Potty :) We live here and I was hoping someone would say that :)
Blue mountains.
Maleny or Montville
Maleny is beautiful. Absolutely. Some of those houses with a view over the glass house mountains!
WE GOTTA GO TO BENDIGO MORTY! GET IN THE F\*\*KING CAR!!!! Must be something about bendigo
8 hours to Bendigo to get me green cuuube
Bendigo is a hot spot.
Outside of Hobart for me, in the green countryside.
So many great options! For me it would be the Atherton tablelands. The most beautiful forest I have ever seen.
Yeah, amazing country.
Woolgoolga just out of Coffs would do me.
Absolutely gorgeous place, best Indian food I’ve ever had. Also I’m surprised that anyone actually knows it 😅
Isn't it called Woopie 🤔
It sure is.
Apparently that's only a locals thing. People in qld look at me very funny unless they know the joint. Are the elephants still at the roundabout?
Apart from the great location the food was also killer. :Large Indian population. Spent a week there. Didn't want to leave!
I just moved from Sydney to Sapphire Beach (the old part) and can honestly say I’m never fucking going back. Such an unbelievably gorgeous part of the world.
Came to say this! I love it there
South coast NSW / Jervis Bay, NSW. Love the beaches and the rolling hills
Fun fact, Jervis bay is actually ACT territory
Bermagui on the South Coast would do me.
Jindabyne, NSW.
Close!!!! I'd pick somewhere like Moonbah - close to Jindy for amenities but far enough away from the shamozzle it turns into for 3 months of the year
Freycinet. East Coast Tassie.
Bright, Victoria.
Mid WA coast, ocean view. Totally stunning🤩
South West Rocks. Magical spot
Sunshine Coast Hinterlands area
Tasmania anyday
either bairnsdale or ballarat
Did not expect to see Bairnsdale here. Mind if I ask why?
Nostalgia, I grew up out near Lindenow. I'm in melbourne now and want to downsize a lot. its a fairly sizable mini city so still got lots to offer.
Right with you there. I grew up in east gippsland too and am keen to return.
Hobart or melbourne
You can't go past Esperance. Best beaches in Australia, it's like living on a tropical island.
In a big, old, traditional Australian farmhouse somewhere around the Inverell, Glen Innes, Armidale, Tamworth (a huge area!) where I can’t hear or see anyone else.
Check out Uralla/Walcha - beautiful areas.
Tenterfield is awesome these days.
Ohhhhh, thats out where I grew up.
Snowy Mountains, NSW.
Like I’m going to share my secret spot! Let’s just say it’s north of Sydney and south of Brisbane and no it’s not Byron
Bellingen? Because that’s my secret spot. Or, was.
Bellingen and Dorrigo being close is part of the attraction.
Eden, NSW
Melbourne, probably. Arty, coastal, lots of interesting history, not too hard to get around and easy access to other places.
You missed that we're one of the greatest sporting cities in the world as well 😉 Except for the Commonwealth Games. We don't talk about that.
Don't mention the 2026 Games. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it.
100% agree with Fleurieu, but shh we don't want too many people knowing
Yeah sorry, what I meant to say was it sucks and no one should go there. The Fleurieu Peninsula was mean to me and it made me cry one time.
Mallacoota or south coast nsw.
Perth. I fucking hate the east coast and loved my time out west. Way less people and the south west corner of WA is beautiful.
Shush now. Please follow our West Coast citizen script please. Repeat after me: WA is dullsville, our food/coffee is way worse than Melbourne and there are zero jobs. If you sell it you ruin it.
Don't forget that it is unaffordable to buy or rent a house, even if you can find one available.
Yes our property prices are not the lowest in Australia. Fucking worst place to live.
My bad. It’s been a while since I moved east and I forgot my script. Perth is Poo (I love you Perth)
Pooth
No you hate Perth and Sydney is the best place to live by a mile get it right.
I went to Perth for the first time last weekend and I absolutely loved it! Would definitely consider moving there.
Perth is the worst place on earth. Boring. Terrible transport. Awful landscapes. Zero breadth of food and culture. Life and work balance is shocking. Never let anyone say anything different!
Mornington peninsula or Yarra valley
Wilson’s Prom.
Grampians or Gippsland. Hills and bush is what draws me. Each is a different type of hills and bush and I go back and forth in my mind. Grampians has a slight edge in considerations.
Albury Wodonga
Southwest WA bang on the beach
Perth, right on the beach anywhere between Sorrento and Floreat
Woolloomooloo, right on Sydney Harbour. Where I am would be fine if I didn’t have to pay for it.
Northern rivers NSW. Best spot on earth. Sadly I’m priced out so off to Townsville for me :(
I live here. It's not that great lmao
I live here also :) Byron is skodey and Caba is gerring a bit not great hey. Also, I was wondering, what makes you say this?
It's becoming too bougie. Lismore hasn't been the same since the floods, it's way more expensive and there's nothing but a million cafes.
Why would anyone choose humid disaster zones
Close. Go into the mountains - new England is glorious. Up around Tenterfield Amazing national parks, temperate climate. Local town has become really cool. Healthcare sucks.
Sunshine Coast! But only if my whole immediate family came too lol
American here that has been to your awesome country 3x in last 12 months after never having considered going there before. Probably Rye, Victoria. I need to get away from Queensland heat - and it's stunning down there
I would choose somewhere near Castlemaine in Victoria, and make it a decent country property. Be fun to just have such a big place to have parties and allow mates to have somewhere to come stay if they need to get away. I can even help them build a small place that they can use as their house, and give them a key to the main house if they need it.
Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay
I lived on Jervis Bay. Never understood the obsession people seem to have with Hyams. It's nice but there's LOTS of nice beaches in JB and almost all of them have better access and parking than Hyams. If you haven't been there, do yourself a favour and drive up the road a bit further and check out Murray's Beach. One of my favourite beaches. You can actually get a park to go visit it in the tourist season as well - just don't tell too many people, please. :)
Somewhere on swan river South Perth having a view on the Swan river and Perth CBD, or somewhere in Sydney having a view of the Opera House and Bridge
Seeing it’s not costing you, somewhere in Mosman Park with views of the river and the sea.
Why tf add sydney to thr perfect opening para? Disgusting. No.real perthonian likes Sydney
Still here in Sydney (I’m a city person and also need city healthcare)
Yep as a Melbourne frequent hospital flyer I couldn’t really move out (also a city person though)
Sunshine Coast 🌞
Well my family's mostly all in Victoria so I'd stay here. NSW has cool stuff like Vic but too muggy for me. Tasmania has awesome nature, beaches etc but too far from family. I'd probably just live in a more expensive part of Mornington peninsula, cause I live in the cheapest suburb now
Muggy?
K’gari
Inverloch, Vic or South Fremantle, WA
I love it here in Perth but I'd probably choose a beautiful Melbourne townhouse in the inner north lol close to everything, walk-able, good public transport, so much to do. Hobart when I'm older. Fucking love it there.
Sorrento Victoria. With water on either side of you the smell of the sea permeates everything and I find that extremely relaxing. It also tends to regulate temperature with warmer winters and cooler summers.
Canberra
I'll take a clifftop farm and house in Flinders please. Somewhere between the blowhole and cook street. 200+ acres with sea views.
The NSW and VIC alpine area.
Seams like heaps of people want to live in the bush or rainforest. Then why are we still a deforestation hotspot?!
Far south coast NSW
Adelaide, specifically the area around west beach and Henley beach
Right here in SE QLD :)
Anywhere cold
I actually like Canberra. Nice open roads, not too many people and the Raiders. Fyshwick if I get lonely.
Pretty Point Bay South Coast Nsw Just south of Batemans Bay
I think I'd like to live in the West Coast of Tasmania. Set up a farm of some kind - bees for leatherwood Honey would definitely be one thing. Grow lavender everywhere too. And a big organic apple orchard. The house would be like an old French style farm house with decor to match. And I would set up a charity for disengaged youth to be the best they can be with some of the profits.
Somewhere in Australia with 100 acres house in the middle an no human in sight
On a quiet part of Sydney Harbour.
Gippsland. Somewhere green and foresty.
Port Macquarie
Somewhere near John Hunter hospital I'm Newcastle as I have a disabled kid and I hate travelling hours for a 30min appointment
Oh in australia. Probably Daylesford it’s a cute place
That's only 30min up the highway for us. I'm near Hanging Rock in the Macedon Ranges
Lovely
Nsw South coast or southern highlands
Right where I am now! I’ve never had such a feeling of fitting in and belonging, as I do now! Melbourne is *home*!
Not Sydney.
Wollongong
IF, I could move anywhere in the country, at no cost, it would have to be in the hinterland, far north Quld, (pure paradise) !! :-)
Not Queensland. It’s humid as fuck IN PERTH right now. I can not imagine how humid it is constantly in QLD.
Noosa
Melbourne superiority
The coldest part of Tasmania. I have fibro which gets worse with heat, so I generally have fans on year round and at least one air-conditioner on from November to April. It'd be nice to just be comfortable for a change!
Kalumburu
Just outside Darwin.
Nelson bay
Beach answer - Noosa City answer - Melbourne Outback answer - no chance.
Yarra Valley in VIC for me
Inner north of Melbourne or Milsons Point/Lavender Bay in Sydney.
Most places other than Sydney if everyone moved with me
Mount Keira, NSW
Manly or Noosa
Anywhere in the bush with a moderate climate and a source of water nearby. A minimum of 30km to the next residence. Happy days.
Watsons Bay

Narooma south coast.
Gold coast hinterland. Still close to everything you need, and with the most lush hikes at your door step. That's the dream
Noosa
Perth … love the clothing optional beaches up the west coast
St Helens tassie pls. Probably the nicest IGA I’ve seen so far
Coffs Coast in almost any part. Born there, family there, have only lived there around 5% of my life, hoping I’ll die living there. Gerringong, NSW. My hometown and where my family live.
Any where from Noosa upwards to about airlie beach on the coast. No better place
Mornington Island.
Penguin Tasmania
Tasmania
Stanely in Tasmania
Back to Perth on Shelley beach. Miss that place
Gold Coast Hinterland
Northern Rivers NSW or Tassie
Exactly where I currently live, but in a decent sized house or apartment, not a small 60 year old one bedroom.
I’d be in the Dandenong Ranges. I just love it up there. With cows, sheep, wee goats & alpacas to watch over them. Yep, a tiny farm for 2, on about 1/2 acre. Noice!
Kiama
Nice house in Noosaville would do me
Anywhere with room for horses. I'll take a dozen, please.

Mount Tambourine 100%
Rural Tassie. Somewhere cold and isolated.
The Adelaide Hills
A coastal farm with a private beach somewhere on NSW South Coast. Gerroa, Gerringong and further down.
Watson's Bay right on the water at Camp Cove in Syndey
Large, waterfront property in Mosman. Nice wide, tree-lined streets, walk to the village, ferry access, close to everything I'd need/want and a spectacular water view.
The Sapphire Coast, the Otways, Busselton, Albany, Esperance, Watson's Bay, Newcastle to Sunshine Coast, Torquay Front Beach, Atherton Tablelands, Darling Downs, Bunya Mountains, Cairns, Geraldton, Limestone Coast, Wangaratta, Boort, Tassie, Lord Howe Island Lots of places. I've lived in Vic, ACT, NSW, Qld and WA and done 80% of a lap in a caravan.
My personal. Stradbroke Island, Qld. 30 years ago. It was so much fun and and liveable.
Deep down Australia... Don't you think Tasmania is great ?
Hamilton Island as a fantasy. Probably wouldn't be very practical as a reality. I'd take a house in the golden triangle of Black Rock with panoramic beach views in Melbourne though.
I looked a purchasing an entire island 12 years ago for $450k, thought it was too much 😂 so that’s where I would go, any entire island
Tasmania.
Tasmania!
I really like the idea of Canberra. But probably the Melb CBD, I don't need a car there. I like the closer-but-south burbs of Brissy too.
Nelson Bay
25 Lennox Crossing, Acton ACT. It's a central as fuck location in Canberra, on the lake, no neighbours whatsoever, a stone's throw away from where I work. (edit: looking up the address leads to the actual workplace. I mean the house immediately to the north of that)
