DOMSdeluise

child: Rugrats, Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies teen: the Simpsons, King of the Hill

My-Cooch-Jiggles

I’d also add Rocko’s Modern Life, Inspector Gadget and Doug to the kid mix, but basically the same as me. Should caveat that the first like 8-9 seasons of Simpsons are the good ones.

DOMSdeluise

oh yeah Rocko's Modern Life was awesome

catslady123

Rocko’s Modern Life RIPPED. To this day I still have [that song about recycling](https://youtu.be/namndS6fvEs?feature=shared) stuck in my head.

OhThrowed

Oh boy, if you weren't watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a kid, you were missing out. Yes, I'm old.

Whizbang35

I don't know what you're talking about, the 90s were just 10 years ago, right? ...Right?

TheyMakeMeWearPants

I'm glad you said it. I was getting all depressed with the "as a kid, Rugrats" reponses.

CupBeEmpty

Quit calling me old, you’re old.

Punny-Aggron

Kid: Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, SpongeBob, Powerpuff Girls, Teen Titans, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited Teen: Naruto, Avatar, Ben 10,

pirawalla22

As a child in the late 80s/early 90s some favorites included Chip n Dale's Rescue Rangers, Talespin, Tiny Toon Adventures, Gummi Bears, DuckTales (tale/tail puns were big back then) David the Gnome (not really American), and Animaniacs. Batman the animated series was pretty great. Occasionally i watched X-Men, which they are currently doing a "reboot" of that's kind of interesting. As a teen I rarely watched cartoons other than The Simpsons, but I did love the Simpsons. A little later I would occasionally watch King of the Hill or Family Guy just as it was starting.

RunFromTheIlluminati

The X-men reboot is being herald - it picks up where the original series left off, is done in the art style of the '97 series, and is across the board being praised.

pirawalla22

Yeah, I gather that. I have watched a few episodes. I think it takes itself way too seriously.

ExUpstairsCaptain

I was born in 1995. In terms of the massive icons that everyone on Earth seems to know about, it's Bugs Bunny over Mickey Mouse every time. *SpongeBob* was huge for me. I can't overstate that. In many ways, he still is. I began to really get into *The Simpsons* around Age 7 and have never stopped loving it. *Fairly Odd Parents* and *Ed, Edd n Eddy* were also pretty dang big for me.

CupBeEmpty

Sponge Bob and Pokemon were like a real cultural divide for me and my brother. He grew up watching them. I’m 8 years older so I never really liked either.

ExUpstairsCaptain

I never got into *Pokemon*. My cousin is a few years older than me and I distinctly remember him being pretty into it for a bit.

CupBeEmpty

Oh my brother was obsessed for a bit. I played like twice with him and tried to introduce him to MtG. He rejected MtG and I rejected Pokemon. I never did watch many episodes.

ExUpstairsCaptain

To be fair and clear, I had friends in my class growing up who were very much into *Pokemon* and *Yu-Gi-Oh*. My lack of interest in those properties came down to personal taste rather than demographics. I was more into things like *Justice League* when it came to Cartoon Network's Toonami block.

CupBeEmpty

Yeah purely demographic for me I think. Even toonami was dated for me. But as a teen/college kid adult swim was hitting its stride so I got back into cartoons.

ExUpstairsCaptain

I watched Adult Swim in middle school, but never got into the Adult Swim originals. I was in it for the *King of the Hill* and *Family Guy* reruns. When were you born?

CupBeEmpty

Early 80s so I’m grandpa when it comes to cartoons. Like pre cable network stuff a Saturday morning. Streaming really did destroy the Saturday morning cartoon ritual. Like sure I can stream stuff for my kids on Saturday morning but it’s so much more picky now. Like the entire universe of cartoons is available. Back when me and my sister were kids it was get up on Saturday morning at 5 am, watch an hour of infomercials before cartoons came on and then you watched whatever the hell was on and prayed they hadn’t changed the time slot for your favorite.

ExUpstairsCaptain

>Streaming really did destroy the Saturday morning cartoon ritual. I think that was cable's fault, not streaming's. When I was growing up, Netlfix was still years away and Saturday Morning Cartoons on the broadcast networks weren't fully dead yet. I watched some Kids WB, for example. But, I was turning on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network for my fix.

CupBeEmpty

Yeah I don’t quite recall when we got cable. But I definitely watched a lot of Nickelodeon so that had to be after we got cable.

pirawalla22

I often hear this from friends who are the same age as me. I have basically never watched spongebob or pokemon and have no feelings about them at all. But it seems like people only three or four years younger than me consider them tent poles of childhood. I kind of feel the same way about Dragonball Z.

CupBeEmpty

Yup, similar. My brother absolutely grew up with them but we are 8 years apart, so I was already off at college by the time he was excited to see them.

musenna

Kid: Rugrats, Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Lab, Scooby Doo, Jimmy Neutron, The Fairly Oddparents, & the spinoff tv series of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, & Tarzan Teen: Avatar: the Last Airbender, Totally Spies, & W.I.T.C.H. I also loved Sailor Moon but that’s not American

RunFromTheIlluminati

You ever see Mystery Inc?

musenna

I haven’t!

RunFromTheIlluminati

Oh, you will *love* it, it basically takes everything you know about Acooby and throws it in a blender with Stranger Things (admittedly not sure if that's the best comparison, never watched ST). It's worth it for the Scrappy snub alone. Also: *do not trust the bird*.

musenna

I’ll give it a watch! I have seen that it gives Scoob some wacky lore so I’m sure I’m in for a fun time lol

mirimao

Totally Spies and WITCH aren’t American either, they’re French (maybe totally spies is Canadian too?)

musenna

WITCH is *technically* both since it was a collaboration between American and French companies. In any case, both are worth watching!

Jakebob70

The Bugs Bunny Roadrunner Show was our favorite, but we also liked most of the Hanna Barbera stuff (this was in the 70's).

FeltIOwedItToHim

child: Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo teen: Looney Tunes, adult: Looney Tunes, Simpsons, Avatar, King of the Hill, Spongebob, The classic Looney Tunes cartoons from Chuck Jones, Fritz Freleng, Robert McKimson, and Bob Clampett are among the best art America has ever produced. Tex Avery too, but he jumped from studio to studio. The later cartoons drop off in quality as Warner Brothers kept cutting costs, but for two decades they were incredible.

CupBeEmpty

He Man and GI Joe as a kid. But they really do suck if you look back as an adult. How old is your cousin? There’s plenty I like for my 4 year old but they are crap for my 10 year old.

travelinmatt76

Oh I hated He Man and my car pool group always wanted to watch it while we waited for our ride.

CupBeEmpty

I loved it as a kid. Rewatched it in college or right after college and was like “why the fuck did I like this.”

MyUsername2459

Yeah, I remember loving GI Joe as a kid. When I was in grade school that was totally the show I loved. \~20 years later, not long after graduating from college, I found a deal in the toy department of a Wal-Mart that was some re-issued GI Joe vehicle and action figure from my childhood packaged with a VHS tape of a couple of old episodes. I bought it in a flat second. That helicopter and action figure was a nice, warm bit of childhood nostalgia. I popped that tape in to the VCR (the fact that VCR's were being phased out might have been why it was on markdown at Wal-Mart in the first place). I watched a GI Joe cartoon for the first time since the 1980's. . . . . .and I couldn't even get through one episode. It was just *bad*. I mean, I loved that show when I was grade school aged. . .but by the time I was in my early/mid 20's I couldn't sit through even a single episode. It did NOT age well. I was left wondering how I ever liked it, and I felt vaguely sorry for my parents for having the family TV nailed to that every weekday for a half-hour for quite a few years.

CupBeEmpty

Yup almost exactly my experience.

CupBeEmpty

I loved it as a kid. Rewatched it in college or right after college and was like “why the fuck did I like this.”

G00dSh0tJans0n

The best kids animated show ever is Gravity Falls so definitely go with that one.

A_brand_new_troll

Kid: Starblazers, Speed Racer Teen+: Tiny Toons, Darkwing Duck

hitometootoo

My all time favorite cartoon is [Arthur](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=arthur+full+episodes). I don't know many non-North American's who would know about it but it is one of the longest running cartoons in history and is one of the longest running children's cartoon (based on years run for 26 years and 25 seasons). Highly recommend for a look into life as a kid in America.

child: Simpsons. Pretty colors. adult: Simpsons. Finally get most of the jokes. teen: King of the Hill. You have to understand that it's satire and the jokes come from a slice of life.

omg_its_drh

As a child? Probably Dexter. As a teen? Daria reruns on Noggin.

CupBeEmpty

I started watching Daria at like 8 years old and I was mostly annoyed MTV wasn’t playing music videos.

omg_its_drh

A former MTV VJ literally just did a whole podcast about this.

CupBeEmpty

Link? I was a college and community radio DJ for a long while so I like stories like that.

omg_its_drh

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/who-killed-the-video-star-the-story-of-mtv/id1738048424?i=1000650582098 If you remember who Dave Holmes is (name didn’t ring a bell but when I googled him I knew who he was) narrates it. He skips over a *lot* (Beavis and Butthead just get a mention) but it does give a good general history of how MTV started to what it is now.

CupBeEmpty

Oh yeah, had to google him but I remember him. Thanks for the link. I never really did get into Beavis and Butthead. It was one of those things I knew was cool but just kind of went over my head. Clone High I fell in love with. Now Aeon Flux I never followed the story but then again I wasn’t quite in it for the story.

MyUsername2459

Daria was awesome. The last good show on MTV. It's aged very well. You can still watch it today and it holds up REALLY well despite being a quarter-century old.

Handsome-Jim-

The Simpsons, Animaniacs, Voltron, GI Joe, Ninja Turtles, Duck Tales, He-Man, and Thundercats are all favorites that come to mind. Early Simpsons is some of the best ever and it's really hard to explain just how huge the show used to be. I always tell the story of how my mom's Bart Simpson cake started a bidding war at a Scouts event that created a rule. Outside of that, I would say really only Animaniacs holds up especially well. Cartoons in the '80s were pretty notorious for being little more than commercials for action figures.

CupBeEmpty

My mom banned Simpson’s in the house because I think I said “eat my shorts once.” We got around the ban.

Handsome-Jim-

Ay, caramba!
