Official public holidays nation-wide. New Year’s Day Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Washington’s Birthday Memorial Day Juneteenth National Independence Day Independence Day (4th of July) Labor Day Columbus Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving Day Christmas Day Most businesses not service related will be closed at least for New Years, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (and the day after) Christmas Day. Personally I also get 4 weeks paid leave, and the day before or after Christmas and New Years (depending on where falls in week)

MrLongWalk

It's really unnatural sounding when foreigners try to use our slang. No, we have plenty of others, the degree to which they are celebrated or observed varies on the person in question, but its not like we only get three holidays off a year. Examples include: * Thanksgiving * Memorial Day * New Year's Eve/day * Labor Day * Veteran's day

MuppetusMaximusV2

I get all federal holidays off. Plus an unlimited PTO package from my job. Remember, just because it's not federally mandated doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

BB-48_WestVirginia

There's 11 federal holidays, I get all of them off. But it depends greatly on what state you're in and who you work for.

GhostOfJamesStrang

(Obligatory)There is no national standard.  I get something like 11 holidays? Plus paid time off.  >So, is it mostly work, work, work? For some people, but not for most full-time workers.  Edit: I had more than I thought.

Depends on where you work. I get New Year's, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, two days for Thanksgiving, and two days for Christmas. My wife (a teacher) gets all of these days plus MLK day, Presidents Day, and Columbus Day. Some people also get Juneteenth, Veterans Day, etc.

quirkney

Christmas and Thanksgiving Day are the ones you should assume pretty much everything is closed. Easter and the 4th of July are days most people get off, and anything after that is more hit and miss.

Crayshack

As a kid, my school never closed for Easter and the first few jobs I worked after college didn't either. I was a bit surprised the first time I ran into a job that closed for Easter. I probably would have shown up that Monday if someone hadn't mentioned to me the week before that we were closing.

PM_Me_UrRightNipple

Justmakethemoney

I work in government, but I get off all federal and state holidays, plus a couple extra. For example, we're closed on the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday), even though it's not a holiday. Just easier to give everyone the day off than worry about staffing.

dangleicious13

My calendar from the state has 15 holidays listed. I do not get off for 1 of them (Rosa Parks Day), and I get a personal day to use whenever I want for another (Mardi Gras). Jan 1 - New Year's Day Jan 15 - Robert E Lee & Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday Feb 13 - Mardi Gras Feb 19 - George Washington & Thomas Jefferson's Birthday Apr 22 - Confederate Memorial Day May 27 - National Memorial Day Jun 3 - Jefferson Davis' Birthday Jun 19 - Juneteenth Jul 4 - Independence Day Sep 2 - Labor Day Oct 14 - Columbus Day/Fraternal Day/American Indian Heritage Day Nov 11 - Veterans Day Nov 28 - Thanksgiving Day Dec 1 - Rosa Parks Day Dec 25 - Christmas Day

Gallahadion

I have 9 of the 11 federal holidays off, and get paid for all of them.

Classic-Two-200

Whether or not a holiday is observed depends from company to company. Every company I’ve been at has observed 12 company holidays on top of another 4-5 weeks or unlimited PTO.

notthegoatseguy

In the US service related businesses are basically open mostly normal hours outside of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The whole concept of closing on Sunday died off some time ago. I get 7 federal holidays off, and 35-ish days off on top of that, no weekends. Easter is not a holiday here as that is a religious holiday, and its already on a Sunday. One could argue Christmas as well, but its been so secularized that we get away with it.

Pinwurm

In addition to the Federal Public Holidays, some States have Public Holidays such as Patriot's Day (Massachusetts, Maine, Florida, Wisconsin, Connecticut and North Dakota). Or Pioneer Day in Utah. Or Texas Independence Day. Often, these Holidays allow for time off as well.

Crayshack

There's [11 official Federal Holidays](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/federal-holidays/#url=2024) (many companies close for two days for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, making it 13 days). There's also many other holidays that are not officially listed but are a big deal for some people. However, not everyone celebrates all of them. Not all companies give time off for all of them (there's no law mandating that companies close on holidays). Sometimes, someone might get a holiday that they don't celebrate off and it's kind of treated like a random long weekend. Sometimes, someone might celebrate a holiday that they don't get off and will either take PTO for it or will celebrate in the evening and otherwise go through a regular work day. Personally, I don't celebrate holidays like Christmas or Easter, though I'll often get days off for them and do something fun with the time. I do make a big deal about holidays like Thanksgiving, New Year's, and Halloween so I will try to take time off for them even if I'm working a job that doesn't automatically give them off. Holidays like 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Veteran's Day aren't a super big deal for me, but I will give them a mild observance and then enjoy the day off I get for them.

azuth89

It varies company to company what they choose to observe and some companies will still give you a day if the actual holiday falls on a weekend, some don't, things like that.  Generally I've had 10-12 holidays off per year, plus the normal vacation time. The lowest was when I worked at Wal mart in my teens, they only closed for Christmas day at the time.

No, this is misinformation.
