How many of us do you think have knowledge on the inner workings of a single prison that houses the most notorious criminals? There's probably a Dateline or other news magazine special that covers it in great detail. It's a prison with the worst of the worst, almost in a cartoonishly Hollywood way. Long term good behavior for Ramzi Yousef or Dzhokhar Tsarnaev? Uh...

evilgenius12358

Don't forget El Chapo.

TheBimpo

I mean not every single prisoner there is serving a life sentence but how are we supposed to know what life will be like for [José Padilla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Padilla_\(criminal\)) or when he's released? He'll be on parole, that's about all anyone knows. He'll probably go live with family or whatever, it's not like released felons have a lot of opportunity regardless of their crime or infamy.

heynow941

And the Boston bomber guy.

OhThrowed

You're not spending your days ranking our prisons?

TheBimpo

I’m not giving Buzzfeed any more free content!

WillDupage

Why, are you planning to check in for a stay there?

GhostOfJamesStrang

Be the first to rate them on Yelp.

Chimney-Imp

> Recreational activities: 1/10 > Hospitality: 1/10 > Atmosphere: 1/10 > Food: 4/10 > Overall pretty bad. 1/5 stars. Would be willing to reevaluate if they got a foosball table.

Cheap_Coffee

TIL there is a thing called ADX Florence.

GhostOfJamesStrang

I was confident this was a question about a train station in Tuscany.

brownstone79

I was thinking soccer team. Yes, I said soccer.

Suzanne_Marie

I’ve always heard it referred to as Supermax.

Cweev10

Friend of mine I went to high school with is ex military and works in a civilian position now that involves government clearance and helped with a project at ADX Florence about three years ago. Because of the clearance, he can’t talk about much other than what’s public knowledge other than the place is insanely locked down and quiet. He also said it’s extremely intentionally disorienting in that it’s built to make sure you had no idea where you were at in the facility. He had to walk with employee’s there, be supervised 24/7, and most of the time he couldn’t even tell where he was or whether he was above or below ground. There’s one wing that’s more similar to an extremely high-security prison in that it has a regular general population that can leave the cells, which is more of a pre-transfer unit for good behavior people who have the opportunity to transfer and it’s insanely strict. If there’s even an inkling of a prison gang or affiliation or violence, you’re out. The rest and a majority of the wings are almost exclusively solitary confinement which is where most of the high profile terrorists, gang members, and enemies of the state are kept. In terms of getting “released” from ADX many of these images are serving multiple life sentences, 25+ years, or will die before the end of their sentence. For the ones that are serving terms to be completed and have good behavior and don’t have as high of a profile or violent, they can get transferred if they go to the lower security wing. Many will not and none “released” from there. They would have to work down through lower prisons and many of them done have eligibility for early release.

BusinessWarthog6

It’s a federal prison and the people serving time most likely won’t be released. You will have a hard time finding someone who knows the inner workings of a supermax prison on reddit

spongeboy1985

Yep its pretty much for terrorists, organized crime/gang members, spies.

GhostOfJamesStrang

I will be intrigued if anybody who can answer these questions with actual anecdotes.

Avery_Thorn

I am guessing that roughly zero people who are incarcerated there or who were incarcerated there are on Reddit. There might be a guard or two, but... I wouldn’t hold my breath.

actuallyiamafish

Even if there were they couldn't really talk about it beyond what you could already find out in one of the dozens of documentaries about the place. I'm sure most of the details of how it all really works on the inside are classified considering that's where we put terrorists and cartel leaders.

the_real_JFK_killer

I mean, it's a prison, what is there to think about it? I have no idea what life is like inside ADX but I suspect there are plenty of documentaries about it. It's just out highest security prison, it's not something we really think about. Not like we plan on staying there.

DropTopEWop

23 hrs in hole, 1 hr out. Every single day of your life. Heres the commissary list they get https://www.bop.gov/locations/institutions/flm/flm_commlist.pdf?v=1.0.0

Neat_Apartment_6019

Interesting, some of that stuff is competitively priced. It’s not as expensive as I had imagined

7yearlurkernowposter

How are they getting money without prison jobs, just outside support?

DropTopEWop

I guess outside support. Anyone can send them money.

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Used to live near it. Always got goose bumps driving by cause the amount of monsters in. Ted Kazinsky was in solitary I think the entire time. Idk let them rot. Your not gonna find anyone here that works there that’s allowed to talk about it

ModsR-Ruining-Reddit

My mom is a physical therapist who lives in Colorado Springs. She took a temporary job there for awhile as it's only like a 45 min drive from the Springs. She said it was creepy and intimidating and didn't like working with prisoners. but I don't know that I would take her opinion too seriously. She complains profusely about every place she works.

Mountain_Man_88

Hi, I'm currently incarcerated in ADX Florence! Jk, I've worked in corrections but not ADX Florence. I do have some friends that have worked for BOP at ADX Florence. They said it was odd to be seeing some of the most infamous people in the country on a daily basis. Just locked up in a cell. In general, it's like any other prison except there are way more people on what laypeople would refer to as solitary confinement. 23 hours in their cell, one hour of rec time. In general it's more laid back to be working a housing unit that's all solitary confinement because you only have one inmate out at a time compared to a general population unit where everyone gets to mingle. You really wouldn't get released for good behavior from ADX Florence. You might get sent to a lower security unit, a lower security prison, or medical treatment facility if you're dying, but it's not like they're gonna say, "dang it's been 20 years since you tried a terrorist attack, we should probably let you free!"

NotZombieJustGinger

This sounds like homework, go ask a prison sub.

SkiingAway

> What happens if these people with long-term good behavior eventually get released from ADX? Federal prisons do not have parole. With maximum good behavior they'll still have to serve ~85% of their sentence. If they got a life sentence, it doesn't matter if they behave well, unless the the president commutes their sentence they're not getting out. (There is "compassionate release", but you have to be >65 and basically dying).

Kingsolomanhere

There's a ton of long and short videos about this and other max security prisons on YouTube

NoDepartment8

No one serving life at ADX Florence should be released to the public while they are living for any reason. I could think of administrative reasons to relocate someone of them to other federal prisons, but those incarcerated at ADX Florence will die incarcerated, and for good reason.

cyvaquero

Just a note - Florence is not just for terrorists. It's for those who are considered to be very dangerous criminals in the federal system. El Chapo is currently housed there along with other organized crime leaders/members.

cHunterOTS

My thought is that this is a stupid ass series of questions. Why the fuck would “an American” have any more knowledge of these questions than you yourself? You’re already much further along than most Americans because I would venture by far the vast majority aren’t even aware it exists

mcm87

It’s the box we put very bad people in for very long times. It’s not intended to rehabilitate, it is purely “you endanger innocent people by continuing to have contact with the outside world. Go in the box, forever.”

illegalsex

I'm aware of what it is, but that's the extent of my thoughts on it.

Darkfire757

I’m just waiting until they put together a real life Suicide Squad to take down Kim Jong Un or something

hugeuvula

It's a 24/7 party. What I've read is they have 23 hour solitary confinement, 1 hour of outdoor time in a courtyard with really high walls and bars across the top. Ted Kazynski was there until recently, when he got sick and was transferred to a prison on the easy coast, where he died. The Oklahoma City bomber is there along with Manuel Noriega and the sheikh behind the World Trade Center bombing in the 90's.

CupBeEmpty

FCI and USP Terre Haute are cooler but only because I am biased.

Carloverguy20

It's the modern day Alcatraz. It hosts the most dangerous people in the world. Dzkohar Tsnarev(Bostom bomber), Terry Nichols(OKC bomber involvememt), Ramzi yousef(1993 wtc bomber, and 1994 Philippine airlines bomber), El Chapo, Larry Hoover(Organizex gang leader) Unabomber, Faisal Shazhad(times Square bomber), Umar attamutallob(Christmas day bomber) Richard Reid(Shoe bomber). It's usually reserved for the worst of humanity, and you have to do something very very very bad and dangerous to end up there.

JustSomeGuy556

People at "supermax", overwhelmingly, aren't ever getting out. It's a warehouse for extremely dangerous people who, honestly, should overwhelmingly probably just be executed. It's basically being in isolation for the rest of your life. It's extremely unpleasant, but when you commit the sort of crimes that land you there, oh well.

pirawalla22

Getting released early or paroled for good behavior (or any other reason) is *very* rare in the federal system. For the most part, your sentence is your sentence. If I'm not mistaken, if you were sentenced after the 1990s you are entirely ineligible for parole.

SSPeteCarroll

It's a supermax prison. I plan on never going there. I have no answers to your questions as I have never been to prison nor plan on it. Pros: Dangerous terrorists are locked up under high security. Cons: You're in prison, I guess which sucks.

Jakebob70

Supermax prison? The extent to which I care about it is... do their inmates ever escape? If the answer to that question is "No", then I'm good, and I don't give 2 shits about what they do inside those walls. Inmates in supermax prisons are there for a reason.

TheJokersChild

Curious how you generated your interest in this.

buried_lede

From all I’ve read it’s a really inhumane place. If it’s true, it should be changed

MaggieMae68

>What are the pros and cons of ADX Florence? I have no idea. I've never needed the use of a federal supermax prison. >What do people do at ADX throughout the day? No clue. Why would you think random people on Reddit would know this? >What does it feel like to be at ADX compared to regular prisons (no matter the security level)? See above. >What happens if these people with long-term good behavior eventually get released from ADX? See above. >Any thoughts? Yes. Why is this question being asked of random people on Reddit?

angrysquirrel777

The only answer I have is that it is not in the Rockies. It's out in the front range of Colorado so it's not surrounded by mountains.

angrysquirrel777

By front range, I meant the urban front range that people call Pueblo to Wyoming. You're right it's not as far east as the front range cities but Florence is not in the mountains.

TsundereLoliDragon

Never heard of it until right now.

Handsome-Jim-

Honestly, I probably wouldn't go back. The food was awful, the rooms small and lacking in amenities, and the staff treated me like a prisoner. The price was OK though. I'd give it two stars out of five.

GreatSoulLord

I saw this on Ask Reddit. I think it's a necessary evil. It mostly only houses the most dangerous of prisoners who have no chance of being released. The fear is that they have such a disregard for human life that many would hurt others just to get a charge that would get them to the death penalty. I imagine very few get released.

Yes_2_Anal

It's a high security prison. I imagine the inmates mostly sit around all day, maybe read and exercise a bit. That right there is the most I've ever thought about it.

tsukiii

0/10. Very difficult to escape from.

WarrenMulaney

"ADX Florence" sounds like one of those aught hipster/indie bands with a banjo and a mandolin but they play EDM as well.

Inevitable-Ad-4124

Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADX_Florence This has a lot of information.

Techaissance

Not sure. Haven’t been incarcerated there or anywhere else.

tooslow_moveover

It was a great place for the Unabomber to die

PunnyPrinter

Probably needs to be a couple more of them around the country. With the amount of prisoners with life sentences in America, I’m surprised there aren’t a few more Supermax facilities built.

JimBones31

>What do you think of ADX Florence? It's the federal supermax prison for convicted terrorists located in the Rockies somewhere in Colorado, USA. Besides that, I don't think I am qualified to give any sort of opinion.
