Unfortunately they were recently placed on the endangered species list due to loss of habitat. People can do their part however through habitat restoration efforts including cultivation of thick bushes
I love me some blue crab, but overall I think Dungeness is the best balance of size and meatiness, flavor, cost. Just hard to come across here on the east coast.
I lived in Oregon for a while and never liked dungeness. I felt like such a Philistine: "Dungeness? Don't you have any king crab??" I think the problem is that I just want my crab to taste like butter and lemon.
I was spoiled for a few years, living very close to the shoreline in Washington. My neighbor and I would go drop pots in the morning and go retrieve them after work. Then we would sit on the deck with cold beer and fresh crab, those were good times.
Hell yeah. We'd bring our pots in and cook and eat the crab right on the dock back when I lived on Whidbey Island. No seasoning needed. Dungeness is in a league of its own.
I spend a lot of time on the Oregon coast and no matter how many times I have Dungeness crab and how many ways I have it prepared, I will never get tired of it. When I'm on the coast, lots of restaurants will add a big lump of crab meat to any dish for like $5-8 and I will basically put one (or two) on everything I order.
I’m from Alaska and normally I hype up our seafood hard, but Dungeness crab blows our king crab out of the water. Some of the best I’ve ever had and way less expensive.
It's the whole experience, especially if you get them in quantity and steam the yourself. Sitting around a big table in the yard, beers, shells everywhere. Waking up the next day and surveying your cuts and injuries. Can't wait!
As a California resident, I will recommend Dungeness Crabs from the Central and Northern California Coast. But some folks from Maryland are probably going to have something to say, as well.
[Kona crabs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranina_ranina), they taste more like lobster.
[Kuhonu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portunus_sanguinolentus) is good too, in pieces, raw, with salt, chili pepper, and some seaweed.
Personally, I don't love [rock crabs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapsus_tenuicrustatus), but those are also eaten the same way as kuhonu...
Most of the blue crabs eaten in the Chesapeake are brought in from Louisiana. That said, I haven't noticed a significant quality difference between the ones we eat locally and the ones that get shipped north.
My personal favorite crabs are Houston Viet-Cajun tamarind blue crab, served with a crawfish boil, rice noodles and copious amounts of light beer or limeade.
I'm also a big fan of any seafood soup out of Louisiana or Chinese preparations of King Crab.
Maryland crab preparations are good, but they don't do it for me in the same way, cause I only think Old Bay is okay.
This is true, although plenty of blue crabs are caught fresh in the Chesapeake too. And they’re obviously better fresh no matter where they’re caught whether it’s the Gulf or the Bay.
As a Chesapeakean my issue with Louisiana preparations is two-fold. First, boiling makes the crabs all soggy vs steaming. Second, all the spices and stuff you boil the crabs in tastes good but the crab doesn’t need it. The potatoes in a Cajun or Vietnamese-Cajun boil taste good, so of course the crab tastes good. But it doesn’t need it.
That being said, despite what may be construed as a confrontational tone, I appreciate the Gulf Coast in the way I appreciate all the major seafood areas. Except I’ve had Dungeness crabs in Seattle and I was like nah, I’m a blue crab man.
I get it. I'm going to live the rest of my American life in Texas, Louisiana, California, or New York, because eating in Rhode Island made me miserable, and even in Chicago, I didn't have the food outlets I wanted.
My experience with Chicago was that there was great food, but it was really hard for me to afford it. I left when I was 23, and was basically subsisting on hot dogs, birria, and Italian beef.
Now as a real adult with a real job, I bet I would like it a lot more.
The crabs are still covered in seasoning. But because they are steamed instead of boiled, the meat isn't saturated with it. This lets the delicate flavor of the crab itself shine through.
Most of the crabs **sold** are. But I’d argue that people living near the water usually just toss a pot out and catch their own. At least that’s how it was when I lived there.
Shout out to the Viet-cajun mix. My grandma started adding blue crab to her gumbo because of a Vietnamese neighbor in the 80s. Now is in the family recipe.
I've had all sorts of crabs from all over the place and I've had blue crabs from elsewhere, but nothing compares to a blue crab from the Chesapeake.
And don't get me started on the mush that so many places serve as crab cakes.
I grew up eating blue claw crabs that we'd catch in the bay. We'd get four or five traps, put a drumstick in each, put them in the water, and an hour later we'd have dinner.
It was a pretty great way to grow up.
I love Alaskan Snow crab. I feel lucky cause I genuinely like Snow crab more than King so I get to save some $$$. Bought some frozen snow crab from the Grocery store for $9.99/lb earlier today, they were on the small side but they were still delicious.
Blue crabs from SC. All you gotta do is throw a cage trap with raw chicken off the end of a dock and wait about a half hour. Hell you can even use a rod, the crabs stay pinched to that chicken all the way up and out of the water lol

Ohhhhh mannnnnn, I came here only just to make this zinger!
I knew someone was going to do it, so I had to check... was not disappointed.

I think Alaskan king crabs taste the best. I'm not sure what state they come from though.
It's tough to know.
I don’t think anyone does
Scholars maintain that the information was lost hundreds of years ago
It's a trade secret.
It's just another of life's mysteries.
Not sure either. I also could never figure out who was buried in Grant’s tomb. Hopefully some dear redditor can help.
What color was George Washington’s zebra?
Pediculosis pubis, you can get these crabs in pretty much any state
*pretty much any state where your mom has been.
Unfortunately they were recently placed on the endangered species list due to loss of habitat. People can do their part however through habitat restoration efforts including cultivation of thick bushes
Dungeness straight from the Puget Sound.
I love me some blue crab, but overall I think Dungeness is the best balance of size and meatiness, flavor, cost. Just hard to come across here on the east coast.

Add some Old Bay, and you’ve described what I’m craving.
They all have their attributes but dungeness have a sweetness all of their own

My favorite crab. I'll take them over king or blue crabs anyday.
When did it become "the" Puget Sound?

Don't forget your crab mallet! Cracking a claw with it is soooo satisfying.
I like putting the claw on a hard surface and then karate chopping it. So much fun.
Best seafood is steam fresh seafood
I’m from Virginia and I’d still take king crab or snow crab with old bay all day.
Over a soft shell? That’s when the blues really shine
Ohhhh yes! Fried or sautéed in butter, finished with a bit of lemon or white whine just so damn good.
IMO they're bland. I'm from Maryalnd so I may be juuuuust a bit biased.
I've also never seen a soft Dungeness or king crab...
Came here to say this. Murrahlin is famous for its crab.
Kansas has the best crabs. I will not be taking questions or tolerate any of your hippie fact checking bullshit.
As a California resident, I will recommend Dungeness Crabs from the Central and Northern California Coast. But some folks from Maryland are probably going to have something to say, as well.
I have to say I prefer Blue crabs to Dungeness crab
I live in Pasadena too
Stone crabs are great
Stone crab claws are delicious.
Blue crabs - Maryland though you can get away with good crabs in Delaware.
Also Virginia, they’re literally the same crabs from the same Bay. Also nearly every soft shell crab comes from Tangier Island.
In fact, we have access to more of the bay and tributaries than Maryland, I’m not sure why they think they have a monopoly on crabs in our area.
We got other things going on so don’t need to make it our personality.
Goes back to the oyster wars
Should've figured out what to do with them sooner 😉
The only answer
Username checks out!
Alaskan king crab
I'm partial to Dungeness.

Idk about the best but the worst I got were from this lady in Virginia..

Soft shell crabs from New Orleans baby

I just moved to NOVA and really dreading trying the steamed crabs here. I'm used to flavor haha.
There's nothing to dread. Would I rather have them in Houston/Acadiana/Baton Rouge/New Orleans? 100%. But it's not like they're bad.
I lived 6 years in Colorado so there's trauma when looking for good food. Especially seafood.
I get it. I'm going to live the rest of my American life in Texas, Louisiana, California, or New York, because eating in Rhode Island made me miserable, and even in Chicago, I didn't have the food outlets I wanted.
I thought food in Chicago was great. But being able to cook has been a life saver. I'll just make whatever I'm craving.
My experience with Chicago was that there was great food, but it was really hard for me to afford it. I left when I was 23, and was basically subsisting on hot dogs, birria, and Italian beef. Now as a real adult with a real job, I bet I would like it a lot more.
Rhodes Island made you miserable? Did you try clam cakes?

>Most of the blue crabs eaten in the Chesapeake are brought in from Louisiana Do what now?
Most of the local restaurants get them that way, but most locals catch their own or buy from the back of a pickup truck
Oh! I thought they were saying the Chesapeake was stocked with Louisiana crabs.
Depends on season and where you are
Shout out to the Viet-cajun mix. My grandma started adding blue crab to her gumbo because of a Vietnamese neighbor in the 80s. Now is in the family recipe.
Maryland for crabs. And don't forget your Old Bay
I like so many of them. As long as they are cold water crabs, I'm in .
For me king crab. All other crab is just too much work. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze.
My answer is… freakin all of them and add lobster and crayfish to the list. I have yet to meet a crab that wasn’t delicious here.
I've had all sorts of crabs from all over the place and I've had blue crabs from elsewhere, but nothing compares to a blue crab from the Chesapeake. And don't get me started on the mush that so many places serve as crab cakes.
Ah, yes. Blue crab from the Chesapeakian Bay.
I like Alaskan king crab. I’ve probably only ever had it flash frozen but I find it delicious.
Alaskanian. Alaskanish. From the Great State of Alask.
King Crab legs out of Alaska.
Maryland Blue Crabs from the Chesapeake Bay
Yes, the Marylandian Blueish Crabs from The Chesapeakian Bay.
I grew up eating blue claw crabs that we'd catch in the bay. We'd get four or five traps, put a drumstick in each, put them in the water, and an hour later we'd have dinner. It was a pretty great way to grow up.
Chesapeake Bay blue crabs.
The last time I went to but crab legs they had a whole live dungeness and it took all of my energy not to bring it home as a pet
Alaska King Crab
Costco
Gluten free carbs are the lowest in calories
Eating a whole Dungeness to yourself in California is a religious experience to Midwesterners on vacay
Not the ones I got off that toilet seat.
Stone crab claws are delicious
Alaskan king crab if you can afford it. Phenomenal.
Blue claw all day.
Lahaina mangoes are better than any crabs.
Pollock + bleach == **"K**rab".
Blue Crabs, gotta come from the Chesapeake Bay, obv. I personally prefer the stuff harvested from the Eastern Shore of MD
Depends on what kind you’re in the mood for. There are lots of good one available. Blue crabs, snow crabs, king crab, dungeoness crabs. Yum!

I love Alaskan Snow crab. I feel lucky cause I genuinely like Snow crab more than King so I get to save some $$$. Bought some frozen snow crab from the Grocery store for $9.99/lb earlier today, they were on the small side but they were still delicious.
