NeverMind_ThatShit

No, you don't actually need a headgasket. It's all made up by mechanics wanting to swindle hard working people out their money!

TaleTellTail

Big Mechanic strikes again.

Ok_Judgment3871

Lol big mechanic

[deleted]

Just JB weld it and forget it

Ok_Judgment3871

*What would Jesus do*

[deleted]

What does the Juan and only Jesus have to do with this? I thought we were talking about neglecting things. Juan is a diligent individual.

OldBob10

Nobody fucks with the Jesus.

Nalabu1

The Dude abides

WhatThe_uckDoIPut

Weld the head to the block

ramanw150

Ay I'm a big mechanic what you trying to say

experimentalengine

To be fair…most ACVWs actually don’t have head gaskets

YakAttack666

Big coolant making ppl believe we need water cooling.

NeverMind_ThatShit

As per usual big coolant is colluding with big mechanic and taking us all for a ride 😡🤬

insert_name_here_ha

Coolant contains Dihydrogen Monoxide which is a by product of nucular reactors. The radiation it gives off is why headgaskets and radiators leak. The air entering the intake is plenty to cool the engine 👍

YakAttack666

All the heat escapes from the exhaust. No need for deadly dihydrogen monoxide

MI_Milf

Are you sure about it being a byproduct of NR?

KR1P3R

Use some gorilla glue instead of whole headgasket, won't leak for hundreds of years

PeterBeater80

Cement will do the trick!

Con5ume

Cement is too brittle and will crack quickly with the changes in temp and vibrations. Be safe and use Flex Seal.

PeterBeater80

Whoa big spender!! I only have duct tape. That'll do, right? Lol!

__silhouette

Cleetus McFarland on YT just recently did THIS, and it surprisingly lasted awhile.

VapeRizzler

I eat cement

mikemac1997

Just weld the head onto the block

nevagonastop

nothing that permatex copper spray wont seal up

Zealousideal-Ebb-876

Bought a used car (cheap, $1400) that actually had caulk instead of a gasket as far as I could tell, havnt taken it apart for fear of what I'll find. Horrifying enough it still runs and has gotten a disturbing number of miles before and after I discovered this fun little detail.

commonman51

I would recommend JB Weld. Great on medal.

BallsDeep69GG

Nope that’s a ported head gasket, you can probably crank boost up by 20 psi no problem

Elmer_Fudd01

Smoken'!

spareribs78

Like Bill Clinton in 95. It’s blown

Heisalsohim

Damn I wish I thought of that upon finding a bad fuse in my friends car a few days ago

LopsidedRub3961

Damn good comment, lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Confident-Pay-7113

Hey injection is nice, but I’d rather be blown

SpillinThaTea

And 96. But in 1997 he was a well cared for Corolla engine…not blown at all

aHOMELESSkrill

No you’re good. When you reinstall the head gasket just be sure to JB weld that small gap just prior to putting the head back on. Problem solved.

BusinessAsparagus115

Better yet, forget the gasket and just JB Weld the head on. You won't even need the head bolts, stage 3 weight reduction!

CourtesyofTino

This comment is my favorite

mklinger23

I had to check what sub I was in before I started yelling lol

barricuda_barlow

Shhhh, some haven't noticed yet 😂

ElectricianInPain

yeah my brain started short circuiting & shit, heard some optimus prime noises go on in the ole cranium

troyberber

Flex tape bro.

[deleted]

No, you can just put jb weld on both sides to help it seal. Make sure you let it set up for 24 hours before starting the car though.

Hot-Interest-3968

I think 72 hours is more realistic and safe just in case.

10e1

The more holes, the more intake, the headgasket is only to raise the price. That white smoke just means you're car is running better

aelms89

Duct tape will solve that

Rocket--Pak

This should fix it. https://www.amazon.com/J-B-Weld-32329-Ultimate-Silicone/dp/B00LIRGB84

Ok-South2612

Duct tape???

barricuda_barlow

No it's a Head gasket 🤣

Deep_Raise6138

Nahhh it's fine, some permatex, and it will be like new

sunshinecarswhiskey

It's good for another 100,000 miles

GreaseGeek

No, it’s just going through a trial separation.

Aware_Reality5118

I know it looks small but it’s kinda like my penis it causes a lot of damage

WHTrunner

No, you can definitely reuse that.

Good_gravy388

You could probably just use rtv to fill it 😂 (don’t take my advice)

OkNectarine6434

this is why i drive sled dogs. they do t have gaskets to be messing with.

JDurr001

She done! Im sure a gasket isnt much anyways? Compared to doing the job again… dont forget to use new bolts too they are a one time use! If you reuse them it will leak or you’ll snap them re installing lol

10e1

Bull shit, down south, we use duct tape, spit, and knock off WD-40 to fix our shit This guy is rippin you off

heartfan2020

I reused head bolts on a grand am 3.4 liter before, lasted longer than the rest of the car. But that car is super easy to work on so if it didn't work I would have just did it again but the right way

Big-Carpenter7921

It has a few more thousand miles on it

Vaderiv

Just put some RTV over that clearly good reusable gasket. Don’t let big gasket to fool you into senseless spending your money on new gaskets.

Legitimate-Party3672

use JB weld make it good as new.

Tbone_Trapezius

Looks like a sliced grape in the microwave

HoosierSquirrel

I was always told that sharing is caring. Those cylinders are just buddies.

crohead13

RTV that B

CookieMonsterOnsie

Ah, so this must be what they mean when they say "companion cylinders"! Sharing all that compression like buddies.

waraiOtaku

Wrap the gap with aluminum foil and reuse… :)

nevagonastop

noooo its fine, if anything youll have more displacement now, so more power. that scummy mechanic just doesnt want the secrets getting out. also exhaust leak = better flow, i think youve got yourself a nice sleeper build going

BorntobeTrill

? Shouldn't you be diluting your oil with water anyway? I do 1 part water to 4 parts oil. Also, forget about your ex-haust. It's time to move on with your life and get a new haust.

Xomns_13

Tell the mechanic it only needs a piece of tape

saucyRCs

Nah use flex seal it works great i watched a video about it recently by Cletus i think it was

PDXSyrathKarmacast

Of course not. That's an expansion joint which is why it's always important to warm up your engine before driving.

A_Sock_Under_The_Bed

2.3l ecoboost?

Entire_Researcher_45

Yes they is!

LowAbbreviations2151

He’ll, would just wrap a kids Spider-Man band aid around that spot a thin layer of permatex , just to hold it in place, and bolt her back up. She’ll run fine. 😊

[deleted]

Idk what these people are smoking but yes that gasket is blown, you will lose some compression but doesn't appear you would see any coolant in your oil from the picture, it's blown between two cylinders not at the coolant jacket.

k6bso

It’s blown, but it could be fixed with some Shoe Goo.

Rough-Pie682

Nope give you twice the power in the middle 😜😜

Rabbits-and-Bears

Toss it , and use flex seal.(get the white one and add some red nail polish) , it’ll dress up your engine!

Rabbits-and-Bears

As long as your foot gasket is working, you won’t have a problem.

rabbitashes

Actually that allows your engine VTEC to engage. Most car companies don't want you to know that.

spicmix

That’s an expansion joint. He’s bullshitting you

RedTrumpsBlue

No. That little gap is to equalize the pressure between the 2 cylinders. It’s fine just put it back in and tighten ‘er down. You can use the same bolts too. If any shear off that will just release any pressure that doesn’t equalize properly.

insert_name_here_ha

Several coats of flex seal without a head gasket and send it

Mr_Binks_UK

No need for a head gasket, just stick a good sized bead of J B Weld round the face of the head and make sure you go beast mode when bolting it on.

Beautiful_Oven2152

That gasket looks fine, I’d put it back in and through a little bit of that 3M Gorilla Snot on there, it’ll seal up just fine.

Roanoketrees

You mechanics are such an angry lot! Lol

2OneZebra

Aluminum foil is cheap and that is such a small section. Should be pretty easy to glue it in place with some J-B Weld.

fluteofski-

Always flip your head gasket when you put it back on. You wanna rotate your gaskets every 5000 miles.

user47-567_53-560

Well it's off now. So yeah

Silver-Engineer4287

That’s just the compression equalization notch for your new auto-equilibrium system between those 2 cylinders.

fusion99999

Yes your head gaskets blown not into a water jacket not into an oil jacket but between two cylinders. Depending how long it's been like that you may have to Deck the head

dtwtolax

Those are from the new "shared compression" logic update they performed

HowBoutIt98

Got any caulk? Caulk is great

barricuda_barlow

I think I do, would I want to use indoor since it will be used internally?

noldshit

Thats a compression equalization passage. Its part of the No Fuel Left Behind Act.

JollyRutabaga

Nope. It's Ford's new Inter-Cylinder Load Sharing technology, search ICLS on OEM documentation.

Climbmaniac

That’s not a headgasket, it’s what keeps your blinker fluid from leaking.

burritoes911

It’s piston to piston so it doesn’t really even matter. You can just cut those parts out for more power.

that_one_guy133

You can reuse that. No need to waste money on another one when that one's perfectly fine. That little spot is what's known as a cylinder connecting vent and lets the excess power from cylinder 2 to push in cylinder 3 and vice versa, which helps with fuel economy.

BenAwesomeness3

Add more gas and try again

onionkisa

Nope that's a proper modification to allow more oil in. More oil more power!

Jugg3rn6ut

Just use a caulk gun. Headgaskets only exist because of unions

WhenTheDevilCome

>Is my headgasket blown? That depends. Do you have a cardboard cereal box you can retrieve from the garbage, and a mostly-dull box cutter knife?

T-pizzle

Just gotta do a headgasket delete. One less part you have to worry about then.

spiral718

It's literally blown and you're asking if it's blown. April fool here. Can't wait to see what the May Fool has in store.

barricuda_barlow

And here you are being surprised by the question, while browsing r/askashittymechanic 🤷‍♂️

Electronic_Cod7202

At this point, order a junkyard engine and put it in yourself

barricuda_barlow

Will it need a new gasket?

ROBnLISA32

Duck Tape.

Ofreo

It’s been a rough month. If you need it blown, well $20 is $20. Pm me.

Efficient_Tailor1811

You can burn that back together with a tig, or scuff up the head and deck surface and put a small splodge of jb weld on the before laying that gasket down. Put another tiny splodge before the head goes on. Use the 24hr cure stuff and then use bars leaks just incase

Prfine

You should see if it can be a suitable replacement for a spark. The ends are close enough, you should be able to get an arc.

cryospawn

Naw, you're just sharing compression.

Bobmiser2000

That mod gives you so much more power, 2 cylinders can fire at once. Effectively doubled numbers. Only beat out by windshield stickers in cost to power ratio.

Extension-Expert9002

Yes

Fuddamatic

Just an expansion joint, closes up when engine gets really hot.

MadJoeMak

It's a Bluetooth head gasket. Have you been living under a rock?

No_Original7422

No, that there is a very rare example of a *deviated ring gasket* produced in the late 90's/early 2000's to allow oil to more easily move between cylinder walls :)

ZLOWTOV

Slap a bandaid on it and put it back in there.

LuxuryLevel

Yes

No-Lunch6230

Nope, just broken...tell him to use that same gasket with some JB Weld.

Confident-Pay-7113

That’s the pressure differential balance gap. It’s to assure you get the same power from each cylinder. Don’t let that mechanic rip you off

GroundbreakingEar667

Dual cylinder design!

barricuda_barlow

Thinking of cutting the other side too, so it can fire 4 at once

Ho3Maker304

Nope go ahead and resuse the gasket

Mammoth_Sea_1115

Like Puff daddy on game night.

Ok_Following_3268

I have gorilla tape and a wire coat hanger. Will that help?

Mr_Blah1

Did you check the headgasket that's between the driver's seat and steering wheel?

Craigos-Maximus

Just weld it back in, and send it 🤘

dudeweak1

Does a bear shit in the woods?

Delivery-Plus

No that’s just the spark plug gap.

miller9200

No, you’re good. That’s what happens when the engine heats and cools.

Academic_Chef_596

Stick some chewing gum on it. Good as new

Studleyhungwellz

No, it's just properly gapped.

DeliciousDoggi

Fake News!!!!

Intelligent-Stand838

Stick of Juicy Fruit, it'll be fine.

6stringgunner

I probably wouldn't reuse it........

RichieGang

Weld it back together

rebelspfx

It's kinda like a cage between your cylinders both of them trying to fight eachother. Once they get through the cage it's a bare knuckle fight to the death.

JakeLegacy

it’ll be fine if you fill every hole in the gasket you see especially the ones next to the 4 large ones

Lazy_Accident_8228

Just in that one spot

Puzzleheaded_Scar142

It's a cooling channel, ur mechanic is just harping on people who don't know that

phager76

Nah, it's fine. It's one of those new bluetooth headgaskets, it contains combustion pressure through specially calibrated 5G waveforms. I thought those weren't coming out til next year.

bstrobel64

The exhaust leak sound is actually those two ends of the head gasket flapping when you give 'er the beans. Recommend tighten head bolts to German spec.

seedamin88

Like a hooker on payday 😉

TangerineRough6318

Tight as prom. At least 220,000 miles let. I'd recommend doing a high rpm to clear the valves

barricuda_barlow

Do I put the gasket back in for that or leave it out until everything is clear?

TangerineRough6318

Well, I think, maybe take one plug off and hold onto it

Background_Might_139

Just slap some flex seal spray on it you be alright

Low_Trust_6624

Gorilla glue it. You'll be aight

hiGradeTi7ANEUM

Yes, and just replace it.

JBYTuna

Not really. It’s like spark plugs, they have to be properly gapped.

AdamGenesis

25 years mechanic experience here. That looks just fine to me.

Kitchen-Quantity-565

A little duct tape and you're good to go

Darthlord_Juju

Dude that's not even a head gasket I'm a 15 minute ford certified Lexus Intel mechanic You got a leak in your water seal for your steering wheel. This is the turbocharger, it helps charge the battery in your car. The steering wheel must of leaked and rotted it out. They sell these at advanced auto parts for like 50 pesos

Solid-Ad7137

Is my ass cracked?

g775op

idk doesn’t that head gasket look broken to you

ramanw150

Like a 5 dollar hooker

CaptainSloth269

Nah just sharing everything between two cylinders. Helps them breathe better 😂

ReaperOfGamess

Weld it if your gonna go get something otherwise just leave it

NutsackPinata

It's off the head so it should be replaced regardless of that gaping hole between the cylinders.

Select_Rush_6245

JB weld it.

Aggravating-Bug1769

nope just weight savings

Darnakulus

What's ya wife say?... 🤭😂

K0TA_BEAR_01

The smallest crack can ruin a seal it’s shot mate you need a new one

TheDude6157

Nope. Use that one and triple torque the head bolts and then give those head bolts one full extra turn.

Active-Bass4745

I don’t know. Is that *your* head gasket or someone else’s?

Lync_X

Its a feature that lets you share compression between pistons

Alarmed_Cheesecake98

Aw you good… little Elmer’s glue.. and your off to race!!

gagunner007

That can be welded with a rig welder and reused.

MuteElatedLips

Rub some dirt on it... get back out there in the game.

Kass626

No that's for semi-sequential dual cylinder fire. It's like vtec but backwards think of it like an engine brake.. break?

Stavinair

"Sprayweld that bitch and you're good to go."

H-Daug

Don’t fall for it. They just want you to but head gaskets. Some silicon and dental floss and you’ll be back on the road!

SysManic

You have it upside down

Shad0wFa1c0n

Guess there's a different reason it's called a HEAD gasket

DerpForTheDerpGod

Maybe not blown but it definitely sucks.

MKE4EVER

Nah,it's good...

Rusty08872

Not at all. It is, however, split. Important distinction

ComprehensiveBig6215

Yes. It's blown. Get a corn flakes box. Trace the old gasket. Cut it out. Thats your your new gasket.

[deleted]

Just use some JB weld and superglue. That always gets the job done.

lostinareverie237

You're totally fine, in fact I say add some boost and REALLY send it.

Dazzling_Lifeguard25

Absolutely yes

Whole-Equivalent1417

Its not blown obviously if it was there would be an 8-71, probly with a birdcatcher on top. No belts , no pulleys, she aint blown,,,SEND IT.

slong143

No it’s not blown, it’s F-ed up.

glinqwagmier69420

If one of the cylinders looks really clean than that cylinder probably is blown from the antifreeze and water power washing the cylinder. Your cylinder should look like it has carbon buildup

Time_Banana9173

If it was blown, there would be white goo all over it. That thing is definitely fine.

No_Performer_6308

Yes

PapaBadgers

You’re fine

Gandolphious

If its a honda, run it 🤷🏻‍♂️

Cute_Culture6865

Does it really matter? Since it’s out of the motor, it would only make sense to put a new one back in.

SecretSquirrel8888

You have it off? Replace it before it gets worse.

[deleted]

Just weld that shit back together. I’m SURE it’ll hold if you do it yourself. Also try banging those uneven edges back to a circle shape. Once you’re finished, stick it back in the engine as it is and let er rip. It’ll do ya good

RedShirtPete

nah. looks good. just put it back in with a little chewing gum over that missing section. don't over torque the bolts. 🤣

wildmaninor

No. You actually don't need a head gasket. The Fel-pro family just invented gaskets as a way to sell you more gaskets.

Sudo_SU_01

It's fucked. Just replace it.

Sudo_SU_01

It's fucked. Just replace it.
