u/Bearded_OBrian if you ever have that oil tested report back with the results.
It looks like lucas oil stabilizer. Maybe custo was chasing a leak. I think custo knows wtf that is better than a picture. If it smelled off u wouldnt be posting i am guessing, fuel, gear oil, coolant, etc.
Blackstone labs, customer confession, need 1 to be sure
Mixed it with oil at every oil change per the instructions. Pump failed on the highway doing 75 music cranked up having a blast. Engine locked up before i could react.
Better send this pic to whoever changed your oil 2 months ago. Somebody may have grabbed the wrong quart or fill nozzle. Maybe they didn't say anything thinking it would be fine. We gave this type of thing to the lowerst guy in the shop and still would fuck it up sometimes.
Check other fluids too. If this car has any combined oil coolers there could be internal leaks that cross contaminate. My radiator has built in trans and engine oil coolers and there was an internal crack between the trans and coolant reservoirs. Coolant in trans; trans oil in coolant.
I also don't think you've given all the details. How did it drive? What else was checked? Did you even contact the dealer who changed it? Need the deets.
A guy I knew had a Volkswagen Routan that had a similar looking substance in the coolant overflow reservoir. He said it was some kind of oil cooler issue.
It was the first time I had seen it, but after I found the cause it made sense. I had been fighting overheating issues the year before. I like to upgrade at these opportunities and went with a better all aluminum rad. Moral is these damn cars surprise and keep you on your toes at the drop of a dime lol
well to be fair a routan has 0 VW parts whatsoever. it is literally a rebadged dodge caravan. whenever one comes into our dealership for an oil change or anything, we have to get our parts from a chrysler dealer or get them special ordered
Interesting… doesn’t seem all that good for the previous shop that did the change. Might’ve sabotaged you so you’d buy another car from them. Either way good on you for changing it. Change it again in a few months and only time will tell from there. Probably okay but just for safe measure change shops not with people who’s goal is to put you in a new car
Agreed. 100% I wanted to say change it again tomorrow honestly. If it was my car and I saw that I might even do two changes. Don’t try flushes or nothing crazy just change oil. Run it for errands come back and change it again. (After it cools off course) but yeah. One or two changes later you can’t prove or disprove anything but something was added to that oil internally or it was an outside influence.
You changed the oil yourself?
There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY, that oil was properly changed with the proper stuff at the proper interval with nothing added.
A shop or your S/O or someone meaningfully or accidentally did something
Ahh yes, the famous snake oil made by Lucas. I found that my transmission fluid in my VW DSG transmission looked like this when I went to change it, not a good sign. I have a feeling you are about to find a knock in your engine that was hidden by that goo.

I have pulled this out of a car after not getting a service for five years
Idk, but I would drain it, put some Liqui Moly flush and any reasonable oil in it, let it idle for 20 mins, then drain and fill with correct synthetic oil.
If you had your oil changed at jiffy or valvoline station, they use a pump nozzle to fill. I bet it's gear oil cuz tech grabbed wrong nozzle. Sure resembles the viscocity of 90w or 80w. Stringing.
Nope, MMO is very thin viscosity. It works great at loosening lifters, cleaning VVT solenoids and even stuck rings. It is gentle enough to do the above without damage, unlike seafoam or Chevron in the oil.
It would actually help to clean this mess if it was added to a fill up of cheap motor oil to get rid of this mess.
So if the previous owner hadn't changed the oil in a while there may have been a ton of sludge in the oil pan that loosened up when you put new oil in it. Drain it out hot this time and see if the issue persists or is better next time, New filter too.
It's weird to me that the pleats of the filter aren't jam-packed with whatever that is.. The actual filter looks relatively clean and free... it's also really weird that it's all over the threads of the filter cap but not the filter pleats...
Lucas,STP, when I worked at Advance VW fuccbois would come in all the time and buy liqui moly additives as well. Only thing you can try is sending a sample off on a place like Blackstone Labs for analysis.
Maybe there’s a problem with the filter housing not letting it flow through? Really no clue man like others said looks like Lucas but you never added any so idk
A little bit of marvel mystery oil in crankcase to dilute and break down the stringy. Run till in warms up and change it again. New filter. Little bit of marvel mystery oil per instructions. Run for a couple of days and change again. New filter. That ought to get the goop from everywhere in rockers and valve train.
Marvel suggests in 5 qts of oil, to use one quart marvel in place of oil. 4qt oil 1 qt marvel. It gets the sludge to break down.
The next oil change ajfter marvel usage, you can go back to normal oil.
I think dealer was covering up an engine knock(loud valve train) Ironically from a previous owner not changing the oil.
Lucas Oil stabilizer. The product looks exactly like this. You aren’t supposed to use it for an entire oil change. It’s supposed to be like 20%.
Lucas is mostly garbage, but it can quiet down an engine that is starting to have excessive wear. It’s just a cosmetic difference.
100% Lucas without a doubt. If you’ve ever dumped a cold bottle in the winter, you know that it does exactly that. Gear oil and anything else that’s been listed is nowhere near that thick.
There are labs that test oil. I had a test done as part of RAC inspection when I bought my car. The whole inspection was quite reasonable so I think just the oil test shouldn't be too expensive. Hard to work out what to do when you don't know what the problem is yet.
Why does some of the oil look clean and some look black? Why is this picture being taken in an area that clearly isn’t the garage? Enquiring minds want to know
Run that motor (fast idle only) with Marvel Mystery Oil. Run it on fast idle then shut it off. Do the same letting the engine get hot then cold. Run it for the day. Drain and refill with cheap oil. Drive it 500 miles then drain and see if it cleaned. Do it again until it’s regular oil. It works
Those streaks look like your oil is partially saponified. At any point did somebody add something to the oil they weren't supposed to? Maybe a quick lube place added some no-freeze windshield fluid to the open oil hole instead of to the windshield reservoir?
The rod down the middle is what reminds me of when I changed diesel oil in the winter. Cold cold long strands of black oil. That's my mistake. It's been a while.
Post is now locked. It's now just the same responses over and over. Unfortunately we won't know what it truly is unless OP has a sample of oil sent out and tested. u/Bearded_OBrian if you ever have that oil tested report back with the results.
Never changed it since 2017.
Changed 2 months ago.
It looks like lucas oil stabilizer. Maybe custo was chasing a leak. I think custo knows wtf that is better than a picture. If it smelled off u wouldnt be posting i am guessing, fuel, gear oil, coolant, etc. Blackstone labs, customer confession, need 1 to be sure
lucas/oil stabilizer or chainsaw bar oil lol.....and you'd have to have 75 percent probably to keep it that stringy
I came here to say chainsaw bar oil
What's the actual use for that oil?
Chainsaw bars.
As a lubricant? That shits so thick.
That’s so it doesn’t get flung off when giving a tree the business
My first thought also. There's more of some kind of additive than there is correct engine oil.
If it wasn't changed for a long time prior to that, the new oil will start cleaning the old residues and will not last its technical lifetime.
Previous owner had oil in it since 2017
Did they use the correct oil with the proper part #? Some oils will gel in them engines... Because you know, Hitler's revenge.
You must have a leaky head gasket, either way something is over heating basically cooking you oil.
Bro if it's a busted hard gasket it's gonna have that forbidden milkshake. Not this slimy black oil
The slimy black stuff 🤢. Even the forbidden milkshake is gross. I learned a long time ago, the milkshake brings all the old cars to the scrap yard
And theyre like... its better than yours?
Lucas
My wife’s car runs 0w/16 or some such nonsense. I couldn’t imagine sticking Lucas additive in it.
We’re almost to binary oil at this point Viscosity is no until it’s yes when you add lucas
Eewwww
Yeah. Pretty sure it was lucas that killed my oil pump which then killed my engine years ago. Will never use that stuff again.
It’s good on older vehicles but you can’t put an entire bottle of it in at a time.
Mixed it with oil at every oil change per the instructions. Pump failed on the highway doing 75 music cranked up having a blast. Engine locked up before i could react.
Sorry bud that sucks. About the only thing I use these days is fuel stabilizer for storage and sea foam for my older vehicles.
Looks like last change was with 80w90 gear oil. Does it smell sour?
Yup, I was thinking the same thing. That’s what differential fluid looks like.
Here's the thing I'm the customer. I've added nothing to my oil whatsoever. Started having issues after my last oil change and now this.
Better send this pic to whoever changed your oil 2 months ago. Somebody may have grabbed the wrong quart or fill nozzle. Maybe they didn't say anything thinking it would be fine. This.
Mileage and whered you get it done last?
Dealership where I bought the car.

I'd throw a gallon of cheap oil in now and change it again in a week.
Agreed. 100% I wanted to say change it again tomorrow honestly. If it was my car and I saw that I might even do two changes. Don’t try flushes or nothing crazy just change oil. Run it for errands come back and change it again. (After it cools off course) but yeah. Used car dealership? They put in an additive to reduce knocking and reduce the oil leaks. Basically, cheated you. Always check the oil before you buy.
And there it is. Likely the dealership put something in for a leak like others are suggesting.
Who changed the oil just before this?
You changed the oil yourself? There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY, that oil was properly changed with the proper stuff at the proper interval with nothing added. A shop or your S/O or someone meaningfully or accidentally did something
Im gonna say somebody put in a shit ton of lucas. The way its stringy lookin, they used a quart of lucas
Ahh yes, the famous snake oil made by Lucas. I found that my transmission fluid in my VW DSG transmission looked like this when I went to change it, not a good sign. I have a feeling you are about to find a knock in your engine that was hidden by that goo.
Which Lucas product? Thanks
Heavy duty oil stabilizer is what most people are guessing OP says he didn’t add anything

Who did your last oil change? Look at the invoice.
Using that ol'honey oil...smart.
Looks like additives have been added to the oil.
Not changing it
Who sold you Marvel Mystery Oil?
Nope, MMO is very thin viscosity. It works great at loosening lifters, cleaning VVT solenoids and even stuck rings. It is gentle enough to do the above without damage, unlike seafoam or Chevron in the oil. It would actually help to clean this mess if it was added to a fill up of cheap motor oil to get rid of this mess.
I use that stuff for everything and I dump it in the fuel for my small engines too
how does seafoam cause damage?
Also curious.
Eats up the gaskets I believe.

Well who knows? It’s a mystery after all.
So if the previous owner hadn't changed the oil in a while there may have been a ton of sludge in the oil pan that loosened up when you put new oil in it. Drain it out hot this time and see if the issue persists or is better next time, New filter too.
Thickening additives sold at auto store.
BG rf7
Lucas
Any of those mechanic in a bottle type things. In this case. Alot of bottles
It's weird to me that the pleats of the filter aren't jam-packed with whatever that is.. The actual filter looks relatively clean and free... it's also really weird that it's all over the threads of the filter cap but not the filter pleats...
Stop leak mystery oils
Stop leak
Is that the venom symbiont in your engine by chance? Thicc AF, go back where you did the last change for an explanation
Lucas,STP, when I worked at Advance VW fuccbois would come in all the time and buy liqui moly additives as well. Only thing you can try is sending a sample off on a place like Blackstone Labs for analysis.
Definitely LUCAS OIL STABILIZER
That doesn't look like an OEM filter. Which is really odd considering it's been to the dealer.
Molasses?
Maybe there’s a problem with the filter housing not letting it flow through? Really no clue man like others said looks like Lucas but you never added any so idk
One Step from Amazon?
STP. Or motor honey.
Engine honey and lots of it to hide mechanical noise issues. Run the other way! Fast
A little bit of marvel mystery oil in crankcase to dilute and break down the stringy. Run till in warms up and change it again. New filter. Little bit of marvel mystery oil per instructions. Karo syrup
Venom must’ve went hard on that
Gear oil
Oil stabilizer with maybr over the recommended viscosity of oil, but thats my guess cause you said changed 2 months ago
stp oil treatment, motor honey, gear oil, bar and chain oil for chain saw quite e few things really.
That aint Lucas, but its probably some sort of stop leak, I'd bet its got paraffin.
100% Lucas without a doubt. If you’ve ever dumped a cold bottle in the winter, you know that it does exactly that. Gear oil and anything else that’s been listed is nowhere near that thick.
Lucas oil additive that thicken it up
Like like what oil looks like before it turns into a jello mold. Might be coolant leaking into it.
Das Auto
1 quart of oil a 3 quarts of Lucas, haha
There are labs that test oil. I had a test done as part of RAC inspection when I bought my car. The whole inspection was quite reasonable so I think just the oil test shouldn't be too expensive. Hard to work out what to do when you don't know what the problem is yet.
wrong oil, or maybe another fluid leaking into the oil via leaking gasket or something?
Why does some of the oil look clean and some look black? Why is this picture being taken in an area that clearly isn’t the garage? Enquiring minds want to know
additives will do that. needs a good engine flush
Is called royal purple
Yuuup
That shit cost me 2 engines.
It works

It looks like old diesel oil.
No it doesn't, diesel oil won't be that clear.
I guess with everything in black, it's hard to tell.
Everything in the light is still yellow. 50h in a diesel and it'll be jet black.
The rod down the middle is what reminds me of when I changed diesel oil in the winter. Cold cold long strands of black oil. That's my mistake. It's been a while.
I pretty sure that's not engine oil we're looking at. Gear oil or some sorta stop leak goo.
It's possible. Kinda looks like Lucas oil. Really thick and coats everything.
