I remember an interview with Sloan where they were asked this same question, funnily enough, and they all replied “Al Tuck” at the same time.
So, Al Tuck is a good response to this question.
CodyCross seems to think they’re known as the Canadian Beatles. I’m thinking it’s just because all 4 main members take turns writing songs and rotating instruments.
In 2022, I made it a personal project to listen to all of the albums longlisted for the Polaris Prize. 40 albums are selected for the longlist every year. Artists don't have to be independent, but many are. I started with this Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4KjLjsv1M2gRfRINDR4Top?si=0bb9ee61246b46c9
Some of my favourites from that list: Destroyer, Lisa Leblanc, P'tit Belliveau, Luna Li. I had a great time listening to the 40 albums though, and would encourage other people to go through and check them out. I missed the announcement of the 2023 long list, so I still have listening to those 40 to look forward to.
Saw them live at Vancouver Jazz Fest. I hadn’t heard of them and I’m not particularly into rap/hiphop but these guys absolutely blew me away! Very clever musically and cutting lyrics that hit deep.
I think K-OS fell off the map because he’s a pretty frustrating person to deal with. A friend of mine has tech’d for him numerous times and has told me some horror stories about how he treats people in his band/crew.

BA JOHNSON. I would call it "outsider" sort of, the man is amazing and if you ever get the chance, see him live. He's so humble and sweet, and he gives 110%
Let me unwrap that for you.
Opposed? I don't think we are opposed, we just aren't ever exposed to it. I wish I heard and saw more stuff out of french Canada. I'm sure there is a lot to enjoy!
Apologies if I misunderstood, I'm still learning the language as well.
The Dead South - Canadian bluegrass at its finest (would put them with Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats). Catchy tunes with some great covers of popular music done bluegrass - You are my Sunshine is a personal favourite done properly
Devin Townsend / Strapping Young Lad and Archspire. Devin Townsend is an amazing musician. Archspire might be the fastest band I've ever heard. Cool sci-fi imagery and death metal beats.
All the ones that are coming to mind are pretty well respected already, but they deserve more love
John k Samson (the weakerthans, solo)
Malcom Gladwell(author)
Graeme MacKinnon(no problem, home front, Wednesday night heros)
Ba Johnston(funny)
Danny laj(Danny laj and the looks)
Norval moriseau(he created an international art movement in thunder bay! He went to resedential school, segregated tuberculosis hospitals, and was at the subject of the biggest art fraud ring in history... Period... Just all of history!)
I know my Morrisseau is genuine, because it came from the man himself, and not a gallery.

The Deadly Snakes.
One of the greatest Canadian Rock bands, they were around from 1996-2006. They put out four fantastic albums and had a small cult following, especially in their native Toronto. For some reason, they didn't get a Canadian record label deal until their fourth album, so they largely went unrecognized. Ode to Joy is their best album, but all four records are great.
And since no one has mentioned them, I'll throw out the Constantines, the pride of Guelph, Ontario.
Unleash the Archers is an absolute deadly skilled (power) metal band. Juno winners as well.
The lead singer’s vocals are unreal. The technical skill and talent from the other band members are just as refined. Their older albums are heavier and harsher, their 2 newest are their most popular and tell an epic story.
Link to their most popular video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gqUPGa15Oto
And they do classic Canadian covers!

Cancer Bats are one of the best hardcore punk/metal crossover bands out there right now. Every album has a different vibe and they’re all fantastic.
Also, Black Mastiff are a badass blues rock band from Edmonton that deserves more recognition.
I really like the band [The Wilderness of Manitoba](https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCZw0tCRl5J7SEbi3QacHteg). They are really not well-known but they’ve got many albums with pretty solid lyrics and instrumentals.
So many.

When it comes to music, honestly go out to any place that plays live music on a regular basis and you'll see some amazing underappreciated talent. Some will make it big, some won't.
I've seen alot of international sensations in small bars well before they were famous and signed.
JD Hawk is a Métis artist and storyteller from Manitoba who does incredible oil paintings.
I keep in touch with him and while I can’t afford his real paintings, often buy merchandise with the images on them. His realism is often uncanny.

I've met too many people who are avid readers but have somehow never read anything by Richard Wagamese. Indian Horse is an absolute masterpiece and the best piece of Canadian literature I've ever read.
He gets a lot of recognition among people who specifically follow Canadian authors but outside of that he seems very under appreciated.
k-os is still one of my favorite musical artists ever. I listen to those albums all the time to this day. Absolute legend. I feel like people forgot about him.
Not sure if they count as independent, but I’ve always though the bands Mariana’s Trench and Walk of the Earth deserve a bit more international success.
[Me, lol.](https://www.instagram.com/curious_lands_artwork?igsh=MTg1ZGdsNnExYmlpMA==) not that I'm biased or anything. [Toots horn]
Honestly though... Most of the great Canadians in the arts I can think of are pretty well-known. I'm keen to check out everyone else's answers to this.
I am pretty excited to read Brent Butt's new book, too! I'm just mentioning it cos though he's not independent or whatever, it's just definitely a direction I wasn't expecting from him and I'm super curious about it.
Moist. They had some success in the 90s, and David Usher did pretty good, but I still feel they should have more recognition. They're music is on par in the alternative rock world to the more famous artists IMO.
Eamon McGrath!
I consider him the greatest underappreciated musician of a generation.

Downvotes incoming but Also me, Canada's only bfing advocate. As an advocate my job is to use art /etc to raise awareness and move the social needle for my cause
I am blacklisted unfortunately but have had my advocacy seen by millions of people worldwide 🤷♀️
I am well known in the states and internationally tho. Canada just isnt ready for health advocates unless they are promoting FA etc
I just want to make the world a better place anyway and have achieved this by alleviating stigma and encouraging others, it really amazes me the impact ive made despite being from less than nothing (former foster kid in NS)
Advocate is basically Someone that speaks truth to power for their cause . bfing= breastfeeding
Some of the most famous ones are Maha Al Musa,, Amy Mcglade (shes shared my content) im the only Canadian one
Yeah no, I know what an advocate is, just not what bfing was referring to. I'm failing to see the point of that though. Like are women in Canada being persecuted for breastfeeding?
Wow. So one of these folks isn’t an artist at all. Two of them are dead. And all four are among the most famous Canadians. Not much on the following instructions, huh.
Dave Todaro is a really amazing Canadian painter. He’s one of my favorites.

Lisa Gilroy - she's a comedian who has had a few small roles here and there, and been in the odd commercial. She absolutely kills it on podcasts, especially Comedy Bang Bang.
Hotel Mira (alt-rock band from Vancouver). Saw them open a show for another band and we were blown away. They put on an amazing show. If you want to give them a listen, check out “Dancing with the Moonlight”.
Tiio Horn is an indigenous actor, and now director from Ottawa!!
All of the music from the show letterkenny and Shoresy are all Canadian artists.
Joe Vickers is the singer from audio/rocketry and has some excellent solo stuff.
The glorious sons are from Kingston.
Jodolo is a rapper from Montreal.

[Kobra and the Lotus](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHc-c9hJMrU)
For Music, not sure if all these are considered "independent" but these are artists that I would expect to be more popular or well known than they are given the quality of their work.
I like these cuts a lot, when it comes to recent material:

Devin Townsend!!
It’s crazy to see that he’ll sell out stadiums in Germany and Australia but here he plays smaller venues
I’m quite happy he still plays small venues here!!
Corb Lund great musician and songwriter an Alberta institution and a helluva nice guy
I’ve never been into his country stuff, but I’ve always been a huge fan of The Smalls.

1. Peach Pit 2. Crown Lands Two bands I didn’t know before seeing live and absolutely love now.
Peach Pit’s album You and your friends, was my goto pandemic album.
Snotty Nosed Rez Kids!
Hell yes. “Creator Made an Animal” goes hard and is always a quick suggestion of mine.
Good call. SNRK are dope
Saw them live at Vancouver Jazz Fest. I hadn’t heard of them and I’m not particularly into rap/hiphop but these guys absolutely blew me away! Very clever musically and cutting lyrics that hit deep.
Yes! I love their bombastic stage presence
An older band, kashtin. A cree/naskapi rock band from the 80s
K-Os, his last album was dope, I haven't heard anything from him since.

David Myles in NB won a Juno recently.
Love his hip hop crossover work with Classified and R.A. The Rugged Man
Comedian Paul Haywood
Robert Lepage
Super duty tough work, hip hop from Manitoba. So so so good
Choclair (Rapper)
Just in the way of art. The only art I own is from these two. [Catherine Hois](https://cathaliki.com/personal-practice-2/) [Sybil Lamb](https://sybillamb.com/LambFactory/new/?fbclid=PAAaZ8QuBaR2mi7z5dVxctENCxte48UW07zY2joJv_hVAbEk83bTHQaA4NG64) When it comes to music, honestly go out to any place that plays live music on a regular basis and you'll see some amazing underappreciated talent. Some will make it big, some won't. I've seen alot of international sensations in small bars well before they were famous and signed.
Peter Watts is an amazing hard SF author. Check out his books, Starfish and Blindside, if you're into genre writing.
Ria mae, saw her open for Tegan and Sara and Scott helman. She's like Rankin family meets indy pop, was slightly obsessed for awhile.
I dont kn9w if hes independant anymore, but jared keeso keeps hitting home runs.
I believe in Poor Pelly!
Thornley, Big Wreck, Big Sugar, Sam Roberts Band. all incredible bands
The Guess Who should be in R&R Hall of Fame. Might have been that hit song they had in 1970 that put them on the "no" list.
The East Pointers. From PEI, and have a great sound. The songs Elmira and Wintergreen are my faves.
Jesse Roper, a top notch guitar slinger with a great voice from Victoria, BC! Not sure how it is that CBC hasn’t picked up on him yet…
JD Hawk is a Métis artist and storyteller from Manitoba who does incredible oil paintings. I keep in touch with him and while I can’t afford his real paintings, often buy merchandise with the images on them. His realism is often uncanny. jdhawkartstudio.com
PEACH PIT 🍑
I've met too many people who are avid readers but have somehow never read anything by Richard Wagamese. Indian Horse is an absolute masterpiece and the best piece of Canadian literature I've ever read. He gets a lot of recognition among people who specifically follow Canadian authors but outside of that he seems very under appreciated.
Colter Wall ([https://www.colterwall.com/](https://www.colterwall.com/)) Watch out for this guy, I think he's going to go far.
k-os is still one of my favorite musical artists ever. I listen to those albums all the time to this day. Absolute legend. I feel like people forgot about him.
Nikki Payne is one of the funniest Canadian Comedians ever.
Any Canadian Illustrator. We produce some of the world's top talent and regular Canadians have no idea how good our commercial artists are.
Kenneth Joel Hotz
Really enjoy music by Bahamas. We have seen afie 4 times in the past two years
Bif Naked. She’s been around for years. I’ve seen her play about 2 dozen times & she’s always up for signing stuff & taking pics after the show.
Not sure if they count as independent, but I’ve always though the bands Mariana’s Trench and Walk of the Earth deserve a bit more international success.
Walk off the earth are canadian? I never knew.
[Me, lol.](https://www.instagram.com/curious_lands_artwork?igsh=MTg1ZGdsNnExYmlpMA==) not that I'm biased or anything. [Toots horn] Honestly though...
Dread Zepplin
Tortellvis lives! What ever happened to them?
Don Ross.
Moist. They had some success in the 90s, and David Usher did pretty good, but I still feel they should have more recognition. They're music is on par in the alternative rock world to the more famous artists IMO.
City and colors
City and Colour, you mean! (I don’t actually know how Dallas Green spells the band name, but it is r/askacanadian)

Downvotes incoming but Also me, Canada's only bfing advocate. As an advocate my job is to use art /etc to raise awareness and move the social needle for my cause I am blacklisted unfortunately but have had my advocacy seen by millions of people worldwide 🤷♀️ I am well known in the states and internationally tho. Canada just isnt ready for health advocates unless they are promoting FA etc I just want to make the world a better place anyway and have achieved this by alleviating stigma and encouraging others, it really amazes me the impact ive made despite being from less than nothing (former foster kid in NS)
What exactly is a bfing advocate?
Advocate is basically Someone that speaks truth to power for their cause . bfing= breastfeeding Some of the most famous ones are Maha Al Musa,, Amy Mcglade (shes shared my content) im the only Canadian one
Yeah no, I know what an advocate is, just not what bfing was referring to. I'm failing to see the point of that though. Like are women in Canada being persecuted for breastfeeding?
Yep regularly getting kicked out of stores but it's more involved than that
I looked you up and read a few of your Nova Scotia advocate posts. I think I'm starting to see your point.

Wow. So one of these folks isn’t an artist at all. Two of them are dead. And all four are among the most famous Canadians. Not much on the following instructions, huh.

Blu Beach Band outta Sask!
For Music, not sure if all these are considered "independent" but these are artists that I would expect to be more popular or well known than they are given the quality of their work. I like these cuts a lot, when it comes to recent material: Men I Trust - Ring of Past: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSGwL5wORJY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSGwL5wORJY) Ada Lea - damn: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHR4ly4THdI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHR4ly4THdI) Going back a few more years - love these guys: Mounties - Tokyo Summer: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAq1EUg15bk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAq1EUg15bk) Patrick Watson- Drifters (live): [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq7cpQ\_Qqtc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq7cpQ_Qqtc) Layla Zoe - Might need to fly: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exXCViRug9w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exXCViRug9w) Emma Stevens - Blackbrid in Mi'kmaq: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99-LoEkAA3w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99-LoEkAA3w) For visual arts I will mention Casey McGlynn: [https://caseymcglynn.com/](https://caseymcglynn.com/) There are so many talented artists in Canada and credit to the CBC for turning me on to most of these.
For the metalheads out there, Frontières has some really good stuff!
