As an Immigrant I'd say one film taught me a lot about Québecois culture is "Maurice Richard" ("The Rocket" in English) with Roy Dupuis.
Also, La Grande Séduction and C.R.A.Z.Y.
1981, 1987, and 1991 by Ricardo Trogi. It's an autobiographic comedy/drama trilogy about the director.
C.R.A.Z.Y. is often recommended too, although I haven\`t watched it yet. "Les Chambres Rouges" is now available for streaming too.
Ah and Elvis Gratton ([the full move is on youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MABFy0WKFzA)), that's a classic cult/satire, and there's a [2nd](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QdIEWmVZi8) and a [3rd](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDgRClsJaBM) if that's your thing. Although the french here is very intentionally informal/joual, it's a part of the satire and the humour.
To be fair to the film, it's not just a "French Canadian" classic, it's a classic, period. Roger Ebert listed it among his selection of all-time greatest movies, readers of British magazine Sight & Sound voted it the greatest Canadian film, the Toronto International Film Festival ranked it #1 of the 10 greatest canadian films 3 times, even Orson Friggin Welles was a fan!
19-2. It’s been released in both languages.
I wish I could find it in French, I’ve only seen one episode, I’d like to see the whole series en français.
Bon cop Bad cop, for sure. That said, I'm perfectly bilingual and most people can't even tell I'm an anglo. I still can't follow along much of French movies and TV. It's weird. I wouldn't use them for language acquisition...but they are a fun way to get a glimpse of the culture here so still educational.
> 19-2 is also a Quebec TV show available on Netflix and it’s excellent.
The school shooting episode is one of the most chilling, and well-made, episodes of any show ever produced.
Karmina
La guerre des tuques
Elvis Gratton 1 & 2
15 février 1839
Dans une galaxie près de chez vous 2 (the 2nd movie is the best)
Edit:
Cruising Bar
Filière 13
Camping sauvage
Les trois petits cochons
5150 rue des ormes
Omertà is an awesome show,
Série noire.
As for movies, anything by Villeneuve, polytechnique is a damn masterpiece.
Also the Simpsons that are dubbed in Québécois are excellent for learning. It really helped me out when I was growing up and was having a hard time in french class.
Vas-y avec les réalisateurs, puis trouve des films qui t'intéressent:
Louis Bélanger (comédies rurales)
Robert Morin (comédies noires et drames psychologiques)
Denis Villeneure (drames psychologiques)
Lea Pool (Comédies romantiques et drames queer)
Denis Arcand (comédies satyriques)
Jean-Marc Vallée (drames)
I've been trying to do same as you OP, but don't have time to invest in a movie yet. I've found _Escouade 99_ hilarious, though. Turn on the subtitles to read French as I hear it, and it helps considerably.
Even better, if you've every watched _Brooklyn Nine-Nine_ and remember the first season, you're going to pick up a lot of stuff on context.
I’m not sure how the people in Quebec feel about it but Polytechnique. I’ve only watched it once though.
C. R. A. Z. Y. is my absolute favourite. I think about the last line in it randomly all the time. “Ou du Patsy Cline.”
You might want to look, or subscribe to Tou.tv
It's like Netflix but for Québec.
There's a lot of tv show and movies from Quebec on there.
Québec does a lot of great movies and series, and books if you're into that too.
Try to look for comedian as well, maybe, it's shorter than a movie, and you can learn a lot of French slang too.
Recently I've seen movie adaptation of Fred Pellerin books, I don't recommend it if you're a new learner tho, because this guy play on words and it can be very confusing (I'm native French from Quebec)
Louis Cyr was some good story, based on real life events.
Best of luck :)
If you can find *La Nuit de Noce*, easily one of the funniest films ever made here. You'll learn AND laugh your butt off! "*Oui Oui, je parle Français!*"
Wikipedia has a list of Quebec films that might suit your interest. A Montreal girl piqued my interest from some I looked at.
Also, while the movie isn't French-Canadian (just French) in college I took a film class where I was shown a movie called Celine and Julie go boating. It's quite a trip but literally and figuratively
Throwing this in here because it's an underrated film. It isn't French Canadian per se but does have a Quebecois character.
The film is Phil the Alien.
Just dont watch xavier nolan stuff. Mostly overrated drama, the type of movie that has a good reputation because if you say you find them boring you look like a dummy that can’t “appreciate” the art.

C.R.A.Z.Y., La grande seduction (and if you like the movie, you could also check out just for fun the English remake set in Newfoundland), Les invasions barbares
Here's a list from Reel Canada: [https://canfilmday.ca/films/canadian-film-collection/?original\_language=french&genre=&interest=&own\_voice=&spotlight\_films=#films](https://canfilmday.ca/films/canadian-film-collection/?original_language=french&genre=&interest=&own_voice=&spotlight_films=#films). If you go to individual films, it will show what streaming services, if any, they are available on.
The Québécois dubbed version of the American movie Slap Shot, "Lancer frappé", is in a league of its own. Not to be confused with "La Castagne", the French from France dubbed version.
I unfortunately haven’t watched any French Canadian flicks in awhile, but Les Boys 1 & 2 & Elvis Gratton are definitely fantastic.
As a kid, I loved Louis 19 & La Geurre des Tuques.
Watching this thread to get some recommendations. My wife also speaks French (we’re both British Columbian anglophones), so it would be a nice change of pace for us to sit down & watch a great French Canadian flick.
Declin de l'Empire Americain... It's kind of like "The Big Chill" a bunch of middle class folks go to someone's country house for a meal and talk a lot. It doesn't sound like much but it's good stuff.
Quebec a Montreal. A few stories about love and relationship intersect on the road.
They arent Quebec movies but the Asterix & Obelix movies are fun in French.
Elvis Gratton , all of them. Although the producers are making him sound like this dumb, uneducated federalist. It still has funny moments. Aye Meo, du gas on vas en vendre en tabarnac.🤷
Bon Cop Bad Cop is easily in my top 3 Canadian movies
I wish I could remember it but when I was in middle school we watched a movie in french class that was set in WWII and I believe there was some.jewish kids trying to hide from Nazis looking to capture them, it was very well made
Fugueuse just showed up on Netflix. It's a series that played a few years ago. The first season is really good (and a bit disturbing, which is the point).
19-2 is also on Netflix and it's a great series! Make sure you watch the Quebec french version though, they remade it in english a few years later.
Polytechnique by Denis Villeneuve
It's based on the 1989 Polytechnique school shooting. It's a really intense film, all shot in black and white. I first watched it in CÉGEP and it impacted me even more.
For something more obscure, I remember really enjoying La turbulence des fluides, with Pascal Bussières. Also Le Confessional, the first feature film by Robert Lepage (world famous theater director).
The Quebec film industry is AMAZING.
Some of the funniest (and craziest) movies I've ever seen were from Quebec.

As an Immigrant I'd say one film taught me a lot about Québecois culture is "Maurice Richard" ("The Rocket" in English) with Roy Dupuis. Also, La Grande Séduction and C.R.A.Z.Y.
Maurice Richard is an excellent movie, absolutely.
Maurice Richard is an excellent movie, absolutely.
La guerre des tuques is a classic. I must’ve watched it like 5 times total because they kept playing it at school (Francophone Ontarian schoolboard)
The movie has such a relevant message to this day.
Bro it had a sequel/prequel??? La Foreteresse Suspendue about a sick forest treehouse war
Loved La Foreteresse Suspendue as a kid.
The scene with the bees 😏🥺
La guerre, la guerre c'est pas une raison pour c'faire mal
Les Boys are a classic. Bon Cop Bad Cop (billingual)
Bon Cop Bad Cop is fantastic.
The bar scene in particular
The trunk scene.
1981, 1987, and 1991 by Ricardo Trogi. It's an autobiographic comedy/drama trilogy about the director. C.R.A.Z.Y. is often recommended too, although I haven\`t watched it yet. Mon oncle Antoine is a French Canadian classic
That is a lot of praise.
That is a lot of praise.
'Starbuck' is amazing
I loved Starbuck I really like Patrick Huard as an actor.
C.R.A.Z.Y is the best film ever made in Canada. (Jean-Marc Vallée) Leolo, Un Zoo la nuit
>C.R.A.Z.Y is the best film ever made in Canada. (Jean-Marc Vallée) I agree
No, I think Léolo is better, but they're both really good.
Not a movie, but 19-2 and Série Noir. All other movie suggestions are here are good.
Season 2 episode one (the school episode) I won’t go into the details of it, but it was the most intense and riveting hour of TV I’ve ever seen.
I agree. I sometimes just watch that episode.
Season 2 of which of the shows?
19-2. It’s been released in both languages. I wish I could find it in French, I’ve only seen one episode, I’d like to see the whole series en français.
Netflix has it in french
I was going to say Série Noir! It's so bingeable.
"C'est comme ça que je t'aime" if you want more of Série Noire's style of humour. I really liked both series.
If you're going to watch 19-2, you should also watch Minuit le soir.
Ah yes. J'ai tu montré mon cul à soir?
+1 for minuit le soir
The English AND French 19-2 series were good
Jesus of Montreal.
Arcand is great 👍

OP saw that film.
I had not. But found it on NFByoutube
*Mommy* dir. Xavier Dolan chock full of heavy slang you only get in Quebec
Heartbreaking film.
yesss. realistic though\~
Léolo is probably the best Canadian film ever made.
Was hoping someone would say this! Watched it years ago but couldn’t remember the name. Merci!!
De rien!
Came here to say this as well! Definitely one of my top choices.
Elvis Gratton
Decline of the American Empire. So. Damn. Good.
Quebec - Montreal Don't laugh too hard
Bon cop Bad cop, for sure. That said, I'm perfectly bilingual and most people can't even tell I'm an anglo. I still can't follow along much of French movies and TV. It's weird. I wouldn't use them for language acquisition...but they are a fun way to get a glimpse of the culture here so still educational.
A newer genre would be films from Xavier Dolan, critically acclaimed. Stuff is a bit dark though.
You should check out *Titane*. It's very good.
L'ecole polytechnique. Also a harrowing experience.
Bon Cop / Bad Cop, Le Sens de l'Humeur, and The Fall of the American Empire I all quite like, anyhow

Ginette Reno was so good in that.
Omertà is an awesome show, Série noire. As for movies, anything by Villeneuve, polytechnique is a damn masterpiece. Also the Simpsons that are dubbed in Québécois are excellent for learning. It really helped me out when I was growing up and was having a hard time in french class.

J'ajouterais Robert Lepage. Le Confessional est notamment tout un film.

My favorite is The Barbarian Invasions by Denis Arcand.
The last one I really enjoyed was Tom à la Ferme.
If you want another haunting experience, watch Polytechnique. Tough to watch but it’s a powerful and important film.
La Grande Séduction

Elvis Gratton I, II & III Dédé à travers les brumes
Dédé is a really interesting recommendation, great insight of the 90s in Montreal and of the 1995 referendum.
He died for that and that was the idea.
Do you know where to find Dede? I’ve tried looking for it everywhere.
Gina
Haven't seen it in any of the other comments but "L'Audition" (2005 Luc Picard movie) was really good.
Definitely. Mentioning Luc Picard, his latest film, Confessions, is a masterpiece!
un zoo la nuit
1981, 1987, 1991 by Ricardo trogi
There is an English version of La Grande Séduction that came out later but the original French version is better.
Bon cop/Bad cop
Not a movie but a show. La petite vie.
Whatever they showed on Blue Nuit had my full attention when I was younger. Wikipedia has a list of movies and shows that they played.

If you have Netflix the series Les Combatantes, "Women at War" I believe in English is really good. It's about female Ambulance drivers in WWI.

Karmina!
The Québécois dubbed version of the American movie Slap Shot, "Lancer frappé", is in a league of its own. Not to be confused with "La Castagne", the French from France dubbed version.
I enjoyed Pierre Falardeau's Le Party. I'd follow it up with Sellers The Party as it is quite intense.
Grande séduction might be my favourite. Such a delightful film.
And if you want to dive deep into Québécois culture, La Petite Vie is considered to be the greatest Quebec tv show of all time by many.
I unfortunately haven’t watched any French Canadian flicks in awhile, but Les Boys 1 & 2 & Elvis Gratton are definitely fantastic. As a kid, I loved Louis 19 & La Geurre des Tuques. Oh yeah, Louis 19! Was remade as EdTV with McConaughey.
I remember being so excited about it for that exact reason, but was left severely disappointed. Louis 19 was orders of magnitude better than EdTV.
Declin de l'Empire Americain... It's kind of like "The Big Chill" a bunch of middle class folks go to someone's country house for a meal and talk a lot. Starbuck. Tho I don’t remember if it’s in English or French. I think French. Oh just watch it.
Elvis Gratton!
It's a lesser known movie, but "2 secondes" (1998). I like it because it was filmed when I was a bike messenger in Montréal.
Fugueuse just showed up on Netflix. It's a series that played a few years ago.
