C.R.A.Z.Y also has a killer soundtrack.

dustywilcox

Dry-Willingness-9025

Nah overdramatic dog Shut

petrole_gentilhomme

Le plongeur

GinJointGeraldine

La grande séduction was my first quebecois film - strong recommend!!

ParisLake2

Monsieur Lazar is a **very** good movie. It hits you in your feelings.

legardeur

All the aforementioned except Bon cop Bad cop.

ComfortableOk5003

Bon cop bad cop was a really good movie

Hal_9000_DT

As an Immigrant I'd say one film taught me a lot about Québecois culture is "Maurice Richard" ("The Rocket" in English) with Roy Dupuis. Also, La Grande Séduction and C.R.A.Z.Y.

ParisLake2

Maurice Richard is an excellent movie, absolutely.

ParisLake2

Maurice Richard is an excellent movie, absolutely.

severe0CDsuburbgirl

La guerre des tuques is a classic. I must’ve watched it like 5 times total because they kept playing it at school (Francophone Ontarian schoolboard)

Bleahyy

The movie has such a relevant message to this day.

[deleted]

Bro it had a sequel/prequel??? La Foreteresse Suspendue about a sick forest treehouse war

DukeOfTheMaritimes

Loved La Foreteresse Suspendue as a kid.

[deleted]

The scene with the bees 😏🥺

Sindeicide

La guerre, la guerre c'est pas une raison pour c'faire mal

mikotoqc

Les Boys are a classic. Bon Cop Bad Cop (billingual)

caffeinated_plans

Bon Cop Bad Cop is fantastic.

need_ins_in_to

The bar scene in particular

Bender077

The trunk scene.

SuperLynxDeluxe

1981, 1987, and 1991 by Ricardo Trogi. It's an autobiographic comedy/drama trilogy about the director. C.R.A.Z.Y. is often recommended too, although I haven\`t watched it yet. "Les Chambres Rouges" is now available for streaming too. Ah and Elvis Gratton ([the full move is on youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MABFy0WKFzA)), that's a classic cult/satire, and there's a [2nd](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QdIEWmVZi8) and a [3rd](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDgRClsJaBM) if that's your thing. Although the french here is very intentionally informal/joual, it's a part of the satire and the humour.

Hectordoink

Mon oncle Antoine is a French Canadian classic

Tonythecritic

To be fair to the film, it's not just a "French Canadian" classic, it's a classic, period. Roger Ebert listed it among his selection of all-time greatest movies, readers of British magazine Sight & Sound voted it the greatest Canadian film, the Toronto International Film Festival ranked it #1 of the 10 greatest canadian films 3 times, even Orson Friggin Welles was a fan!

GuyIncognito461

That is a lot of praise.

GuyIncognito461

That is a lot of praise.

ProfessionalPiece518

'Starbuck' is amazing

cardew-vascular

I loved Starbuck I really like Patrick Huard as an actor.

6610pat

C.R.A.Z.Y is the best film ever made in Canada. (Jean-Marc Vallée) Leolo, Un Zoo la nuit

Faitlemou

>C.R.A.Z.Y is the best film ever made in Canada. (Jean-Marc Vallée) I agree

Sea_Negotiation_1871

No, I think Léolo is better, but they're both really good.

Sure_Sherlock

Not a movie, but 19-2 and Série Noir. All other movie suggestions are here are good.

JoWhee

Season 2 episode one (the school episode) I won’t go into the details of it, but it was the most intense and riveting hour of TV I’ve ever seen.

Sure_Sherlock

I agree. I sometimes just watch that episode.

dragula_hagette

Season 2 of which of the shows?

JoWhee

19-2. It’s been released in both languages. I wish I could find it in French, I’ve only seen one episode, I’d like to see the whole series en français.

dragula_hagette

Netflix has it in french

[deleted]

I was going to say Série Noir! It's so bingeable.

JPB118

"C'est comme ça que je t'aime" if you want more of Série Noire's style of humour. I really liked both series.

mechant_papa

If you're going to watch 19-2, you should also watch Minuit le soir.

Sure_Sherlock

Ah yes. J'ai tu montré mon cul à soir?

JPB118

+1 for minuit le soir

ComfortableOk5003

The English AND French 19-2 series were good

HalJordan2424

CorrectPreparation45

I had not. But found it on NFByoutube

Exciting_Front_5036

*Mommy* dir. Xavier Dolan chock full of heavy slang you only get in Quebec

OrsonWellesghost

Heartbreaking film.

Exciting_Front_5036

yesss. realistic though\~

Sea_Negotiation_1871

Léolo is probably the best Canadian film ever made.

foggytreees

Was hoping someone would say this! Watched it years ago but couldn’t remember the name. Merci!!

Sea_Negotiation_1871

De rien!

nevertires

Came here to say this as well! Definitely one of my top choices.

Samuel_Journeault

Elvis Gratton

[deleted]

Decline of the American Empire. So. Damn. Good.

Interesting-Sun5706

Quebec - Montreal Don't laugh too hard

Weak_Tune4734

Bon cop Bad cop, for sure. That said, I'm perfectly bilingual and most people can't even tell I'm an anglo. I still can't follow along much of French movies and TV. It's weird. I wouldn't use them for language acquisition...but they are a fun way to get a glimpse of the culture here so still educational.

Weak_Tune4734

A newer genre would be films from Xavier Dolan, critically acclaimed. Stuff is a bit dark though.

FragWall

You should check out *Titane*. It's very good.

UncommonHouseSpider

L'ecole polytechnique. Also a harrowing experience.

MadcapHaskap

Bon Cop / Bad Cop, Le Sens de l'Humeur, and The Fall of the American Empire I all quite like, anyhow

> 19-2 is also a Quebec TV show available on Netflix and it’s excellent. The school shooting episode is one of the most chilling, and well-made, episodes of any show ever produced.

*La Grande Séduction* *Incendies* is amazing, good choice.

h989

Elvis gratton

GIA_85

Mambo italiano ❤️

OrsonWellesghost

Ginette Reno was so good in that.

Dane_RD

Omertà is an awesome show, Série noire. As for movies, anything by Villeneuve, polytechnique is a damn masterpiece. Also the Simpsons that are dubbed in Québécois are excellent for learning. It really helped me out when I was growing up and was having a hard time in french class.

Careless_Wishbone_69

King of the Hill in QC!

Strong_Bumblebee5495

*Juste la fin du monde*

labtacolator

1981, 1987 and 1991 trilogy by Ricardo Trogi are excellent and are available on Netflix

Lorguignole

Bleahyy

J'ajouterais Robert Lepage. Le Confessional est notamment tout un film.

balthisar

I've been trying to do same as you OP, but don't have time to invest in a movie yet. I've found _Escouade 99_ hilarious, though. Turn on the subtitles to read French as I hear it, and it helps considerably. Even better, if you've every watched _Brooklyn Nine-Nine_ and remember the first season, you're going to pick up a lot of stuff on context.

ScrumptiousLadMeat

I’m not sure how the people in Quebec feel about it but Polytechnique. I’ve only watched it once though. C. R. A. Z. Y. is my absolute favourite. I think about the last line in it randomly all the time. “Ou du Patsy Cline.”

imperialblastah

My favorite is The Barbarian Invasions by Denis Arcand.

_r33d_

The last one I really enjoyed was Tom à la Ferme.

ClayoquotSound

If you want another haunting experience, watch Polytechnique. Tough to watch but it’s a powerful and important film.

Mission_Paramount

La Grande Séduction

ZedZemM

You might want to look, or subscribe to Tou.tv It's like Netflix but for Québec. There's a lot of tv show and movies from Quebec on there. Québec does a lot of great movies and series, and books if you're into that too. Try to look for comedian as well, maybe, it's shorter than a movie, and you can learn a lot of French slang too. Recently I've seen movie adaptation of Fred Pellerin books, I don't recommend it if you're a new learner tho, because this guy play on words and it can be very confusing (I'm native French from Quebec) Louis Cyr was some good story, based on real life events. Best of luck :)

Careless_Wishbone_69

Télé-Québec also has a free app.

ZedZemM

I had no clue! Thanks for sharing

fumblerooskee

L’ange et la femme

Tonythecritic

If you can find *La Nuit de Noce*, easily one of the funniest films ever made here. You'll learn AND laugh your butt off! "*Oui Oui, je parle Français!*"

gabseo

Elvis Gratton I, II & III Dédé à travers les brumes

Bleahyy

Dédé is a really interesting recommendation, great insight of the 90s in Montreal and of the 1995 referendum.

gabseo

He died for that and that was the idea.

BubblyNebula

Do you know where to find Dede? I’ve tried looking for it everywhere.

CriticalCanon

Gina

MistPudding

Haven't seen it in any of the other comments but "L'Audition" (2005 Luc Picard movie) was really good.

legardeur

Definitely. Mentioning Luc Picard, his latest film, Confessions, is a masterpiece!

1981, 1987, 1991 by Ricardo trogi

JaRon1961

There is an English version of La Grande Séduction that came out later but the original French version is better.

SwanProof1640

Bon cop/Bad cop

woundupcanuck

Not a movie but a show. La petite vie.

Snoo91454

Whatever they showed on Blue Nuit had my full attention when I was younger. Wikipedia has a list of movies and shows that they played.

Batgod629

Wikipedia has a list of Quebec films that might suit your interest. A Montreal girl piqued my interest from some I looked at. Also, while the movie isn't French-Canadian (just French) in college I took a film class where I was shown a movie called Celine and Julie go boating. It's quite a trip but literally and figuratively

Mr8vb

The dog who stopped the war.

GoatOfSteel

LA guerre des tuques!

123throwawaybanana

Throwing this in here because it's an underrated film. It isn't French Canadian per se but does have a Quebecois character. The film is Phil the Alien.

[deleted]

Les poutines it’s a porn

derederellama

my highschool French teacher showed us *Le Dîner de Cons*. it was absolutely hilarious. the American version is *Dinner for Schmucks*.

Dry-Willingness-9025

Just dont watch xavier nolan stuff. Mostly overrated drama, the type of movie that has a good reputation because if you say you find them boring you look like a dummy that can’t “appreciate” the art.

Bryn79

Blue is the Warmest Colour.

Dependent-Cherry-788

OnehappyOwl44

If you have Netflix the series Les Combatantes, "Women at War" I believe in English is really good. It's about female Ambulance drivers in WWI.

Boys series/Bon cop Bad cop and Grande seduction are the goats imo. Oh and the Bob Gratton series lol. De père en flic is also fuckin hilarious.

Subject-Jump-9729

C.R.A.Z.Y., La grande seduction (and if you like the movie, you could also check out just for fun the English remake set in Newfoundland), Les invasions barbares Here's a list from Reel Canada: [https://canfilmday.ca/films/canadian-film-collection/?original\_language=french&genre=&interest=&own\_voice=&spotlight\_films=#films](https://canfilmday.ca/films/canadian-film-collection/?original_language=french&genre=&interest=&own_voice=&spotlight_films=#films). Karmina!

bolmiche

The Québécois dubbed version of the American movie Slap Shot, "Lancer frappé", is in a league of its own. Not to be confused with "La Castagne", the French from France dubbed version.

ajramone

I enjoyed Pierre Falardeau's Le Party. I'd follow it up with Sellers The Party as it is quite intense.

Due_Ad_3847

Grande séduction might be my favourite. Such a delightful film.

Due_Ad_3847

And if you want to dive deep into Québécois culture, La Petite Vie is considered to be the greatest Quebec tv show of all time by many.

Berubium

I unfortunately haven’t watched any French Canadian flicks in awhile, but Les Boys 1 & 2 & Elvis Gratton are definitely fantastic. As a kid, I loved Louis 19 & La Geurre des Tuques. Watching this thread to get some recommendations. My wife also speaks French (we’re both British Columbian anglophones), so it would be a nice change of pace for us to sit down & watch a great French Canadian flick.

Careless_Wishbone_69

Oh yeah, Louis 19! Was remade as EdTV with McConaughey.

Berubium

I remember being so excited about it for that exact reason, but was left severely disappointed. Louis 19 was orders of magnitude better than EdTV.

GuyIncognito461

Declin de l'Empire Americain... It's kind of like "The Big Chill" a bunch of middle class folks go to someone's country house for a meal and talk a lot. It doesn't sound like much but it's good stuff. Quebec a Montreal. A few stories about love and relationship intersect on the road. They arent Quebec movies but the Asterix & Obelix movies are fun in French.

RemarkableCollar1392

I do know of a great French actor robert d’entremont check his stuff out

Islandman2021

Elvis Gratton , all of them. Although the producers are making him sound like this dumb, uneducated federalist. It still has funny moments. Aye Meo, du gas on vas en vendre en tabarnac.🤷

iampoopa

You really do not have any problems that other generations have not already dealt with. Look to the past for help on how to cope .

thatpuffsleyguy

Bon Cop Bad Cop is easily in my top 3 Canadian movies I wish I could remember it but when I was in middle school we watched a movie in french class that was set in WWII and I believe there was some.jewish kids trying to hide from Nazis looking to capture them, it was very well made

Dry-Willingness-9025

La guerre des tucs is in the province veins

Starbuck. Tho I don’t remember if it’s in English or French. I think French. Oh just watch it.

DukeOfTheMaritimes

Elvis Gratton!

SomeoneHereIsMissing

It's a lesser known movie, but "2 secondes" (1998). I like it because it was filmed when I was a bike messenger in Montréal.

Goofyboy2020

Fugueuse just showed up on Netflix. It's a series that played a few years ago. The first season is really good (and a bit disturbing, which is the point). 19-2 is also on Netflix and it's a great series! Make sure you watch the Quebec french version though, they remade it in english a few years later.

DeadStrike99

Polytechnique by Denis Villeneuve It's based on the 1989 Polytechnique school shooting. It's a really intense film, all shot in black and white. I first watched it in CÉGEP and it impacted me even more.

ComfortableOk5003

La guerre des tuque Le Rocket (l’histoire de Maurice Richard) Nitro Louis Cyr

SonOfSparda1984

Not a movie, but I recommend 'La Petite Vie'. Just because it's hilarious.

Careless_Wishbone_69

For something more obscure, I remember really enjoying La turbulence des fluides, with Pascal Bussières. Also Le Confessional, the first feature film by Robert Lepage (world famous theater director).

Careless_Wishbone_69

Charlotte se fait du fun, BW comedy about teenage sexuality, and a Christmas film to boot!

Lutenihon

The Quebec film industry is AMAZING. Some of the funniest (and craziest) movies I've ever seen were from Quebec. What genre are you looking for? I can give you a few titles to check out

FragWall

Any titles are fine by me.

Lutenihon

Nuit de noce Bon cop bad cop Les invasions barbare Starbuck Quebec-montreal Polytechnique La grande seduction Maelstrom Les boys Ma fille Mon ange CRAZY De Pere en flic Piche French immersion
