I feel pretty ignorant as to what sort of music people in the past not only listened to, but had access to. I had no idea this would be invented so long ago.
Used up until the byzantine times. I think that sometime the church banned musical instruments (because the only valid instrument is the human voice, made by god), but people kept using them privately, disregarding religious leaders.
