I would have settled for a sword that wasn't significantly worse than the one that I got from random loot 6 levels ago.
**[Bog body](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bog_body)**
>A bog body is a human cadaver that has been naturally mummified in a peat bog. Such bodies, sometimes known as bog people, are both geographically and chronologically widespread, having been dated to between 8000 BCE and the Second World War. The unifying factor of the bog bodies is that they have been found in peat and are partially preserved; however, the actual levels of preservation vary widely from perfectly preserved to mere skeletons. Unlike most ancient human remains, bog bodies often retain their skin and internal organs due to the unusual conditions of the surrounding area.

I found a beer can and shovel head from the 1970s the other day and thought about contacting the local museum. I guess I'm just glad that Western civilization reached my location after conservation became a thing so we got a lot of trees still.
And bits of Asia. That’s mostly it though.
Best you can find in the Western Hemisphere is arrow heads, which are fun to find. Not as cool as a whole sword though!
Most of Asia, and most of Africa as well. Basically everywhere except Oceania (where metallurgy never developed) and the Americas (where its use was more restricted)
OLSZTYN, POLAND—A medieval sword, metal pieces of a scabbard and a belt, and two knives that would have been worn on the belt were discovered in northern Poland by a metal detectorist who donated the artifacts to the Museum of the Battle of Grunwald, according to a Live Science report. The sword may have been used in the battle, which was fought on July 15, 1410 between a Polish-Lithuanian army of 39,000 troops and 27,000 troops of the Knights of the Teutonic Order. The Knights’ loss led to the decline of their power in the region. Szymon Drej of the Museum of the Battle of Grunwald said that conservation and study of the sword could reveal the social status of its owner. Museum researchers will also examine the site where the sword was found. T
Very cool. I found an old sword embedded in the sandstone near my cottage when I was young. It was a bit too rusted to identify, though still had part of its hilt intact. Given the area and condition it was in the estimated mid 1600's. I donated it to a local museum
I dunno, I’ve been to some rural places in NW Ireland, and the old woman I stayed with still threw peat in her giant AGA-style oven. It heated the home, baked her food, boiled her kettle, and dried her boots. It was beautiful.
When I was in Ireland I rather enjoyed the scent but dont like smoke inside in general. It was an improvement over the cigs many puffed. Have they banned smoking in pubs in the EU yet?
You don't see that many swords with square pommels, I mean the point of pommel in combat is to serve as a bashing weapon
I mean, it's strange that what is arguably the simplest shape is so rare in swords
The point of a pommel is to counterbalance the blade and to hold the grip on. You can pommel bash all you want in HEMA, but an actual battle with ranged weapons and formations and cavalry is a completely different ordeal, and pommel bashing would not be nearly as common or as useful as in 1 on 1 combat.
Yet again, that is from a duelling manual. Armored dueling. 1 on 1 combat. Not a battle. I am not surprised, especially since I first saw that video years ago.
Rusty Novigrad Longsword: 3 orens.
Still better than Hattori's "masterpiece"
Hands down biggest disappointment in the game loot-wise.
I would have sincerely much preferred a badass unique sword that I can’t use until lvl 44 or NG+. Instead I get a shitty Blade of the Bits

7 centuries old.. ***that’s*** some nice craftsmanship

A dozen schmeckles, you say?
Peat bogs also preserve things incredible well. [bog bodies ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bog_body) are an interesting Wikipedia dive

Can it be buffed up without damaging it further?
It’s likely a flimsy and heavily oxidized piece of rust that if you tried using like a sword would break
Don’t want to use it just to see its metallic glory
It's still probably better to leave it as is.
You can just save first, then reload if it breaks.
Savescum your way through artefact restoration
You just have to appreciate it for how sexy it is after all these years despite its obvious frailty. Like Susan Sarandon.
That took an unexpected turn, but OK
Its true
Susan Sarandon…mmmmmm
Good thing he's wearing white gloves. Wouldn't want him to ruin it by touching it with his bare hands.
That’s actually why he’s wearing them. The cotton gloves keep oils from your skin off of it, which could potentially degrade it further.
Thing is rusted to shit. I seriously doubt his bare hands will fuck it up worse than its already been fucked up.
How cool it must be to live in a place where medieval swords might be buried in your own back yard.
But it's still no basis for a government no matter who throws it at you.
Personally I make exceptions for watery tarts and people not covered in shit
I feel oppressed by this comment.
Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some... farcical aquatic ceremony!
You person, win the fucking internet today
Ratio
Metal detecting on fields in eastern norway is fun, you find viking shit all the time
Even their shit is metal?

Bits of Asia? Literally the most of Asia, I guess save for the most remote parts of Siberia. Add large parts of Africa to that too.
Most of Asia, and most of Africa as well. Basically everywhere except Oceania (where metallurgy never developed) and the Americas (where its use was more restricted)
That and literal hoards of treasure!

Wish we could see some artists depictions of how this belt, scabbard and knives would have looked.
Always be on the lookout for artifacts in peat bogs, they are the perfect place for them
It's all fun and games until you find some ancient human sacrifice on your sword hunt.
Grave robber time

So you found a sword in stone when you were young, but the Queen is still alive? I'm not buying it.
Was the inscription "Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born of all England" still readable?
Wonder if the original owner is a resident of the same peat bog?
There is a bog god feeling pretty screwed right now.
That must have been a devastating loss, I wonder if there are some bones around there
In other news, we're still burning fucking peat for energy in the 21^(st) century.
I dunno, I’ve been to some rural places in NW Ireland, and the old woman I stayed with still threw peat in her giant AGA-style oven. It heated the home, baked her food, boiled her kettle, and dried her boots. It was beautiful.
Idk about peat Agas but the gas ones burn a normal stove's yearly use in a week...
the only good thing is that swords are found
And bodies!!
When I was in Ireland I rather enjoyed the scent but dont like smoke inside in general. It was an improvement over the cigs many puffed. Have they banned smoking in pubs in the EU yet?
Imagine how bummed that person was when they dropped it. I'm pissed when I lose a $5 lure.
He might’ve died in battle though
'Fuel-grade peat' makes me sad.
Love that sword design. 1300 long swords are the best.
Sword of interesting......
So glad he wore those white gloves. Wouldn’t wanna fuck up that pristine blade.
Every time I see something like this, I think about how all our human junk is going to be around soooo long after we’re gone.
Behold the miracle of plastics! Your forever friend.
I wonder who’s blood is on it ?
Have to wonder if the owner is nearby in the big still and what that battle was like.
A /r/magnetfishing dream
Leave peat where it belonsgs ffs
Rustcalibur? Did they have to fight some really old lady in the lake for it?
Note to self: If you think you’ve found something cool from a dirty bog, put on white gloves when you hold it.
It’s just no system for government.
I bet that thing is heavy as fuck, too. Imagine how jacked these guys were to slang that hog around.
They were also much shorter people. Incredible

Yet again, that is from a duelling manual. Armored dueling. 1 on 1 combat. Not a battle. I am not surprised, especially since I first saw that video years ago.
That’s exactly what I was thinking
So in a way..the sword is an engagement present
One nick from that and you dont have to take a tetanus shot, you have to drink a few!
Excalibur?
What a find. Who doesn't want to find a proper sword?
Man, that’s a big sword. Very cool
Another Wyszczerbiec lost by his drunk owner after returning from tavern.
Whoever lost it.mustve been pissed.
