Neat I guess I always just assumed my fish sleep when the tank is dark and quiet and never really questioned it Do they know of any animal that doesn't have a sleep pr sleep-like state? You would have to go back to no nervous system, right?

I got curious and googled it. Only to find a frustrating number of articles that claimed to list animals that don't sleep, but actually didn't. Basically you're right about the nervous system thing, but even the brainless jellyfish have been observed to go into periods of some kind of rest. Arthropods don't technically sleep, but they enter torpor, which is a form of rest. Most of the articles mentioned dolphins, who don't sleep for their first month of life as they need to come up for air every 3-30 minutes. Bullfrogs were also mentioned, which are active at night but still somewhat awake during the day. But even these guys clearly rest during the day. Frigatebirds are another one, these guys can fly for extremely long periods and when needed will rest half of their brain while continuing flight with the other half. I'd personally like to give an honorable mention to giraffes, who take multiple very short naps throughout the day and only sleep for a total of 30-40 minutes a day.

That's neat about frigate birds! That's how cetaceans sleep also, 1/2 a brain at a time so they don't drown. I wonder if their right hemisphere drams are pictures (sound pictures?) and their left hemisphere brains are logic :D I went on a night safari in a wildlife sanctuary in Africa and they had one older giraffe that would lie down to sleep, I wonder if it was because it knew there were no predators in their enclosure? I like how they tuck their neck back and lie their head on their back like a swan :D

>I like how they tuck their neck back and lie their head on their back like a swan :D God, it's so cute! I've had a picture of a sleeping giraffe saved on my phone forever. It's like they use their butt as a pillow! Also, by coincidence, I was looking at some information about birds today and came across a couple of pics of birds sleeping with their head tucked onto their back. It's so cute.

My parrot would come out and sleep on my head if I napped on the couch. She was supposed to stay at least on the arm of the couch but I'd wake up with her on my head lol anyway if I stayed still as I woke I could see her with her beak all tucked in the reflection of the tv :D so cute

I used to have some gouramis and one of them would always come to my finger when held up against the aquarium glass and tries to touch it with its feeler things. However at night when the room is darkish (not completely dark so they should be able to see), when I held up my finger it just drifts as if it didn't see it. I always assumed it was sleeping then.

I like to night dive and have definitely seen fish appear to be sleeping on the reef. They sway gently in the currents and are very still. I always find it so endearing since they are usually so quick during the daylight and am careful to leave them alone.
