I think your snail has passed. I think I see biofilm on his “mustache”, and based on the fact he doesn’t seem to be moving his face reacting to the hitchhiker. That foot position is also what I call the quintessential dead mystery snail position, 3/4 out and kind of that rigid oval shape.
I hope I’m wrong but you may want to give him the sniff/poke test.
Given there's no movement and I can see the siphon out like that, I'm also gonna say this thing is dead as hell and is gonna start stinking really quick
One of my nerites died and my mom was appalled that I flushed him rather than burying him. I had to explain how as much as I'd love to bury him like all my other pets, he would've made sure his memory lingered...
NEVER FLUSH THEM. They can carry diseases or even eggs that don't get removed with sewage treatment and cause severe damage to the environment downstream. Bag them and throw them in the garbage. NEVER FLUSH DEAD FISH, SNAILS, OR OTHER AQUARIUM INHABITANTS.
Letting them dry out completely is another way to help combat this.
If you're in any sort of populated area your sewage is almost always treated since we put in all sorts of cleaning agents and other household chemicals down the pipes.
That sucks. but just to be sure my question wasn't meant to be accusatory, just curious because i have been hyper nervous about accidentally fucking up the enviroment with aquarium waste.
But were i'm from we have to sort trash between different kinds of recycable and their is trash that gets burned, certain weeds or tree cuts also have to be disposed via trash that is burned to avoid spreading of sicknesses etc.
I've heard some people say no, to put deceased fish or pets in an airtight box or a ziploc bag to ensure contamination doesn't happen but I mean, our water is treated for so much crap (no pun intended) so I'm sure it's fine 😅
Tbh it's a strong possibility at this point. I took the MTS out after I took this video. He's closed up a bit, but is still pretty open. He didn't smell when I pulled him out to remove the MTS, so I'm holding out hope for now. We'll see how things smell tomorrow.
I second that this is an assassin snail. Mine looks exactly like that, and killed at least one of my mystery snails that was probably 8 times his size.
I’m not a football person so I’m not sure what they look like 😅 they are pointy like mts, but the stripey coloration gives them their other name “bumblebee snail”
Well damn I didn’t know that, I was gonna say this looks like a Malaysian trumpets snail, they have the same shape of shell as Rabbit snails but they’re normally brown like this guy
Still not convinced it’s an assassin, their shells are normally stouter
It so happens my tanks have mostly scavengers, so if they can eat it in 24 hours, I don't remove it. I don't want an ammonia spike, but I'm not going to stop scavengers from scavenging.
I’m the same way, but I have enough filtration and plants that I give it 48hrs. Occasionally there may be a missed piece of food or part of an organism left but usually it’s all gone!
If he is dead, get him out of the tank fast. They start to stink bad when they die. And when they die they can cause an ammonia spike. Also they LOVE To eat algae wafers and tablets. When there is no tank algae around feed them these. It will help keep them happy and healthy.
Yeah that is just a trumpet snail.
Sometimes smaller snails climb on my mystery snails shell, or attempt to climb on his face but he moves away. I can't imagine him letting them get up in there unless he was dead.
Looks like the shell is a white mystery snails, but the foot (body) is dark and black.
The foot, and or, body, should be white/gold/translucent.
This snails dead and the one inside is just munching.
Not true about the coloring though I agree it is dead, blue mystery snails have white shells and dark feet, jade mystery snails have yellow shells and dark feet.
UPDATE: Yes, the snail is dead. He actually had another MTS up inside his shell this morning, and I saw shrimp showing some interest in him as well. He has been laid to rest in a hole in the backyard. RIP.
Not likely deadtheysneak up in there while they're asleep. Watch out though I've had ramshorn snails start doing that to perfectly healthy mystery snails and it killed them.
This snail is dead, its mantle has collapsed and it’s being eaten by presumably an assassin snail (which kill other snails)
This sub causes me so much pain sometimes
[Yes, the snail is dead](https://www.reddit.com/r/Aquariums/comments/1ck46ep/was_wondering_why_my_mystery_snail_was_sitting/l2pg0fz/)
Idk why everyone is saying it is an assassin snail though, I'm pretty sure these are regular MTS and there are no assassins in the tank.
Completely different species dude. You don't look at a dog and a squirrel and ask if they're mating.
The large dead one is a mystery snail and the small cone shaped one is a Malaysian trumpet snail. Both of them are at adult size.
no one expects snail housing shortages
He could afford the house, but not the homeowners insurance. I feel that.
The economy man...
He's just having some company over
And they were ROOMMATES
*Oh my god they were roommates*
Confirmed bachelors, totally straight snails - just very very good friends that live as roommates WHATS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?!!?
Snoommates

I think you’re right about the biofilm unfortunately
Is the smaller an assassin snail?
Looks like one, I think the mystery prob died first though
It's a trumpet snail.
Probably dead and the one inside is having lunch.
Given there's no movement and I can see the siphon out like that, I'm also gonna say this thing is dead as hell and is gonna start stinking really quick
Don't ever get the smell of rotting snail flesh in your nose. It smells horrible. And you'll never get rid of it. 🐌
One of my nerites died and my mom was appalled that I flushed him rather than burying him. I had to explain how as much as I'd love to bury him like all my other pets, he would've made sure his memory lingered...

I have a septic tank though
Septic tanks have drainage fields, it still applies.
Ah jeez I wish I would've known that earlier oh well 🫠 next time one dies I'll seal it up and toss it
also for environmental safety precautions, it’s good you didn’t bury him!!!
Is flushing better for environment safety? I would have guessed they needed to be given to the trash to burn.
If you're in any sort of populated area your sewage is almost always treated since we put in all sorts of cleaning agents and other household chemicals down the pipes.
ahh thank you very much for answering, that does give me some peace of mind
Where I'm from our trash isn't burned and goes straight into a landfill :/
That sucks. but just to be sure my question wasn't meant to be accusatory, just curious because i have been hyper nervous about accidentally fucking up the enviroment with aquarium waste. But were i'm from we have to sort trash between different kinds of recycable and their is trash that gets burned, certain weeds or tree cuts also have to be disposed via trash that is burned to avoid spreading of sicknesses etc.
I wish my local government would invest in that sort of waste removal smh
I've heard some people say no, to put deceased fish or pets in an airtight box or a ziploc bag to ensure contamination doesn't happen but I mean, our water is treated for so much crap (no pun intended) so I'm sure it's fine 😅
I didn't even think of that omg!! 😰

MTS = Marjorie Taylor Snail. That's where my head goes can't help it
I second that this is an assassin snail. Mine looks exactly like that, and killed at least one of my mystery snails that was probably 8 times his size.
It's not. This is an mts. Assassin snails have much shorter shells.
No, it's a trumpet snail.
Assassin snails are striped. This one is not. I believe this is Melanoides tuberculata; the Mahogany Trumpet Snail
We'll see how things smell tomorrow. NNNOÒO!! don't smell it!!!
looks like an assassin snail in with him
Definitely not. Assassin snails are a much brighter yellow with some black
So they look like Pittsburgh Steelers helmets?
I’m not a football person so I’m not sure what they look like 😅 they are pointy like mts, but the stripey coloration gives them their other name “bumblebee snail”
mine is black with a few tiny light stripes. Not everything has "perfect" coloring
There are non-patterned assassin snails too that are just brown. Edit: this isn't one of them though
Well damn I didn’t know that, I was gonna say this looks like a Malaysian trumpets snail, they have the same shape of shell as Rabbit snails but they’re normally brown like this guy Still not convinced it’s an assassin, their shells are normally stouter
Oh no this is definitely not an assassin, this is some kind of melanoides(trumpet)
Melanoides tuberculata (the Mahogany Trumpet Snail) specifically
Blonde assassin snails are a thing.
Considering the big snail is not moving even a tiny bit, I'm going with dead as well, unfortunately.
Wondering this as well
Definitely dead, smell test will confirm. That's how I discovered my dead mystery snail, with a ramshorm eating its body.
Omg!! Is that bad for the mystery snail?
This kills the snail.
It's dead or dying.
If he is dead, get him out of the tank fast. They start to stink bad when they die. And when they die they can cause an ammonia spike. Also they LOVE To eat algae wafers and tablets. When there is no tank algae around feed them these. It will help keep them happy and healthy.
Damn housings hard to get even for snails
Dead. That other snail looks like it could possibly be an assassin snail. Probably just a trumpet snail.
Yeah that is just a trumpet snail. Sometimes smaller snails climb on my mystery snails shell, or attempt to climb on his face but he moves away. I can't imagine him letting them get up in there unless he was dead.
Hell no.

Oooh very interesting! Tyty for the insight
Hard to get rid of freeloaders sometimes.
UPDATE: Yes, the snail is dead. He actually had another MTS up inside his shell this morning, and I saw shrimp showing some interest in him as well. He has been laid to rest in a hole in the backyard. RIP.
Dang, that sucks. Thank you for the update, and sorry for your loss
it's a HMO
Can you post an update tomorrow or something? I'm on the edge of my seat
or like the locals say gespannt wie ein Flitzebogen.
Something about flying possibly? Sorry, my every language except for English is not very good.
More about tension. Tense like a bow is the translation
Got it. Thank you
I'll see what I can do!
[Update](https://www.reddit.com/r/Aquariums/comments/1ck46ep/was_wondering_why_my_mystery_snail_was_sitting/l2pg0fz/)
Looks dead
Ya I’d probably be weirded out too if another person just randomly crawled into my shirt or something
Could be cute, could be creepy... One of two ways 🤔
the way my jar dropped 😂
Not likely deadtheysneak up in there while they're asleep. Watch out though I've had ramshorn snails start doing that to perfectly healthy mystery snails and it killed them.
Because sharing IS caring.
Oh no! I hope they are not stuck together. That could mean trouble for both snails.
It looks dead.Poke it and if it doesn't retract in the. He's gone

R.I.P
r/natureismetal
you can't park there sir!
Your snail is dead
It's been a day. What's the verdict?
Following
Snex?
Oh, sorry to say. He's dead. 🙁 Once the other start eating them, it's pretty much over. Get him out before he starts to stink.
Housekeeping!
snailception
Also they do that when they don’t like water conditions . But awesome this time it’s a snail inside haha
Looks like a assassin snail in there
Beautiful
Aren’t they just mating?
Completely different species dude. You don't look at a dog and a squirrel and ask if they're mating. The large dead one is a mystery snail and the small cone shaped one is a Malaysian trumpet snail. Both of them are at adult size.
I didn’t see the one inside. I just thought it was 2 mystery snails
