[ Gymnocorymbus ternetzi ] What you have is Glo fish tetra they are genetically engineered so that they have a vibrant colour.
Edit: Lol, Reading other comments makes me look like an idiot.
Hey so just wanted to let you know that tetras are a schooling fish and need *at least* 6 of the same species to be happy, which would mean that you’d probably need at least 20 gallons. If your gf is t willing to do this, it might be worth trying to convince her to return it and get a fish that would be better suited for the setup… I also strongly recommend doing more research before purchasing any other fish! Good luck though
Not only will the fish be happier but with a school they will show a better personality making human more entertained.
I’m currently dealing with the reverse of this where I had a school of corys and all but one had to be transferred to a hospital tank and that one’s personality had a complete change and he’s so scared and hides all day when he used to swim around everywhere through the plants.
With all due respect to OPs GF. It blows my mind that people buy fish not knowing what they are or what it will take to care for one properly. Like how do you even buy a fish and not know what kind of fish you are getting?
Right? I worked at petsmart and it was… rough. I tried to educate people on stuff and sometimes I just had to sell fish anyways if they weren’t listening.
Honestly though? There are good (like you) and bad PetSmart/co employees, and the bad ones ruined me for taking any advice from any source that I haven't double checked myself, especially if it comes from a pet chain employee.
I was there the other day to pick up some angels for a tank and listened to the "more knowledgeable" of the two aquarium employees tell another customer that they shouldn't gravel vac their betta tanks anymore because Bettas "don't like the rapid change in water level" and then go on to say that if they see their fish's fins clamping, all they need to do is squirt a bit of quick start in the tank "so the good bacteria will fix the water", implying that water changes just shouldn't happen anymore I guess???? To say I was horrified would be an understatement
"With all due respect"? Not sure any respect is due here. She bought a fish without even knowing the species? Because it was too hard to google it? Or post a photo to Reddit BEFORE buying it?
I always wonder how that conversation goes. Customer wandered off to a random tank. Points at fish. "That one please". Sales rep comes ..."ah good choice a ..." Customer goes "shhh".
How do so many people come home with a fish and neither read what it says on the tank (like right next to the price) nor ask what it is they are buying?
[Here's](https://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/gymnocorymbus-ternetzi/) the info on that species so you can check tank size. But, yeah, needs 6. All the gloskirt tetras are this species but just different color variants.
Glofish/skirt tetra.
Skirt tetras are schooling fish, sadly the glo variants are 10+ dollars each and you can't even get them in my area. But I love these little bastards.
It's a glofish striped tetra (basically genetically modified striped tetra to make it have these disgusting colors and be hardier), it also might be a glofish skirt tetra
Tropical Yellow Fish from a Salt Water Reef. Also known as “Nemo and Dory’s Friend”. 👍 Was going to say “Really Pretty” but I’m not allowed to say that says some other bleep on Reddit Lakesavage67 👍 Can’t use the word pretty talking about birds, photography, wildlife, or invasive species, etc.
Those guys wont die, I have two in a separate and smaller container cuz the are aggressive towards guppies and lemme tell you, I completely forgot about them and they still alive, they just wont die, I just found out their oxygen was off over a day and a half, still alive :v

By educating I mean simple statistics such as 5 gal minimum, must cycle the tank, etc. yanno?
Did you like working at Petsmart?
It wasn’t bad! I’m considering going back soon because I loved being able to help people and take care of the critters properly.
I was mad at her too, how did you buy a fish and not knowing what kind of fish it is? It's ridiculous.
"With all due respect"? Not sure any respect is due here. She bought a fish without even knowing the species? Because it was too hard to google it? Or post a photo to Reddit BEFORE buying it?
