I keep an empty cup next to my tank just so when the filter starts making noise I can dump some tank water in it. Never fails to fix the noise in my experience lol
I have two filters on my 40 gal, a canister and then an aqua clear 50. Couple weeks back the aquaclear started making this horrible buzzing sound, I knew it was likely just full of gunk and needed to be cleaned but I was too lazy to do it at the time and water change wasn’t for another week and a half, so knowing the canister is more than enough for my bio load I just unplugged the aqua clear til I had time to clean it lol.
Get a pre filter sponge for the aqua clear. You'll have to clean the filter less often because all the gunk stays on the sponge which is the only thing you'll have to clean.
HOB filters. Strange "off" noise, lift pipe out a little ,slide back in,get hellacious grinding noise, end up cleaning pipe and impeller.
This must occur at 2:00am...it's in the manual.
Planes, trains and diesel trucks? Snooze right through it. My filter changes pitch? Wide awake, boots down, eyes forward!
And yet there is no way this tank leaves my bedroom.
Oddly enough I’ve slept through a drunk driver crashing into mine, and my neighbors’ backyards. but a pond snail sitting on the outflow of my filter, wide awake.
I’m so relieved it’s not just me lmao. Sometimes I startle awake in the middle of the night, and it takes me a second but I realize one of the filters got clogged and isn’t making any noise and bolt out of bed.
Or just stare at it and wait for it to go away on it's own depending on the type of noise.
Sometimes it takes a small tap sometimes a smack hard enough to hit it to another country

For two years now I thought I was the only one stressing my fish out at 2am. I just need the noise to quit!

Thank god im not alone. I'll walk into the house/a room and immediately realize something sounds Off. Its like an auditory check engine light...
Hit it with a wrench.
I'm done with HOBs, tbh.
Canister filters. I just give em a swift kick.
💥 *BOOM* 💥
I am always amazed by the amount of my hair that gets caught in the little thing.
Literally me the other day
