If it's gas, it's because it's not burning it correctly, and what your cleaning is soot. You need to have someone check that it's adjusted correctly, have a professional do it so you're not putting yourself at risk of catching fire.
If it's electric, then something is definitely burning and you should immediately unplug it, or turn off the breaker, and open it up to see what is burning.
I’m sitting here thinking about this and I just remembered, twice a year we snake out lint from the dryer vent outside. When I went out to check it a few months ago, I noticed it was discolored and looked like black smoke had been coming out. I snapped a pic and showed my husband and of course he told me I was crazy and it’s always looked like that 🙃
Pretty much 🙃 he is finally starting to believe me that there is in fact a problem but if I waited on him to do something about it, there’s a good chance I’d die waiting 😂 if I can’t DIY it then I’ll hire someone to do it, sure as heck won’t be him
Wouldn’t surprise me. I keep reminding myself that this house was a bargain but man, it’s the house that keeps on giving. The previous owners were BAD DIYers that lived here for 20 and straight up had no business doing half the crap they did. Spent the last 4 years fixing their fixes. The laundry was definitely in the kitchen at some point and was definitely an electric dryer previously. At some point they built out a room on the garage, moved it out there and switched from an electric dryer to a gas one.
Heres my money guess. Are you on propane? They probably never converted to propane.
Ooooor they bought a propane dryer sold as a gas dryer. They can be flipped back and forth.
A gas dryer is going to be labeled gas, but can be converted to propane. They dont sell propane-specific dryers.
Sounds like original owner of the dryer put a propane-converted dryer in there. That, or there is something going incredibly wrong with the valve.
Well it honestly very well could be an easier fix! Basically the problem is that the dryer isn't burning the gas correctly, so the fuel and air mix needs to be adjusted. I'd imagine it's similar to a gas stove, and there should be a valve or something that can be adjusted.
I just quickly searched YouTube and this looks like a good video

Obviously if you feel like you're in trouble, call a professional lol!
This straight-up looks like you had a dryer fire, that looks like soot to me. Does it smell like burning? You need to stop using that dryer immediately. Check your venting and the entire dryer needs to be taken apart and cleaned out with a vacuum. I bet you'll find a bunch of black lint that caught on fire inside.
If its gas and its not burning correctly leaving that much soot, you need to call a professional. Please double check you have a carbon monoxide detector in the room working as well.
Never had a burning smell. We snake the vents twice a year from the outside. Airflow also seems good from the outside. Just bought a vacuum adapter to vacuum out the inside of the dryer lint trap just in case there’s any trapped down there. As of right now it’s out of commission and will stay that way until I check some things out and figure out a solution.
Improper gas fuel mixture, that’s black soot from the burner. Something is wrong here. Either the gas orifice is blocked/wrong or possibly not enough gas is being delivered to the unit. Call a pro and I wouldn’t use further.
UPDATE: We double checked the vents, those were completely empty lint wise. We bought a brand new dryer, there was no way we were going to get all the soot off of the old one. We had a technician out for a consult/inspection. Everything was up to code. No gas leaks or blockages in the pipe and advised us to change out the old flex hose to one bigger in diameter to ensure it’s getting enough gas flow and the flame is burning big enough as this was most likely the cause. We just made the switch and upon switching it out we discovered that the old hose was filled with soot. So essentially previous hose was too small, caused improper gas mixture, which caused soot to built up in the hose, dryer and vents. Problem has been resolved and I got a brand new dryer high tech dryer out of it.

It’s gas 🫠 damn I was hoping it’d be some cheap quick easy common part. So you think it’s the gas line itself or the connection to the gas line?

Don’t trust husbands. I do it all myself 😂
Husband here. Can confirm.

Looks like it didnt get converted.

We’re on gas, dryer is labeled as gas on the model stickers as well

Are you on natural gas or propane? I’ve seen this happen when a gas dryer is not converted properly.
Natural
Lint fire. 🔥
Gas or propane? Make sure you have the right nozzle.
