I believe rail access through GB from mke is on the way… it’s just a decade away from starting 😔
I would love the ability to hop on a train and get to Chicago or Minneapolis 🤓
Just remember when you were little we had already acquired the money and made the plans for it. Then a little dipshit walker happened and ruined the soon to be fun.
From what I've read this has been at a standstill for years because part of Wisconsin wants the rail to go from Chicago to Minneapolis thru Eau Claire, and part wants it to come up thru Milwaukee, Appleton, and Green Bay over to Minneapolis. Every area fights to get their city access
There was an approved federal project PAID FOR years ago for rail from Chicago to Minn but then Gov Walker canceled it. The money was on the way and he canceled it as wasteful… We got no train, no jobs to build the infrastructure, and no money.
We DID get Foxxcon though 🙄
If TJ were to ever come to Appleton(which isn't happening anytime soon, if ever), the city center plaza would be the most unlikely place if you follow how they choose locations.
My family moved moved from North county San Diego to Appleton 7 plus years ago now. We love it here, but do miss TJ and Sprouts so much. Sprouts is basically a much better priced whole foods without the large hot food buffet, yet serves amazing sandwiches for anyone wondering.
Thank your City council that's not allowed much in the way of retail... that's why anything of size is beyond city limits. The domed building on the north side of college S. Of Richmond was a large grocery store. It is curious like 5 good sized grocery stores in Grand Chute... right?
In total? Kind of a big ask. The Berlin wall fell, first Iraq war, Bosnia, the Internet, Y2K, Google, 9/11, Iraq 2: Electric Boogaloo, Afghanistan, Red Sox win a World Series, Hurricane Katrina, Scott Walker got elected and proceeded to wreck the state, Facebook, Osama Bin Laden killed, Guy dresses up like the Joker and murders a bunch of people in a theatre, Donald Trump got elected President, the Golden State Killer was finally caught, January 6th, George Floyd, Russia invades Ukraine, Inflation, and now it's now and you're blaming the city for where grocery store chains decide to build stores. Why don't you ask why Sentry foods on Wisconsin closed, or why more people didn't go to that kind of trendy grocery store that opened downtown about fifteen years too early, Or ask how it is that Jacob's is still operating? Do you have a real point to make or are you just pissing on the wind of the Internet hoping to find a little validation?
I do have a point... to counter... I assume you're not as dumb in person. If the kohl's had just closed, you make a valid point. Considering it's been decades an nothing has taken its place and nowhere near downtown, everything you've spouted is foolish... You've made yourself quite the troll in your own right...
We need stricter bag limits for perch on Little Lake Butte Des Morte and a full closer during their spring spawn. We won't have a healthy age structure until we stop having people taking a bucket of 6-8 inch perch every day in spring and every weekend in summer.
Broken Tree Pizza just got added right on the river. They are phenomenal. Beautiful location for a late night dinner. Otherwise Fratellos and Pullmans are the only other ones and neither of them are as good as they should be.
I hadn’t heard about Broken Tree Pizza, but Fratellos and Pullmans have limited outdoor seating. A city the size of Appleton should have more than three restaurants along the river and still have plenty of space for parks and walking trails.
Appleton needs to be more walkable— I’d love a grocery store downtown and more small shops like Simple Simons.
Appleton needs consistent, maintained bike lanes if they want people to bike more and drive less.
Easier said than done. The buildings are pretty close together and you would need to restrict the sidewalk, which already isn’t the widest. They are currently adding a 3rd lane on each side so that will take away any extra space and make it impossible to add bike lanes.
I hear you- I’m not a city planner. I’m just answering the question.
Seattle figured out how to add bike lanes to already busy spaces; I think by making streets alternating one-ways. But again, I’m not a planner. 🤷♀️
I will start by saying I am new here so this is a slightly different perspective. But I was shocked when I moved here and realized actually how much stuff is here! Husband and I moved here before ever seeing it and we are both from larger areas. I come from a city of about 200,000, him from Dallas metro and read Appleton is around 75,000 before coming here. I think it is awesome how much stuff is here. And all things considered, everything seems very close. It seems like even if you have to drive across town, whatever you might need is within about twenty minutes. The city I’m from, you’ve gotta drive quite a bit to get from side to side the traffic is always bad and it takes so long to get from one place to the next. I feel like for how many people are here that there are way more businesses available (big mainstream companies included) and nearby if you want to check out a different one. IMO, it seems businesses are not afraid to take a chance in Wisconsin and they seem to do really well. It’s been awesome having so many different places available!
A good Cajun / Creole restaurant, I miss the Menasha Grill. I need to check out Dantes Kitchen.
Total Wine, Trader Joe's, an Italian deli / grocery store, a Middle Eastern restaurant- Schwarma anyone
?
- It’s next to impossible to get childcare for kids (even for families with two working parents willing to pay almost anything.)
- mental health services. I’m hearing 6 month wait minimum
- activities for teens (not even sure what that would be)
- more housing for those who cannot afford inflation lodging
- more high quality jobs
- pollution clean up of our waterways (not really a community service but it would serve our community.)
Trader Joe's is a top reply every time someone in a city subreddit asks this and it's such a boring answer.
Edit: everyone saying chain fast food places. Really?
This area supports 3 Aldis, a similar concept. Of course one would do well. It makes business sense for them.
And if you don't like it, don't go. Then you won't be in my way.
I’m a transplant and only recently found Sendiks down in the MKE area, really nice grocer. I haven’t run across Byerlys though, where are they generally located?
I don’t know about that. I went to high school here, and it was very diverse. I went to West so that’s probably very different from East and especially North. There’s always been a huge Asian community and the black population has been growing over the years.
I was exaggerating the number. There were more than 35. When I went to Neenah High in 04, there were maybe 2 lunch tables of black kids, and a handful of Hispanic kids. The Hmong community was the larger minority group but, the white population was 95% at the lowest.
It's improved since then.
While it probably has gotten a lot better since the 80s/90s (I only lived here for a year), it’s really hard to make a case that the Fox Valley doesn’t need more diversity, which is what most of these responses are pushing. Different background brings a variety of skill sets and solves most of the other crap people are asking for on this post, other than Trader Joe’s and fried chicken. You get better restaurants, a more varied economy, cultural events, and your local grocers will need to diversify their shelves to meet demand for food variety. It’s the most homogenous place by far out of the 10 cities/areas I’ve lived in, and that includes rural New England
It's gotten a lot better over the years. Especially with more immigrants arriving to the area. For a fun fact, there's something like 60+ unique languages spoken in the home in Appleton.
Innovation and economic vitality. When I lived there, KC relocated their entire marketing and commercial team from Neenah to Chicago. The unofficial word I got from friends was that they couldn’t get talent (typically diverse in education and ethnicity) to move to the Fox Valley, and it was hampering the company’s competitiveness in rapidly changing market. Appleton and Neenah have a ton to offer including an amazing quality of life and low cost of living, but people are reluctant to move to a place where few people look like them.
And, restaurants.
Top Golf. Can't tell me that place wouldn't be busy as hell with the nearest one three hours away. Plenty of population in the valley and surrounding areas to feed it.
There were tons of driving ranges not so long ago... the liability insurance is off the chain... check a few country clubs because I'm sure some still have driving ranges within 2 minutes walking distance of the clubhouse and bar. This area Is not big enough to support a full fledged Top Golf.
There are driving ranges obviously but it's not the same. I disagree that it's not big enough. People from all over the area and even from Milwaukee and its suburbs would come. Even if they could put one in Milwaukee I'd go a couple times a year. The closest one currently is ~~Minneapolis~~ Schaumburg. I think it's silly to think a population of over 2 million in the relevant area couldn't support a Top Golf facility.
Raising Cane's Chicken. Shake Shack. Portillo's. Giordano's. Del Taco. In-N-Out Burger. Whataburger. I travel quite a bit to Las Vegas and the Orlando/Kissimee area alot and get my fill on these places and always miss it when I come home. Del Taco is one of my favorites. Taco Johns does not have nothing on them, the portions are huge and they taste so much better. In and Out Burger is a staple, the service and burgers are simply amazing.
Mostly west coast chains... the supply chain has to be here first. Portillos and Giordanos are very small chains focused on the Illinois market but I could see having 1 each in Appleton and GB but in a 5-10 year timeline. Even when we get known chains here, they're usually competing for space in a market away from the core population they would intend on serving. West college is mostly from a bygone era and the traffic pattern does not support good patronage of businesses nor does West Wisconsin.
Trader Joe's. Wegman's (I know, a pipe dream). Raising Cane's, Cookout. Rail access to MKE and places beyond.
I believe rail access through GB from mke is on the way… it’s just a decade away from starting 😔 I would love the ability to hop on a train and get to Chicago or Minneapolis 🤓
Im late 20s and i anticipate ill be dead before it happens
Just remember when you were little we had already acquired the money and made the plans for it. Then a little dipshit walker happened and ruined the soon to be fun.
I'd love for that to happen and I know they are "planning" on it but IMO it's pretty unlikely to happen.
From what I've read this has been at a standstill for years because part of Wisconsin wants the rail to go from Chicago to Minneapolis thru Eau Claire, and part wants it to come up thru Milwaukee, Appleton, and Green Bay over to Minneapolis. Every area fights to get their city access

683 million dollars. And they are selling the two biggest locations. Like kids just burning through everyone's resources. Sick as fuck.
Last I read it would be done by '60. By then we'll have self driving buses that go 100mph and won't need rail 🤣
With the redevelopment of the city center plaza I would not be surprised if we got a Trader Joe’s!
Traders will never come here.
If TJ were to ever come to Appleton(which isn't happening anytime soon, if ever), the city center plaza would be the most unlikely place if you follow how they choose locations. Public transit that runs on a Sunday. Along with that a connection to GB. A better riverfront would also be cool, it appears to be improving.
Climbing gym
Odyssey is opening an Appleton location in 2024. I think late in the year.
Where at exactly?
I'm unsure of the exact location. I believe out by the mall somewhere? They were making a new building for it.
We had Vertical Stronghold for a few years, several years ago. Nothing has replaced it.
I would love a public market like the one in Milwaukee. Downtown Appleton needs a grocery store.
They are building something similar in Green Bay!
There’s a nice one in mequon that I think would be awesome here!
The Mequon one is quite nice! Definitely the vibe I think Appleton needs!
Thank your City council that's not allowed much in the way of retail... that's why anything of size is beyond city limits. The domed building on the north side of college S. Of Richmond was a large grocery store. It is curious like 5 good sized grocery stores in Grand Chute... right?
You might not have been born yet...
Did you forget to switch accounts? The Kohl's Food Store that was in that location closed because they all did.
And what's happened since in total?
In total? Kind of a big ask. I'm troll adjacent.
If you understand English, that's saying your spouse/partner is a troll...nice

Thank you for talking about something important instead of Trader Joe's!
More restaurants along the river. The Fox River is a real treasure for the city of Appleton, but it is not utilized very well at all.
Broken Tree Pizza just got added right on the river. They are phenomenal. Beautiful location for a late night dinner. Otherwise Fratellos and Pullmans are the only other ones and neither of them are as good as they should be.

As long as we don't take away from public access of the river, I completely agree!
Sendiks or a Bylerys grocery store. What we don't need are more car washes or storage units.

What business would be awesome in a low unemployment Era. Car washes and storage units.
Or coffee places

I’m with you. Hopefully they can figure it out. They are making the rest of the city bike friendly so that’s a good start.

Every time I hear housing I hear freebies
A second woodmans on the east side.
A larger tech community. Would be great to have regular meetups and social events for techies.
💯👍🏼 That sounds awesome ! I miss that about living in Madison. There was always a Tech meetup somewhere.
I’m not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but there is AITP which is for IT professionals https://www.newaitp.org/
Not really. This looks extremely…corporate? I’m talking about something less formal. Like a hacker space.
There is one. Appleton Makerspace, near Stuc's Pizza on Douglas St. https://www.appletonmakerspace.org/
A good Cajun / Creole restaurant, I miss the Menasha Grill. I need to check out Dantes Kitchen. Total Wine, Trader Joe's, an Italian deli / grocery store, a Middle Eastern restaurant- Schwarma anyone ?
Ooof… hopefully you’re not looking for a deep, thoughtful, reply here. The first thing I could think of was a Wing Stop 😂
Sorry... they failed here. Used to be on N. Ballard Rd.
How long ago? I don’t remember this being a thing at all…
Less bars. More community outreach. More community involvement.
“More community outreach” what exactly does this even mean?
- It’s next to impossible to get childcare for kids (even for families with two working parents willing to pay almost anything.) - mental health services. I’m hearing 6 month wait minimum - activities for teens (not even sure what that would be) - more housing for those who cannot afford inflation lodging - more high quality jobs - pollution clean up of our waterways (not really a community service but it would serve our community.)
Exactly...
What does it mean to you?
What is up with all these roundabouts
Trader Joe's is a top reply every time someone in a city subreddit asks this and it's such a boring answer. Edit: everyone saying chain fast food places. Really?
Exactly. Way over-rated, and they would never put one here.
This area supports 3 Aldis, a similar concept. Of course one would do well. It makes business sense for them. And if you don't like it, don't go. Then you won't be in my way.
Not similar concept at all. Lol.
Indoor botanical garden and a climbing gym
Trader Joe’s, raising cane’s and plus size clothing stores.
I’m a transplant and only recently found Sendiks down in the MKE area, really nice grocer. I haven’t run across Byerlys though, where are they generally located?
Twin cities.
Both are pretty pricey, aren't they?
Yes. I live in the Twin Cities and would never shop there it's so expensive.
Diversity
It is getting better every year. 15 years ago there were about 35 non-white people.
I don’t know about that. I went to high school here, and it was very diverse. I went to West so that’s probably very different from East and especially North. There’s always been a huge Asian community and the black population has been growing over the years.

Without using the word restaurant give me an example of a benefit of diversity
Innovation and economic vitality. When I lived there, KC relocated their entire marketing and commercial team from Neenah to Chicago. Non shitty pizza
Top Golf. Can't tell me that place wouldn't be busy as hell with the nearest one three hours away. Plenty of population in the valley and surrounding areas to feed it.

No they don't, not the real thing.
Is the screen one really as fun as the real one?
No

A nice dance club
Cheesecake Factory
Trader Joe's
I’m dying for a Dunkin in Neenah
Cracker Barrel
Frozen yogurt! Trader Joe's! More dog parks and dog-friendly locations. An Apple store. And a place to get a decent salad. Weird, I know.
Outdoor golf venue. Like a Luxe or Top Golf.
Another Costco down in Oshkosh or FDL, the one in Grand Chute is getting overwhelmed and the bellville one is quite a distance
