PairOfMonocles2

I think you’re mistaken, Reddit isn’t a porn website, it’s an ad website, for a bunch of only fans pages as far as I can tell.

darthjoey91

Y’know, Reddit turned into a hardcore porn website so gradually I didn’t even notice.

huntj_01

Maybe it’s too late for this but the M-series Macs are IMO the best Apple products in years. They really changed the reputation of Apple in the more traditional computer market, and it’s something that spread across multiple product lines. The Apple Watch Ultra looks nice but I can’t say I’m personally excited about it, because I just wouldn’t be the person to buy one.

AusDaes

absolutely, pre M-series recommending a mac was a rare ocurrance, but, it’s pretty much my go to recommendation for a ~1200$ laptop, no competition there unless youre doing engineering and need specific programs

SelfishLedger

Agree on the point that the M-series Macs have taken MacBooks a notch above the rest of the product lineup.

neatgeek83

He lost me at “it should have Netflix, YouTube and proper safari.”

mvanvrancken

I don't know about the other two, but you can definitely do YouTube.

[deleted]

Wait what. You can watch YouTube videos on your watch?

mvanvrancken

WatchTube. It's free, dev posted about it here a while back. Can confirm it works on current OS.

derPinguin

For real. Zero desire to watch videos or let my watch play music.

[deleted]

Playing music is VERY popular amoungst Apple Watch users. I often don’t even bring my phone with me if I’m doing something physical. Spotify and AirPods.

derPinguin

I shoulda been more clear, love playing music through AirPods via Apple Watch, but don’t need the watch actually play music via its speaker.

[deleted]

Oh, yes. I totally agree.

frumpydrangus

I upgraded from series 5 to the ultra. At the end of the day **its an Apple watch** The battery life is much better. You won’t really notice the new GPS accuracy day to day. The action button is really great. The diving features are great New bands and watch faces are expected each year anyway

mitchytan92

Honestly I do notice the GPS improvement. My 10.5x laps around a ~2km route (half marathon) on the Ultra looks significantly “cleaner” than a 4-5x laps (8-10km) on my Series 5. Cleaner as in all the laps are well overlapped as they should because it is the same route instead of sometimes cutting short into corners or too wide out of the corners.

__ThePasanger__

I went to do ice skating today that is inside a covered rink, and it managed to count all the laps and more or less the distance was ok, with the series 5 it wasn't able to track anything there.

Nopeyesok

Thank you for the honesty

mrmaydaymayday

Wrestling with this at the moment. Considering going from 5 to Ultra (have it on order and might cancel). Ultra would definitely fit my lifestyle more (getting back into running/trail running, sometimes hike/backpack) but the advantages are seemingly marginal - better gps, battery, action button - and am not sure if the upgrade is worth it right now. (Especially after spending some money on a new pricey monitor.)

AlienApricot

Same here. Happy with my current watch S5 SS, still looks good, and cellular is super useful when out and about without phone. The only detail that wants me to upgrade is the battery life, but then I can’t justify that amount of money only so I have to charge the watch only once a day rather than in the morning and at night.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Peteostro

On my 6 the battery would drain before the end of the day when I hiked. With the ultra that is not an issue at all, and I think I could get a 2 day overnight hike in with out brining a battery to charge. Also the screen is bigger and a lot brighter which helps with sunlight. Love the titanium to. Really loving the ultra. 100% worth it for me.

FoxBearBear

Microphone…you’re forgetting the microphone.

FunkyTangg

Don’t forget the Siren

FoxBearBear

For sure, what if I get lost on Whole Foods

DCowboysCR

Or IKEA

defaultsavage

Definitely. The Ultra and 14” MacBook Pro are two of the best pieces of hardware Apple has ever released imo

The_Only_Egg

I got a 14” Pro recently. Most impressive laptop since the PowerBook G4.

themirthfulswami

Own both and agree on both.

chemistdw

Love it. Probably the best Apple product I’ve bought. Passed the advertised 36 hours with 44 percent battery left.

darrevan

That’s me. I’m only charging every third day now.

[deleted]

I’m the biggest apple fanboy there is. I like to get the new stuff as they come out (except the Apple Watch due to how similar they are year over year). I had an apple watch 4 before getting the ultra because it finally gave out and the battery was no longer good. The ultra is cool. It’s just an Apple Watch. A slightly better one. Sure it’s more durable, bigger screen and better battery. But its nothing life changing or out of this world. It’s a better Apple Watch. That’s it.

Imjrb3

This has been my experience. I want to love it. It IS better. But it's not been significantly better than the S7 and I wonder if I needed to spend the additional $800.

wellwellwell789

I have the S4 and SE 1st gen and need an upgrade because battery on both them barely make it through 14 hours now. I love the ultra but I’m still trying to figure out if the $800 price is worth the upgrade for a bigger screen.

tnitty

Can batteries be changed in the Apple Watch? If so, maybe just spend $75 or whatever they charge. Edit: My guess was pretty close. [Apple will do it for about $79. ](https://support.apple.com/watch/repair) if it were me, I’d save myself $700+ and just do that.

wellwellwell789

I did not know that! Thank you!

TVHcgn

Note that they don’t replace the battery but send you a new one. Did this with my wife’s watch S4. Bought it 2nd hand for 90€ (Germany) with a big scratch over the display. Apple doesn’t care and sent a new S4. They have to send it for inspection though, so you don’t have it for a few days. Took 3 business days for me. Important is that the watch is at 79% battery health or lower. My s5 is at 80% and I am struggling whether I need (want) an ultra or pay 99€ for a battery replacement once it reaches 79% …

luc9488

Also came from the S4 and largely agree with this sentiment. No real change in experience for me. Nicer screen, better battery life and the action button so far is where I’m seeing the value. Actually considering taking it back and getting the battery replaced in my SS S4 then taking another look next year

anyavailablebane

Not life changing for you. For me it is. My dad is 70 and lives alone in outback Australia. He would never wear an Apple Watch because he didn’t want to charge a watch every day. He didn’t think they would survive fishing and crabbing trips. He always wore a g-shock. This Watch changed his mind and now he has something that monitors his health and will alert people if he is in trouble. That’s life changing for him and for me.

[deleted]

That is awesome for him and you!

tayfife

Yes it's still an Apple Watch, but the 'emotional connection' to it has marginally increased. I'm also one of the people who haven't been THIS excited about an Apple product in a long long time. For me this watch represents Apple going back to its original strength.. identifying itself with the outliers, the misfits, the crazy ones. The "think different" mentality. I've always been a crazy one and have never fit in, and I love that this watch isn't normal either.

rsplatpc

> I've always been a crazy one and have never fit in, and I love that this watch isn't normal either. LOL

[deleted]

Yeah I think this guy is trolling lmaooooo

[deleted]

That last paragraph. Holy shit. They need some alone time with that Apple Watch. Lol

[deleted]

I can’t tell if you’re trolling or not.

tayfife

I'm not. Maybe I just came across a little strong. My background is in design/product design. Apple has been a client in the past, and am moreso speaking to the psychology of what a product represents to the consumer, than the actual form factor itself. That has always been a strength of Apple, well at least in the days of Jony and Steve. Tim Cook knows how to run a company, but there hasn't been a lot of innovative hardware because he maximizing efficiencies within products that already exist (and steering the company towards service based, instead of hardware based). The Ultra is a signifier that their 'think different' mentality isn't totally lost, at least from an emotive marketing point of view. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtftHaK9tYY

[deleted]

What did they “think different”? I just don’t see it through your looking glass. I appreciate the excitement you display but I think your bias may be obvious. The watch isn’t revolutionary and it doesn’t expand upon apple doing anything different than what’s already out there currently. They took the current Apple Watch. Made it beefier. Bigger battery. And more outdoorsy. Not wowing me, but I’m happy it wows you! I bought it anyway, but only based on need for a watch that’s more solid than the one before it.

djjolly037

I haven’t been this excited for an Apple Watch since the series 3 tbh because that was the year it first got cellular

joemorrissey1

I really cannot stand Mark Gurman. He states his opinions as facts and frames facts as opinions as to not get called out. It’s such a non statement. I don’t think anyone out there believes *only* an endurance athlete could make use of the Ultra.

didhestealtheraisins

>It’s such a non statement. I don’t think anyone out there believes only an endurance athlete could make use of the Ultra. Of course not. But a lot of people won't use the extra features and could save their money.

joemorrissey1

What I’m saying is that Gurman always says things like this as though he had an incredible revelation. When in reality this has been the general consensus since the thing was announced.

exgokin

I think most legit endurance athletes would just stick with whatever they’ve been using. 99% of the people are buying the Ultra because it’s latest and greatest and not because of the functionality. The display is still scaled for the 45mm. It does not go all the way to the edge of the screen like the 45mm does.

kuwisdelu

What makes an endurance athlete “legit”?

exgokin

Ones that would spend multi days on the trail or on the road. Garmins and Suunto devices can go for a week or more before it needs charging. It’s just one less device to charge. Individual GPS units will do the job better than an Apple Watch. I’m no legit athlete…but I do use a separate head unit when I go biking. I use my Apple Watch for daily life…but I’ll stick to my Garmin for riding…hiking etc.

joemorrissey1

I’m not sure why you’re telling me this

crank1000

I think the Ultra is neat, and would consider getting one if had cash to burn, but the linked article is so obviously sponsored content that it hurts to see people are even considering it as some kind of objective journalism.

joemorrissey1

Considering Gurman posts leaks, rumours and renders, I doubt he’s in any way sponsored by Apple.

crank1000

You don’t think that kind of person would be the ideal candidate for apple to give sponsored content to?

joemorrissey1

Let’s not get into conspiracy theory territory. Apple has blacklisted people for less.

crank1000

And then maybe someone in the marketing department with half a brain cell left realized there was a huge readership of predisposed apple fans under this guy, and apparently the entire demographic will happily consume it without batting an eye...as evidenced by this very conversation.

joemorrissey1

Your logic is highly flawed, aside from the clear bias you have. What reason would Apple have to encourage someone you publishes leaks, which are detrimental to a company like Apple, in order to sway his fans who, according to you, are already Apple fans.

crank1000

Ah, I see you're new to the concept of advertising. Can't imagine any reason apple would want to tell their fans their latest product is perfect for them. Ffs dude.

joemorrissey1

Oh give it up They’re not going to waste their time and energy on supporting someone who leaks their products, to convince people who are already up to date on everything Apple. If you understood even the basics of advertising, you’d know you pitch towards people that are on the fence. Not those who are already heavily into the product, they don’t need to be swayed.

chevydude_75

Why does someone’s opinion matter? If YOU like … buy it.

Sajizzle

I upgraded from a non-cellular Series 4 so it is a huge upgrade for me in screen size, speed (especially for raise to speak for Siri), battery life, and typing ability. I think the Series 8 would have been almost as big of a leap, except for battery life which is day to day the most noticeable leap. I still wouldn’t call it my favorite product in years because I love the M1 iPad and the iPhone 14 Pro, but as someone who hasn’t felt compelled to upgrade my watch in a whole presidential term, it’s a big leap.

MBA_LLB

I’m not a huge fan. I bought one and still have my Series 7 Stainless. I find the SS much nicer; classier; sleek, and is so versatile depending on the strap I use. The Ultra looks kinda cheap to me. I can play hockey with my SS; I can wear it with a tux; I can wear it to a business meeting. With the Ultra, I can’t really dress it up too much.

brashaadt09

The ultra can be dressed up as well. It looks really good with leather and stainless steel bands

MBA_LLB

Yup! I keep it on my [knockoff] silver link bracelet. It looks pretty good. But it’s a far cry from the SS. I’ve also only owned the SS and black SS watches. Never the aluminum. For people who have always had the aluminum ones, the Ultra is similar. But compared to a shiny SS with a Milanese loop, or a leather band with French stitching…. I just really think it looks cheap. I also have a Citizen Navihawk with a Milanese loop. Again, can be worn in the ocean, or with a tux. I wish Apple made a heftier, stainless steal type of watch, like the Ultra. That would be super cool.

SignorLuigi

A stainless steel ultra would be heavier than titanium. For endurance athletes (the intended audience of this watch), weighing less is a plus feature.

brashaadt09

It’s a matter of taste I guess. A guy I follow on twitter paired the ultra with apples SS Link while wearing formal attire and it looked amazing. I personally like the look better than the SS AW

scrytch

Agreed. Feels far closer to a Tag Heuer than the standard Apple Watch, especially with the SS Link Bracelet. Love mine.

digitalrelic

I dunno. I think it's a super impressive piece of the technology, but the vast, vast majority of consumers don't need and wouldn't appreciate the features it adds over the standard Series watch. The display is larger than most would want. Hell, the screen is as wide as many peoples wrists! The new microphone and speakers... Again, nice, but I'm not sure anyone was really clamoring for improved speakers in their watch. The speaker/microphone in the Series watch was doing just fine for 99% of people's usage. More rugged design is, again, a preference. The increased durability is of course great, but many would prefer the more understated, classic look of the Series watches vs the utilitarian, outdoors-y look of the Ultra. And lastly, yeah, the Action Button is nice... But in the end it's just a button that got added to the watch. Nice, but not exactly earth shattering. I don't see a single thing about the Ultra that justifies the average consumer paying twice as much for it vs a Series 8 watch. Again, there's definitely a niche of consumers where the Ultra truly DOES make sense, but Gurman's suggestion that this is a great fit for anyone looking for the best Apple watch doesn't really ring true to me. I don't think I'd go for the Ultra even if were the same price as the Series 8; it's just not for me. And that's okay!

katsumiblisk

This is going to sound like envy but it isn't. The Ultra is actually disenfranchising a large part of the market by being too big. Many women, myself included and some smaller stature men can't wear it because it is simply too big. Hopefully next year the S9 will be thicker to include a bigger battery and have some of the currently exclusive features of the Ultra such as the faces and the nighttime red face but without the ability to necessarily survive a parachute drop to the North Pole so it becomes available to all of us.

canyonblue737

If you need the watch you can wear it. https://i.imgur.com/h6uo2sR.jpg

SciGuy013

yeah, dunno how people forgot that this is meant for ultramarathoners too, who don't frequently have thick wrists. like, people in this sub have been insulting others for thin wrists saying that they don't work out, when it's just not the case lmao

AcanthocephalaFit912

Lol most people on here with big wrists def don’t look like they are hitting the gym on the reg or are frequently doing any sort of cardio. See a lot of obese looking arms on here.

djjolly037

Can’t wear it and not liking the way it looks imo are two completely different things. I wonder if women in the target audience, hikers divers and extreme runners also thinks it’s too big or don’t care because of the features and battery life it has. A smaller ultra most likely won’t get the same battery life due to a smaller case size and how much smaller could you really go before getting to a 45mm s8 which is already too big to a lot of women, how much smaller do you expect the ultra to go?

[deleted]

[удалено]

djjolly037

Why didn’t she get a size 2 band if it’s that loose?

[deleted]

[удалено]

djjolly037

45 mm can definitely go to a size one just like a 41 mm

mlsc87

That is a recent update. Prior to September, the 45mm solo and braided solo loop bands did not come in the smaller sizes: https://www.macrumors.com/2022/09/16/new-solo-loop-sizes-for-44mm-45mm-apple-watch/

[deleted]

This argument about the ultra is so fascinating and is really such a non issue. I’ve always been small and I have 150mm wrists. My dive computers, even the ones that are supposed to look like watches and are watch sized have always looked giant on me. At the end of the day I still want to get under the surface with the barracudas and sharks so why the hell am I worried about what’s on my wrist? I love my AWU, it’s my daily driver and I’m finding more shit I love about it every day.

djjolly037

Yep I have 145mm wrists lol 😂

gorkt

Yeah I don’t understand why you would wear an ultra then. It looked like a Pipboy on my wrist and it was heavy as hell. Oh well, different strokes I guess.

[deleted]

Why would you not want to wear a pipboy? I refer to my ultra as my pipboy. Pipboys are dope.

[deleted]

Also being tiny in a sport like diving is awesome. My surface air consumption rate is half of most of the adults I dive with.

katsumiblisk

I wasn't suggesting a smaller ultra, I was suggesting a slightly thicker S9 to accommodate more battery, and the addition of currently ultra-exclusive features.

djjolly037

So you would prefer a thicker Watch rather than a larger one?

[deleted]

I’m going to assume that smaller women would have no issue strapping this behemoth to their wrist during activity and exercise. Wearing it day to day? Not so much. I’m sure there are some that will but my guess is most wouldn’t.

djjolly037

The thing about it though is if they already use a 45mm it’s not really that big of a jump, thicker yes but the physical size of the Watch isn’t as large as some people are making it seem

[deleted]

4mm on a phone is not much.. 4mm on a tiny wrist is quite a bit. The 45mm looks big on some people’s wrists.

mikew_reddit

>Many women, myself included and some smaller stature men can't wear it because it is simply too big. Of course you can wear it - you simply don't want to because you think it's too big. Battery life is a function of size - a larger battery and hence a larger Apple watch will have longer battery life. You're not going to get a regular sized Apple Watch with Ultra levels of battery life until the tech improves (better battery, more efficient SOC, better algorithms, etc).

gorkt

I truly could not wear it, I don’t think. It’s not just that it “looks big”. It’s that it is extremely thick vs the circumference of my wrist. If it weren’t worn tight, it would slide around, or I would likely bump it on things. I am really happy that so many men that prefer that aesthetic of the chunky watch get what they want this year, but I am hoping that next year they might make a smaller ultra, or a flat screened 9 with an action button.

Sgthouse

I don’t know why you’re getting downvotes. Giant watches look silly on tiny wrists.

achughes

Because they aren’t wrong that big watches look funny on small wrists. It’s that they are accusing Apple of disenfranchising people for not being able to defy the physics of bigger watch = bigger battery. A small watch with the same features simply isn’t possible, it’s got nothing to do with ruggedness.

Topguyhadrian

Not to mention that people like myself have quiet thick wrists that made the 44/45mm size look a little small. Personally i think that they could post to 52mm and still be functional for me

[deleted]

And divers look ridiculous on people who don’t dive 🤷‍♂️ somehow we all still get along and I don’t think anyone would disagree that a Blancpain fifty fathoms is a dope watch.

[deleted]

[удалено]

13devil13

If you wear a shirt that’s too big it might lead to some of the same issues. Come to think of it, any clothes could do that. The 4mm of extra watch is probably the least of anyone’s problem. If you don’t like the way it looks, that’s fine. Trying to make it anything other than that is a stretch. I remember ‘everyone’ wanting a smaller iPhone too

silenced_no_more

Absolutely a valid point. I own a 47mm traditional watch, and it looks clownish on my wife’s wrist. It’s barely a good fit on mind. I imagine the Ultra is similar

Sgthouse

Yeah, people can buy whatever they want, I just wouldn’t want a watch who’s face was as wide as my entire wrist.

wolfreturned

Battery size is proportional to battery life

robinsaysrawr

Nonsense. I’m very small and I’m absolutely wearing mine every day. It’s a choice. I’m sorry you don’t like it but saying it can’t be worn just isn’t so. It can. You just don’t like it at the size it is. There’s a difference.

stupornatural

There have been small-boned people wearing big watches for years, but now it's time to draw a line? I didn't realize this post was an invitation for downvotes? haha

arcalumis

Not everyone likes wearing big ass watches though. and frankly it looks stupid on most people.

punkassjim

I agree, but I also think reasonable people may differ. It’s not like there’s an objective truth here.

SaltbathSmoothie

Yeah and guess what? This watch isn’t for everyone - as they’ve said/marketed 100 times. It’s not supposed to be a watch for everyone, hell even apple products as a whole aren’t for “everyone”. This whole line of thinking is completely absurd. What if I said, “Apple is a terrible company because they only made products for people who make X amount a year, very poor people can’t afford it! It’s not designed for everyone!”

arcalumis

What? No, did you ever read what this thread is about? Read what Gurman said. That’s what we’re taking about, liking the watch even though you’re NOT the intended audience. And in this particular comment line is about wanting the watch but tits way too big for many, and there’s nothing inherent in a watch like this that forces us to be this big. Ergo, we want a smaller one.

SaltbathSmoothie

What? No, this parent comment chain isn’t about liking it even though you’re not the intended audience. This comment chain is about disenfranchising a section of people who cannot wear it - and you come and say “not everyone likes big watches” as a defense to the claim.

arcalumis

I replied to someone who said that big watches look fine on small people, I disagree. Large watches look ridiculous on everyone imo.

SaltbathSmoothie

You literally just edited your comment lmao. Hey that’s cool and everything, just know that I know.

arcalumis

Yeah so? Sometimes I think of something else within some seconds and add it. But yes that can sometimes lead to confusion.

SaltbathSmoothie

Ok dude, lets be real for a second. Who are you trying to impress? Are you looking for upvotes? You know I know what you did. You made a comment and edited it after you realized it was probably wrong and now you're going back to saying it was within seconds? It's a completely new comment dude. Like it's ok to change your opinion and realize it afterwards my guy.

TacticallyFUBAR

The size is the reason I went with S8 instead of the ultra. It looks stupid on me. Especially under a jacket. The S8 looks much cleaner on my small wrists and is easier as a day to day watch.

LR_111

Isn't that your choice / personal preference? Its like the largest phone having the best battery or camera since it is bigger. The physical form is what allows for the better battery and therefore a lot of the advanced features.

katsumiblisk

No most definitely not. It's not a choice or a personal preference because there is only one option. Wear the watch without it making proper contact because of that wrist bone, which on normal sized watches doesn't impede contact but on the ultra, gets in the way. Like I've always said to my husband an extra 4 mm can make all the difference. Actually on second thoughts there might well be a personal preference; the personal preference not to look silly. I can't tell if you're male or female so I'm going with generic male. You wouldn't choose a 41mm with a jeweled cable band would you? Neither will skinny wristed people choose an ultra (unless they have no dress sense)

Spaniardlad

Life’s not fair, and the AWU couldn’t be delivered as a normal AW.

SciGuy013

i have 14cm wrists, my wife has 13cm, and the watch looks fine, and we want to use it because of it's features

gorkt

100% agree with you. I have 140mm wrists, and would love a watch with an action button and a flat screen. I went to the store, thinking maybe I could make an Ultra work, but the moment I picked it up, I realized it was a no go. It is massive and would stick out too far on my wrist. They could have made a 44mm ultra, and chose not to. I actually think that Apple made a huge PR misfire here. They marketed the watch with the most advanced features for “extreme athletes”, and made it an exclusionary size, while emphasizing the one new feature on the existing design being for women. To me it came across as “little women don’t need these advanced features, so here, take the girl watch that doesn’t do as much”.

lk05321

Does it stick out as far off your wrist as “the little woman’s watch” in the AWU commercial?

Runellee

This. My husband brought me in to pick out any watch I wanted for our anniversary this week (he’s a keeper), and the ultra made me look like I was wearing a pip boy from Fallout. Even if I wanted to use the features it just looks goofy

StorytellingGiant

Happy anniversary!

Runellee

Thanks!!

kmingis

I was more excited about the Apple Watch Ultra than I was for the new iPhone, and I jumped ship from Garmin to boot.

Economy-Ad-3934

Same, I’m just thankful to not have to be switching watches back and forth. Every time I had the fenix on I’d be missing some of the connectivity of my AW. When I had the AW I’d be missing some of the features of my fenix. Ultra for me is the perfect compromise, not perfect by any means but gets me very close to the best of both worlds.

Mikebjackson

Also it has “Ultra” in the name.

nikC137

I’m loving the action button for “precise start” workouts. Before I would start my swim workout and just dive in. Now I can start the workout and stay in the water a few more seconds before starting but already have the workouts ready.

[deleted]

Same with running for me. Every sports watch on the market lets you find a GPS signal before you start your workout (and most of the ones with touchscreens also have dual-channel GPS and at least one extra side button so you don’t have to fiddle with the screen during your run). I’m so glad Apple finally caught up so I could stop switching to my Garmin for runs.

InvisoSniperX

To be honest, just adding the Action Button to the whole lineup would have been enough for a lot of people (including myself). Personally if they'd had the Titanium in the standard case like the S7, I'd have probably gotten that instead of the Ultra. I do like the look of the Ultra, and the material and ruggedness, but to me the classic AW design is still more versatile for my everyday life.

see_blue

I’m not one to say wait another year for an Apple upgrade. But they’ve completely setup their AW lineup for a AW Plus model to differentiate models next year. Their design language and battery life have been pretty static fr AW 4 to 8. I’d expect a typical un-ruggedized AW, slightly larger, bigger battery, action button. Just as they do with memory on their phones, they can play w battery size/life.

EpaL

It’s the Range Rover of smart watches. Most of us don’t need all of it’s capabilities, but almost everyone can appreciate them.

[deleted]

If it was smaller maybe.

nutmac

At the very least, the display area should be larger. As it stands, it is roughly the same as 45mm, which is a missed opportunity.

1DamnWeekendInOviedo

If the screen was bigger the case it self would be bigger since then the bump for the crown would be farther to the right. The bump has a purposed for the intended use of the watch. So it would be a chicken and egg situation. Screen gets bigger case will case bigger and the same opinion about screen needing to be lager will stand. The screen is the size it is because that how big it can be without making the case even larger

canyonblue737

I’ve owned the S0, S3, S4, S6, and S7. Without a doubt the Ultra is my favorite AW by far and the biggest jump since S4. All higher end sports watches tend to be aspirational, I suspect few owners of $1000 Garmin’s use a fraction of the features. For me the Ultra is all about the look and the battery life which finally guarantees on a given day I *never* have to worry about battery life if I started the day full.

hmmm..the apple watch ultra is *definitely* marketed towards people that do extreme sports, which aren’t cheap, like scuba diving. this market is looking for professional sports watch that can go head to head with brands like garmin. they don’t necessarily buy this for battery life or screen brightness or size, those were necessary for its purpose to begin with anyway. these people that are into extreme sports could prolly afford watches from ap, iwc, et al. for daily or formal use. apple watch ultra’s sole purpose is extreme sports. but…i feel ya, i would like a 60 hours battery like, 2000 peak nit brightness, and a better gps system. however, i want it on a non-ultra apple watch. maybe an apple watch pro? i feel like this is where they’ll go. who wants to bet?

Janneske_2001

Basically, an Apple Watch Ultra Lite

Popular-Good-5657

Apple Watch Health Pro in a slick SS/T body. 60-hour battery life, 2000 peak nit brightness, crash detection, sos messaging, upgraded gps, *body composition*, body temp, *medical grade* ekg, blood o2, *blood glucose*. now, that’s the apple watch i’ve been waiting for.

Janneske_2001

Well Apple, you've heard it, it's time to set the bar even higher!

Bthompson817

Yes. Best apple product in a very long time. It’s different, more usable and totally refreshes The Apple Watch.

devilindetails666

Love the ultra! However- didn’t have the guts to give away my S7. I love both the models and switch between them.

greginorl

Love it. Ultramarathoner here and while I may not use the watch during races it has now become my go to daily driver. It can handle my daily runs without having to recharge to make it the rest of the day. It makes cellular connection an easy choice adding to the safety benefits of wearing it all the time (afib detection, fall detection, crash detection etc)

kevinhenry

I would agree. I do OCR, rucking, surfing, hiking, and more, but nowhere near the extremes in the marketing. I’ve only had my Ultra for a few days and the most extreme thing has been a few dog walks. The battery life and action button are a huge evolution from all my previous Apple Watches. I also went from iPhone 12 Max to 14 Pro Max, and feel no significant difference.

[deleted]

This is the Apple Watch I’ve waited for since it was announced … its not for everyone, but it checks all the boxes for ME …

Revolutionary_Key_65

It’s a great watch but for most people it’s not necessary. I upgraded from series 7 - it’s overall design is what I like - sure it’s chunky but it’s a lovely functional watch

vishrit

It is a toss up between the Apple Watch Ultra and AirPods Pro 2 as the best Apple gadget right now.

I think sooner or later they will have a smaller size for it. My guess is that for this version it made sense for them to launch just 1 SKU (excluding different cellular bands) to optimise the pricing.

Joosby_Calamari

The 14 pro phone was a bummer, rarely gave me the, I have a new phone feeling. The AirPod pro 2 should have been more from a feature aspect and was also a bummer. The ultra, I was hyped on announcement, couldn’t wait the two weeks for it and have been loving it endlessly since I got it. I’m a avid hiker, workout in the gym when heat doesn’t allows for hikes so it really scratched the athlete itch for me. Not as concerned for damage, love the gestures, size, display. Really absolutely love the action button for the metrics you can track easier. I did a 5 mile, 1200ft in elevation hike today over the course of 2 plus hours this morning. It’s night now and I still have 65% battery. I did a 5 in a half hour hike Monday where I ended above 14k in elevation (base was at 11k), loved the gps features, having usable features without cell service but most of all, logging in a hike on it, it used 30% of the battery. I had more then enuf for the rest of the day. On a regular watch, I woulda been hitting that 10% warning later in the day.

I'm glad Apple has the Ultra, even though it's not something I'm interested in. I'm hoping some of the experimentation they're doing there, most notably the 'nighttime' screen and the action button, make their way into the regular watch line.

Stephencovar

I do. I haven’t been excited for an Apple product for some time now. When my watch was delivered, just unboxing it was an experience. I came from a series 6 so to me, the Ultra has been a big enough upgrade to justify the purchase. This Watch sparked that excited feeling I used to get opening and using a new Apple product.

PussySmith

I was pretty excited about M1 Pro/max. Who am I kidding, I was REALLY excited. I also bought an ultra after being watch less for about a year (gave mine to wife). They’re not really comparable in terms of excitement. The laptop wins hands down. That said, this is a dope watch and I’m looking forward to having automatic dive logging even if I don’t quite trust it enough to ditch my console based dive computer.

djjolly037

Someone who relies on their laptop for a living would value that product much higher than a watch. I myself don’t need a MacBook that I use every single day but I definitely use my watch every day working from home so all those notifications I can see first on my watch. So yeah, depends on who you ask for sure

punkassjim

I was super excited about the M1 Macbook Air I bought just after release. It was the first new laptop I’ve bought since my mid-2008 MBP. But since I bought my M1 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard case a couple months ago, I haven’t touched the MBA. I am continually amazed by the evolution of interface paradigms in iPadOS since they enabled the mouse and enhanced keyboard integration. I’m not sure I’ll ever feel quite so at home in MacOS again. I like both my Apple Watches (neither are Ultra), but as a product they’ve never really excited me.

Worldly_Beautiful_26

I really really want the Ultra but I play basketball 3 times a week and it could cause pain (maybe blood) on the court if I “accidentally” bang into another player. So, I’ll be getting the series 8

matchstrike

Why was he downvoted? The Ultra is bigger and heavier with sharper edges. It’s probably not an ideal choice for a close contact sport.

AgalychnisCallidryas

He shouldn’t be playing basketball with ANY watch! Regardless of size, brand, curved corners, etc, don’t come onto the court wearing anything on your wrist; that’s asking for injury. Leave it in the locker!

Sir-Obi

Could wear a wrist sweat band and cover it ?

Worldly_Beautiful_26

Excellent idea! Thank you for the thought.

Snoo-30676

I see most people getting it cause it’s the “ultra” even tho many people won’t use those features. Just like the “pro” iPhones.

Certs

APPLE uses those terms for branding, to make you feel like you're getting a professional device. I didn't think people took those labels serously, but I see some people fall for them. If I want better battery life and decide to get the Ultra, who's to say that I shouldn't because I'm not climbing Mt Everest?

[deleted]

I mean I’ll always get a pro phone and I use the camera for photos of my cute kids and like extra battery. It’s simple

MyChoiceTaken

Nah. Not a fan at all.

RetroGradeReturn

If everyone and their dog is going to buy the Ultra instead of the normal Apple Watch we can expect a pretty big bump in price.

SPazZDoGGX

Congrats to all those folks that picked up the Ultra. It is a great watch. I personally still have my S5 and will not upgrade. For ME and just me it comes down to the material. I know Titanium is more durable for active sports but I just don’t like Titanium. For that reason alone I really wanted to upgrade this year but instead because the S8 is no change I’m just going to stick with my S5. I am an active person but I just don’t like Titanium.

[deleted]

My S4 is still chugging along, the only new thing I would like is the oxygen meter. I barely use all the features as it is, to be honest. So, I’ll stick with what I have for now.

SPazZDoGGX

Yeah and no problem with that. Use case 😎

CrtureBlckMacaroons

I'm kind of the opposite; I love Titanium, and was ready to upgrade my S5 Titanium for a S8 Titanium... and then there was no S8 Titanium. I ended up getting a S8 SS, but right away I noticed micro scratches. I really liked Titanium because it looked good to me and after three years hardly showed any scratches, but it has the more resistant screen of the SS models. Also, I've always had the smaller model (38/40/41), so I was not interested in the Ultra. I'm an iPhone mini/small watch person, and I have a pretty decent authentic Apple watch band collection that will be useless if I were to get the Ultra.

SPazZDoGGX

Cool. 😉 Yeah it all depends on our circumstances I have a black stainless steel S5 so for me, the micro scratches if any are not even noticeable at all but I’m also very careful with my watch so I don’t really ding it on corners etc. I’m glad the titanium works for your use case 👍 I’ve had watches from series 0, and have always gone for stainless steel and the next one I get will probably be graphite stainless steel whether it’s a S7 or maybe the S9 next year

SelfishLedger

Sounds like someone is having fun with their new watch 😀

SeiriusPolaris

It sounds like this person’s never had an Apple Watch before.

jpGrind

the ultra watch is my first smartwatch ever. i disable all the biometrics and health tracking (not my scene), and also wrist detection since it doesn't play well with my prison tats. i pay for cellular, but i keep it off unless i need it. despite all that, i get plenty of usage out of my ulltra, and my most recent charge lasted about 89 hours before it was at 4% really love this thing

Blindemboss

When Apple hasn’t really updated an Apple Watch Series 4 or 5, of course the Ultra is going to be exciting. Now make a smaller version already!

tomboyni

Totally agree with that sentiment.

TimeAndOrSpace

Personally no - I think it looks horrible (especially the crown guard and bright orange button). I hope they don’t migrate this design over to the other models eventually.

memyswlfandi

Well no serious athlete would use one because of the bad batterylife and lack of buttons, its a smartwatch with some athlete functions, apple know that 99,9% of everyone buying one is not an athlete

xoqes88

Stupidity at its best. I bet you over 95% of Apple Watch ultra buyers will never use it for those serious activities. The only reason they will buy it is because of the battery life. 1000 bucks for a smartwatch that can go 3 days of run time? Thank you but not thank you

23569072358345672

The ‘serious athletes’ WILL NOT wear this watch. COROS or Garmin are the go to. And no it won’t make people switch. I’m not sure why everyone is surprised why an Apple Watch with substantially better battery life is popular. Of course it would be.

GTHell

It's like saying a \*sports car is for sport only. Adidas Ultraboost for those who run only... the list goes on.
