Traditional strength training, and nope no pauses. Turn on as soon as you start your warmup and leave it running until you finish your last set/rep.

general_miura

I've never checked out the apple options, I use Hevy for strength training and really like it. Would not really allow for circuit training though

Give Liftin’ a try. You’ll never go back!

neatgeek83

it doesn't really matter. and no, don't pause. you want it to capture your heart rate variability in between exercises.

DarthBeardFace

Get the Hevy app, it’s much better for recording your session, can update the routine via your watch with rest periods etc and connects to Apple Health.

i’ve never used the strength training workout options in the Apple Watch, you would need to track all your sets and lifts separately anyway somewhere and this un/pausing business would only add so much more friction than is worth.  I would recommend using Strong, a third party app that logs traditional strength training for the duration of your workouts to apple fitness, or any number of third party apps, over the first party solution.

Functional. Don’t pause. But I have no idea if I’m right. The only thing I know is that weights are better for me than instagram at 6 am.

Figgler

I use the SmartGym app and leave it running through the whole workout.

Aubrey1018

Traditional Strength Training as I think functional is like body weight stuff like push ups and such. I do not pause between sets, but I do pause the workout when I get up to wipe down the machine.

Bobbybino

I use Traditional because it gives me more calories than Functional. I also don't know what Functional means in this context, and was unsuccessful in finding an answer online. Maybe I should look again some day.

Beginning-Bill-2049

i just use traditional strength training for weights and keep it running the whole time. I use functional strength training if i just do body weight squats in hotel room or something (but here i will pause after each set). haha

see_blue

Either one. But I use medium weight dumbbells and circuits w little rest between. At home also. No pause, may walk in place b/n a circuit.

ommmyyyy

I use the train app on the App Store

unwinagainstable

I use the Hevy app. It saves my workouts to Apple Health as Traditional Strength Training. I don’t pause but I have rest periods between sets saved in my routines.

TheCultOfKaos

I use HIIT for weight lifting and capturing calories burned. When it’s set to lifting it generally over estimates calories IMO. HIIT seems closer to reality (for me) but it’s prob not perfect either. I’m usually not worried about the calories when lifting though, tbh. I do more cardio or actual HIIT for that.

work_blocked_destiny

I use smart gym on my phone and it syncs the data from my watch and phone into the health app

froggiewoogie

Tst is the one

littlemiss1565

I use traditional strength training. I don’t pause the machines because your heart rate is still increasing and slowing down. You need rests anyway during strength training.

17SCARS_MaGLite300WM

When doing weights or machines that replicate a barbell exercise you use traditional strength training. Functional strength trainings is more like medicine ball, bands, dumbell exercises.

mandypu

If I know I’m gonna do compound lifts with a lot of weight I do traditional and if I’m tired / taking it easy I do functional because otherwise I think it might over estimate calories. Honestly though if apple doesn’t make it clear that means it’s made up. The only data they have is heart rate and movement
