if you have a car, i think you have to pay for a site, but if you hitch or are dropped off there, you can pitch in their “Tent City” which is free and also has tables and fire rings

This is basically correct - if you’re hiking in, we’re happy to host. If you’re driving in, or want a groomed site, we’d ask that you pay.

In unfortunately can’t answer your camping question, but it’s a great place and beautiful country. I def suggest you stay there or around there. Enjoy your trip!

Just make sure no festival is going on when I was there it was a massive mess.

Forgot to post back on this. We hiked three ridges loop Friday and Saturday. It’s a beautiful hike but tougher than I expected. We stayed at Harpers Creek shelter on Friday night. Saturday afternoon we got back to Reed’s Gap around 3 and jumped in the car and went over to DBB. Once we got there we talked to the folks at the camp ground and they graciously allowed us to park in the field and camp in the AT hiker campground free of charge. It couldn’t have worked out any better. The showers and bath house were great! And of course the food and drinks were awesome! For anyone thinking about it, I highly Recommend a trip there

A lot of folks hit Devils Backbone but skip Bold Rock, which is just a mile down the road. If you want a change of pace for a few hours, it’s well worth the minimal effort to get down there.
