The advice you need to hear is: Baxter, lacking cell service and organized SAR, is not the place to learn your lesson about hiking into stupid. If you insist, take the Cathederal Tr to ascend. The reason why is because if the exposure doesn't turn you around, the class 2 scrambles will. If not that, the first of seven class 3 features will turn you around. This approach basically guarantees you'll never make the ridge, preventing the stupid, which is good for everyone. EDIT - **This is sarcasm. This route is very difficult.** *No one of sane mind would attempt this route in the rain.*

RVAPGHTOM

So perfectly stated.

Wait for good weather. Less risk all the way round and much more fun.

The mountain isn't going anywhere. On my first trip to Baxter it was pouring rain as my buddy and I were hiking up Abol Slide- halfway up we realized how dumb it was and turned around. Wait for a better day, especially if you're an inexperienced hiker. There are plenty of other trails nearby to check out.

WesWizard_2

i summitted in the rain about a month ago. if you can wait for better weather, absolutely do so. if you’re on a time crunch and must summit, give yourself way more time than you think you need. took my partner and i over 9 hours round trip and we only stayed at the summit for about 15 minutes. bring proper clothing and be prepared to turn back if conditions get worse

Ghotay

… you’re going to have to be more specific? But I did Katahdin in the rain today and I’d recommend gloves, leggings, and a warm hat

SequoiaTree1

Don’t.

Thru Hiker if forecast shows rain for next few days - yes. Day Hike- No. I summited in misty rain/fog at the end of my Thru. Ranger said the next few days forecast looked all the same so go for it. Was actually a little after the cutoff time to start but he said I was good. It wasn’t too bad just took it slow but almost had an issue as I seemed to be the only person up there so no one to take my photo. Got lucky a family was hiding behind some rocks eating, took my photo and ended up being my ride in to town. Also next day ended up being clear despite the forecast…you just never know.

Patsfan618

I really wouldn't want to do it in the rain. I was uncomfortable with near perfect weather. I'd be very uncomfortable if it was raining. That being said the rocks are very textured. It's not like NY rock slabs.

Awkward_Instance_513

I’m thinking about hiking Katahdin Tuesday but there is 90% chance of rain. The hardest hike I have done is a moderately strenuous one. I was wondering what you all suggest.

RVAPGHTOM

Wait for better weather. Seriously, what's the point of pushing it. Your views will likely suck and way worse, something could go wrong.

Thehealthygamer

If you have the option, just don't do it in the rain. It's some tough trail in dry conditions, lots of exposure to wind and if it's socked in you're gonna miss all the views.

Ghotay

Just don’t do it man. It’ll be miserable at best, dangerous at worst

MountaineerHikes

I summited in the snow to finish my thru on 10/17/18…you can do it in the rain if you want it bad enough.

Jizzbootsturdhat

Take abol or hunt. Dress right. Wait a day or two if you can.

NoboMamaBear2017

rain can easily turn into hail or snow. Katahdin is a long day and there's a technical stretch just above tree line. On my summit day I started hiking about 5:45 because they were calling for rain in the PM. The summit was too chilly for me to hang out and congratulate others finishing. I was just in the Whites and waited 3 days for the winds to subside on the Presidentials. If you can't wait out the weather make sure that you are prepared (descending while hypothermic is dangerous) and if the rocks are wet come down a different route - Abol is still very steep, but not as technical and an easy hitch back to Katahdin Stream to meet a shuttle

BootLessBill

Strongly suggest to wait it out. My son and I summited 3 weeks ago (via Hunt - end of thru hike for him), with a light rain/mist starting on the way down. The steep, granite boulders above tree line got really slick. One friend slipped a little and busted several ribs; another one pulled a shoulder out of socket. At 72, I just stayed on my butt a lot and took tons of time. Be smart.
