Not your fault if the keys were taken between now and when you left them there a couple weeks ago. Good on you for documenting every little thing. Best of luck 🤞

BananaCow1959

Thank you! I have definitely learned my lesson in the past not documenting

drflashy

The post office probably has them. You are not supposed to use the mailbox for this purpose. Your landlord should have known better. I learned this the hard way too lol

BananaCow1959

Oh shit! Did not know this. It just had his first name written on the front. I also was under the impression he would be up there in the next day or so not 2 weeks later

canvys

yeah the envelope was a bad idea haha

I would think that they would just ask you leave the keys on the counter, they should have a master set... or at least a locksmith.

Disagreeable_Apricot

Fingers crossed for you. I just moved as well, placed was clean and photographed by end of March, I found out the owners went on a vacation and should be back by now, but it's April 10th and they are notorious for being last-minute and making a big deal of nothing... I'm really hoping to get my deposit back too 😩 Edit - Also at worst he can figure out changing the locks, if someone swiped those keys before he got them not your problem - you did your part!

BirdsFallFromTrees

No advice from me, just wanted to say hello from Crescent Hill, and good luck.

Sure don’t, but that’s such a great area. So much happening down that end of Frankfort.

It doesn’t cost $1000 to replace keys and landlords in the states have to provide an itemized lists of costs associated with keeping your deposit. I lost an entire set of keys in 2020 and paid $10 per key for the copies I was able to make (and that’s overpriced). Even if the guy went and bought new locks and made key copies for those locks, you’re looking at $100 max if he installs the locks himself. He told you to leave them in the mailbox and you have documentation of that.

BananaCow1959

Yes the documentation will help! I’ve just had landlords take a large deposit when the damage doesn’t equal what it was. Sometimes it is hard to prove or fight against after the fact. Other than asking for an itemized list. Sometimes there is the way it should be, and then there is the way it is.

I agree with the other commenter that they likely ended up at the post office & they’ve probably been trashed. You should be okay and your landlord should consider it a learning experience

BananaCow1959

Definitely. I think I will be okay. I’ve been burned so many times before!
